I'm suprised that

Wilson is listed as the #5 CB on the depth chart and that Odrick is listed behind Merling at DE. But there was no shocking moves at the starter roles.

I got S + What a Dog's Tail Does.
Bring back Pat White. He is the chosen one.

Agreed, I expect BOTH those to change

How great is it having Odrick as a backup. Our DL is NASTY.

Well...

What I heard was that it was listed as Merling/Odrick

Prove everyone that said you weren't a franchise QB wrong, Henne. "WE WANT HENNE!!" GO PHINS!! What can I say I am a homer, I have come to terms with that and accepted it. I predict 10-6 and a wildcard berth. Jets got worse this year when they lost Ellis to the Patriots. The Patriots are going to be more solid on defense this year than they have in the past.

Surprises me, too.

I mean, who is Jose Perez? Didn’t he used to play 2nd base for the Mets?

Also thought it was interesting to see they went ahead and listed Clay as a FB, rather than a TE. Not surprising, but we weren’t sure where he would be listed.

We need more depth at kicker.

Also, is Grisby the odd man out if he’s still 5th at RB?

What do you do when no one respects you? When you're so low you're not even an underdog? When your enemies are called kings? William Wallace would fight for every yard with his face painted aqua and orange. And so we will fight, not just for yards, but for touchdowns. And then they will fear us.

The OL chart concerns me

1) Incognito struggled at LG last year – he started to shine when he was moved to center. So now he’s back where he was ineffective. I thought it made more sense to have Pouncey play LG (i understand he can play G well) and let Incognito play where he WAS effective last year C.

2) Colombo listed #1 at RT and you guys know how I feel about this. He basically played on one leg last year and yeilded 7 sacks from the RT position for Dallas. HIs injury history is long (dating back to the Bears).

They need someone else to step up at RG so Carey can move back to RT Colombo is not going to cut it – Dallas knew that.

Anyone else concerned with the early look at the OL chart?

by scrappy the wildcat on Aug 8, 2011 5:58 PM EDT reply actions

I can't imagine a healthy Long doesn't kick Murtha over to RT.

according to Mosul
•Lydon Murtha is listed as the starting left tackle, but will fall back to number two once Jake Long is off the physically unable to perform list.

I am hoping Colombo doesn;t make the team. He wasn;t good enough for Dallas’ struggling OL and now he listed RT1 for MIami albeit very early on.

I am not sold on Murtha at this point either btw. I just have to beleive someone better than Colombo HAS to emerge. PLEASE.

Agree with you about the OL alignment.

The center doesn't just block!

When the huddle breaks, it’s the centers job to scan the field and inform the line of any probable QB problems, and call out what routine they’ve practiced to protect him. That is just ‘one’ of the handful of requirements of the Center. Each position has a scheme to perform.
Of coarse the QB makes all the calls, or changes before the snap…but the center is the second most important player on offense.

That’s why I was saying, you cannot just pull a guard…put him at center, and say he played great because he blocked his guy.

I would much rather have a really good Center and an ok LG than the opposite.

Incognito was overhyped at C last year, he may have been slightly better than when he was at G, but you have to remember he had Berger at C to work with while at LG.

Really though, shouldn’t Incognito move back to his natural position where he did very well on the Rams? Wasn’t he RG there? If Carey has LT experience then he can definitely play LG.

Definitely some unpleasantness

1. Murtha’s presence at LT underscores Long’s health problems. I’d take an injured Long over a healthy Murtha any day.

2. It appears that, despite last year’s praise for Incognito’s C play, Baby Pouncey is better.

3. I don’t like that Colombo is our starting RT. Bad sign, given his last season.

4. Wait…so Reggie is really going to be our fist RB??

5. Defense looks solid, though I wish Odrick had done enough to be higher.

6. I was hoping Gates would beat Hartline immediately.

This is valueable time to evaluate Murtha as the #1 OT backup or as the starting RT.

Going up against Wake often can only help him.

Also, this lets Long heal for another month.

This is the depth chart for Atlanta.

Did you really expect Long to play with no reps at TC? This means nothing as far as his recovery is concerned.

Willis just signed and will see limited reps at RT. Murtha won’t get reps because he’s playing LT. There is a limited amount of people there. This isn’t our opening day depth chart people!

Bush is a vet and is competing for the #1 job. This doesn’t mean he’s the starter, especially since Thomas still has a lot to learn.

Again, Gates has a lot to learn and Hartline has been productive. Gates needs at least preseason games to be a starter. Still, he’s unlikely to start this year anyways.

Benny Sapp gets paid too much to be the 5th or 6th CB.

Like to see Hartline being the #2 WR.

RT concerns me atm, but if Murtha gained strength and can run block; we have both starting OTs done for the next 10+ years.

Why is Odrick so low?

Why is Wilson a CB?

Clemons in the lead!

Hope Spitler makes it this year.

Bush ahead of Thomas? Interesting, might have to do with the O implemented.

OG depth is just miserable.

I expect Clay to be a TE by end of PS or to be used like another TE.

Our O-line is fine

We will carry 9 O-linemen. We’ll have 4 OTs with Long, Murtha, Colombo, and Garner. Our interior linemen will be Incognito, Pouncey, Carey as starters with Berger and then Jerry/Feinga/unnamed FA as backups. Garner’s versatility to play all of the line positions, plus Murtha’s apparent emergence as a capable tackle makes our O-line better across the board. We have a good starting lineup with good depth now.

I'm surprised that people are surprised.

I knew Bush was going to be the starter. Coach said it early on and it was intimated that him starting and getting a lot of touches would be in his contract.

Also, he’s not returning punts, which means he’ll be healthy. I think he’s only really been injured on punt returns.

That is the amazing part to me. He plays 3 O-Line positions in one game.

I believe he started at LG. Then Carey got hurt for a couple of series. So he goes in at RT. Then Grove got hurt and he plays Center. You can’t teach that shit or game plan for it. To know all those assignments is one thing. To do it in one game is unheard of. LOL The only position he did not play was LT that year if I remember right.

Where's Brett Brackett?

Jimmy Wilson will beat out Tyron Culver at S. It’s nice to see that he can also be used at corner though. We’ve needed a safety who can cover a TE or 3rd WR for quite some time.

Devlin looks like he’ll be on the practice squad at this point. If theirs a supplemental draft, Terrell Pryor will be our 3rd QB…

Why isn’t Reggie going to return punts??? Unless Clyde Gates, can really handle the return duties better, there is no reason why Reggie shouldn’t be the punt returner!

Nate Garner has been moved to RT. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him moved back to LG though once Jake Long returns and Lydon Murtha is kicked over to the other side.

That is all for now.

by JP 23 on Aug 8, 2011 6:39 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Nearly all but one minor stress calf injury...

came on punt returns. If they really plan on utilizing him in the offense then keep him off of punt returns.

On to da next one!

by TAYDIGGA on Aug 8, 2011 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Why do we need Bush to return punts in preseason?

We know what we get with him and putting him out on returns in preseason is asking for trouble since he has injury issues. Let Gates get some reps.

Disappointed that Odrick is so low on the depth chart.

He needs to show something this season. Also, I must not have been paying attention, because it’s weird to see Carey penciled in under RG.

I think it's interesting how they have Wilson listed

We typically keep 9 DBs: 5 corners and 4 safeties. I think we’ll carry 4 corners and 4 safeties with Wilson being listed at S, but could play corner in necessary. Although Wilson has been playing with the 2nd team some.

I find it interesting that Jimmy Wilson is being used as the safety in the box on the second team defense.

We don’t need another JA.

He'll be listed as a safety...

but his versatility to play CB means we can carry 5 safeties and only 4 CBs. I don’t think they’ll do it the same way as Allen. He’ll be a safety that can play as CB out of the safety position.

Kinda like what happened with Nolan Carrol.

And he is doing fine in TC so far. This coaching staff has isolated him on Marshall and those two duked it out during the scrimmage.

People need to stop flipping

This is the depth chart for Friday, not for the regular season.

Murtha is playing LT and Ray Willis just signed, so of course Colombo is starting at RT.

Who cares if Bush isn’t KR/PR? We know what he can do. He has a history with injuries and having him on ST during meaningless games is asking for trouble.

Long not on the depth chart means nothing about his recovery. He’s not playing in the preseason without TC reps, period.

Clemons and Bush as starters means nothing right now. Sparano has said Daniel Thomas still needs to pick up a lot of things so of course he’s not going to start, but they do expect Bush to be the featured RB anyways.

Who really thought Gates would win the #2 job without a single preseason game? Anyone other than Toast? Anyone? Spoiler alert: Gates will probably not be a starter this year.

This is the depth chart for Friday, so stop being so disappointed that position battles haven’t been won yet.

It's merely a gauge to measure progress over the next few weeks.

What do you do when no one respects you? When you're so low you're not even an underdog? When your enemies are called kings? William Wallace would fight for every yard with his face painted aqua and orange. And so we will fight, not just for yards, but for touchdowns. And then they will fear us.

Bess returning kicks seems like a bad idea to me

If the past is any indicator of the future, Bess will probably be Henne’s safety net again this year, meaning he’ll be catching alot of passes across the middle and probably eating a bunch of tough MLB/Nickel CB shots. Couple this with returning kicks and I think a valuable part of our offense is gunna be getting hit a little too much. Was hoping Gates would get a shot running a few back actually….
