Analysis - New Blitz Possibilities
After last week's game with my analysis of the problems with the offensive line, I decided to do an upbeat analysis of something that went well this time - Mike Nolan's defense. I watched a few of his blitzes and loved what he was doing with the schemes. It's trademark Mike Nolan, but he's able to add some new wrinkles with the addition of Kevin Burnett
The addition of Kevin Burnett has made a difference, freeing Nolan up to put pressure on the quarterback. In Friday's case, on an unsuspecting Cam Newton. Below I analyze...with a bit more diagrams and videos than I had last time. (I borrowed the field format from National Football Post's Matt Bowen, who everyone should read if they're into X and Os.) (Sorry for the poor quality of the videos, trying to capture videos on my computer didn't go very well)
Blitz 1 - 3rd and 8, 8:26 in 1st :
Pre-Snap:
- The Dolphins are in a 2-4-5 Nickle Package in this play
- There's a lot of movement at the beginning of the play, they show McDaniel at NT, Starks at Left DE, Wake at Right DE, and JT to the right.
- Chris Clemons is showing blitz next to Wake with Dansby in a Zone look
- They then move JT, Dansby, and Wake to the left side (that's a scary trio right there...) with Y Bell lining up on the right side across from Jordan Gross
During the Play:
- Sean Smith, Vontae, Clemons show like they're dropping into a Cover 3 with the idea that Newton will think Burnett, Sapp and another LB are dropping to cover the underneath routes
- Starks draws the Panther's newly highest paid center, Ryan Kalil, out with a little jab step and then drops to cover the middle of the field
- Wake draws the double team by attacking the tackle and the guard, JT stunts around Wake, attacking Kalil
- This allows Dansby to get a free run (every defense's dream) while YB blows up DeAngelo Williams, but gets taken out of the blitz
- Obviously, Newton scrambles and having Vontae play that side of the field pays off because he makes the tackle, keeping Newton short of the 1st down
Here's a diagram of the defense:
Blitz 2 - 3rd and 4, 8:31 in 2nd:
Pre-Snap:
- Dolphins in the Nickle package again, except with Merling replacing Starks this time
- Less movement on this play with Tony McDaniel at DT, JT with his hand on the ground on the weak side, and Merling as the strong side DE
- Wake is on the strong side, standing up - could be showing blitz or dropping, he ends up covering Shockey in man coverage
During the Play:
- The left guard gets caught on a Burnett/ JT stunt, JT originally attacks the Tackle but then reverses direction and cuts across the face of the guard (pretty good quickness for a 37 year old)
- YBell speed rushes the Right Tackle and pushes Newton out of the pocket
- Chris Clemons blitzes from the other side and takes the block from the RB and keeps Newton from moving to the side in the pocket
- McDaniel and Burnett push their guys to close the front of the pocket and Burnett/JT cleans the play up, tackling Newton and keeping him from going anywhere
- While I can't see the coverage really from what the TV replay shows, my favorite part of the play is that it looks like Dansby essentially drops to be the Free Safety in a Cover 1 scheme
Here's a diagram of this one:
Analysis:
What I found really interesting is that these plays might not have worked so well in last year's defense. So much has been made of Burnett's presence this year, rightfully so after he was all over the field on Friday. Just looking at these blitzes, in the first one - you could never trust Channing Crowder to cover Greg Olsen in coverage like Burnett did in that play. That leaves Dansby to blitz and flush Newton out of the pocket.
In the second blitz, Dansby is able to drop into zone coverage - something we know he's good at and Burnett makes the big tackle to keep Newton from slipping away. While I did like Crowder when he played, Burnett just made a great play that I'm not sure Channing makes.
Nolan blitzed at least one safety on both of those plays and I have no doubt that we'll see more of that. Looking at the diagrams of these plays, you can tell that Nolan didn't want Newton to get out of that pocket. I'm excited to see how many different combinations of blitzers he can come up with considering the talent of the guys in coverage. Especially with that trio of Dansby, Wake, and JT being able to blitz - that's scary to have coming from one side.
(Code for the Defense: SS = Sean Smith, VD = Vontae Davis, 30 = Chris Clemons, YB = Yeremiah Bell, 27 = Benny Sapp, 47 = Kevin Burnett, 58 = Karlos Dansby, 78 = Tony McDaniel, 94 = Randy Starks, 97 = Phillip Merling, 91 = Cam Wake, JT = Jason Taylor)

Awesome post rec'd.
This will start to get scary though if we do this against teams with good WRs like the Patriots. I don’t trust Sapp in 1 vs 1 coverage with no help. That’s why I think the Dolphins are being patient with Will Allen to see if he could be that 3rd lockdown CB.
I’m excited to see those blitzes, though.
I got S + What a Dog's Tail Does.
Bring back Pat White. He is the chosen one.
Sapp is a veryyy underrayed slot corner, he can hold his own 1 on 1 betweem the hash marks, he did all last yr

Thanks so much. Fun read.
"The first thing I do when I get out of bed and feel the jolt in my knees is think of Roy Winston. On the second step, my calcified Adam's apple starts bobbing, and I think of Carl Eller. A few more steps in the dark and it's Willie Lanier. By the time I get to the bathroom, I'm flashing back to Dick Butkus and Ray Nitschke. And when the light finally comes on, I just hope that somewhere in the darkness they're thinking of me, too" - Larry Csonka.

As an aside
This should be front paged. I am envious that I don’t have the know how to contribute in this way, but I think more quality fans will post here if they see real work at play analysis. Hopefully, this sparks discussion although it isn’t controvertial as it doesn’t involve anyone fans fight over, so I am not holding my breath.
I encourage people to rec this post!.

Great breakdown.
Very nice effort put into this. And just imagine that’s only like 2-3 plays of the arsenal that Nolan has to work with. The defense is gonna"taking a page out of fat Rex’s mouth" Scary!
Thanks everyone
For the kind words, I enjoy breaking down the tape and it’s nice to have people to read what I’m thinking about/ doing. I was going to do one of those for every preseason game (last week – O-Line, this week – Blitzes) and maybe for every regular season game, if the interest is there.
Does anyone have any thing they’d like to see broken down in the upcoming weeks? More detailed on D-line play, Dolphin’s coverages, Reggie Bush’s alignments? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks a lot guys.
Just don't do anything about Chad F-ing Henne until at least week 4!!!
Seriously though, I am interested in anything that you think is reasonable. Maybe the FS battle and how they are playing?

maybe you can break down a big play each week

Miss the misery.
Need a reason for a change.
Need a reason to explain.
So turn it on again.
Don't change your mind.
You're wasting light.

A simple yet fun way to go about it!

Not sure if you're still checking this post but,
I’d love to see one on how we are utilizing Reggie Bush and the alignments. Maybe sometime after the Bucs or our final preseason game would be a good time to write it up. This way you’ll have more than one game to work with.

Excellent post
Very thoughtful. Taught me to see stuff I was not getting. Solid work. I am really excited by the defense – solid personnel through and through, all good, many very good, some great. I just hope that Daboll comes up was a similarly creative and powerful offense.
excellent post but my one concern is
that you would “disrespect” Cam Wake by just giving him a regular number
I think you should have represented him as B (for beast)

The blitzes
The part I like about the pickup of Burnett is not only the fact that he can blitz, but he opens a new area we can effectively blitz from. Wake, Misi, and Taylor have all had their fair share of blitzing, but a lot of the blitzes have come from the outside or between the G and T. With Burnett and Dansby at ILB, I am hoping we can see some more blitzes attacking the space between the C and G, especially if Soliai continues to demand so much attention from the C.
For those that don’t believe this could make a big difference, I would just like to point out why the Giants line has been so effective in the past years. They have had great DEs like Strahan, Osi, and Tuck. The Giants have also done a phenomenal job of moving some of their DEs inside on passing downs and getting some rush from the DTs.
Being able to attack the middle of a line is a huge advantage for the defense because it is the most effective way to wreak havoc on the pocket. Unless you have a QB that is good at rolling out, it is a very effective way of forcing the QB to get the ball out of his hands quickly. It’s much harder to get a great pass off or sidestep the rush when the rush is coming straight in the QB’s face.
- Attempting to debate with a person who has abandoned reason is like giving medicine to the dead.
- Defeat isn't bitter if you don't swallow it.
I really think Nolan is going to have some awesome blitz packages this year.
But I don’t think this team will blitz every play and they might have too.
This team needs to find someone else to rush the passer in the base defense other than Wake. So far, I haven’t seen who that player is right now.

and this defense could be fun to watch this year. I’m really pumped about Burnett - could be one of the best defensive FA signings in the entire league this year. I loved the way he came off the block and tackled Newton on the 2nd video.
Nobody hurt a tackler like Zonk did.
