Off-season moves, positional battles and projected depth chart (updated w/ new cap)

This is a post about how I would like to see happen in FA up till Pre-Season or the start of the regular season. I will also cover a projected depth chart and key positional battles for starting and roster spots. I will start on Offense and go on to Defense. I will let you know now we are 30-40 million under cap and have plenty of space.

Star-divide

Quarter Back

Key Free Agent Pickups:

Pickup either Young, Bulger or Hasselback. I don't really care which one we get as long as they don't take up more than 2.5 million of cap space, and will not spend much time talking about which one is better.  I'd rather not make this yet another QB discussion. Failing any of those, make a play for Grossman. I would like to pick up an UDFA and two that have caught my eye are Mitch Mustain (see my fanshots for highlights) and Froman. The dolphins have also been connected with an UDFA from FAU.

Positional Battles:

Henne vs. FA Pickup. Henne should win this because of chemistry with players and O.

Projected Depth Chart

1) Chad Henne

2) FA Pickup

3) UDFA

PS: UDFA, which ever one we get.

Half Back

Key Free Agent Pickups:

Re-sign Brown to a three year deal worth 8 million. We need his versatility and nose for the end zone. Bring in either Darren Evans. Noel Devine, Derrick Locke, Mario Fannin, Armando Allen Jr., Brandon Saine, Gino Gordon, Damien Berry, Shaun Draughn, Jay Finley, Emmanuel Moody, or Shaun Draughn. This UDFA list is ordered in level of want. We should carry one UDFA HB to the PS.

Positional Battles:

Brown vs. Thomas: I think Brown has already won this one, but needs to prove it once again.

Hilliard vs. UDFA: Since Hilliard provides depth at both HB and FB and is a ST stud, he should win. Still is a possibility that he loses though.

Projected Depth Chart

1) Ronnie Brown

3) Daniel Thomas

3) Lex Hilliard

PS: UDFA HB (see above).

Full Back

Key Free Agent Pickup:

None

Positional Battles:

Lousaka Polite vs. Lex Hilliard - If Polite can't regain his 09 run blocking form, Hilliard wins this because of superior pass blocking and pass catching prowess.

Projected Depth Chart:

1) Lousaka Polite - regains 09 form and knocks heads.

Wide Receiver

Key Free agent Pickups:

Sign Santonio Holems to a 3 year, 15 million dollar contract that has a bunch of incentives. He could be that perfect #2 across from Marshall. Failing that, sign David Clowney to a two year deal worth 3-3.5 million dollars with 1.25 in guarantees. He is a veteran guy that can be a decent role player if you are looking for a deep threat. We need to ensure we have a deep threat in this shortened off season because Gates may not have time to develop.

Positional Battles:

Davone Bess vs. Brian Hartline: If we sign Holmes, we have a clash between two good WRs over the slot receiver position. Bess is a great target on third downs, but Hartline picked up more 1st downs. Bess has more reliable hands, while Hartline has a much better YPC. Whoever wins this will see more snaps, but we will see plenty of both no matter what. This battle may come down to what exact system we use.

David Clowney vs. Edmund Gates: Assuming Holmes goes elsewhere and we sign Clowney, this is a battle for who is the deep threat role player. Gates has the potential to win this, but a shortened offseason means he most likely won't have a chance to develop enough to beat Clowney.

Roberto Wallace vs. Marlon Moore: I think Moore wins this because he has proven to be the better WR thus far and is more polished of a prospect.

David Clowney vs. Roberto Wallace: If Clowney loses the speedster role battle, this coaching staff will have to make a decision. I would give Wallace this if he does something in PS and is impressive enough to keep. Clowney could become cam fodder if Wallace and Gates show up ready to throw down.

Projected Depth Chart:

1) Brandon Marshall

2) Santonio (sp?) Holmes / Brian Hartline

3) Brian Hartline / Davone Bess

4) Edmound Gates / David Clowney

5) Marlon Moore

6) Roberto Wallace

Vidal Hazelton, Terrence McCrae, Greg Ellingson, either of the UCF WRs or Armon Binns. Any two of these guys would be slpendid to have on the Practice Squad as they all have good speed and size.

Tight End

Key Free Agent PickUps:

Sign Owen Daniels to a 3 year, 16 million dollar deal. He deserves this money and there would be incentives based on games started (injury concerns). We should try to get him and might have to overpay a little. Failing that try to grab M. Lewis or Kevin Boss to a similar deal.

Positional Battles:

None.

Projected Depth Chart:

1) Owen Daniels

2) Anthony Fasano

3) Charles Clay

PS: Schuylar Oordt, Weslye Saunders, Stephen Skelton, or Charlie Gantt. Notes: People were complaining about taking Clay instead of Oordt, well we have the chance to have both. Saunders needs to be in shape after a foot injury kept him from running at the combine.

Left Tackle

Key Free Agent Pickups:

None

Positional Battles:

None

Projected Depth Chart:

1) Jake Long

2) Lyndon Murtha

PS: Jarriel King, or Daniel Kilgore

Left Guard

Key Free Agent Pick Ups:

Sign Justin Blalock to a five year deal worth 23 million dollars. He is a solid starting left gurad that has no weaknesses. He is a good puller though, and that is what we need.

Positional Battles:

Justin Blalock vs. Nate Garner: I think Blalock will win this one.

Projected Depth Chart:

1) Justin Blalock

2) Nate Garner

3) Richie Incognito

PS: Justin Boren, Daniel Kilgore, Demarcus Love, or Darius Morris. Boren is the only true OG out of this bunch, but that is fine.

Center

Key Free Agent Pickup

Sign Jake Kirkpatrick to a two year deal worth 1.6 million dollars with 800k in guarantees. This guy will play great in PS and will make us wonder why he wasn't drafted in the 3rd.

Poistional Battles

Joe Berger vs. Jake Kirkpatrick: I think KirkPatrick wins this one based on ability and we cut Berger.

Depth Chart:

1) Mike Pouncey

2) Richie Incognito

3) Jake KirkPatrick

PS: None

Right Guard

Key Free Agent Pickup

None

Positional Battles

John Jerry vs. Richie Incognito: I think Jerry is simply outmatched here and Incognito will win this battle. Although JJ could surprise all of us.

Projected Depth Chart

1) Richie Incognito

2) John Jerry

PS: Justin Boren, Daniel Kilgore, Demarcus Love, or Darius Morris. Boren is the only true OG out of this bunch, but that is fine.

Right Tackle

Key Free Agent Pickup

None

Positional Battles

None

Projected Depth Chart

1: Vernon Carey

2: Lyndon Murtha

PS: see Leftt tackle.

Offensive Roster spots: 26

Nose Tackle

Key Free Agent Pickup

Sign Antonio Johnson to a one year deal worth 1-1.2 million dollars. Try the Starks experiment again with a young guy.

Positional Battles

Antonio Johnson vs. Frank Kearse: I think Johnson will win this battle.

Projected Depth Chart

1. Paul Soliai

2. Antonio Johnson

PS: Frank Kearse

Defensive End

Key Free Agent Pickup

None

Positional Battles

Kendall Langford vs. Randy Starks vs. Jared Odrick: No matter who wins, we will see a bunch of all of them.

Projected Depth Chart:

Starters: Kendall Langford, and Randy Starks

Relievers / Role players: Jared Odrick and Phillip Merling. I would like to see Phillip Merling get reps as a pass rushing DT when we are in nickel or dime formations with four down lineman.

Bubble player: Robert Rose

Weak Outside Linebacker

Key Free Agent Pickup

Sign Vernon Gholston to a two year deal worth 2.5 million dollars. Sign Stephen Friday to the practice Squad.

Positional Battles:

None

Projected Depth Chart:

1) Cameron Wake

2) Vernon Gholston

PS: Steven Friday

Inside Linebacker

Key Free Agent Pickup

Trade: Dobbins and 4th rounder for Jordon Dizon, a cost cutting move. (Salary link) This will save the Dolphins over $2 million in cap space.

Positional Battles

Henderson vs. Austin Spitler: Spitler is a very promising raw prospect.

Projected Depth Chart

1) Karlos Dansby

2) Channing Crowder

3) A.J. Edds

4) Jordon Dizon

PS) Austin Spitler

Strong Outside Linebacker

Key Free Agent Pickup

None

Positional Battles

None

Projected Depth Chart

1) Koa Misi

2) Ikiaka Alama-Francis

PS: None

Cornerback

Key Free Agent Pickup

Resign Will Allen and Al Harris

Positional Battles

Vontae Davis vs. Sean Smith vs. Nolan Carrol: We will see a bettle for starters. Just from the mere fact we have three supremely talented corners.

Al Harris vs Will Allen: We will see a battle for the veteran conerback. We should only keep one.

Projected Depth Chart

Starters: Vontae Davis and Sean Smith

Nickelback: Nolan Carrol and Al Harris

Project: Nate Ness

Way To many Fa pickups

I think a few changes I would like to make would be to leave WR position alone, we are set there, but Wallace will be above Moore due to ST and potential. No on gholston, but we do need a wlb. I don’t like the blalock signing. And I really don’t want brown back, I’d rather see Thomas, Bradshaw, Hilliard, sheets.

by AnishB15 on Jul 16, 2011 7:17 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Blalock is the best LG out on the market. (Patroits franchise tagged Mankins)

Other than Garner, we have no one that can pull. This means if Garner goes down, our running game will go down the tubes.

Our WR corps is not set. We have no certainty that Gates will be able to build up his game to the NFL level without rookie camp, or OTAs. He has not met with our coaches to improve on his route running.

Gholston would be a backup and a cheap one at that. He also is young enough to where he might turn into a good pass rusher.

Brown does multiple things that Thomas can’t. Truck people, catch the ball, make plays in space, pass block, and hang onto the ball. Brown is much better than Thomas. Thomas is a developmental pick in my eyes because he has the potential to be very good, but is to raw at the moment.

With us using more multi-WR sets, we should see much more 5 wide sets. This means that we want the best 5th WR, not the one with the most potential. Actually, Wallace’s potential is what kept me from cutting him. Having 4 HBs and 6 WRs is hard to do, but with the talent at WR I had to do it.

Two words

Mike Nolan. It seems one of his specialties is getting the most out of underproductive players, look at what he did with Jason Allen for a few games. If he thinks he can bring out the best in Gholston I say go for it. As far as guards go Blalock is good but Davin Joseph is another attractive name, though who knows maybe the new CBA will hamper Mankins franchise tag void and we can take a run at him. just imagining the line as Long, Mankins, Incognito, Pouncey, Yanda brings a grin to my face. they are all relatively young and mean we could easily boast the best O-line next year with this lineup.

by AcolyteofRa on Jul 16, 2011 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

The Patriots putting the franchise tag on him is also symbolic.

It means “this is our guy and we aren’t letting him go.” Much less to a division rival.

David Joesph is a great RG. The difference is RGs need to be maulers and attack anyone that is in front of them. We have a great RG like that on the roster, his name is Incognito. A LG needs to be a great puller and must be able to lead block and block in space. Not all guys can do that.

dude this is not madden...

you can’t seriously expect us to sign Holmes, Bush, Daniels, a QB and a Lineman. Seriously…we are getting a RB, a QB…NO Wr’s…no Tight Ends….slight chance at a Guard like Joseph, and maybe some help at OLB opposite Wake. Thats it and even that is being generous. We have about 12-15 million in Cap Space from what I was told…a RB like Reggie/Bradshaw/Deangelo will take atleast 4-5. A starting QB like Orton will take 5-6 (if we were lucky enough to trade for him) and a guard like Joseph will be paid atleast 5-6. No room anywhere else to even get OLB help. thats why we can’t even think about Holmes or Daniels or Gholston. Our defense is good the way it is with some depth help, Misi is coming to his second year…and developed very nicely for playing a position for the first time in his college/pro career. Focus needs to be on Offense and it will be…no madden roster change up in there

We used to have 100 million in salaries, the cap space

in 09 was 120 million. Newer reports have actually cut the salary cap by about 10-15 million (from what has been reported in the past).

I am reading that this years cap will be around 120 with some possible wiggle

room.

Yeah, I was using some old numbers that had the cap at 130-140.

I think teams will REALLY start backloading contracts as most believe

with the tv contracts all coming up for renewal that the cap number will explode to 250 or more in the next several years. Its one of the big reason that the players are ok with taking a smaller cut of the overall pie.

They all come up in the next few years. I know that ESPN has

already offered about twice what they were paying before the NFL had even approached them. That tells me that the NFL will probably counter with something higher and in the end will maybe not get what they ask but will get more than twice the amount.

I like the possibility of Gholston

a 1 year with a team option for a second would be enough. With Nolan and Cox working on him they might just get the most out of him.

2 thumbs up for effort,and a Rec,

But the cap is going to be 120, and I dont see bring in a FA Running Back and bring back Ronnie plus Thomas. Vernon G wont go that cheap if he does it will be to stay where he is. I think there wont be a big hit made by us in the market, I think our owner is to cheap. I would love to see us max out, but doubt it. I still pray we dont end up with Vince Young.

Our owner is not cheap, we have made at least two huge signings / trades

the past two years.

Also, if the cap is going to be that low, sign Clowney and forget Holmes.

i like that

Clowney is actually a pretty decent player (personally, better than Hartline) and someone that can come right in and perform at a respectable level. I think we can expect at least one big signing and the rest will be for depth (particularly at QB and OLB). I do hope Brown comes back for another year at least. He will be a good teacher for Thomas, not to mention his presence will alleviate some pressure off the kid so he can work himself in to a starting role.

by Dolphins101 on Jul 20, 2011 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Clowney hasn't found a roster for a reason.

He’s a great role player, but shouldn’t see the amount of action Hartline does.

Hartline is a great #2 in that he is consistent in his stats. If he stayed healthy, he probably would have wound up with close to 900 yards on the season. He’s a good target that has the ability to attack every part of the D. YAC is a big part of his ability, he has averaged over 5 YAC per catch. Hartline is a very good WR, problem is, we have tw other WRs and due to there only being enough looks to go around, Hartline gets over looked, IMHO.

Hartline is definitely underrated

It’s a fact that goes undiscussed on this website because of how bad the Dolphins “need a burner”.

It’s the reason that a lot of people were arguing that Hartline wouldn’t even make a roster on a lot of NFL teams. That his ceiling is as a “number four receiver at best”.

When I think of Hartline, I keep thinking back to his “”http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_football_dolphins/2010/11/miami-dolphins-dan-henning-on-brian-hartlines-special-knack.html" target="new">special knack". I think he’s an excellent number two option, but his problem is being on a team which has a unique situation at wide receiver.

How many teams have a true “possession” receiver as their alpha receiver? While Brandon Marshall is IMO a top five player at his position, he is the only one who is just not going to stretch the field vertically. Yes, he can get over the top of defenses and use his size to come down with the deep ball, but it’s simply not his strength.

Hartline would fit perfectly onto teams like Atlanta, San Diego, Houston and Green Bay. Perhaps more than anywhere else, he could thrive in Chicago, where there are two straight-line burners he could line up next to.

i think that our WR stsble will be great when

Gates rotates in for beds and Hartline.

Also, you can tell that henning was conservative. When we were tied or ahead Hartline had a 12 ypc. When we were behind he had a 16 ypc over 23 catches. Hartline’s big plays mostly came when we were behind. Henning had absolutely no killer instinct.

Also, Gholston has never been a good starter.

He was ‘ok’ at OLB and was switched to DE in an attempt to make him useful. Then they saw the huge hole ion their DL and fixed that. If he expects a big check after all of that, he is certifiably insane.

In a situation like that, we only release Carey if we sign Yanda to a cheaper deal...

Carey played hurt almost all year and most of the time had to cover for the RG missing his assignment and endedup making Carey look bad. If he can come to camp in shape and healthy chances of us realising him wont be that high considering Balt will make a big play to resign Yanda

You want him to be a situational pass rusher when he just isnt.. at all

Ryan had to actually try him at DE because he can’t get to the QB. The guy is not a WOLB but maybe in a best case scenario he can be a decent run stuffing strong side OLB

Usually the backup WOLB is used as a situational pass rusher

So I assumed incorrectly i guess. We’ll if he beats out IAF for the backup SOLB job than thats fine with me. I just dont see how you can justify spending big money on RB, WR and TE when we dont have a pass rusher outside of Wake

I am hoping Misi develops as a pass rusher.

I think he will.

We haven’t used the backup WOLB as a situational pass rusher since wake was the backup. Moses and Anderson never got a lot of snaps on a consistent basis. The goal I had when doing this was try not to screw with the D too much and let the players get used to the system.

Oh, read that last part wrong.

We didn’t need a situational pass rusher in 2008 or 2010. I didn’t see us having a big need for one this year (although it would be nice).

We need a deep threat and Holmes is a great one. It is hard to pass on a guy with this much proven talent when you are looking for that type of player.

Our running game has consisted of a two back system and a bunch of teams do this so they are not too dependent on any one guy. We have one back, and that is an unproven.

Our LG spot is currently filled by Nate Garner. A completely unproven former backup. This spunds too much like Berger circa 2010. Our FO has a history of letting complete unknowns have no competition for the starting job (just on the OL: Incognito, Berger, JJ). This is a horrible practice and when a young guy is on the market for a position you haven’t been able to draft successfully; you get him.

Fasano is not a seam buster and Owen Daniels is. The TE position killed us last year because no TE could beat teams deep. These guys can.

We didn’t need a situational pass rusher in 2008 or 2010. I didn’t see us having a big need for one this year (although it would be nice). If we didn’t have Wake I would agree, but we have him. Also, bringing in a top WOLB this year might keep us from being able to draft a WOLB next year in the draft.

I'm not as worried about obtaining a situational pass rusher

as I am about depth at OLB.

In your scenario if Wake or Misi were to go down with injury, who would be the starter Gholston or Alama-Francis? Neither are very enticing options.

I think it leaves the DA with little but if somehow, someway they could prove that he lied to the

cops along the way then I think it becomes a problem. I think common sense tells you that he is not being honest. Normally I would slam a guy for not being honest with the cops but loves his wife then it at least makes sense to me. Now if some crazy B stabs me then all bets are off and I am moving on to the next one but that’s just me.

Nicely done bud

I tend to agree with the fact that you recommend a bit too many FA pick ups. Many look good but this may be more like a wish list than a depth chart projection. Alot of the players I do like however, I disagree with bringing Ronnie back and Santonio in. I say we save the money and don’t look at Gholston or Owen Daniels but I do think it would benefit to bring Blalock in at guard, we can use the upgrade for that position, no doubt.

Interesting read

Have to disagree with bringing back Ronnie and signing Bush/Bradshaw. All that would just defeat the purpose of having drafted Thomas in the second.

Agree that Marlon Moore beats out Wallace at WR. Moore just seems much further along. Along the lines of receiver I don’t think the FO goes for a TE signing. TE unit will be Fasano, Clay, and one of the many developmental guys we have or an UDFA.

Yanda is going to be highly sought after once Free Agency actually starts, but could be a huge upgrade so fingers crossed.

Like the Gholston suggestion. Though I doubt he ever develops any pass rushing skills he could basically become Ikiaka Alama-Francis version 2.0, in that a high draft pick just becomes a big run stuffer for us. I played around with the idea of picking up Aaron Maybin if he is cut. I think with some tweaks, Wake, and Nolan he could be a decent situational pass rusher. Nolan could put him at OLB, not MLB where the Bills had him, and Wake (another Penn State product) could be a good role model/mentor for him. If he comes cheap there is really no risk. Plus both Gholston and Maybin would piss of the Jest and the Bills which is great no matter what.

Finally for the DB position, I don’t think Harris wants to play any more, plus he is old. The FO went out of their way to renegotiate Will Allen’s contract so he is staying but I would hope that Carrol beats him out at the Nickel. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see some shifting of our safeties. It would be interesting to see both Clemons and Jones on the field at the same time. Both those guys can fulfill the FS or SS roles very wel and could be a nightmare for opposing QBs. Either Jimmy Wilson or some UDFA (there are some good UDFA safeties this year) may be able to challenge Culver for his roster spot despite his excellent special teams play.

For the love of God, play Pouncey at Guard!

We have no developmental guy and Clay

is a late round pick that may or may not be good enough to b a #2 receiving TE.

I picked Gholston because he would be cheap, and has some upside.

Will Allen might be a shell out of his former self and if that is true, Harris is a much better CB. Harris would not have came back midseason after a knee injury if he didn’t want to play, that was the perfect opportunity to call it quits, but he didn’t. Harris also should be better than last year because he was still hampered by that knee injury. Although he won’t be fully healed because of his age (33).

Some thoughts on the CB position

Benny Sapp is still under contract for 2011 ($1.9 mil). Since he wasn’t mentioned, I assume he is cut when Will Allen beats him out. I’m not sure this is a certainty since Will Allen hasn’t played much football in the last 2 years.

I don’t remember Nolan Carrol playing much Nickel CB last year, in everything I read and remember from last last season I see him described as a boundary corner (meaning he lines up on the outside, not the slot like a Nickel CB.)

The Nickel position requires a very specialized skill-set. Nickel CB must be very agile and fluid in coverage but must also be a sure-tackler. I don’t think boundary corner and nickel corner are always interchangeable.

There’s no question Carrol has the top end speed to play CB but does he have the agility to cover a guy like Wes Welker running through traffic across the middle of the field? I see Nolan more as a 3rd boundary corner, backing up Smith and Davis, than as our primary Nickel CB.

by Urthling on Jul 17, 2011 11:03 AM EDT reply actions

Sapp really does suck and Harris beat him out for the nickel guy when he was signed.

Harris will be even better this year (a year off an injury) and carrying Sapp would be too much of a burden as we would have to let go of Ness.

Carrol is a physical specimen and displays great speed and quickness. The biggest concern coming out of the draft is that he was too small to play the outside corner position. I think He can play all of the CB positions, though.

Santonio is going to demand a lot this year...

…that’s a tough pick up, and not sure if he even fits our need (but he’s a good football player, and I’m all about amassing talent — but I don’t think we’re going to go too hard after a receiver who will be getting pretty big offers from around the league).

The one glaring problem I have with your depth chart is the idea of bringing in Ahmad Bradshaw or Reggie (i’m assuming Reggie) Bush at somewhere between 25-30 million dollars. My problem is that you have them listed as number two on the depth chart, behind Ronnie Brown, making 8 million dollars. I’m not sure how much value players put on the correlation between salary and depth chart, but I have to imagine that Bradshaw wouldn’t be happy sitting behind Ronnie Brown in a situation like that.

Otherwise, you bring up a few interesting ideas concerning what is likely to happen in the next few months. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of the names you listed as possible FA acquisitions actually ending up in aqua & orange. Especially a guy like Blalock or Holmes. Also, I like the idea of Jake Kirkpatrick soundly beating Joe Berger in a battle for a roster spot. I could see it happening.

On the subject of Reggie Bush, i’d be thrilled to see him come to Miami. I’m of the opinion that he would open the game up for Chad Henne. I think he’s one of the few truly elite third down runningbacks in the NFL. But by definition that means he’s a role player. If we could sign him to a deal that would reflect his role, somehow stealing him from New Orleans by offering him a middle ground between what the Saints are offering and his 11 million or so that he’s due, I think it could be a reality.

Overall, a good read! Thanks Pot!

Well, since I learned of the new salary cap, I didn't have us picking up Bush.

But anyway.

Unless we go to a shotgun offense where almost all of our plays are taken from the shotgun; Bush won’t be the premiere back. Even then, he would have to be taken out for power running plays in short yardage situations. Slaton did a similar role in Houston.

The reason I don’t forsee us getting Bush (or Yanda) due to the lower salary cap is that we don’t have a good starter at LG or TE and we need a do-it-all back as our premiere back. I also think that bringing in a great puller that would let Incognito go back to being a great RG would help us more than bringing in Yanda. Yanda plays a more important position, but we have a solid starter at RT and the upgrades elsewhere would open up our running game much more effectively.

I also think that bringing in Holmes or Clowney would open up our offense more than bringing in Bush. In a shortened offseason, Gates most likely won’t make a huge impact ala Ginn in 07 with a full offseason. The reason is that it would help make the Ss and his CB back off their coverages because of their pure speed. Also, we have a RB that thrives when he is given space to operate in Brown. One of the failures of Henning was never using our backs correctly in the passing game. Even in 07, Brown was on track to have over 700 yards receiving with Lemon QBing the team. I think Daboll knows this and is one of the reasons he wants to go to a spread O.

I completely agree with your thoughts on Reggie Bush

IMO he’s the perfect piece to add to the backfield that Miami has created. Daniel Thomas will be the workhorse back. Lex Hilliard provides insurance and a veteran ball-carrier. Reggie Bush could be the change-of-pace back that Miami has been lacking. Kory Sheets could play the same role to Bush as Hilliard does to Thomas.

Of course, Miami might want to bring in a veteran ball-carrier like Bradshaw or Williams (Ricky or Deangelo) but I really don’t think it’s necessary. The Dolphins spent a second round pick on D. Thomas. Let’s see if he can prove his value.

rb's dont often produce as rookies...

look at last year with matthews and best…neither had that great of seasons…rb’s, althought its an easy transition, normally take atleast 2 years to produce…we need someone else aside from thomas…hell even Ingram will be sharing carries.

If there is any position that a player can have a break out year as a rookie its RB.

Sometimes LB but RB's can make an immediate impact.

Whether or not he produces

Thomas will get the carries. As long as he can stay healthy, he’s going to be the featured runningback in Miami’s rushing game. The Dolphins specifically targeted him. It would be a bad move by the front office to go out and spend big money on a guy like Deangelo Williams or Ahmad Bradshaw.

I think it’s more likely that Ricky Williams or Ronnie Brown returns than to go out and get a star runningback. It makes sense to bring in a guy like Reggie Bush or Darren Sproles to provide the change-of-pace that the Dolphins so desperately need.

Either way, Lex Hilliard is still an unproven commodity. If Thomas truly does struggle, he could see an increased workload. Beyond that, we also have guys like Kory Sheets and even Charles Clay. Versatility is the name of the game I guess….

to be honest...

if you remember the draft there was a run on running backs for 2 consecutive picks 4 spots before the dolphins picked, one being Mikel Leshoure, who I think is a better back then Thomas and I believe the Front Office would’ve drafted over Thomas had he been available 4 picks later

by tonyy on Jul 21, 2011 7:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I still think the Dolphins had picked their guy.

They might have gotten antsy because of the runningback run, but I don’t think they would have taken Mikel Leshoure. He’s a different type of back and i’m sure the Dolphins like Thomas’s abilities in the passing game, whether it’s catching out of the backfield or blocking.

Either way, i’m looking for Thomas to be the starting runningback for the Dolphins. Although Deangelo Williams would certainly be a plus…

First rec'd

Nice post. I’ve tried twice to comment, but somethings no working right so I’ll try to make this short and sweet.

I like your outlook on the offensive side of the ball. Ronnie is 1 of my favorite players, but I don’t think we’ll resign him. Both Bradshaw and Bush would be good pick ups. I prefer Bradshaw mainly because of Bush injury history. We still need at least 2 RB’s.

Blalock,Yanda and Kirkpatrick would be great. Blalock and Yanda would give use a top 5 O-line for years to come. Kirkpatrick would be solid depth at center. I also like T.Barnes.

I like our WR,but Holmes would be an upgrade, He’d give us the best WR corps in the NFL. His signing would also hurt the Jest.

Daniels resigned with the Texans in March, but Z.Miller would be good in that spot. Lewis and Boss were also good choices.

On defense I would’nt make to many changes. I do think we need more depth at NT. I like K.Jenkins if he’s healthy. He could mentor both Soliai and Kearse. If Soliai was to get injured Jenkins could man the spot.

I’d like to resign T.Mac, but we have depth at DE if Odrick is healthy and Merling steps his game up. He’s in a contract year so he might play hard for the money.

I’d resign Moses over picking up Gloston. Inside I don’t know anything about Dizon so I can’t comment on him, but I like UDFA’s M.Herzlich and M.Harvey.

No to Harris. I’d let Allen and Sapp battle for the veteran spot.

As much as I like our safeties I’d like to sign E.Weddle. He’s an upgrade and the addition would help phase out Bell. Either Jones or Clemons could take his spot.

i think the jets are going to re-sign Holmes and let Braylon Edwards go on into free agency

I think Jenkins would be too expensive and might want to have the starting role or at least

be in an open competition. Also, Johnson could instantly see snaps in the nickel package in pass situations as the 1 tech DT.

I don't think Jenkins will be expensive at all

He has a lot to prove. He has only played in 7 games the last 2 season. And last season he only lasted 1 game. He’s no spring chicken and he has to prove he can stay healthy. His contract would be full of incentives.

Dizon is a young ST ace with a lot of upside. He is fairly quick and mobile, but strong enough

to play in the 34. He also is, from what I’ve seen, a good tackler. He got replaced with a draft pick 2 years ago, but has come to be a standout on ST.

Sapp just sucks, he could only man the dime position, IMO and would be a liability in coverage if manned against a solid slot receiver. Harris was also a liability at times last season, but he was just coming off a leg injury and I don’t think he was fully healed. A healthier Harris would be much better competition than Sapp. Also, Harris was once a dominate corner and would be the best mentor for our young guys.

That would be smart, but Edwards wasn't bad

Do you think they’ll go after R.Moss or P.Burress.

No they have multiple FAs to retain and less money than we do to do so.

i see Plaxico possibly going there though...

taking Edwards spot. If it happens I’m not too worried about it, im thinking Sean Smith can match up well with him.

Well researched Pot! Even though there are a couple of minor

areas we disagree on…such as I believe Jones will beat out Clemons, and hopefully Knock some TE’s helmets 20’ in the air [major problem last season],but time well spent.
If all that came out of this was acquiring Blalock, I will be be allot more than comfortable and happy. Been gone and need some catching up to do. I think Tex wrote a couple of things that must contain errors that need my guidance.
