Miami Dolphins Top 10 Draft Busts: #10 Pat White

Over the next four weeks, we'll be reliving some of the best and worst draft picks in Miami Dolphins history. And since I want to get the "bad karma" out of the way well before the Dolphins are on the clock in 2011, we're going to highlight the draft busts first.

The #10 Miami Dolphins Draft Bust of All Time is...

Pat White, who was a 2009 2nd round pick, 44th overall.

Some might feel like I'm being harsh on White. After all, John Beck will not be on this list (he's a dishonorable mention, though) despite being picked 40th overall in 2007 - four spots earlier than White was in 2009. But at least Beck completed some passes and is still in the league.

Star-divide

White, meanwhile, failed to complete a single pass during the one season he spent in the NFL. After the Dolphins cut the former West Virginia star, no other team even showed an inkling of interest. He then went on to try his hand at professional baseball - but again failed to have any success.

The bottom line here is that you expect to get more out of a top 45 pick than this - White's lone highlight in the NFL.

in my opinion . . .

Pat White was never really given a legit shot to succeed by the “Trifecta” I can’t speak with what went on in practice, but it seems that all they did is f**k with his head. They tried to change his style of play to a more prototypical QB. At WV in my eyes, all he was, was just a half back under center. Kind of like drafting a receiver and projecting for him to play running back.

by Dolfan2006 on Apr 4, 2011 1:15 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I agree

Yes he drafted with wildcat offense in mind…
I don’t know if he can play at truly QB in the NFL, but he hasn’t the opportunity, and when he could has a chance… he become injured. But he was a running guy, this is his first instinct… and he was quick… I always think in him more than a WR or speed RB than a QB (in fact in Madden 09 I change him to RB and work very well as receiving RB)

Yeah. He broke tons of records ,so to dismiss his achievements would be wrong. I just dont think he was given a fair chance at all,not saying hes a franchise qb, but you don’t put up his numbers in college if you are a talentless moron. He had potential.

Oh please.. how can so many people say he was not given a fair shot?

The Fo drafted him way to early and if you draft a Qb in round 2 and he is the 4th Qb quality wise on your roster you cut your losses and move on. If ANY TEAM thought he was worth ANYTHING he would have been given another shot somewhere else. Everyone knew the Phins screwed up drafting him so early. Bottom line is he was a 5th or 6th round prospect and the phins had Widcat on the brain.

The Dolphins through the years

have produced a veritable cornucopia of shitty draft picks. It might be easier to pick the
best draft picks as the list would probably be smaller.

62lou listed the rogues gallery but failed to include our first two picks ever: Jim Grabowski who opted not to play for the Dolphins but rather with the Packers…and who could ever forget Rick Norton. Or maybe I should ask who can remember him.

Also Jackie Shipp belongs on that list someplace as well.

I realized Parcells' is only a consultant now, but when it comes to the draft

I feel Bill is still going to have a lot of influence in the Dolphins WAR room.

That being said, last year I posted on Bill Parcell’s tendencies

It just so happens your team selected Jared Odrick in the 1st round. Now, making it 10 of 20 big-ten players selected by teams Parcells has been apart of.

I’ve been reading up on some opinions. Many pseudo-experts think you’ll be drafting either a RB/QB/or Pass Rusher in the 1st.

Mikel LeShoure RB, Ryan Kerrigan OLB, and Ryan Mallett QB(roots in Michigan) are Big-Ten players

and are 1 of the 3 players I’d wager that the Dolphins are going to take in the 1st round.

1.QB Ryan Mallett 2.G Ben Ijalana 3.CB Jalil Brown 4.NT Kendrick Ellis 4.CB Kendric Burney 5.S Tyler Sash 6.WR Lester Jean 6.RB Chad Spann 7.OLB Jamari Lattimore 7.Kicker 7.CB Richard Sherman

no other choice

I did some research and the next quarterback drafted was in the 4th round and the that was Mcgee to the Cowboys. The Trifecta wanted a quarterback and that was the best available. I have been looking at replays for the past two seasons and yes Ginn did drop passes, he was scared to play the game, but he was the only player in the past 2 years that actually brought excitement to the Dolphins. He should have at least three more kick off returns and and least two or three more touchdowns of 50+ yards, if it wasnt for penalties. Who in our current team can say that. Brown was caught from behind against the Vikings, Marshall don’t know yet as Henne cant lead him, and Ricky was caught by Revis. If you want to say about a bad draft I may through out Long and in the mix as we could have had Ryan. Yes Ryan could have gotten killed with out a left tackle, but you can find one in the mid 1st round or later.

by dolphin fan in va on Apr 4, 2011 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Beck would be #11.

The reason White is ahead is because he’s not even in the league anymore. Beck is at least a 3rd stringer.

It says a lot about White that NO team even tried to sign him when the Dolphins cut him.

by Matty I on Apr 4, 2011 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I hear ya

I’ll withhold judgement until I see the other 9. Lets be honest here, a 3rd stringer? He might as well be out the league. Lets compare. Since he left Miami how much actual regular season playing time has he had compared to White’s playing time last year?

I'd imagine White had more PT than Beck.

But the fact that not one team in a QB hungry league wanted to try and develop White says a lot. He’s a 2nd rd pick who NEVER completed a regular season pass and who is out of the NFL after 1 season. That’s ridiculous.

by Matty I on Apr 4, 2011 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not arguing with ya, (maybe I am) I see what you are saying

But Beck isn’t playing either. And after that Buffalo game I wished Beck didn’t throw any completed passes either.

And to be truthful, Beck was suppose to be the future of this organization. I think Pat was more of a experimental project. With CP and Henne already in the fold, how much playing time was he actually gonna see. When he was put in, do you think TS told him to pass? And are you saying that they didn’t give up on Pat White too soon?

On the other Hand Beck played awful when he did play. He couldn’t clearly beat out Cleo Lemon..CLEO LEMON. He had every chance to take the starting job, unlike Pat White and couldn’t do it. Then again Cam Cam (spit) was our HC and handled the QB position horribly. Beck didn’t have a proven running game or passing threat.

So I’ll see the rest of your top 10 and we’ll see.

PS I still see Wilson running that pass back for a TD in the Buffalo game in my nightmares. Did I mention that games was against Buffalo?

“White, meanwhile, failed to complete a single pass during the one season he spent in the NFLq”

So, how many pass attempts did he even attempt? Seems like he was always in wildcat when we saw him. I personally dont think he even got a fair shot. I also don’t think had the front office known their qb depth chart was going to blow up they would have kept white, let him wear his dumb glove and let him have more then a games worth of snaps. People talk as if he was the starter all season and bombed out. It defiantly didn’t help his image after getting a head shot in that Stealers*game.

by Corners on Apr 4, 2011 4:26 PM EDT reply actions

I was on this site for both the Beck and Ginn picks.

So I know Matty’s secret shame, haha.

But the problem I had with both picks is that they were both so obviously bad when we made them. A 26 year old with little to no upside and a wildcat specialist ‘jack of all trades / master of none’.

Some people on here supported the Beck pick other than Matty, I remember. Even I was willing to give him a try. And he did come into a horrible, horrible situation. But everyone knew instantly that the White pick was a waste of a pick, a luxury pick at best. In the second round that’s just unforgivable. I can handle whiffing on a pick like Beck, I can’t handle an arrogant luxury pick like White.

Eddie Moore is more a reflection of a bust in the FO than a bust in and of himself

Not saying he wasn’t a bust, but I would put 1st rounders before him always.

I am not saying that he wasn’t a stupid choice though as we all knew at the time.

"The first thing I do when I get out of bed and feel the jolt in my knees is think of Roy Winston. On the second step, my calcified Adam's apple starts bobbing, and I think of Carl Eller. A few more steps in the dark and it's Willie Lanier. By the time I get to the bathroom, I'm flashing back to Dick Butkus and Ray Nitschke. And when the light finally comes on, I just hope that somewhere in the darkness they're thinking of me, too" - Larry Csonka.

Let us not forget Cecil "the diesel" Collins

He may be the single best example of why not to draft a guy with character concerns!

Here are 8 1st rd busts that go before White

Yatil Green, Sammy Smith, John Avery, Billy Milner, Eric Kumerow, Jamar Fletcher, Ted Ginn, Jason Allen.

Oh, and Randal Hill makes nine.

Since this is a top ten list, I assume White fits in at #10 since we have to move into Rd 2.

But a wasted first rd choice imo is pretty much by definition a bigger bust than a wasted 2nd rd pick.

Beck is a worse pick than Allen

I just don't think a wasted 2nd rounder ever is a bigger bust than a bad first rounder

I will give you that Allen actually did one or two things for the team but he did not live up to his draft status and his draft status was higher. Therefore, imo, bigger bust.

I see what you are saying

I really don’t have a problem with that now that you are comparing where they were drafted. I was just looking at overall contribution to the team. We did get 4 years out of Allen thought, how much playing time out of Beck. Either way both picks sucked.

yes. Looking into this issue always just makes me depressed.

Compare to the Packers and Steelers for example, who have excellent players and a lot of their own draft choices.

If you were to ask me though to build my own team and I had to choose between Beck and Allen, like picking players in Grade school, I would take Allen most likely.

In any case, the idea that Beck doesn’t make the list of top 10 busts and that I can make a credible argument for why Pat White doesn’t either is just really depressing.

Allen was messed around...

He’s a CB, he’s a Safety, he’s a CB again … sure he never made “shut down” status but he was serviceable for a while. Always did a good job on Randy Moss.

Well, still a bust though

8 Ints last year.

With Vontae shutting down the #1 receivers on teams, we should have rolled Clemons or Bell toward Allen’s side knowing that he would eventually make a play for a ball and miss, but there was never safety help for his high risk/high reward play. I think he was finally just showing the ability to be a beast and yet we didn’t give him the safety help that Vontae didn’t need.

Oh, what about John Bosa. honestly I don't remember him at all. his stats tell me he was a bust

but perhaps he had some overriding issue (like say David Overstreet R.I.P.)

If so, I think we have 10 first rd busts who therefore knowck white out of contention in My opinion.

Bosa played well but an injury ended his career very early.

An injury bust should be in a different list than a lack of talent bust. Injuries are not always forseeable. (R. Hill, S. Smith, J. Bosa,….). But, a bust because our F.O. can’t evaluate talent properly is entirely different.
