Charles Clay....Gem of the dolphins draft

I was wondering, who in the NFL, would be a good comparison to Charles Clay. I came up with one name...Dallas Clark. the measurables are almost identical:

Dallas Clark: 6'4 245, 4.67 in the 40 yard dash

Charles Clay: 6'3 250, 4.73 in the 40 yard dash

people like to say Clay is to small to play on the line, perhaps, but you cant put him on the end of the line for his blocking skills! how often do you see guys like Dallas Clark being asked to block a rush DE or LB? he just dosent do it. but what Clark does do extremly well is catch the ball for 10-15-20 yard plays. he maybe asked to cross the middle and get a little push on the LB, but then he scrapes off into the soft spot in the zone or turns up field and catches the ball between the LB and the Safety. This is how Clay needs to be used. I understand that Clay doesnt have Payton Manning tossing it to him, but Clay could be the dynamic TE miami hasnt had in years. he Wont be known for his blocking skills, but when he catches 15 yard touchdowns right up the middle. his blocking woes will be overlookled. this is all dependant on how miami uses Clay. picture a 4 reciever set like this:

Marshall---------Gates------------------------------ClayXXXXX----------------------Bess----------------------Hartline

This would be the type of offense that i think Clay could help the most.

he's got the speed to beat a LB and he has great hands.....what else do you want from a pass catching TE?

I'll be keeping my eye on this guy all season, I think he's going to be a big surprise and a viable threat in his rookie season.

what do you think?

i agree frosty. i also believe he will be a very big impact as a FB. blocking for thomas and catching the ball out of the backfield.

I really hope you're right...

I wasn’t crazy about this pick because as a late pick you look for someone with a DYNAMIC or SPECIAL ability. Clay doesn’t really show that, however his strength is he is very balanced.

I’m not putting too much attention into the Charles Clay project but I hope you’re right… If we get the next Dallas Clark that could do absolute wonders for a young QB and would be one of the best draft picks this front office ever made.

Very balanced...

Could not have said it better 72…..I think he will have a solid year….the numbers he puts up will probably not junp out at us….but I think the defenses will have to account for him and know where he is lined up at….with that it should take some attention from the WR’s..

fair enough

but that the end of the day it will come down to the performance of the QB.

This offense is NOT that bad, but we desperately need solid play from our QB

Nice observation...

… I too hope these later picks turn into viable positions respectively.
History has shown that a low percentage of late picks actually turn out.
I think Miami did a great job of getting late players with higher upside than usual.

Another option to use him in would be in a double tight-end set, where he could also be used to block for rookie Thomas….

i was hopeing they would draft dj williams, but clay is almost a carbon copy of williams. pound for pound they are almost the same, and thier styles are very simular.

by warpigs on Jun 30, 2011 12:51 PM EDT reply actions

i think

he will have a very solid firt year as our 2nd TE and by the end of the year will be a major weapon that can be moved around alot and eventually starting at TE with fasano the 2nd or whoever can block better with descent enough hands like haynos as out 2. CLAY will be a very good TE and very vesitiale playing h back fullback and TE and even lining out in reciever postion. hopefully we add bush and the mismatches will be plentiful. of course only add bush if we cant get williams or bradshaw as our other runner

by Chris Schlitz on Jun 30, 2011 1:40 PM EDT reply actions

dont believe haynos is with us anymore. i think they will keep shuler as our #2. clay will be our #3. thats what makes clay much more valuable. he can lineup on the line, in the backfield or outside.

by warpigs on Jun 30, 2011 2:08 PM EDT reply actions

I seriously think he will be used a bunch in a two back set, giving us multiple options out of the backfield

Sure we used several 2 te sets over these last few seasons, but I think that was more out of necessity than actual like for the formation.

This guy has phenominal hands, and as a power run team, one of the most used formations is the I. I think with our first round pick,we wont have to switch to max protect as often, freeing us to move Clay all over the field. Also,it allows us freedoms we just dont have with fasano.

The more I read and see of this kid,the happier I am with the pick up,which is more than I can say for most later round steals minus bess and wake. Overall ive run simulations on this program I got from school, and this guys value is actually most productive playing fullback with DT in at RB,

Is that 57% a real number? wow. He’s a 6th round rookie. Does he have the talent to eventually put up those numbers? yes. But in his rookie year? I don’t even think he will get the opportunity to do that. Is he going to have a 1000 yards and 10 TD’s in 3-4 years?

I'm a 29 percenter but you never know I guess.

Some of these guys just come out of nowhere in their rookie year. He could be that or a guy that takes a few to develop or just a guy who’s name we barely remember in 5 years.

You can't play every team the same way as different players present new problems!

It’s a “huge riddel” the NFL, unless you have the (best QB) the same top tallented WR as other teams in your division, confrence, division, & league!

It took Martin 7 years to break 30 catches,

and his 8th season was his best, 31 rec(2nd highest total, 34 is his best) for 450yds(career high) 14.5 ypr(career high) and 3 TDs(tied for career high).

I know why everybody is getting worked up about a 6th round TE/FB that couldn’t do as many reps on the bench as Bess, because the FO sold this pick like that, they want it to appear as if they got more at the top of the draft, but we got 2 in the the first 3 rounds, 3 in the first 4 so they want it to seem like we got more so they built up that pick from before they even took Clay.

Clay is a fair comparison to Martin, a weak athletic type TE project, contrary to what many are saying you can’t put TEs or FBs on the field that can’t perform at least a semblance of blocking, and make no mistakes about it, Clay CANNOT, he is weak and completely lacking in even the fundamentals of blocking, not to mention the fundamentals of route running.

I think he’s a really good 6th round project, but a weapon this year, that is a bit far fetched, he is not a super polished phenom from a small school (Bess), he’s a guy who put up interesting stats, nothing big, and got by on his physical talents, he is a player who needs a ton of coaching and conditioning to get up to NFL speed.

Having said all that, I would not be surprised to see this FO try to crowbar him into some playing time a la Pat White, they built him up quite a bit just like with White.

I think that the people that voted for that option

Are excited about his athleticism and versatility. Anthony Fasano may be the most traditional, in-line tight end in the NFL, but even he looked wide open at times this past season.

I think that Clay will see a ton of snaps and will be lining up everywhere from wide receiver to fullback. Yes, it will be difficult for him to put up those numbers, but I don’t think it’s impossible…

I think were wishing on a star, yes I know I'm Dave downer, but I hope Im wrong. I do like are last pick

in the draft, I honestly hope that guys plays with a big chip on his shoulder,we need a guy like that!!! A Rodney Harrison type guy, I will give up 15 to 30 yards agame in flags for a guy that scares the SHIT out of anyone that comes across the middle..i.e. Ronnie Lott, Steve Atwater type guy. It will only take a few games and a few flags, then they will be thinking all times where is this guy!!!

Clark vs Clay

this comparison is ridiculous… clay has accomplished NOTHING yet… Clark is one of the best pass catching TE’s in the league… If he is 50% of that I would be happy. I liked the Clay draft pick, but I doubt he is a game changer like Dallas Clark. also 4.67 vs 4.73 speed, is NOT a small difference ! Most of the inside LB’s run around 4.75 in the NFL or better – so CLARK’s 40 time is pretty important, and enough to give him a few steps on the LB’s…. CLAY – not so much….Last year we should have taken Hernandez like the Patriots did…

It really isn't that big of a difference.

People were wondering if Smith (4.49) would be able to run with receivers down the field, while people were confident Davis would (4.41). They were confident because of their 40 times, but the truth is Davis gets beat deep almost twice as often as Smith.

Clay and Clark share one thing, they are extremely quick and can (hopefully) out-athlete LBers for the first. They also are big enough to use the size advantage against Ss.

Also Fasano is forced to block a LOT with our OLINE – unless they are much better Clay won’t be able to catch many passes….b/c he will be on the bench as FASANO is blocking…

Fasano was ASKED to block a lot...

but he didn’t NEED to. Our O-line was decent in pass protection. As a matter of fact, Fasano was asked to block more with CP than he was with Henne.
