Hearing the mystery interview on Saturday is Dave Toub for a second interview, which IMO makes him the front runner for the Miami HC job.

-Chris Kouffman

Not a big fan of this if true...

**UPDATE**
Stephen Ross has said he wants to interview coaches that are playing this weekend. Could mean Moss and Carmichael. Philbin has already been interviewed.

UGH

So we are going to lose Jeff Fisher for a Special Teams coordinator????

This would probably be my LAST option.

Hoping these rumors turn out to be untrue

I'm ALL- IN. Do whatever it takes to get Andrew Luck or RGIII to Miami in 2012.

I dunno....

Mike Tomlin wasnt really a huge name before he got the Steelers job, and now he is one of the most widely respected coaches in the league, by players and colleagues. So what the hell, if they think the guy has something special, go for it…..

The only reason I watch Jets games is to see if TODAY is the day Rex Ryan's fat heart gives out on him...

Yeah I agree

However, this seems politically VERY risky after the two previous hires with no coaching experience failed (Cameron & Sparano). Not sure going with an unproven commodity AT THIS TIME is the way to go.

Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB

Plus the Bears have a boring, run oriented offense with an much pizazz as dry toast

Do we really want somebody who coached under Lovie Smith in charge? I doubt know the man from Adam, so I have no clue. But the LAST thing I want is a plain-vanilla Dave Wannstedt type HC back in Miami.

Very fair...

I think I am just kind of bleary eyed and exhausted after the last week of waiting. Now im done with the coaching debates and am just looking for them to hire someone. But you have a very good point….

The thing everyone gets stuck on with Toub is that he is a special teams guy...

So was John Harbaugh. Special teams doesn’t mean he can’t coach.

And, the Bears really like him. They have him tapped to be their head coach if they lose Lovie Smith. It’s not like we are picking a guy who isn’t ready to be a head coach, or no one has ever head of. We just haven’t heard of him.

He’s not my top choice, but I’m not going to get too worked up over the fact that he’s a special teams guy.

It's not that he's a ST coach.

I just prefer Chudz, Philbin, and Carmichael that much more. I feel they can help get our offense back on track. There are worse candidates, but I’m just disappointed because there’s also better candidates.

But I just don’t want people to get wrapped up on the special teams portion.

If this is true, he must have knocked it out of the ballpark on the first interview. If that’s the case, why not bring him back in.

I’m still hoping it’s Chud, Chip Kelly, or someone else.

Special teams coordinator in Washington in 71 to 72 and the Los Angelos Rams before that.

So fans shouldn’t be too worked up over that I think. He has alot of experience in the NFL and has shown tremendous consistancy and leadership. Not a flashy pick but it may work out.

Dave Toub??????

Dave Toub has been the ST coach for the Bears since 2004. If he was that hot of a commidity why would he still be there. Plus having Devin Hester/Robbie Gould for most of his tenure really helps make him look good. Also to comment on the Tomlin post. He inherited a great team. Plus having Dick Lebeau there does not hurt at all. If we hire Toub I promise you we finish 5-11 or worse. Maybe it’s not a bad thing we can start the Barkley bandwagon early!

Special Teams coach for a truly "special" organization

It takes some seriously special f—-k ups to go from a model organization to a complete dump, the ugly duckling of the NFL, like the Dolphins have done these past 10+ years.

We’re down in the ranks of the Bengals and Browns, like it or not.

by hbkDolphins on Jan 13, 2012 5:33 PM EST reply actions

Finhead it could also mean Dennis Allen as I brought up in the other post.

if you remember last week on the NFL network there was speculation about both St. Louis and Miami giving him interviews (which the Rams planned to do and scrapped because of the Broncos advancement in the playoffs). If this regime is looking for change Dennis Allen really would bring change.

He is young and charismatic (he’s only 39) and he ran a completely defense than we have seen under Nolan. Not better or worse just different. 4-3 base, man coverage shell/pressure execution defense. Very traditional “bend but not break” style. Completely different than the modern deception defense run by Nolan. Although I like Mike Nolan alot.

Also I have for a while been working on a post on Matt Moore (and the offense) in the Denver game so Im very familiar with him.

I like him. Energetic, young and very different to what we have currently. Fans always love change. :)

I disagree...

Ireland is not the problem. Quick background: Ireland is the stepson of College Football Hall of Famer E. J. Holub, who played center and linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Texans. Ireland is also the grandson of Jim Parmer, who played for the Philadelphia Eagles and was a personnel executive for the Chicago Bears.
Anyone that has been around football, high-level football, for his entire life, knows a lot about the game. More than you or I.

He has hit on some really good draft picks and solid on others. And of course missed a few. I will say this, in his first “final-say-having” draft, it looks pretty GD good to me after year 1. Let’s take a quick look-see:

1. Pouncey – Future Pro Bowler and my vote for best lineman this season.
2. Thomas – Everyone can see how fast/quick/hard he hits the hole. He’s 8yds upfield before anyone touches him… if he can only stay healthy (and hold onto the ball).
3. No pick, traded up into 2nd to get Thomas.
4. Gates – obviously was a project and already beginning to have impact. Dude can fly.
5. Clay – another great pick for the 5th round. We’ve all seen what this guy can do.
6. Kearse – (Frank) but maybe they thought he was related to Jevon. (or maybe he is!)
7. Wilson – The only thing this guy is murdering are opposing wideouts.

I would also say that his FA acquisitions have been nearly fantastic? Let’s list them, starting with his most current and most power-wielding season:
1. Reggie Bush – Enough said.
2. Kevin Burnett – Showed what he can do during our 6-3 finish.
3. Matt Moore – He’s more of a gamer than Chad Henne. Not to mention playing for a new contract next year.
4. Jason Taylor – Ireland’s call to bring him back to walk off into the sunset as a Dolphin.
5. Karlos Dansby – 2 years ago, I know. But D & B will wreak havoc for a few years in the middle of the field for our D.
6. Paul Soliai – yeah, Franchise tag. Too much money but it also kept us out of a long-term deal if we want to go to a 4-3 or just find him replaceable in general. Maybe smarter move than you thought, eh?
7. That’s all I can think of right now as being major…but good Lord, not bad!

Cons:
1. Stupid effing question to Dez. Flat-out dumb. Unless… he was trying to be a dick; in that case…well done.
2. He kinda looks like a d-bag, doesn’t he?
3. Mark Columbo.

Sorry this is so long, maybe Tex will cut and paste it into a Fan Shot/Post or something. I’m a noob to this jblogging thing. (that’s a silent ‘j’ back there)

Why did they need to throw in the part about him not being ready to be a Head Coach.

No need to degrade the guy and he may very well find a Head Coaching position in this offseason, probably in Tampa Bay.

It would have been nicer to say that he isn’t the right candidate for this organization as of now. Instead of generalizing about his qualifications. Either way I’m not trying to be overly critical.

Ross..Once again

He wants to talk the talk, but, he can’t walk the walk.
He wants flashy, he wants explosive, he wants high-powered. Nix, not, nil.
This isn’t Wall Street. He needs to hold the tongue a bit and maybe do some learning first. Does he talk to other owners? Or just Carl? He’s now put a lot of his rep in the Ireland boat of lost dreams. We’re disillusioned fans pretty much. He doesn’t seem to instill much faith (so far).
Where this is going, I don’t know. Just yammering I guess. Mr. Ross, show us some prudent leadership! I’m not sold on Ireland, but, I’m not totally against him either. But, if he’s in the way of the prize..booooot, here you go!
As long as the HC we get is not an Ireland yes man, can think and stand up for himself then let’s go. But, let’s so soon.

The important question is

Does Fisher going to St. Louis help or hurt our chances of trading up to the 2nd pick?

I was neither for or against Fisher coming to Miami. I think it would have helped in getting guys like Jake Scott and Michael Griffin in FA though.

I really like this guy... here's the details from The Nat'l Football Post:

"Some of you will look at this name and say "but he’s only a special teams coach." Yes, that’s true, but he is one of the best special teams coaches in all of football and has been for the last eight years. Before Toub went to Chicago he was the assistant special teams coach in Philadelphia under a coach by the name of John Harbaugh. Harbaugh has gone from being a special teams coordinator to one of the better head coaches in the league. So there is precedent in the league for that type of advancement. Also, it must be pointed out that there is a Hall of Fame coach named Marv Levy who was a top special teams coach before becoming a head coach.

“During the period that Toub has been the Bears special teams coordinator there have been numerous rule changes designed to limit what can be done on teams, yet Toub’s units are consistently ranked near or at the top in the league. Under his guidance, Devin Hester has become the top return man of all time with 15 returns for touchdowns in less than six full seasons. Sure, Hester is a gifted return man, but Toub’s schemes may have a little to do with it.”

Robbie Gould and Devin Hester can make any coach look like a stud. A special teams coordinator is not going to cut it as far as i’m concerned. Of course it could work out, but I hope this is just to do something until other top coordinators are out of the playoffs

you're prob right

i’m sorry but i was really looking for the spash signing because i really think we are just a coach and a QB away from being a very good team. Like I said, Toub could very well end up being a good head coach, but i dont see it as likely. And i’m also wondering why he hasnt really gotten much consideration for HC in the past few years (at least I havnt heard much). The Bears have had great ST for years, so if Toub is well thought of around the league, he should have at least gotten consideration. But I digress, nothing I can say will change the outcome. I just hope the FO knows what they are doing and i will support the team either way…

coordinator might suck at being a head coach (see Wade Phillips) but someone that was known to be not so great with the X’s and O’s but knew how to put the right people in the right places and motivate those people to get the most out of them and have amazing success (see Jimmy Johnson). Also remember guys like Harbaugh (Balt.) and Cowher went from ST coach to HC and I would LOVE to have either of those guys.

Exactly. Being a good coordinator does not make you a good team manager which is essentially what

a HC is.

Well everyone said we always went for the

“savior”. This time we aren’t. The “savior” wanted to come and we wouldn’t give him what he wanted. So are we gonna bash the FO now for doing th opposite of what we complained about them doing every time we need a HC. We didn’t sign the “savior”. We could’ve, he was there for the taking. We are going after who we think best fits the organization. Right or wrong, you gotta the the FO credit for having the balls to do this. Especially knowing all the expectation.

This move to balls of watermelon proportions.

The whole purpose of hiring a "savior" is to give that person control.

If everything worked so well doing it the way you were doing it in the past, you wouldn’t need a “savior”.

I don’t know if what Ross wants, a shared responsibility between HC and GM, will work. One of those two have to have final say. I don’t think I have ever heard of a successful NFL organization where decisions are made by committee. I don’t think that works.

I think he was willing to go that far with Fisher, I’m not sure if he would do that for just any coach.

In all accounts, the HC and GM both have to work together like that anyways. a HC just wants his on GM so he will listen to what he says.

This^

I really like Toub….wanted Fisher first (not because I thought he would definitely be better but more of a guarantee).
I actually think Toub could be as good as or better then Fisher but the move is riskier because of no HC experience.
I like Toub over the OC canidates…I think he will command more respect and his ST track record is awesome + he is thought very highly of his current and former HC’s (they knew it was just a matter of time before moving up)!

The Right Stuff

Lets not rush into anything…Fishers gone…big deal…There are probably 100 guys out there who could qualify as an NFL head coach…We only need to find one….the right one…Give Ross and Ireland a break….I’ll support whomever they pick as I’m a fan for better ot worse… We can’t do much worse then George Wilson, Saban,Cameron and every other Dolphin coach not named Don Shula…Maybe we’ll finally get lucky(it’s friday the 13th)

Smart Man!

Everybody’s giving their opinions on how they think Ross messed up and he is a bad owner, I couldn’t disagree more. I think alot of these so-called fans have become delusional and are way too much stuck in the past. Wake up people, this is not 70s, 80s, or 90s for that matter, so please stop with the whining of how this was once such a proud organization blah, blah, blah. First of all this organization is proud and if the fans would start acting like grown ups and not little kids they would see we are moving in the right direction. We have a owner who is also a long time fan, so you should know he wants to see success in the team. Stop allowing the media to dictate your thoughts. I’m so glad we didn’t get Fisher, he’s not the right man for the job. But I understand why Ross went after him. He’s the only one with coaching experience and he wanted to bring some buzz to the team and fans. People need to realize he wants this team to succeed and he’s doing everything in his power to achieve that. It’s not his fault Harbaugh declined him, but you see he was going after the right man. People shouldn’t be upset that he had sparano waiting in the wings, it’s not personal it’s business. He didn’t pick sparano as a head coach, he was there when he bought the team. He didn’t realize the media was gonna be tracking his movements and make a big spectacle of it. By the way I think everybody needs to judge Ireland on his track record and stop joining him and sparano at the hip. Ireland may have a sucky personality, but the guy is a good GM. He’s brought talent to this team. You really can’t count first 2 years b/c Tuna had the say. He is working on getting us that elite quarterback when he is available. A lot of you so-called fans wanted to trade draft picks for orton, and even higher draft picks for palmer, how did that turn out. A guy like fisher would have done those dumb things and set the franchise back several years. Ireland is gonna bring in the talent that is going to continously make us a viable force, like the steelers, once we get our quarterback of the future. Everybody just needs to be patient b/c with Ross passion & money and Irelands’ talent evaluation this team is gonna go far! Sorry for the long post but I’m tired of people not seeing the big picture!
