Free agency is underway and i'm sure everyone here at ThePhinsider is eagerly anticipating some more exciting news. I was thrilled to hear of the Reggie Bush signing, since I believe that he is a perfect fit to fill the need at third-down-back. It would be great to see the rumors that he was told "this is your show" validated by a huge year, but i'd be happy to see him fill the same role that he left in New Orleans.
The reason that i'm writing this FanPost is because i'm not really hearing anything concrete about who the Dolphins may or may not be targeting. I've been scouring the internet for an article titled something like "The Dolphins next move", but the information is just not there. So who are the Dolphins going after next? What are our biggest needs?
Obviously, quarterback is a position of need. But, at this point, there aren't any real options besides Kyle Orton. And it looks like he might be staying in Denver after all. Beyond Kyle Orton, here are a few options:
(This list has been formulated with the understanding that we have now secured our third string quarterback in Matt Moore)
My favorite out of this bunch is Troy Smith. I think that he would bring more to the team than just a number two quarterback option. And he hasn't really gotten a fair shot as a number one quarterback. IMO he is the perfect fit to compete with Henne and bring versatility and flexibility to the team.
Other than the quarterback position, it isn't really clear what the Dolphins biggest needs are. Is it a pass rusher to line up opposite Cameron Wake? How about a veteran runningback to complement Daniel Thomas and provide mentorship? Maybe it's a safety to shore up the secondary? Or, perhaps it's an athletic tight end to provide a safety net for Henne/[Insert Number Two Quarterback]/Matt Moore.
Here are a few players that I would be happy to see end up a Dolphin:
- Osi Umenyiora [NOTE: Obviously, Osi is not a free agent. However, he is clearly unhappy in New York and I find the idea of converting him to OLB intriguing. It also would not be completely necessary if he is used primarily as a pass rusher in the Dolphins nickle packages or the various zone blitz schemes that Mike Nolan likes to run.]
- Zach Miller
- Ronnie Brown
- Ricky Williams
- Matt Roth
- Manny Lawson
- Stephen Tulloch
- Stewart Bradley
I'm not going to spend any time discussing these players in my FanPost. I'm more interested in hearing my fellow Phinsiders' opinions on who they think makes the most sense in this exciting period of free agency!
And hopefully, by the time we're all exhausted from speculation, we'll have some more big news...
