I heard on the radio this morning how the shortening of the free agent signing period is beneficial to the owners and it will cost the players money. I don't quite get the logic behind this.
Yes, there will be less time for players to shop themselves around to different teams, but there will also be less time for teams to compare different players, and a team in need may wind up making a quick offer that's higher than it would otherwise be.
In addition, the NFL is very serious about having all teams spending close to the salary cap every year, so any money that's not spent on free agents would go to other players, it wouldn't just disappear.
Am I missing anything?
