X-factors, Sleepers and Things Hardly Talked About - Houston 5.0
As you may know, this is a post about those things that don't usually make it to people's "keys to the game" lists, network commentators "analysis", or the USA today's previews. This isn't about the obvious concerns and hopes for the team. I am not asking how Colombo will handle their DE talent, or whether Henne can show even more improvement. This isn't about AJ, Mario Williams, B Marshall, or C Wake.
It is about those things you notice as fans game in and game out that don't make highlight reals but we all know influence the game. It is the penalties, the role players, clock management, and play calling. It is the special teams gaffs, turf, or how players do against certain types of defensive schemes that might make them play different than normal.
Last week it was things that few people mentioned, like conditioning and the hurry up offense. I get partial credit for penalties and brian hartline, as Hartline did get a TD and we did have 8 penalties.
I also am much more interested in what you have to say than what I have to say. I already know what I have to say. I also know that what I have to say is often wrong and usually "strange".
So, my X-factor for the game is offensive clarity as opposed to confusion. I know it sounds wierd, but we burned two time outs on our opening drive last week, and I feel like it is a rare week that Henne has 3 timeouts going into the 2 minute warning. New system, yes, but Henne called time out often in the old system as well (although not being able to audible may have had something to do with that). Frankly, with the fact that offenses will try and use the hurry up against us often, if we are going to burn time outs, I would rather we do it on D.
My Sleeper is on the Texans, and I hope I am wrong. His name is.... Jason Allen. The guy is physically gifted and often wanders into the ball. He had 6 ints last year. Yes, I know, he has many issues mentally so maybe he is just lucky at times, but if we need to rely on Henne's arm in the 4th and he forces things, Allen could have a big game. For a phins sleeper, I pick Clay.
Hope to hear from you.

My sleeper is our front 7 are they going play like they did last week or play like a top 3 unit
The fact that we got no pressure on Brady piss me off
WE WINNING THE SUPERBOWL DON'T MATTER IF HENNE SUCK DON'T MATTER IF REGGIE NOT A FEATURE BACK DON'T MATTER IF WE NEED A BETTER TIGHT END DON'T MATTER IF COLOMBO SUCK DON'T MATTER IF WE NEED A BETTER SAFETY DON'T MATTER IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE

We've got trouble
if the line doesn’t get pressure on Schaub, we are in for another long day. Schaub is no Brady, but he will still kill us. Owen Daniels is clearly an above average tight end, and of course Andre Johnson is a beast. They also have good 2nd and 3rd wr’s who are capable of making plays.
Not to be Debbie Downer, but I would rate Houston’s O-line ahead of New England’s. Nolan better have some tricks up his sleeve or we will remain winless against the juggernaut franchise known as the Texans. Ouch.
I also don’t have a problem using timeouts whereever they are needed. If Henne doesn’t call a timeout, the play results in no gain, and we kill a drive, everyone would be complaining. Use the timeouts when needed most. You can’t look forward to the end of the half and know that you will need them. For example, Monday night New England had the ball at the end of the 1st half. The one place I hate seeing a timeout burned is on 1st and 10 at midfield or on our side of the 50. Just run the play or audible out of it and move on to 2nd down.
Nobody hurt a tackler like Zonk did.

"I also don’t have a problem using timeouts whereever they are needed."
But if they are needed because of regular miscommunications between the QB and his offense, then I think there is space for criticism. That’s why I said the X-factor was offensive confusion and not just offensive time outs. If the offense can communicate better on those plays, we keep our time outs.

A few more steps in the dark and it's Willie Lanier. By the time I get to the bathroom, I'm flashing back to Dick Butkus and Ray Nitschke. The second time out it was 4th and 1.
Most coaches would use a time out in case. To weigh the options and make the best call.

I'm interested in why you think Texans O line is better than NE's
I’m not too familiar with Texans line other than Winston Justice (I think). It’s hard to be at the same level as (no to mention better than) the Patsies line. Mankins alone is a monster, who even compares to him on the Texans?
Honestly curious, I’m very ignorant of the Texies.

I'll try a link
Foster wasn’t the leading rusher in the NFL by sheer talent. I know it’s only an opinion, but here is the link: http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/nfl/38453/179/2011-offensive-line-rankings

our RT is Eric Winston, not justice.
We dont have one lineman that stands out like you makins and your boy long. They all work good together, In case you dont know we run a zone blocking scheme.
Eric Winston! That's right....
No Mankins for us, that’s the Patriots. Outside of Long, the other “name” we have on the line is the rookie Pouncey at center, who I have a feeling might have fun with your NT, who I hear no one is high on.
Yeah, the O lines that have been together awhile are doing well right now….

Hello i am a Texans fan and just stopping by on you post to see some stuff.
If i am not mistaken wasn’t clay on the inactives last week? also is he really your starting fullback, if so how has he looked in the preseason and all? I really think yall should move him back to RB personally. Anyways my X factor for texans is Kareem jackson, only because johnathan joseph will be on brandon marshall. Dolphins x factor will have to be O-line. If they can stop our new revamped D then it could turn out to be a good game, but if i am y’all i will not hold my breath.
Welcome!
The reason I didn’t put the o-line is precisely because it is too important and too obvious. This is a quirky post in its way, but the point is to highlight those aspects of the game that we know are important but don’t talk about. With Mario Williams headlining what looks to be a talented bunch, against an O-line that realistically only has a left side (mind you, with Jake Long, who can take anyone), that is possibly the first thing I would list at.

I think jake long is great but when you have mario and antonio smith coming at you going to be a long day for him.
I thinkwe are both homers when it comes down to it, but don't be surprised if all of your real pressure comes against our right side
It will be a long day for Jake Long, but he is capable of handling it.

exactly. i am worried about it.

you have a good d-line
but Jake Long takes anyone out of a game
its not even a matchup
teams should just start putting their worst defensive player on long
The only Chad Henne supporter left.
yea but whats sad is we dont have a worst player in our front 7.
well except shaun cody but he dont count.
We really didn't get to see him much...
But he was apparently good enough to not only beat out Lousaka Polite, but they cut Lousaka Polite on top of it. I am kinda hoping he is someone they kept under wraps for a reason.
Prove everyone that said you weren't a franchise QB wrong, Henne. "WE WANT HENNE!!" GO PHINS!! What can I say I am a homer, I have come to terms with that and accepted it. I predict 10-6 and a wildcard berth. Jets got worse this year when they lost Ellis to the Patriots. The Patriots are going to be more solid on defense this year than they have in the past.

that might have boiled down more with money then anything else i bet.
I think clay is going to be a good player.
My x factor is the fan in seat 23, row 11,
who shouts boo! at Andre Johnson, just as he is about to make a key catch. He drops it, and the game turns on this incident.
People aren’t really talking about this, but it seems pretty obvious to me.

You're right about one thing ... Jason Allen is definitely a sleeper....
I think he must have slept for like 4 years in Miami … I haven’t really kept up with him much since then … But I did see him sleeping when Santonio Holmes torched him to steal the game away from the Texans last year.

but how many TDs did the opposing teams score on him during that time??
I think it is fair to say if you have a 2 TD to 1 INT ratio, you are harming the team more than you are helping it… I didn’t look up the numbers or go back to the film, but that is sure the way it seemed.

That he was a bad CB does not mean he can’t have a good game. He has had them in the past.
