Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Philbin, 50, could turn the Dolphins into Green Bay South, which certainly isn’t a bad thing given the Packers’ success over the past five years, particularly on offense. Philbin could potentially recruit quarterbacks guru Tom Clements to Miami to be offensive coordinator and sign Packers backup Matt Flynn, who is a free agent and reportedly won’t be Franchise Tagged, to run the offense.

The only thing I wouldnt want...

and you probably couldnt stop it…is these coaches constantly pulling staff and players from their former team. I understand why they do it….but after having to deal with having leftovers from the cowgirls….I’m kind of soured on that.

Totally understand
after having to deal with having leftovers from the cowgirls….I’m kind of soured on that.

but it’s a little different when you take “leftovers” off a Super Bowl winning team that followed that up with a 15-1 season.

I like GB South in terms of coaches, but I am not sold on Flynn and personally would like to see us go after RGIII even if we get Philbin

imagine the posibilities an offensive mind like Philbin could create for RGIII

It’s the only thing that scares me about hiring Philibin, that he will want to bring Flynn with him.

Let Flynn compete with Moore...

Sure up the O-line, wr’s, and defense in draft. We will be good to go. No need to waste draft picks. I like rg3 as well, but if we can get. Qb without surrendering draft picks-i like that better. Look how good brady looks with 6 seconds to drop back every time.

Where is Oronde Gadsden when we need him?

Flynn makes me nervous (been there done that, got us no where)

If we can sign someone like Nicks our OL will be fine. An OL of Long, Nicks, Pouncey, Incognito and Murtha/Jerry would be more than fine (not many teams can boast 3 Pro-bowlers on one OL). We could also target someone like Andrew Datko in the 3rd round to add depth/competition.

I see a lot of people on here want Nicks....

…but is there any info on him even WANTING….or thinking about playing here?….

He's under contract until the new league year starts

He’s not going to say anything about any team other than NO. He’s a FA and will want a big pay day and NO just payed Evans the highest salary by a guard last year. Nicks will command a salary comparable to Evans and he will go where the money is. Not only would he be one of the highest paid but in a state with no income tax, why wouldn’t he come to Miami? Who knows maybe he even has a relationship with Reggie Bush and Reggie could help recruit him.

by Agent J 78 on Jan 18, 2012 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

I'm also not to high on Flynn

But he has a head start knowing the system that Philbin will bring. We need a seem treat TE. Look no further than Finley another Packer product. If we hire Philbin as HC my free agent pickups would be Flynn,Finley and Nails. The offense would be set. We could use the draft to fill the other holes on the team.

if you want to bring in a QB that you think will be competing with Moore, you are dooming us to another 3+ years of mediocraty...

This offseason should be about getting a Franchise QB, someone you bring in to be the guy, not to compete with Moore. As far as im concerned, we should get the Franchise QB (RGIII) and then fine o-line help in the middle rounds like good teams are able to do. There is no reason for us to have 4 1st round picks on the o-line next season. The Defense is already very good (just need FS help) and WR help could be had in FA where there are a number of very interesting options. All the pieces are in place, we are just missing the QB that can bring everything together

RG3 is not close to NFL ready.

Since when are projects sure things? Since when are they high-percentage successes?

Where the hell did anyone say RGIII was a sure thing?

LMAO, boy you dumb. (see, I can be a jerk too)

You never said Flynn, just like I never said RGIII was a sure thing (like you accused me of saying). All PNSter is saying is that neither QB is a sure thing. so quit being jerk and read his comment a few down where he states why he wants RGIII over Flynn…

I never said RGII was a sure thing, but...

the fact is that after 4 years in the league people are saying Flynn should be in competition for the starting job with us. Even the people that really like Flynn are saying he should be brought in to compete with Moore. Im sorry, but I dont want a QB who at best will only be a slight improvement over Moore and at worst might not even win the job. We have only seen Flynn play 2 games after giving him 4 years to learn in one of the best offensive systems in the league. We have no way to know if he is legit or just a product of the GB system. Personally, i think it is more likely that he is a product of the system. So, I rather finally go all in on a QB prospect. RGIII is far from a sure thing, but he is also far from a project (to me, project mans Pat White when we drafted him). RGIII is a very smart kid with very good arm strength, great accuracy, and phenomenal athleticism. Personally, I think he is worth the shot

The answer you're looking for is

Both of these guys (Flynn and RGIII) are gambles. But if I’m gambling, I’m putting all my money on the consensus 3rd best player in the draft over the 7th round back up.

Newton had pro-style experience and won a championship in that offense.

Then, Newton came back to the NCAA and proceeded to destroy the competition in his first year. Newton had no real concerns to anybody who read that excellent expose on him before the draft, which was rife with video evidence. Baylor is not a pro-style offense. RG3 doesn’t have the experience, hence he will take more time to develop in practice before he can be a legitimate signal caller in the NFL. UNLESS you get an offensive coordinator like Mike McCoy who is willing to try the spread in the NFL.

I see Ryan Tannehill

as a project, RG3 will be ready to start from day 1. I am sure he’ll have growing pains (every rookie does) but nothing that will have a huge negative effect on the season.

I did read the article leading up to the draft and I was hoping we had a chance to take him (Newton). I have the same feeling about RG3 than with Newton (actually I feel better about RG3 being the face of the Dolphins than even Newton). I don’t think he’ll break records like Newton in his rookie year but I think come January 2013 he’ll be right behind Andrew Luck for ORY.

I guess we’ll have an idea if QB may be targeted in the draft after FA in mid-March.

well what the Hell are they waiting for???

Get it done. He already said he is willing to relocate, and has shown a willingness to accept the job. Coach Philbin has a nice ring to it. And considered that after all that happened to him, his is looking forward to coaching again says what type of character he has. I love this move if it happened!!!!

Which is all BS since he is a glorified offensive line coach. McCarthy developed Rodgers and Flynn and is the playcaller

I dont know about you but I dont want another OL coach calling the shots.

I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?

Don Shula is not walking through that door. Jeff Fisher, is not walking through that door. Jon Gruden, and Bill Cowher are not walking through that door (in my best Rick Pitino voice)…lol. Look there are only three guys in the running. In an ideal world, they would hire Philbin, and promote Bowles to DC. Bring in Tom Clements as OC/QB coach, and then either go for Flynn via free agency, or trade up to get RG3. Either way I would be extremely happy. Let’s go baby-get it done!!!

It wouldn't surprise me if Philbin is hired

he also brings Winston Moss to be his DC.

Hopefully Ross hires him today, makes it official tomorrow and Philibin can then get the interviews done on Friday to have his staff set by the end of the weekend to be ready for Senior Bowl week next week.

I dont think Moss could leave GB to be a DC elsewhere because it is not considered a promotion

not sure though…

He is the ILB coach

It’s a promotion. Just like with Bowles, even though he was the “assistant Head Coach” he was the Secondary Coach so DC is a promotion.

It's just a title

Usually the Assistant Head Coach is a position coach. Just like Sparano was the Assistant Head Coach in Dallas but was the OL coach

That would be great, but I would offer Bowles DC spot, proven with our players already. Then coach Joe can call up Flynn and tell him how great Southbeach is Come on Down!

My point is he's not the type of sure thing that Cam Newton and Andrew Luck are.

My point is, don’t waste picks moving up in the draft for a project. My point is, stick with Matt Moore, bring in Flynn IDC, just don’t waste multiple picks on someone who is just as big a question mark when we have an O-Line to remedy before any new QB would be worth a damn anyway.

Cam Newton was anything but a sure thing

So you want to pay Matt Flynn 10 million a year based on one game? We have 3 solid pieces on the OL, bring in someone like Nicks, Grubbs or Scott and have Murtha & Jerry battle for RT spot.

Also, Matt Flynn is not going to excite the fan base to buy season tickets. RG3 will, whether you like him or not don’t be surprised to see the Dolphins trade up. If I were Ross I wouldn’t want to continue buying 10k+ tickets each game so that it isn’t blacked out. The Dolphins couldn’t even sell out JT’s last game against the Jets, how sad is that?
