Trade for Taylor Mays now!
Go get taylor mays right now. 49ers have him on the block and he is a physical ball hawking specimen. Not alot needs to be said besides go get Mays. Could be the biggest steal of the offseason he wont cost much. We have this great pass rush and mistakes will be made and we need a guy like Mays to run around and capitalize at safety. Reshad Jones is a very comparable player to Mays but not as athletic.

He's also a 2nd year player that is being shopped by the team that drafted him
If the 49ers are giving up on him that quick, that’s a major red flag.

Take a good look at his scouting report, mainly his coverage ability, and get back to me on this.

Yes,
he’s got to be great at Spec teams, especially if he gets coached up. So big, strong, fast, and tenacious, it’s just too bad he makes so many mistakes in coverage. Great for STs, a project for starting Safety.

I'll take Jones over Mays on this roster
Reshad Jones showed great potential last season IMO. I, honestly, believe he will be the starter eventually this yr. Both Clem and Reshad are young guys and will only get better. I just ask why mess with the chemistry this secondary already has by bringing in Mays

And just think…should Clemons and Reshad really turn out to be the stud that they appear to be, and having Vonte and S. Smith at the corners w/Nolan Carrol in there…then this secondary can be ELITE. And all five of those guys are all very young. And our front 7 is already STACKED!!! Very excited….Mike Nolan is gonna have us FEARED through-out the league.

I remember when we were talking about drafting him...
Its a bit ODD that the 49’ers sent a “memo” to essentially every team in the NFL (via Adam Scheffter) stating that Mays is on the “block.” That said, if he’s healthy and not a trouble-maker or whatever, then hey, the FO should take a good, long look at the kid and see if he’s worth grabbing.

And who knows he’s very athletic maybe he can be thought to rush the passer. He ran a 4.43 at he combine. JT and Cam can give him a few pointers. So can Cox.

he would be a awesome SS.
need to start looking for a replacement for bell. with some coaching he could be the heir to bell. 6’3 230 i see him being a punishing SS. big and strong enuff to be a xtra LB, and fast enuff to be a xtra FS or CB. i wouldnt give up the farm, but if the price is reasonable its worth the risk. IMO.
Athletically speaking he would be worth a 5th rd. pick
there is a reason SF is basically giving up on him

I posted this as a FanShot but it seems like there's some discussion going on here too...
UPDATE: If the San Francisco 49ers are so desperate to get rid of Taylor Mays, then why should any other team be in a hurry to pick up their trash? Matt Bowen of the National Football Post, who played with the Rams, Packers, Redskins, and Bills, says that Mays’ athletic gifts should make him an enticing project.
Bowen says that Mays brings value right away in the kicking game. “With Mays, you should get a player on special teams that shows up on tape every Sunday,” he writes. “I would put him as a ‘L5’ or ‘R5’ (spots right next to the kicker) on my coverage team and try him out at the ‘gunner’ position as well on punt.”
On defense, Bowen says Mays needs a lot of work, but there’s too much potential there to resist. “With the ability to run at an elite top end speed (at that size), this is a project I would like as a coach,” he writes. “Work his technique, get him in the film room for days and teach him how to study NFL offensive tendencies, route schemes, etc.”
Bowen says teams may want to wait until the 49ers just release Mays. “But trade or not, I would still want a shot to coach this guy up,” he says. “Too much speed and size to not test him out in my secondary.”
I'm a BIG fan of bringing him in as a project.
I want to see Mike Nolan turn him into a linebacker and inject him into some zone blitz schemes in the meantime.
by DolfanVince86 on Aug 5, 2011 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions
It takes more than speed and weight to being a great OLB.
I know on Madden people love speed with OLBs because they get to the QB better than most, but what does Mays have that suggests he could learn the OLB position, the rush moves to go with it, etc.? Again, if physical talent alone was the best indicator, Vernon Gholston wouldn’t suck so bad. Sadly, I’d say Gholston at least has more of a mental grasp on OLB than Mays too…
- Attempting to debate with a person who has abandoned reason is like giving medicine to the dead.
- Defeat isn't bitter if you don't swallow it.
I was just thinking that same thing...
It’d be a VERY interesting project…..especially trying him @OLB. Or keepin’ him @ safety, but only if he’s coming real cheap, or is cut then signed.

OLB is very intriguing...
He’s almost got the size for it. Maybe another 10 pounds. He could be an unbelievable OLB. I don’t think he’d have the same problems in coverage if he’s covering tight ends and runningbacks either.
by DolfanVince86 on Aug 5, 2011 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm with ya on this Vince...
maybe throw on the extra 10lbs or so, and YES: covering TE’s and RB’s would be much easier on him than the WR’s he was used to dealing with. Plus, as a LB, he already knows how to cover (well, to a degree—-been reading a ton of comments about his coverage problems) since he’s a DB. So add that to what I think would be a sick ability to rush the passer (due to this guys speed and freakish athleticism) and you got a LB who can cover and rush the passer. Very interesting and intriguing to say the least.

On a serious note. Woodson is coaching in Oakland. An Woodson seemed pretty high on Mayes. I think Mayes is a LB. IMO. Whether it be inside or out. Nolan could probably find a place for him.
