Sam's Dolphins Flawless 2011 NFL Predictions

PrintHey guys, as you know I haven't been here in a while. The reasons for my absence concerns none of you, so it shall remain a secret.
Beyond that, I've gotten crazy excited for this upcoming season, and I'm sure all of you losers-who-read-sports-blogs-on-saturday-nights are as well. I've made a few "unique" predictions, and I've decided to share them with all of you.
1. Mike Nolan will lead a top-tier defense this season.
Our young secondary will continue to drastically improve. Reshad Jones will take over as the starting Free Safety, and impress a lot of people. Vontae Davis will also become one of the leagues elites at corner. Karlos Dansby will successfully lead the linebackers, en route to another 90+ tackle season, and Koa Misi will record more than 10 sacks. Cam Wake can speak for himself. Our lineman are the only defensive wild card, being that a lot of their success will depend on the play of the young, unproven Jared Odrick, and another semi-unproven player in Kendall Langford.
2. Chad Henne will do better than expected
But that's not saying much. Hopefully Brian Daboll will better utilize his raw arm strength, and create some nice Henne-to-Marshall bombs. Expect a solid statistical improvement from last season. Hopefully, we see him play with a little chip on his shoulder. However, if Henne starts slow, don't be surprised to see Matt More handed the reigns quickly. This is something I do not want to happen.
3. The "Reggie Bush-Daniel Thomas" tandem will be much more successful than the "Ricky-Ronnie" one.
Although I don't expect huge things from either one of our new backs, I like the "thunder-lighting" combo much more than the "thunder-weaker thunder" combo. Hopefully, Thomas' constant pounding between the tackles will set up some nice plays by Bush to the outside. I'd like to see some new formations utilized (not Wildcat, which I expect to be absent this season) that feature both backs.
4. We will see a huge O-Line Improvement
Mike Pouncy will prove his worth immediately. He will be comparable to his brother, and will lead this new O-line to great things. The addition of Mark Colombo and Vernon Carey's move to Guard will also both help. If the Dolphins reach success this year, this line will be to thank. Big improvements in both run, and pass protection.
Final Predictions
The Dolphins will have a 8-8 record, and finish 2nd in the division behind the Patriots. The Jets will also have an 8-8 record, but hopefully we beat them out in division play. Unfortunately, I can't see a playoff run this season.
Pro Bowl appearances by Cam Wake (who will lead the league in sacks), and maybe even D-MVP. Also, Vontae Davis.
Again, it's good to be back, and I look forward to another season with the Phinsider (except for Tex, I hate you).

haha, not sure
if i should be flattered or greatly disturbed by the last statement. lol. i like your optimism. sometimes i think the fo sucks, but then i think they are great the next minute. i will approach this season with great optimistic caution(is that possible?). im not completely sold on everything the fo does, but i will support the dolphins players, whomever they maybe. the defense will be top 5, i think. its the offense that concerns me. weve had good additions thru fa and the draft, but i feel we are still missing a piece. maybe a te(miller)? perhaps a proven rb(bradshaw? still like bush tho). maybe at qb(hope henne pans out). oh and welcome back.

I dont think our D line is a wildcard...
I think they are one of the strongest points of our defense and Kendall Langford has definetly proven himself. I believe he was ranked as one of the top 3-4 DEs last year.

That didn’t really make sense- that unit is so deep, we almost have too much talent there. Odrick, Langford, Merling, Starks, Solia, and McDaniel could all start on most teams. I’d say safety is our biggest wild card on defense with bell aging and an average cover guy and two unproven youngsters in Clemons and Jones. But ourD is 100 percent a top 5 unit.

langford's never had more than 3 sacks or 33 tackles in a season
don’t get me wrong, he’s very talented, and i think he can have a solid year. however, he is not nearly a top 5 d-end at this point. please show me where u found that ranking.

Right Here. Starks and Langford have been some of the best 3-4 defensive ends in the league over the last few years. We have talented depth players too in McDaniels, Odrick, and Merling. Solia is starting to come into his own too. The D-line is the most stacked part of our defense!

So we will have
a top tier defense, an improved Chad Henne, a better rushing attack, and a huge o-line improvement but only get one more win than last season? Doesn’t make sense to me.
Also, d-line is the strongest position on this team. Misi won’t record 10 sacks because he will be used on 1st and 2nd down, mainly to stop the rush, and Taylor will come in on 3rd down. Oh and Kendall Langford is proven. He was told he was getting a contract extension.
10 wins seems more likely for this team if that all happens, which I think can happen.

Well, we did a good job fixing the defense in the last off-season and a decent job fixing the special teams during the season. Now let's find an offense!

Henne will play better, all of those defensive studs, Thomas and Bush will be better than R&R, and we win 1 more game. Gosh, if those things don’t happen I’d hate to see what our record will be.

The D-line is the strength of the defense
With the emergence of Soliai our defensive line proved to be one of the best in the NFL. Add Odrick who was the opening day starter at end before being injured in the 1st game of the season. his injury my have been a blessing in disguise.
Also Merling who has never really play up to his potential should be back at full strength after missing all but 5 games coming back from an achilles injury. Ronald Fields should be depth behind Soliai. He played Under Nolan as a Niner as well as a Bronco.

Anywhere from 6-10 to 10-6
which averages out to 8-8…all depends on Henne (or Moore or whoever). I expect the D to be top three, however, barring injury, and better than the Jets’ D. I realize that there is a lot of compettition in AFC for playoff spots, but I do think it is more than possible for Fins to get one of them, mostly because (thanks to the media) many opponents will under-rate the Fins offense and whoever the QB is. Now it would really really help if the fans do get behind whoever the QB is! (Really, booing Henne was dumb and not responsible freedom of speech).
If you think you're a wise guy, then you're a pain in the butt for us real wise guys!

Hmm...
1. I agree with the 8-8, or thereabouts
2. I disagree about the Jets. They will do better than 8-8
3. I disagree about the RBs. Saying Bush/Thomas will be definitively better than Brown/Williams is very, VERY optimistic. They will do reasonably well, and Thomas may show potential.
4. I agree about the O-line, with the slight qualification that Pouncey, as good as he is, may not be better than his brother.
5. Disagree about the QB. Henne will do “better than expected?” Well that’s pretty easy to do right now, because expectations are rather low. He’s coming off the sophomore starter slump, but surpassing Dolfan’s expectations is going to be a piece of cake. He’ll probably be like…the 12th or 13th best QB in the league, and the Dolphins will draft a rookie QB in 2012.

Reggie bush will be the most dynamic exciting player on our offense, he will be our weapon x.
We will have a top 3 defense, henne will vastly improve having bush who can take a dump off, or check own and make a 7-15 yd gain with it every time. Our redone will drastically improve with bush back there because no linebacker will beat him to the sticks outside. I see 10-6 , I really do, to me it all comes down to the coaching on offense, is Tony going to drop his nuts and let daboll go for it and open it up or are we going to play tight and nervous and kick a bunch of field goals.

I say 10-6, maybe 11-5
I think expectations were too high, way too early for Henne. I believe Pennington would’ve started the last 2 years if he never got hurt. As a result, Henne was thrown to the wolves. He performed well the first year he played. A lot of that early success was a result of having a great running game,solid line, and a deep threat. He had none of those working for him last year. I see improvement in all those areas this year.
I don’t think the Jets improved this offseason. In fact, they have regressed and I think we made up ground on the Pats also.
Our defense has the potential to be #1 if we can create turnovers and have a running game that keeps them off the field.
Although
I would have rather made different choices than the FO made…The Dolphins will have to play the cards they are dealt ( or dealt themselves…depending on point of view ) I believe the “core” team has been established. Maybe another player or two might come…but, basically this is what we have. Now…It’s time to just make the most of the situation we are in. The cream will rise to the top. Whomever that is doesn’t concern me as much as just playing the best players we have in the fold.

My Prediction
Is 10-6…Even a mediocre QB can thrive in an offense with our healthy O-line, speed in the backfield, a WR that can stretch the field ( yeah, Clyde will make the team )…Our last years stars…The Beast…Hartline…and the best slot reciever in the league ( he is the Besst )…Our Defense will have to prove all the hype is true. The greatest challenge to this defense is to stop Brady. If they can do that…or just keep him in check…Our offensive weapons will have more chances. Offense gets headlines…Defense wins Championships.

Interceptions
Was the demise of our season last year. Henne threw too many…and our defense didn’t accrue enough. If Henne threw five less…and our defense Intercepted five more…the tables would be turned. So…Is it possible that the defense will actually improve on the takeaways ? Is it possible…with a healthy O-line…and newly aquired offensive weapons…that Henne or Moore will cut down the Interceptions by five ?

Although, Ireland MAY survive IF they are around .500 and the team seems to have underperformed. However, Sparano doesn’t. Anything less than 9-7 WITH a playoff birth, and I believe Sparano is gone. 9-7 without making the playoffs and I say its 50-50 Sparano is gone.

No way! 8-8 would be a complete disaster and i completely disagree!
We do have a tough division, however our defense alone may win 8 games.
Our defense will dominate most games. We are deep, talented and have THEE premeire defensive guru at the helm. Unless Henne takes 2 steps backward, I see a 10 win season.
We will surprise quite a few people with our success.
The J-E-S-T will surprise many people too——they will be 8-8 at best. Our D and offense are both better on paper and will be so on the field as well.

Wildcat
Great article, but how can you say the wildcat will be absent this year? The Dolphins drafted Charles Clay who was a wildcat QB in Tulsa, Daniel Thomas who anchored as the wildcat QB and Pouncey was a wildcat specialist on the o-line. Plus, Daboll ran the wildcat in Cleveland. Brandon Marshall has a decent arm and I can imagine Bush will be well utilized on the wildcat too. As much as I hated the wildcat last year and how much of a momentum killer it was, it’s not going away any time soon. All the offseason moves the Phins have done scream “wildcat”. I hate it as much as the rest of you guys, but I’m just reading between the lines here.

The Phins record will depend on three things that no one can predict right now.
1) The Play Of The QB: The Phins started 3 different QB’s in ‘10. That can’t happen this year. No team can be successful starting that many QB’s. I think whoever gets the starting QB job (I think it will be Moore) needs to be consistent above everything else. If the Phins starting QB can be in the 85+ passer rating range for the entire season, they could make the playoffs.
2) The Defense Needs To Create A Lot Of Turnovers: The Phins Defense is the strength of the team (nothing like stating the obvious, huh). The Offense is the weakness. The Defense needs to create TO’s to give the Offense short fields to work with. One of the hardest things to do in the NFL is to have a long drive resulting in TD’s. Great defenses give their offenses short fields. The Phins Defense needs to be Great for them to make the playoffs.
3) Stay Healthy: Unless you have a great QB, the health of your team is of the utmost importance. The Phins don’t have that great QB so to have a chance at the playoffs, they need to stay healthy. Look at the Chicago Bears last year. They weren’t a great team with a great QB, but they made it to the NFC Championship Game because at the time they hadn’t lost one player to IR. In ’08, the Phins had very limited injuries and they won the division. If the Phins stay healthy this year, they could make the playoffs.

Yeah, i agree that safty is biggest wild card. I think Reshad Jones in a year or 2 when Bell retires or moves on. I think Jimmy Wilson will eventually take the free safety spot maybe even near the end of the season this year but more likely next year. But if it was anything like last year we will see most of our safetys on the field and see what they can do.

although we have improved in many areas we have 2 big unknowns….will Henne improve….how good is our New Offensive Coordinator AKA Brian D….much to prove….I support Henne…I have been critical of him….just wish we brought in Better competition for him!!

My biggest concern is Coach Sparano. His comment about Favre was ridiculous. For a guy on the heat seat, he should be praising Henne and telling him that he is his QB. This season depends upon Henne’s performance and the most important thing that both Sparano and Ireland can do is to give the kid confidence. Bob Griese said that his first 3 to 4 seasons that he played poorly. He got a tremendous confidence boost when Shula told him that no matter what he was his starting QB.

As well as we did, last year "on the road" with the champs the Bears, Lions, Viks, & poor GB Packers they won it all.
Well this will be our walk off home run, Err football dominattion on the road will continue, sprinkle in the season opener win. (JT is back) with all kinds of presure up the middle, the Pets fold like a “house of cards”. Sports has showed us, (one thing & one thing only) is that the Miami Dolphins R the “only undefeated team in the HISTORY” of the NFL!
