2011 Miami Dolphins Depth Chart Bubble Watch #1

With the Dolphins' fifth training camp practice starting later today, it's time to bring back a very popular post from the last couple of preseasons.  Over the past few years, Matty I had posted the "Depth Chart Bubble Watch" series, a quick look at what players may make it onto the final, 53-man roster.

In fact, why don't I let him explain how this works.  From his first Depth Chart Bubble Watch post last year:

"For those that are new to the site, let me quickly explain. It's a "March Madness-esque" look at the Dolphins roster. The idea behind it isn't so much to nail down and predict the depth chart at each position. Instead, it is to help put together a possible 53-man roster. It is more or less based on my opinions - taking into account practice reports, how the team is lining up by unit (first team, second team, etc...), and how they perform in preseason game action (once the preseason gets underway).

"It's important to note that this is not how I predict the roster will look once the preseason comes to a close.  Instead, it's simply a snapshot that examines how Miami's 53-man roster might look if the cuts were to be done at this very moment."

With that explanation, let's delve into the chart:

First 5 Off: Lydon Murtha, Frank Kearse, Phillip Livas, Ryan Baker, Mark Masterson
Next 5 Off: Tyrone Culver, Jeron Mastrud, Marlon Moore, Patrick Carter, Quinton Spears, Roberto Wallace

Some notes on this, keeping in mind that this is very preliminary for now:

  • I'm not at all comfortable with the offensive line. I fully expect this to change many, many times between now and Week 1.
  • I don't really see the Dolphins keeping six CBs, but I'm nt sure who will go.  I think the 5th spot comes down to Nate Ness and Benny Sapp.  Personally, I like Sapp, so that's why he is listed in that spot right now.
  • The wide receiver spots are wide open.  Other than Marshall, Hartline, and Bess, I think anyone could make the team.  I would imagine the Dolphins take five into Week 1, but six wouldn't surprise me.
  • I have Hartline listed as the number two wide out, simply to keep Bess in the slot.  I'm not sure if that's the way the Dolphins will actually list them, but Bess in the slot is the best use of his abilities.
  • Even though he was the 7th round pick, I think the team really likes Jimmy Wilson.  I see them trying to convert him to a safety, and barely making the roster.  If he slips to the practice squad, I wouldn't be shocked.
  • I have Kearse missing the roster, but I really like his size.  He's another guy I see the Dolphins putting on the practice squad, especially with the depth this team will have at the D-line.

and if done at this very moment wouldn’t it stand to reason that, as Burnett has yet to set foot on the field for us, he will not be given the starting role?

garne is missing in my mind to

about edds and burnett, it’s probably because right now edds is playing as the starter, but when regular season starts there is no doubt it will be Burnett who is the starter

by mavin12 on Aug 3, 2011 6:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think Burnett can practice until tomorrow...

…since he was a new contract (and the league year doesn’t start until tomorrow). As of tomorrow, he will be taking (all) first team reps, count on it. Edds will definitely see the field on Sundays, but he won’t be the “starter” at ILB (though, given how dynamic our D is, LBs will be rotating in and out a bunch, I’m sure).

Don't think Garner has been signed yet...... did he sign his tender?

As far as I know he is still a RFA. He isn’t listed on the roster on miamidolphins.com

He have been un blockable in camp, this defense going be exciting to watch

agree with every1 Burnett over Edds

Also, what did Pruitt do to pass Moore and Wallace since he was on the practice squad last year and they were both on the active roster last year? I think we keep 6 WRs and Moore and Wallace are the last 2, while Pruitt is cut or practice squaded again. Lex is also kept and Sheets or Grisby fights for the 4th spot if he is healthy. I think we keep 2 TEs and 9 O-linemen.

Devlin and Hillard

I also like Devlin as the 3rd string QB. I like Lex Hillard as the 3rd string running back. He is hard runner with alot of power.

Is Trusnik going to bea tout IAF?

The biggest issue I have with this depth chart is that there is a serious lack of Nate Garner. He’s miles ahead of both Chisolm and Feinga.

I’d love to get some information on Julius Pruitt. Mosul, why do you think he’ll beat both Marlon Moore and Roberto Wallace for a roster spot?

I’m sure we’re going to get some “cut Berger” comments, which I agree with. My only issue is i’m not exactly sure that we have someone who is clearly better than Berger. Incognito is probably a better center, but we need the depth. Maybe if we sign McKinnie?

How many runningbacks will we keep? Will it really only be four, including Polite? I’m not so sure that we should be letting Hilliard go without knowing what we have.

Otherwise, it was fun looking at an early depth chart! Thanks Mosul!

Oh, and i’d love to hear some inside-info on Nic Grigsby.

by DolfanVince86 on Aug 3, 2011 10:34 AM EDT reply actions

Note on Berger

I mean that Berger is probably a better lineman, at this point, than Ray Feinga and Garret Chisolm. I’m not insinuating that he’s better than Pouncey. Just talking from a depth standpoint.

by DolfanVince86 on Aug 3, 2011 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

The defense is basically set

I’d keep Culver and let Allen and Sapp battle to be the veteran leader of the corner backs. Also agree Burnett before Edds. Wailson should make the team filling in for Amaya. He’s an excellent ST player and can play both spots at safety. He also plays CB.

The offense is missing Hillard and Garner as sad before. Pruitt kind of surprised me, but as you said it’s wide open at WR. i think gates will be the 4th WR Wallace,Moore and Pruit will battle for the 5th spot if we don’t keep 6. I don’t think any can be put on the practice squad. I like Wallace because of his combination of size and speed.

where is he? Have I missed something? Has he been traded? He ’s a starting guard/tackle.

Also Devlin as 3rd stringer

coming out of TC so far has Brandstater as looking the best out of all 3.

between ness and sapp, we may just keep ness because he is younger and cheaper...

also, jimmy wilson, befor ehe was convicted of murder (charges dropped), he was actually projected as a 2nd round pick by most people

so, i actually think we have a huge steal, getting second-round talent in the 7th

Miami's Superstars: Brandon Marshall, Jake Long, Karlos Dansby, Cameron Wake, Vontae Davis (just wait), Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Mike Stanton, Gaby Sanchez, and Hanley Ramirez. :)

I'd definitely take Ness over Sapp.

And Wilson was never convicted of murder.

wilson 5'11 185, to small for SS.

not comfortable with the OL. burnett should start over edds. i think moore will beat out hartline.

by warpigs on Aug 3, 2011 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

WTF?

Hartline is one of the most underrated players in the NFL. Did you see how bad the Phins offense instantly became the moment he was injured for the rest of the year in the Browns game last year? This is going to be Hartline’s breakthrough year. Mark my words!

by Drumzan on Aug 3, 2011 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

But not to small to play FS

I’m also not comfortable with the O-line. I wish they pick a unit and stick with it. Moore might no even beat out Wallace or Pruitt. Hartline will start opposite Marshall unless Gates shines in preseason. And I still don’t see him taking Hartlines spot at the moment.
