UPDATE: If the San Francisco 49ers are so desperate to get rid of Taylor Mays, then why should any other team be in a hurry to pick up their trash? Matt Bowen of the National Football Post, who played with the Rams, Packers, Redskins, and Bills, says that Mays' athletic gifts should make him an enticing project.
Bowen says that Mays brings value right away in the kicking game. "With Mays, you should get a player on special teams that shows up on tape every Sunday," he writes. "I would put him as a 'L5' or 'R5' (spots right next to the kicker) on my coverage team and try him out at the 'gunner' position as well on punt."
On defense, Bowen says Mays needs a lot of work, but there's too much potential there to resist. "With the ability to run at an elite top end speed (at that size), this is a project I would like as a coach," he writes. "Work his technique, get him in the film room for days and teach him how to study NFL offensive tendencies, route schemes, etc."
Bowen says teams may want to wait until the 49ers just release Mays. "But trade or not, I would still want a shot to coach this guy up," he says. "Too much speed and size to not test him out in my secondary."
If the Dolphins can work out a trade, it may make sense. He's a physical specimen. A freak. Imagine what Mike Nolan could do with this kid? Zone blitzes? This kid, IMO is just as athletic as his former teammate, Patrick Willis.
