Where are all the Crowder haters?
Free agency is upon us. I've been refreshing ESPN, ThePhinsider, Google, NFL.com and a multitude of other media outlets for days waiting to hear news about signings and trades. I was thrilled when I heard about the Reggie Bush signing. It's been a blast watching this uniquely short free agency period. It's just like regular free agency, except without all the waiting.
But i'm confused. I'll admit that before the lockout I wasn't present on this site nearly as much. I still visited every day but I did not comment or write posts nearly as much as when I joined the site last year before the 2010 season. I joined immediately upon moving back down to my home town of West Palm Beach. Some of you may remember me as "vincemoss86".
One of the things that I have been involved in on this site is the ever-present Channing Crowder Debate. There are many members of ThePhinsider who dislike Crowder's big mouth and lack of on-field performance. Cutting or trading the former Florida Gator was always a suggestion from this group.
There is also a fairly strong group of Crowder supporters. I was one of them. We point to the obvious increase in defensive production when he is on the field. We point to his strong vocal leadership. And we also bring to light his abilities as a run-stuffing early down linebacker.
My question is this:
Since the cutting of Channing Crowder, where is the outcry of joy from the many self-proclaimed Channing Crowder haters?
When I heard of the Kevin Burnett signing, I was extremely happy. I did research and found that this is a young, athletic linebacker coming off his best season as a pro. He is excellent in coverage and can play both MLB and OLB in a 3-4. He is being brought in to replace Crowder at the MLB position next to Karlos Dansby.
I immediately checked ThePhinsider. I browsed through the FanShots and the FanPosts, looking for the debate on what this means for the Dolphins defense. What I found was surprising.
Absolutely nothing.
OFFL posted a great piece about his sadness in seeing Crowder go. I saw a little bit of conversation about the Burnett signing, but not much. Where were all the people waiting to dance on top of Crowder's jersey? Where were all the YouTube videos and pictures of Kevin Burnett? Where was the analysis?
What this says to me is that many Dolfans aren't really interested in the positive moves that are made by the current front office. We're not really interested in a young, exciting defender brought in to replace an underperforming linebacker.
I didn't think much of this issue until I read the comments in the FanShot pertaining to Brandon Marshall's recent diagnosis of BPD. phinnyhenny28 made a great comment:
How is this bigger news than signing Burnett.
Seriously.
I was excited about the Kevin Burnett signing. I'm sure that more than a few of my fellow Phinsiders were excited as well. So why is it, then that we are more concerned with whether or not Brandon Marshall's personality disorder is "borderline" or not? And yes, i'm aware that BPD is a serious and legitimate mental condition. So i'll stay away from commenting on some of the ignorant statements made by supposed fans of this talented player.
I'm done with what has turned into a rant. I apologize if any of my fellow fans have taken this post as a personal attack or if it has come across as overly critical. More than anything, I hope that this post sparks a good-natured discussion on Kevin Burnett. I had trouble finding information on him when I researched him. Maybe that is the reason for the lack of information on ThePhinsider?
Either way, i'm excited about the signing. I'm thrilled that the Dolphins seem to be making positive steps towards contending in what is arguably the toughest division in the NFL.
P.S.
I don't think we've seen the last of Channing Crowder in Miami. His release reminds me of the A.J. Hawk release. I look for the Dolphins to bring him back on a reduced salary in a reduced role. He could fit very well as a primary backup and could make a huge impact on first and second downs.

Crowder in Buffalo definitely doesn’t scare me.
Really, Crowder anywhere doesn’t scare me. The best place for him is probably still Miami. He has a role here and now they don’t have to rely on him to be the every down linebacker that he obviously isn’t.

It's not so much that I was looking for the Crowder haters to come out and celebrate
It’s more like if they wanted him gone so bad then where is the talk about his replacement? I actually liked Crowder and his role on the team and I was excited about Burnett. You’d think someone who was hoping he’d get cut would be a little more excited. Especially considering the type of player Burnett is.

The title of your post would make most think otherwise
Crowder served a role while he was a Dolphin and was a team leader. Didn’t perform on the field the way most people hoped he would, but still was a solid player overall.
Maybe the title of your piece should have been “Burnett replaces Crowder — my thoughts and analysis.”

I was also wondering where the Crowder haters were,
I was kind of expecting a celebration type thread, with A LOT of comments.
I like the Burnett signing, but we don’t know if he’s going to fit what we do here, he wouldn’t be the first FA that didn’t work out here, and we don’t know if Burnett was a one year wonder?
We’ll just have to wait and see.

I had mixed emotions on Crowder. I knew the players liked him, he was good in the locker room. But when push came to shove he was not the LB we needed. Btw, favorite Crowder moment was when he put his arms up and flew around after making a tackle against the Jets, I was so tensed up about that game all week but that made me chuckle.

I think most people hear ARE excited about kevin burnett
the problem is that everyone is so on-edge about the QB situation, that they seem to overlook that we now have one of the best LB cores in the league, Cameron Wake, Karlos Dansby, Kevin Burnett, Koa Misi, and don’t forget AJ Edds, who is unproven, but I think he is gonna be a stud
Miami's Superstars: Brandon Marshall, Jake Long, Karlos Dansby, Cameron Wake, Vontae Davis (just wait), Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Mike Stanton, Gaby Sanchez, and Hanley Ramirez. :)
Since the cutting of Channing Crowder, where is the outcry of joy from the many self-proclaimed Channing Crowder haters?
Well you must have missed my outcry there bud. I was THRILLED Crowder finally got cut because he’s not a playmaker OR tackler anymore. The guy makes no plays period. Extremely overrated and his run defense rep is resting on the laurels of the days where he made 100+ tackles. Nowadays, not so much.
I believe the Crowder cut/Kevin Burnett signing is the best move Ireland has made in Free Agency hands down.
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
Actually, I did.
Once again though, this wasn’t meant to be a bash against my fellow Dolfans. I didn’t scour the blog for Crowder Comments before writing this post. But I do spend a considerable amount of time browsing the post, and in my time did not see a great deal of chatter about this move.
I agree with you to a degree about Crowder. He definitely wasn’t worth the money he was set to make. I’m also very excited about the Burnett signing and I think he’ll do wonders for the defense.

I didn’t think much of this issue until I read the comments in the FanShot pertaining to Brandon Marshall’s recent diagnosis of BPD. phinnyhenny28 made a great comment:
How is this bigger news than signing Burnett.
I disagree. The Brandon Marshall BPD diagnosis is a HUGE deal because it’s a very serious injury, and could directly impact the performance of this team’s #1 playmaker on offense. I actually think the news has been disregarded more than it should be; it has the potential to really lower the performance output of Marshall depending on how much time he devotes to the issue or how much focus it takes him off football. If Marshall isn;t performing up to scruff, the offense may continue to sputter. The dude might have even stabbed himself (craziness).

I like your above comment, but the thing with Brandon I don't understand how this effects the team.
If Brandon has this he’s had it for a very long time. Probably since he was a teenager. This isn’t an “injury” so much as him finding out something about himself that he should have spotted years ago. In fact, knowing that he has this should help him tremendously. If he gets treatment he’ll only be better for us. It’s the same thing with Ricky Williams getting treatment for his Social Anxiety Disorder. They’re actually very similar mental health issues.
Dan Marino (13) and Steve Nash (13) will go down in history as being the greatest passers to never win the last game of the season.
Yes he's had this condition for a long time
But the unpredictability comes from whether knowing about his condition will distract him away from the game as he tries to “heal”. Then again the opposite may happen. It’s hard to say, but discovering his BPD could very well have an adverse outcome short term. That’s why it’s big news.
Best case scenario knowing his condition takes a weight off his shoulders and drives him to be an even better athlete on the field.
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
It's possible that it'll be a distraction
But I highly doubt it.
Dan Marino (13) and Steve Nash (13) will go down in history as being the greatest passers to never win the last game of the season.
I find it very possible
Learning about a life changing illness could completely distract somebody away from their profession. Learning about this may or may not be beneficial for Marshall in the short term. We’ll have to see.
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
Ah, but you're forgetting for many football players Football is a safe haven.
They play to get their minds of their troubles. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if more football players than just BM have mental disorders of one kind or another. Football is an escape for them. When he gets into the game he’s not going to be thinking “Gee, my counselor said to do blah blah”…he going to be thinking about nothing but catching the football and getting past the defenders. Ricky Williams never suffered from SA on the field. It was off the field that he had all his problems, and the same has been true for BM, for the most part. Just knowing what his problem is, when he’s probably known all his life that something wasn’t quite right, isn’t going to change that, and if it does it’ll be an exception.
Dan Marino (13) and Steve Nash (13) will go down in history as being the greatest passers to never win the last game of the season.
Yeah, it could be
That’s the hope for sure. I think in the longer term, this is more apt to be the case. The shorter term is much more unpredictable. Marshall’s has a ton of issues surrounding him. We all know he was stabbed – possibly by himself. His wife was arrested and subsequently released. We also know he locked his wife in a closet for hours when things got heated that night. That’s pretty intense shit. The finding og his BPD also means he;s probably on some serious anti-psychotic medication, and who knows how that – and his marital issues – affect short term performance.
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
But that was all in the offseason, which as far as anyone not directly
involved in his life is concerned, is in the past. Since this is a functional disorder, I won’t be concerned until another "event’ occurs, and no one else should be either. He’s not ready for the loony-bin—yet.
Dan Marino (13) and Steve Nash (13) will go down in history as being the greatest passers to never win the last game of the season.
That comment makes no sense. I see no way that this does not in fact make him a better
person thus helping the team. You called this an injury. This is not an injury but something that he has most likely has his whole life. He has excelled with something that would mentally keep some people from success. How does treating this not add to his success or at least help him continue it on a mental level?

Sometimes finding out about something you don't know about
Can cause the overdrive pursuit of rectifiying an unknown problem thus distracting him from his career. For example, if he has to keep flying to Boston throughtout the season and deal with these heavy issues, that could take him away from the gym or from his teammates. Or if he delves deeper and tries to tackle heavier issues, he may not be focused as he should be on Sunday. The fact is, we dont know.
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
WTF does he have to fly to Boston for?
Miami doesn’t have a decent mental healthy hospital? Mental disorders aren’t like injuries that need a certain specialist to treat. There should be dozens of counselors within South Florida competent enough to treat him.
Dan Marino (13) and Steve Nash (13) will go down in history as being the greatest passers to never win the last game of the season.
Marshall was seeing the specialists
recommended by Ricky Williams, and they were located in Boston. Marshall may want to continue to see them. Or the Boston PHDS may send someone over to Miami during the season – who knows. We’ll have to see what happens.
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
I think he should work something out around Miami
I thought I read somewhere that Miami has pretty good mental health facilities, though I could have misremembered that.
Dan Marino (13) and Steve Nash (13) will go down in history as being the greatest passers to never win the last game of the season.

Probably if Marshall just hangs out with Ricky every day
His problems will go away. With all that Ricky has gone through and what he has learned to deal with his disorder, he’d have no problem treating BM with his. The treatment for all of these emotional disorders are pretty generic and differ more depending on what shrink you’re seeing than what the disorder actually is. Diet and meditation alone can kick them, depending on how serious the condition is.
Dan Marino (13) and Steve Nash (13) will go down in history as being the greatest passers to never win the last game of the season.
I know for sure he can get the help he needs right there in S. Florida.
There is a great medical community down there and he has the money to seek out the best of the best.

Seriously though, pot is fine if you’re normal and can handle it, just as long as you’re not overly motivated to pass any drug tests. But I’ve talked to a lot of people with mental health disorders who’ve gone to pot and other drugs to self medicate and they only aggravate their issues. Ricky will say that. He didn’t get his head straight until he quit pot and took up a vegetarian diet and a yogic lifestyle.
I’ve read that only 5% of people who ever try cocaine (and I am sure this extends to other drugs) get addicted, and of these the vast majority already suffer from either childhood abuse or some type of mental disorder.

my only hesitation on Burnett is the fact that he only really has one full season as a starter with major production.
but man those numbers from last year he had to be one of the top 2-3 players on the team that had the top Defense in the league in terms of yards allowed (271.6/gm)

Kevin Burnett...
our defense was elite last year, and we just upgraded
.
...yay

I am not a Crowder hater or a huge fan, but he was what he was, a soild MLB, nothing great nothing bad,but he did raise the level of play around when he was in the game.
If we brought him back for less, and a role player, I would not be pissed. Plus Ohio I would be happy for. I wish him well. He did his job, not great not bad, he was a hole clogger, if Burrnett can clog holes and make plays great.

If these athletes can accept that the NFL is a business first,
and learn to not take getting cut personally when they have to move their whole family, then I think that OFF4L can accept it also. I actually just had this vision of Sparano trying to talk Ireland out of cutting Crowder because the crazy fan in the end-zone with the coral hair would take it too hard lol.
Where are the Crowder haters? Right freakin here! LOL
Just kidding. Not so much a “hater”; more a realization we needed an upgrade at the position. Burnett is that upgrade. When you play in a division that runs to set up the play-action pass, you need a ILB that can play both the run and pass. We needed more flexibility at the LB position. Crowder’s limited role made it easier for opponents to read the defense.
P.S. – Can’t wait to see what Edds can do when fully recovered from his knee injury. And glad the Dolphins took the smart approach on Long (placed on PUP).

I'm loving our LB corp...
Like I mentioned in the post, I think Crowder will be back. That means that our LB corp will look like this:
OLB:
Cameron Wake
Koa Misi
Ike Alama- Francis
Quentin Moses
MLB:
Karlos Dansby
Kevin Burnett
A.J. Edds
Channing Crowder
Tim Dobbins (?)
That’s a pretty darned good group. I like the coverage flexibility with guys like Burnett and Edds. Then we have our run stuffers like Crowder and Francis. Good stuff.

I like the idea, but...
I don’t think Crowder will be back. Do you really think we’ll retain all 9 LBs on your list? I think we keep 8.
If I’m right, then Crowder is the odd man out. Why? Tim Dobbins signed a new contract just last year, and Crowder is not under contract.

Maybe i'm undervaluing Dobbins.
Who knows. I know the Fins were high on him when they acquired him in the draft-day trade with San Diego. And obviously they’re happy with him because they extended his contract. You might be right. Otherwise i’d say they definitely bring Crowder back though.

Well now they just added JT!
So, now we’re already 9 deep, even without Crowder. I honestly don’t know how many LBs they keep on the active roster this year. Maybe they trade Moses or IAF. Who knows. The FO is an enigma right now. LOL
