Hey guys, I’m going to go over Daboll’s playcalling. I decided to make this post after seeing some of the shortcomings Brown’s fans complained about. So, let’s get it going.
First Quarter: The main issue many Browns fans complained about was that Daboll often had a master first drive, but failed to make adjustments when necessary. We saw some of that. After getting a great TD on a flawless first drive, in which we score and run out 7 minutes of clock time. We never really got that magic going again all game. On the second drive, Daboll failed to call effective plays as we went 3 and out. Daboll could have ran a screen on the first down, or had LJ run it instead of Bush, those little things can kill a drive.
Second Qurter: On the next drive, we punt again, as we fail to gain the first down on 3rd and 2. Again, that is a play where we should have put LJ or Hilliard instead of Bush. On the third drive, we fail to get more than one yard, but that was no fault of Daboll’s. Even thoug we punt on the fourth drive, I had no problems with the playcalling. On the fifth drive, we start out with decent field position at the 28, but due to an Incognito penalty, we fail to gain the first down. At that point, we were halfway through, and only down by 7, you would expect Daboll to change some of his schemes but I failed to see it.
Third Quarter: On the sixth drive, we manage to get a TD, but that was only possible due to Sapp tipping the ball to Odrick for the INT. On the next drive, we drive up the field but, one again, fail to score the TD. Henne keeps the drive alive by reading the D and adjusting accordingly, but Daboll forces the ball to Marshall too much at the 2 yard line. When the Marshall pass did not work the first time, Daboll should have adjusted and called a pass with Bess, who is much more suited to those circumstances, a screen pass to Bush or Bess, or a run. That play was an example of another issue that Brown’s fans had with Daboll, he was TOO aggressive, calling big plays when a conservative play would have been more necessary. On our next drive, we were at 2nd and 4, a perfect situation to have Bush run it outside with Fasano and Hilliard as extra blockers. We could have picked up a solid gain and kept the drive alive. Instead, Daboll opts for a deep pass to Glyde Gates (not a typo). There is a time and a place for deep passes, and that certainly wasn’t it. On the next drive, the same thing happens, we are at 2nd and 5, again, a perfect place to run it with Reggie, yet Daboll opts for a pass, killing the drive.
Fourth Quarter: On the next drive, Daboll and Henne lead the offence down the field, putting them in a perfect 4th and goal at the 1 situation. Daboll decides to get cute and run a fade route, I mean really, I firmly believe that teams should never run a fade route because it is nearly impossible to convert. And not only does he run a stupid play, he also runs it with Hartline, Hartline is NOT the right receiver to run a fade route, they should have at least had Marshall there. On the next drive, we score a good TD, no problems there. The final drive went ok as well, nothing we could have done, even though Henne did NOT deserve that INT.
What can we take of this, Daboll is brings energy and exciting playcalling to this team, but sometimes uses that aggresiveness at the wrong time. He is obviously a definite upgrade from Henning, but still needs some improvement. He is a great OC, but is sort of like Henne in some ways, he needs some development and maturity to live up to his potential
