The Mentality of This Team

Let me start by saying Brantner78 wrote a very good post about the problems of our team.  It is titled Lipstick On A Pig and I suggest you read it to get a very good opinion of it.  SInce he already covered the big reasons coaching has to do with the losses I am going to cover instead the mentality I see this team having.  While Game planning, play calling, and etc have a lot to do with winning and losing, I have decided to cover another important aspect, Mental Toughness and Mentality.

Mental toughness can be best described by giving an example.  Ryan Fitzpatrick threw I believe two INT's in yesterdays game vs the Patriots.  Now a player can do one of two things when this happens.  They either let it get to them and can't seem to make the plays to bring their team back or they can do what a Mentally Tough player does and shrug it off and make plays and win the game.  A lot of your great QB's are mentally tough and able to make mistakes and then play like it didn't happen.  It doesn't just apply to QB's either.  A LB might miss a big tackle that lets the opposing RB turn a 4 yard run into a 35 yard run.  But a mentally tough player are the ones that turn around and force a fumble on the next play.

Unfortunately our team seems to lack this.  Ever notice when our team turns it over it always seems our offense just dies for the rest of the game?  That last drive of Cleveland is a perfect example too.  Penalty after penalty and big play after big play and it seemed our defense just couldn't recuperate long enough to stop Cleveland from scoring.  All game they played great but then as soon as things get a little bad they just seem to not have that Mental Toughness to turn it around and make ONE PLAY.  As I stated also, our offense seems to come out with the guns armed and on target but if just one player misses the target they all panic and start missing together.  Drops by Marshall in the endzone, fumbles by RB's, missed blocks by the o-line, and it goes on and on.  Like I said, I know game planning and all that has to do with it but it seems our coaches can't get our players to look past their mistakes.  which brings me to the next thing I mentioned, Mentality.

Mentality is nothing more than a state of mind.  What you believe you can do and can't do.  It seems to me this team plays not to lose.  I know that has been said so much but when you think about it is true.  Teams that play to win know they have to get a turnover on defense when things aren't going your way.  Our defense just says lets make them go three and out.  That is all we need.  Teams that play to win always say lets get a turnover, lets stuff the run game and get a fumble, lets get an INT and try to return it for a TD.  Our offense, regardless of the new OC, always seems to say "when we get in the redzone it is ok to kick a FG."  I mean it is still points and our defense can help us win it.  Sorry Dolphins but every aspect of your team should want to dominate the other team.  Not just beat them but dominate them.  Tony has had to put in their minds it is ok to kick FG's and defense we just need you to make them punt and not make big plays.  I am honestly sick of it,

In the end I know this might not be as important as great coaching skills mentioned in that great write up by Brantner78, but I believe this is just as important.  Game after Game it seems our team can't recover from mistakes and are content on making three points instead of six.  In the end I wish this team would prove they want to win by playing like they want too instead of playing not to lose.  This is just my opinion on one of the many problems of our team but as always GO PHINS.
