Will You Accept This Rose?

Every Monday night, I am relegated to the computer between the hours of 8-10pm, in order to allow my wife to watch "The Bachelor/Bachelorette". A show, by the way that confirms a few sneaking suspicions I have always had.

1. We, as a civilization, are already well into our rapid, spiraling decline into the depths of hell.

2. Woman are bat-shit crazy. Not some of them. Not half of them. All of them. Period. (But I digress.)

Those of you that are married, or living with anyone possessing the XX chromosome, are probably subject to the same torture,or something very much like it. It's the price we pay for taking hold of the remote control every Sunday during the months of September through January. The priviledge would extend into February, but let's be honest, we are Dolphins fans, so the idea of football in February is as foreign to us as as the idea of wearing underwear is to Snooki. (Another show I loathe, BTW.)

My computer sits only fifteen feet from the TV, so even though I am not watching "The Bachelor" (I swear), I am still painfully aware of the shows inner workings. Basically, it is fifteen desperate (Yet strangely hot) women making fools of themselves in order to be the lone woman standing at the end, presumably to be offered an engagement ring by the lone "Bachelor", who is almost always the biggest Douche Canal you could imagine. (Douche Canal is a term that was just introduced to me, by the way, and I like it. A lot.) I can never help but look at these woman as pathetic, insecure and lonely, and pray that my now three year old daughter has enough self-esteem and integrity to never lower herself to the level of a network television reality star, desperate for the attention of some idiot.

Then something occurred to me this week:

In regards to the Jeff Fisher situation, we (Steven Ross, the team, the fans) have become one of these woman. Desperately vaying (Veying? Vai-ing? V-eye-ing?) for a declaration of love from our "bachelor." And the franchise is coming off every bit as pathetic as any one of those dingbats that line up for roses each week.

Where is the pride? Where is the self-esteem? I know our recent history speaks otherwise, but this is, or at least was, a proud, flagship franchise with a rich history and a devout fan-base, and it makes me sad that we are chasing around a coach with a decent (not great) track record, and competing so feverishly with a team like the St. Louis Rams, who have NEVER been able to find a place to really call home. Is THIS the level we have really sunk to?

We deserve better. This team deserves a coach who would kill for the right to patrol our sidelines, wearing aqua and orange each week. A coach, whether it be a young up-and-comer with passion, or a veteran coach with multiple rings, that wants nothing more than to return THIS franchise to the ranks of the perennially relevant.

And to be honest, I like Jeff Fisher. A week ago, I would have been quite pleased with the hire. Though I like Heather Graham too (restraining order be damned!), but if I ever had the opportunity to ask her out, and her response was "Well, let me see if something better comes along. I'll let you know", I would immediately walk away and try to find someone who was eager to spend time with me. (And Heather is on my three list, so if she said yes, my wife would have to look the other way.)

If I were Ross, I would call Fisher right now, give him my final offer and an hour to get back to me. And if in that hour the phone didn't ring, then I would have my answer, and move on to the next best guy. We are the Miami Dolphins, not the homely chick with the daddy issues and cankles....

Now with that said, I have to be going. I have "Teen Mom" DVR'd and I am dying to find out how the breastfeeding is going.......

UPDATE: Well, now with the announcement of Fisher going to the Rams, which came about eight minutes after I wrote this, my post is COMPLETELY irrelevant, but since you came and read it anyway, I'll throw in a few more thoughts, at no extra cost ...

OK, now we know. I'm the tiniest bit disappointed, but really not that broken up. The problem is now all the other candidates have sort of blended together, and Im not sure which one I would prefer. So now I am just hoping to have this done as quickly as possible, and move forward. I'll leave it to those of you that are better informed to debate who the coach should be......

We all have made a habit of knocking the Ross administration, but I will say this: This was the first time he was able to do anything without it turning into a leak-filled shit show. We have really heard NOTHING over the last few days about negotiations. So at least he is getting incrementally more professional, which is good. And I don't know that I buy into the whole Peterson Vs. Ireland death match thing. It seems a bit over-dramatized to me.....

What if we hired Andrew Luck to be the head coach? Kind of like a Pete Rose player/manager thing. Let's think outside the box, people....

I still kinda wish the Giants had missed the playoffs and fired Tom Coughlin. I think he has done an amazing job up here with that team. Oh well...

And if the NFC West being a weaker division really played a part in Fishers decision, then I am glad he isn't coaching here. The NFL is no place for gutlessness. I'll take the brashness of a Rex Ryan over the cowardice of a Jeff Fisher any day of the week...

I have two kids who mean more to me than I could have ever imagined before they were born. Having said that, does the death of Philbin's son HAVE to mean he can't be a head coach next year? I'm not insensitive to his situation, I just don't know that it is a foregone conclusion that he can't be a head coach with his head in the game eight months from now. And I know there is a lot of work to do now with scouting and free agency, but he wouldnt be solely responsible for that anyway. I dunno, I absolutely could be wrong....

Be prepared: You know damn well that the media is going to spend the next 48 hours killing Ross, Ireland and the whole organization over this Fisher thing. Let's try not to get too upset over it.....

Good read.

I just disagree with everyone’s rush mentality. I know its grueling for fans, but we have no idea whats going on behind closed doors. Adam Schefter reported that today was Fisher’s deadline, so we will see if that holds true. Notice there is no public complaint from the Rams or Dolphins, only media members and fans getting all riled up.

It's not so much about being impatient, per se...

As it is that he is not jumping at the opportunity. The day to day waiting game is more of a product of the media than anything else. “Insiders” are frustrated that they have nothing to report, so they just keep saying “Today may be the day”, and we all get positioned on the edges of our collective seats, only to go to bed unsatisfied each night. Its not that I am impatient, I just would like for him to have not had to take so much to to decide if we were good enough for him, especially when the money is reportedly so astronomical. When you propose to your girlfriend, you really dont want to hear “Well, let me think about it.” You want someone who is going to be thrilled at the very thought of marrying you….

The only reason I watch Jets games is to see if TODAY is the day Rex Ryan's fat heart gives out on him...

agree....

I also belive Philiban would b perfect in Miami, of course Flynn needs to come along. But totally agree as a fan my whole life (and I live in Pa and flew to Miami this season to see a game thankfully it was vs raiders :) that the next coach should be proud and want to be apart of the great dolphins team!!!

I suspect my wife is having an affair

Just haven’t worked out whether it’s Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert. She seems to spend a suspicious amount of time watching those guys online.

Joking aside, we don’t watch much TV these days, but I have never known her go for reality shows of any kind. That said, she’s never watched a Dolphins’ game with me either. Still, no-one’s perfect, right?

I don't mind sucking for Luck - but I draw the line at swallowing.

Todd Bowles

I’m still curious about the lack of respect/interest in him. I know he is an unknown HC commodity, but he has been highly regarded as a young talent on the sidelines for the last few years. As HC in the last 3 games, he went 2-1 against divisional opponents, and almost upset New England on the road. Only the Buffalo game was “meaningless”, although it sure looked important to the Bills when we were playing. The Pats (bye week, home-field advantage) and the Jets (playoffs) both had high stakes on the line, and the Dolphins outplayed all three opponents for 11 of the 12 quarters. My concern is that Ross’ “young Don Shula” is right under his nose and he doesn’t even know it. However, it’s beginning to appear that there are a lot of things that Ross doesn’t know….

Go Dolphins.

If I had a tagline, this would be it.

by lancelotlink on Jan 13, 2012 6:05 PM EST reply actions

I am intrigued by this as well....

WHy are we talking to a relatively unknown, yet reportedly well respected guy like Dave Toub, when we have a relatively unknown, yet well respected guy here already, who, quite frankly, did a remarkable job in a tough spot at the end of the season? THis guy could be the next Mike Tomlin, for all we know. (And I dont mean that in a “Hes also a black guy” kinda way…)

The only reason I watch Jets games is to see if TODAY is the day Rex Ryan's fat heart gives out on him...

by Brantner78 on Jan 13, 2012 6:19 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly....

…if Toub is that impressive, then I get it. But Bowles is already in place, knows all the personnel, has a relationship with the coordinators and the FO. Toub would be essentially starting over. Also, he’s a special teams coach, which is great when you have guys like Devin Hester and Robbie Gould, but I can’t think of another ST guy who went straight to HC. Bowles at least has those 3 games on the sideline, and he performed well. Even during the Fisher nonsense, I still wondered why Bowles was so lightly-regarded.

Speaking of Fisher, here’s my prediction: The Rams will win a Super Bowl with him as head coach, but they will be the Los Angeles Rams when it happens.

Go Dolphins.

If I had a tagline, this would be it.

well bowles did have all his timeouts at the end of the half, hope they concider him

REC'ed !

Daddy issues and cankles,….LMFAO,….

This team deserves a coach who would kill for the right to patrol our sidelines, wearing aqua and orange each week.

After reading that sentence,….I was completely fired up ! Then I came up with (in my head) the semi-perfect idea. I’m going right out to Barnes & Noble, buy football coaching for Dummies, then make my back to Miami on Monday, and patrol the sidewalks in front of the team’s training facility with a sign in hand that reads :<img src="http://Photobucket"/>
On the flip side : HIRE ME !

Now, of course this is sarcasm. However I think you hit the nail on the head. We need a coach that burns with desire to be our coach, a guy with a fire in his belly & a chip on his shoulder. A guy with nerves of steel, point after attempt,…..nope, going for two after every score ! Why,….because we can !!! I want a coach with some stone, a guy that will bring us back. Not to respectability,….but to a place where other teams fear the beat down that is about to be applied to them. Am I dreaming ??? Maybe, but that’s what I want. To see this team rise from underachiever status and start kicking ass and taking names,….

Marching to the beat of a different drummer since 1965...

Ross and Ireland (and Peterson) need to do some soul searching about this organization.

They need to understand why the two biggest HC candidates the last two years (Harbaugh and Fisher) have turned them down. They then need to address the issue(s) as to why they would choose the 49ers and Rams respectively.

Follow the national media and you will see things like Peter King, when asked about the perception of the Dolphins FO, his response is: Proceed With Caution.

I live in the Chicago area and the local radio is asking why the Phins have sunk so low? How bad are things in Miami that someone would choose the Rams over a storied franchise like the Dolphins?

Armando sums it up nicely:

The truth is the Dolphins have sunk from a franchise that once could lure practically any candidate — Jimmy Johnson, Nick Saban, Bill Parcells — it chased away from other suitors. In this case, the Dolphins find themselves placing second in a two-team competition to a St. Louis franchise that could be on the move from its current city in the span to three seasons, a club that has been one of the NFL’s losingest franchises for nearly a decade.

What's to understand?

Harbaugh turned us down because the job wasn’t actually vacant. Fisher turned us down because we couldn’t give him all the power.

IMO, Ross did the right thing today. He wasn’t going to let Fisher dictate how Ross runs his own franchise. Ross made it clear that Ireland is the GM and he has the say-so. Whether you like Ireland or not is irrelevant. Ross said that Ireland is his guy and he didn’t emasculate him by giving in to Fisher’s demands; he didn’t emasculate him like he did Sparano last year (think he learned a few things?)

Speaking of the Sparano/Harbaugh deal, I think it’s fairly clear why Harbaugh said no, and rightfully so. Put yourself in Harbaugh’s place for a minute. Here comes this GM and owner, flying all the way across the country to woo you into taking a HC position. Only the HC isn’t actually available because the job is currently filled. I’m sure during the span of that night, Ross intimated that if Harbaugh would say yes, he’d fire Sparano and make him HC. Now, if you’re Harbaugh, that’s pretty flattering. But at the same time, it makes you wonder, “Would he do something like that to me when I’m HC?” When you look at it like that, it makes sense.

I think there is a lot that needs to be understood.

My advice to this organization is “do your homework”. Part of the reason to fire Sparano before the end of the year is to start the dialogue with potential replacements. Yes I know you can’t formally interview a HC candidate prior to the end of the season, but you can reach out to their agents to find out what it would take to get them. If the deal breaker was control or final say, shouldn’t you have know that earlier in the process?

Plus, numerous reports prior to the decision, had said that Miami’s offer was total control to Fisher. Omar, Armando, LaCanfora, Glazer, King all talked about it. Are we to assume they were all wrong now, or are we to believe the spin that Ross is putting out there?

I believe that Miami gave Fisher everything that he wanted to become HC and they were turned down. Despite what Ross is saying to the media about the situation (and by the way, why isn’t Ireland, the GM, talking to the media? Shouldn’t he be addressing the HC search too?) and trying to put a positive spin to this whole thing, he knows he lost after he put all his chips on the table. That can’t be a good feeling.

so your going by what you THINK might have happened? so if yo ugo by that then why does what talking heads say have any more weight then what ross said?? why do you believe one over the other. yo uwant to believe the ones who spend all day reporting and not the ones who where sitting at the hiring interview?? ok got ya.. yo ugo with that.

Rec'd for the gospel and Heather Graham analogy

Usually go straight to porn when I leave this site. Not now :-). Personally, I did not want Fisher but any coach whom is to succeed will want to be involved in decision making, whether it be Cowher, Gruden, Philbin, etc. Their system will be predicated by their personnel and if you can tell me when have Ireland coached or why he is getting a pass on 3 consecutive losing seasons, how do he still get the nod for control over a coach’s future. We find ourselves heading in the same direction for 2012 and that’s not what the off season suppose to bring.

Get the best man to clear every hurdle that stand in the Dolphins way, go RG3.
