The Morning News

First, with the obvious portion.  Plaxico Burress signed with Jets for $3 million for one year.  It is fully guaranteed and likely means Braylon won't be a Jet.  They are targeting Todd Heap now.

Pouncey is starting at Center.  Snapping has been fine, but he was manhandled by Soliai.  Soliai is manhandling everyone today.  Very promising for Soliai.

Pouncey is doing good against LBs and pancaked AJ Edds.  It's his first day though let's not get too excited.

Charles Clay looks good in passing drills, but poor in run blocking. Surprised?  I'm not.

By estimation, Miami stills has around $5 million in cap space.

as of right now, I'm not scared of burress, he will be rusty, but I think as the season goes on he will continue to go back to his old ways

is charles clay lining up at TE or FB?

only 5 million? I thought we had much more than that

Miami's Superstars: Brandon Marshall, Jake Long, Karlos Dansby, Cameron Wake, Vontae Davis (just wait), Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Mike Stanton, Gaby Sanchez, and Hanley Ramirez. :)

I think he's been at FB, but I'm not exactly positive. Don't take my word for it.

I am personally hoping he can be a pass-catching TE for us

so we don’t have to go after zach miller/todd heap/any other TE out there

and we could potentially spend that money on orton

IF Miami wants to they can re-structure Soliai's contract to free up more cap space

Soliai is getting something like $11 million this year. If Miami inks him to a long-term deal he might take it at less money each year but for 3-4 years. IF Miami can free up another $1-2 million in cap space to add to our $5-6 millio left to spend, maybe we can add another weapon to our arsenal?

ill be happy if they sign Soliai to a long term deal....

If they can get Soliai into a long term deal for about 7M a year

that would free up about 5M a year, meaning we could add another big time FA like Miller (if he’s not already signed)

They might be working on one

The Dolphins didn’t want to give a big contract in February because they wanted to see in what condition he’d report to training camp. They have their answer now and it is a positive one.

A few tweets from TC.
Henne making some curious throws in this 7-on-7 exercise.
Pat Devlin just roped a 25-plus sideline pass to Marlon Moore, who beat Nate Ness and trip toed it in. Decent arm. Had some zip on that one
UDFA RB Nic Grigsby playing with inspiration during team drills. Running like he wants it.
Paul Soliai is throwing the Dolphins centers around, looking like a real franchise player.
This rookie TE Brett Brackett, who played WR at Penn State, can move. Not sure he can play, but he sure can threaten the seam.

Often

The Dolphins are installing a new offense as well. On the flip side, the offseason workouts consisted mostly of offensive players, so they’ve been practicing as a unit longer. Miami is missing a few OL on the line though, including Jake Long.

Remember the cap can be flexed by deferring money by about 3 mil and going over

by a mil. for up to 3 vets. That means if they structure everything correctly they could be at 11 mil under. Redo Soliai and they could be closer to 16-18 under depending on how his contract is structured.

Of course

There is still a lot of flexibility. I am not sure they will resign Soliai though unless they need the money. I think they may let him play out this season to have him prove he really has improved for longer than just 3/4 of the season.

They better restruture his contact

If Soliai has a solid season we’ll have to pay him out the as to keep him. Or maybe we franchise him again for 15 million. The best option would be to restructure him now. IMO.

Soliai already wants top dollar

The FRO felt he was asking too much back in February.

I know

They could’ve signed him to a long term deal earlier last season. Maybe 4 to 6 million a year. As the season went on the price got higher. If we don’t give him a new contract we’ll have to franchise him or lose him. Next season the franchise will cost us 15 million. It will be higher in 2013 by 120%. The smartest thing to do would be to give him 8-9 a year for the next 4 or 5 years.

We don't have to franchise him next year

But they may not have a problem seeing more games from him, then giving him the top dollar Soliai wants.

Your right we don't have to

But if we don’t sign him long term and he hits the open market we will probably lose him or over pay him.

We have a long time to resign him

We don’t need to rush it. Depending on what Miami plans to do for the remainder of free agency, the tag may not hinder us. If that is the case, Miami has a chance to evaluate how he performs in training camp and can resign him long term in the bye week. I’m not advocating Miami wait until next March, but I don’t necessarily think they need to rush the deal.

A few more tweets:
Chad Henne just hit Brandon Marshall on a simple slant during 11-on-11. Fans clap, excited about a completed pass.
C Shaun O’Hara will visit the Dolphins >> Interesting.
Great catch by Marlon Moore on bullet from Pat Devlin, which Moore initially bobbled. Devlin’s arm is better than I initially thought.
Roberto Wallace is rocking a really dope mohawk. Got to find out who his barber is. Mohawks are hard to cut. My son loves them.

bring in o'hara

thats good news cuz i really dont want to force pouncey against wilfork in week 1 on monday nite. and then the jets in week 6. like to bring in a veteran to help him progress. also like to bring in a stud LG. thats where the extra money needs to be spent on, beefing up the OL.

by warpigs on Jul 31, 2011 1:06 PM EDT reply actions

This might be a move due to the nature of this offseason

Today was Pouncey’s first practice and we only have a short time until the first preseason game. O’Hara’s not a long term option anyway, so we can play Pouncey at guard this season, and let him have the center position next year when he has more time to develop.
