A Phinsider Look at Training Camp (Day 5)
The field was hot, the weather was dry, and the players were rested and ready to go. After a very embarrassing practice coming from the fans at Sun Life Stadium, it seemed as if the players, especially Henne, were ready to prove a point to Dolfans around the country, and they did just that. The offense played with the swagger and the energy that we all have been waiting for since the start of camp, and one player in particular rose from the rest which ended up in cheers from the 200+ fans in Davie, Florida. Let's take a look at how camp went on Aug, 3rd.
FADE AND SLANT ROUTES:
The offense was placed on the 15 yard line against a 7 man defense, and wideouts were to only run slant routes and fades.
QUARTERBACKS:
Chad Henne: Henne went 5/7 on this drill with 3 TD’s. He pump faked and threw pin point passes to Julius Pruitt and Davone Bess. So far so good for Henne.
Tom Brandstater: TB didn’t see much playing time during this drill as he only threw two passes, both were completed, one resulting in a TD to Anthony Fasano.
Pat Devlin:On Monday night Devlin played like an undrafted free agent, but it looked like the resting day helped him out, but only slightly. During the drill, Devlin threw 2 TD’s but unfortunately he had 2 interceptions and 3 incomplete passes.
7 on 7:
Last time up, Henne had problems with the 7 on 7 by constantly throwing check downs and int’s. Fortunately "Check down Chad" was not in attendance today.
QUARTERBACKS:
Chad Henne: Henne started out the drill throwing a 20-yard strike to Brandon Marshall down the middle of the field, and later on threw a 15-yard TD to Davone Bess on a slant route. He did however throw a pick in double coverage and had two incomplete passes.
Tom Brandstater: Excelling in this drill before, Brandstater looked to continue on his success during camp. Unfortunately for TB, he completed one pass on a checkdown to Nic Grigsby and had 4 incomplete passes.
Pat Devlin: Devlin didn’t snap many balls during 7 on 7’s throwing only 3 passes, completing 2 of 3.
WIDE RECEIVERS:
Brandon Marshall: Marshalll received a nice little 20-yard pass from Henne on a post-in. Fans applauded for about 25 seconds which was a great site to see.
Davone Bess: Davone continued his success during camp catching another TD from Henne on a slant route.
Julius Pruitt: Caught 1 pass during this drill coming from Pat Devlin.
SAFETIES:
Reshad Jones: Jones broke-up a sure TD to Davone Bess in the endzone along with a dropped pick.
Nate Ness: Also had a dropped pick. Punishment was 20 pushups on the hot grass.
11 on 11:
This was the most anticipating moment of the day. Fans looked to see if Henne could come back from a Monday night practice which had "fans" booing for minutes.
QUARTERBACKS:
Chad Henne: I was scrolling down my twitter timeline and I noticed that Omar Kelly was not impressed with Henne during 11 on 11, I actually thought he greatly improved from previous practices. Henne went a solid 7/10 with two 30-yard+ passes, two 20-yard+ passes (one for a touchdown), and three 10-yard+ passes. No matter what O.K said, Henne improved on this drill and played better than his previous practices.
Tom Brandstater: T.B went 2/5 with a 40-yard bolt to Marlon Moore, which would have resulted in a TD.
Pat Devlin: Devlin had a good drill throwing 3/5 passes with one 10-yard pass and two 20-yard passes.
WIDE RECEIVERS:
Roberto Wallace: After a very good Monday Night Scrimmage, Wallace was only thrown at once and it was dropped.
Brooks Foster: Very nice 20-yard catch from Pat Devlin.
Brandon Marshall: Thrown at once during the drill and it was dropped once more.
Marlon Moore: Had two good-yardage receptions. One was a 40-yard pass from Tom Brandstater and the other was a 15-yard zipper from Tom Brandstater.
Brian Hartline: Hartline managed to catch 4/4 passes thrown at him during this drill, and finished it off with a touchdown from Chad Henne.
2-MINUTE DRILL:
The fastest yet most entertaining drill of the day was the 2-minute drill, only Chad Henne and Tom Brandstater participated. Let’s see how they did.
QUARTERBACKS:
Chad Henne: Henne’s first two plays were incompletions (crowd was irritated, but not for long.) He bounced back with a 15-yard pass to Brian Hartline, who tip toed out of bounds. Following play was an incompletion. Once again, Henne bounced back nicely with one 20-yard pass to Hartline followed by an 8-yard pass to Davone Bess who stepped out of bounds. The next play had the crowd in uproar. Henne soared the ball deep down the left sideline, it looked as if Vontae Davis was going to come up with the pick until Edmund Gates leaped in the air like a frog trying to catch a fly, mossed Davis, and ran it home for a 50 yard TD.
Tom Brandstater: T.B followed up Henne and looked to have the same result, unfortunately it was the opposite. Brandstater was sacked the first play by Jared Odrick,, followed by an incompletion and deflection. However, it seemed as if T.B wasn’t flustered and went for back-to-back 15-yard gainers. However, the last play resulted in an interception from Reshad Jones, which marked the end of a hot Wednesday practice.
SURPRISE OF THE DAY:
Brian Hartline: Hartline had the greatest practice so far in training camp. He totaled 6 catches for 136 yards and 2 TD’s. Brian received quite a nice ovation from the fans as he walked from the field onto the sidelines for autographs.
NOTABLE MENTIONS:
Reshad Jones: Picked off Tom Brandstater on a deflection from Jimmy Wilson to finish practice.
O-Line: Did a very nice job of protecting the QB by giving him enough time to make accurate throws.
Edmund "Clyde" Gates: Play of the game goes to Gates for his miraculous leap to beat Vonate to the ball and for having enough balance to still run it into the end zone.
P.S: Due to the fact that the players practiced on the farthest field from the stands, I was not able to get very detailed video, which is the reason why no video was posted today, and I apologize for that. But enjoy.

Great. Looks like Henne really improved.

Henne looked good in practice? Big deal! Kyle Orton would've played better!
In fact, he could throw himself a pass and out jump Vontae and take it in for the TD. Dude is that good! I know because all the great Dolphin reporters and our most knowledgeable fans know it to be true.

I really don’t like henne but it nice to hear he improved. Hope he can lead us to the playoffs

Dude thank you so much for your posts
they are very detailed and help us fin fans that live in other parts of the U.S. Rec’d.
Couple questions:
Did Chad’s arm look good and did he look confident out there?
Was the crowd impressed in what they saw or were they like the crowd a couple of days ago?
Thanks.

I'm a henne supporter so take what I say with a grain of salt
and I’m only saying this because I’m not 100% sure if I’m crazy on this point.
This is the 1st practice since the booing.
Henne responded pretty positively with a great practice.

I honestly think Henne will be a pretty good QB for a long time.
Last year teams really focused in on him once it was discovered that we had no running game and our interior line sucked. Add only 7 step drops with only 1 or 2 routes to throw to and its a surprise he had a decent completion %.
i think we see an improvement also
i compare last year’s offense to the 2009 defense. We won’t see as a big of jump like the defense but a lot of things look similar:
1) New coordinator
2) Focus draft on a particular side of ball
3) young players maturing (Defense: Soliai, Langford, Smith, Wake) (Offense predictions: Henne, Hartline, Bess)
4) Impact FA signing (Dansby, hopefully Bush)
5)More aggressive and creative (Blitzing on defense, more diverse and creative plays on offense)
I think this offense can jump from 21st ranked offense to around 13th, which was where Denver was ranked. If our defense can be in the top 5 and actually make turnovers and the offense cuts turnovers and plays effective in the red zone we can get 10-11 wins easily.

Is a single practice an indicator of anything? Preseason games don’t even dictate anything. The AFC-East is loaded this year…and I ain’t talkin about Buffalo and Miami.
Your right the Jets are loaded
they are loaded with old over the hill over rated players with big mouths and very small amounts of class.
Sparono own big mouth Rex. Hope we good enough to beat new england this season but it a good way to see where we at as a team

Jwmann2, you must be talking about the Pats? Yes they are always a gate keeper.
I think the Bills have a decent shot at finishing 3rd but I would still put money on the Jets for that if I were a betting man.
Thanks for this post
It is highly informative and unbiased. Living in a galaxy far far away it is nice to see how the practices are going from someone in the stands, greatly appreciate it.
Very good post, and thanks for keeping us all in the loop.
Now, if Henne can consistently perform as you reported we might be able to put this whole QB situation to bed. Also, really glad to hear that our former Buckeye, Hartline, is looking good.
What about our RB’s ? No mention of them. Also wasn’t today that all the FA’s could begin practicing. Any info on JT, Bennett, or Bush ???

I really think this could be a breakout year for a player I supported from day one, but alot of others said wasn't fast enough or big enough
Yes, I’m talking about hartline. With a new OC and Chad hopefully getting better, I think the young man puts up 60 plus catches with 6+ tuchdowns
Fire Dan Henning and Tony Sparono NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
J-E-T-S JETS SUCK SUCK SUCK
BM and BESS are best
Henne did okay last year until Hartline went out
I dont really think he can have a breakout year,if he wasnt injured I really do think our offensive production would have been on par with about 400 more yards tacked on.
Hartline has been solid since the year he was drafted. I really dont understand all the criticism for him. Sure hes not fast, but he was leading the team in receptions and chunk plays before he went down.
Its nice to see that he doesnt seem to be hindered from his injury, the only one not to drop a single pass in practice? Guy reminds me alot of Camarillo

Impressions:
1) Glad to see that Henne isn’t quite as awful as his detractors claim. I was one of the few people on this board advising against drafting a quarterback (though I also assumed we would get someone BESIDES Reggie Bush in free agency)
2) I’m really glad that Hartline realizes how replaceable he is. He sorta fell off last season, got into some bad behavior, and was basically upstaged by guys like Marlon Moore. WORK, HARTLINE, WORK.
3) Here’s to hoping that Gates is the real deal.
4) Reshad Jones got awful, awful reviews from training camp last year. Glad to see people aren’t going “no comment” when asked about his day.

draft bro
first 4 picks were on offense. Last year our only acquisition on defense was Dansby. We relied on the draft and growth of young players on the team already.
Sound eerily similar doesn’t it?

Yeah, and the scary part is that Odrick and Edds have barely touched the field.
Our defense should be sick!
Hartline wasnt upstaged,he led the team in receptions and clutch plays as well as tds
He went down and was placed on injured reserve. Really dont know who your talking about…
by dolphinfan4lyfe on Aug 4, 2011 1:34 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Except, I DO know what I'm talking about.
Hartline played 12 games to Marshall’s 14, a difference of only two games. Despite that difference Marshall had double the amount of receptions….and no, he never led the team in TDs considering he only had one on the entire season.
There were countless reports about Hartline coming into camp with an “attitude” because he felt his rookie season performance entitled him to one.
Get the facts first. Then post.

Most of the great team are build through the draft
by biggaandbadda on Aug 4, 2011 1:32 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
I would say ALL of the great teams build through drafting.
Look at NE, Pitt, NY Giants, GB. They all build through the draft and add 1 or 2 big names as needed. I think it comes down to economics. You can draft unproven talent (that has greater motivation) at a fraction of the cost of a big name vet. This is important with the salary cap because you can only afford so many veterans.
Once your draft picks become big names, they can be traded for a position of need or more draft picks to keep the process going.
main key is to be a good drafter
which I think Ireland can be.

It better to built a team when you got franchise qb instead of qb competition every season. That what stopping Miami from being a top 10 team

It took a long time for Pittsburgh to get there franchise QB but they still managed to get to a Super Bowl with Neil O'Donnell.
I superb defense and a solid running game can keep you competitive until the right guy comes along.
True
Baltimore did the same with Trent dilfer
by biggaandbadda on Aug 4, 2011 2:07 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
And Tampa with Brad Johnson was the last to do it.
But since then the names of the Super Bowl winning QB’s have been Manning, Brees, Brady, Rodgers, and Roethlisberger. Those are probably 5 of the top six or seven QB’s playing now with Rivers being the best QB that hasn’t played in a Super Bowl.
And the names of the losing QB’s in the last four years are Roethlisber, Manning, Warner, and Brady.
From what I been hearing gates might be the next mike Wallace/ desean Jackson. He could be a steal
by biggaandbadda on Aug 4, 2011 2:00 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
from what i hear
Gates may be a steal, wilson very well may end up being a steal, and even heard charles clay as someone who may end up being a steal, three mid to late round draft picks with that much potential all I can think is that this draft may turn out to have been stellar, props to Ireland!
I know Wilson was a steal he was suppose to be a 2nd rounder but he had off field issue
by biggaandbadda on Aug 4, 2011 2:09 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I hope so. With YAC guys like Hartline and Marshall we need a deep threat to allow them to catch the ball knowing the safety help is down the field.
I think we should still be a run oriented offense, but we need to run out of formations with a pass look.
We should run out of the shot gun with Reggie, get him in space in 3 and 4 wr set

Thank you for the non-Omar point of view....
It is really good to hear that Henne is looking better and taking shots downfield. He is not going to go 10/10 with 10 TDs, and we shouldn’t even expect that. Remember also that he is facing the #1 defense in the league out there(hopefully). We were #3 for most of the year last year and dropped to 6th in our last game against the Patriots. I don’t think I could be any more happy than I am now. How much more happy can we be that he threw 2 30+ yard passes and 2 20+ yard passes and 3 10+ passes out of 10?
I am also happy to see that Gates gave him a little bit of confidence by going up and getting the ball from Vontae. I hope more of our receivers decide to step up and make some plays for Chad. If he puts the ball where the receiver can make a play on the ball and the receiver doesn’t win that battle it is on the receiver, plain and simple.

AlejandroN ... Great Job On The Camp Reporting! I Know I Speak For Everyone On The Phinsider That Your Efforts Are Greatly Appreciated!!
I was hoping that you could do us a favor when observing and reporting on the practice sessions. Could you give us a sense at the practices if during the 7 on 7, the 11 on 11, and in the 2 minutes drills if it is the 1st team offense against the 1st team defense? I don’t see this being reported anywhere and I think it could add to our discussions. Is Henne, with the 1st team WR’s, going against the starting DB’s? Is the starting OL going against the starting DL?
I think these types of observations can help those of us not able to attend put some things in perspective. It is one thing to say that Hartline had a great catch from Henne on the sideline. But that same thing takes on more significance if Hartline caught that pass against Vontae Davis or Sean Smith as opposed to some UDFA.
Thanks again for your efforts and keep up the good work! Rec’d.

I get where you're coming from but isn't a great catch on the sideline a great catch on the sideline?
The act of catching is a skill in and of itself – getting open is a differenty – certainly no less valuable – skill.
I agree with your request though. I too would like to know if Charles Clay looked good if he was going against YBell or just because he was running by Mark Restelli. Very cool to read about Gates skying over Vontae and going the distance.
Moss helped open up the Minny attack because he literally turned every deep throw into a 50/50 ball. He didn’t just make Cullpepper good, he made Randall Cunningham, Brad Johnson (and even Jeff George look good too.
The ability to take the lid off the defence will make any QB/passingattack better. Hopefully Gates can provide that.

It's good to know if it was the first team D giving that stuff up...
Dan Marino (13) and Steve Nash (13) will go down in history as being the greatest passers to never win the last game of the season.
Don't tell me Miami has no O. We've got Colombo and Fasano and Sparano!
It was during Henne's 2 minute drill and henne's 11 on 11
which is good to see from the offense and from Henne

Yeah a great catch on the sideline is a great catch on the sideline. I am just curious about the context of that catch.
Was it a great catch because Hartline was going against Davis who had great coverage, Henne put the ball in the one spot where his WR could get to it, and Hartline made a great catch with a toe tap?
Now I know Alejandro won’t be able to say all of that on every play. But if we could get the situation at the beginning of the drills it can kind of put the evaluation of the plays in context. Say during 7 on 7, if it is 1st team offense against 1st team defense, then when Alejandro reports that Henne made a nice pass, we know it was against the best the defense had to offer. But that same pass doesn’t mean as much if it was completed against the scout team or a bunch of players that Alejandro doesn’t recognize.
Regardless if the camp reporting includes this stuff or not, Alejandro is doing all of us a great service.

Next write up I'll include against who the catches were made against
but both Hartline’s and Gate’s catches were against the fist team defense

I hear ya,
I hope it all clicks for Henne this year, I think Sparano is tied to him at this point and will live or die on his success, and the fans won’t tolerate the same ol Henne so they had better get a plan, lol

If this doesn't work I suspect the plan won't involve Henne or Sparano

this post just proves that our Savior, Tom Brandstater
is a truly caring guy. he didnt want to show up Henne too badly, so he settled for a couple good drives, and faked playing bad a bit.
we all know the Great Brandstater could complete any pass he wishes by himself and no receivers anyway.

The great Brandstater must hide his skills
His brilliance would blind us mere mortals. He does not even have to throw the ball, he simply wills the ball into his receiver’s hands.

It's getting pretty annoying how practice was held on the farhest field from the stands for a second day in a row
Who knows, maybe Sparano wants to stick it to fans. Hopefully next time I go, they’ll be close enough for video

Great post! I think these are the types of posts that mosul was talking about when he reminded us of the site policies. This is definitely front page worthy. Maybe ThePhinsider has found a new sideline reporter? Rec’d.
It actually was FP
