Whether you know the reference or not, please go watch this clip. Oh Richard, always screwing up the high F. Now you're probably wondering where the hell I'm going with an arbitrary South Park reference. Hold on, let me help you out:
Rroan28 brilliantly recalled this clip during a CKC last night and compared it to the feeling of us drafting Pouncey. However, the point of this post isn't to rail on John Stamos's Brother (we can do that in the comments if you'd like); it's to point out that this regime has yet again chosen the safe and easy route.
The Drought Continues
28 years. Thats how long it's been since the Phins selected a QB with a first round pick. Meanwhile teams such as the Rams, Lions, Packers, Bears (Cutler was a first rounder and they gave up two more for him), Bucs, Giants, Eagles, Chargers, Broncos (turned Cutler into Orton, 2 firsts and 2 thirds) Colts, Bengals, Ravens, Steelers and the JETS have all FOUND SUCCESS BY SACKING UP AND TAKING "THEIR" DUDE AS SOON AS THEY COULD. You can also add AT LEAST one of the teams who drafted a youngin today (odds are pretty good that at least one of them pans out). So lets say two of the QB's drafted yesterday become studs (again, chances are very good this will happen as well). That's half of the teams in the league who found success with a first round QB.
Look at the list again. What playoff caliber teams are missing? The Boys lucked into Romo, the Pats lucked into Brady, the Saints were smart and signed Brees, the Texans swapped first rounders and gave up two seconds for Schaub, the Jags took Leftwich in the first, sat with Garrard for awhile and now just took Gabby, and the Chiefs at least almost gave up first rounder (34th overall) for Cassel (and a really old Mike Vrabel). See my point yet?
You still don't see my point you say? Well let's look at the rest of the teams....the Cards, Seahawks, Redskins, Raiders, Bills, Browns and....Us. Does anyone else like being grouped together with these franchises? I sure as hell don't.
"A fire burns inside that man, Dan Marino" -Jim "Mad Dog" Mandich
There's really no need for me to say anything more about the man. I think the video did a pretty good job of that for me. What I do want to say will be depressing for most if not all. Ready for it? Here goes: Damon Huard, Jay Fiedler, Ray Lucas, Brian Griese, A.J. Feeley, Sage Rosenfels, Gus Frerrote, Joey Harrington, Daunte Culpepper, Cleo Lemon, Trent Green, John Beck, Chad Pennington, Chad Henne and Tyler Thigpen. 15 QB's have started for this franchise since Marino retired. 15. Some bad. Some decent. Some pretty good. But no franchise players on that list. If you want to find those types of QB's you'll need to look elsewhere. Wanna know where you can find most of em? Then you should go ask the teams that are part of that first list I mentioned earlier. I think they can point you in the right direction...
Dear Mr. Ireland,
Hi, I feel I must send you this message because I think you've forgotton (or haven't noticed) that this a QB fueled league now. Franchise QB's are more bountiful than ever AND happen to have the highest currency around. Did you get hit on the head and lose all memory of the transition the league has taken from "ground and pound" to "greatest shows on turf"? Have you not noticed that speed and agility are more desirable traits than anything linked to the old adage "bigger is better"? Did you miss the Superbowl in February? Did you not witness the team you hope to become get dismantled by the team you are resisting to become? The Packers were faster and simply gassed the Steelers into a loss. The "bigger is better" team was slain by the quick and agile David. WERE YOU SLEEPING OR SOMETHING?!?!?!? Please respond as soon as possible because I fear for my pet rabbit.
Enough Is Enough
Look Matty just posted it and said but I'll reflect his opinion once more: I don't think Pouncey sucks. I believe that he possible was the best interior lineman prospect in this draft. But the issue here is that interior lineman are right in front of kickers and punters in terms of starting positions (not including st) value. Unless you have a once in a lifetime prospect like say John Hannah, you don't go grabbing interior lineman in the top 20. Ever. Look at past drafts. It doesn't happen. Its like anyone in the secondary going in the top 3. It just doesn't happen.
Case in point, this FO decided to play it SAFE. Ireland said so himself. Is that the attitude you want your GM to have? That attitude is what has mired this organization in mediocrity for over a decade along with the other sad franchises I listed earlier. You HAVE TO BE a risk taker to a point to succeed in this league as a GM. Ireland is not a risk taker (and no, the pat white pick was just stupid not risky) and has already proven it yet again this year. Mike Pouncey. More line help. Now we can run the ball awesome again. Now we can kick FG's.......
Sorry. Flatlined there for a second. Where was I? Oh right, this FO sucks, almost forgot.
A "offense line guru" as an HC whos had to drop two first round picks on lineman, multiple later round picks, constant churning and constant uneven play.
A new OC who coached one of the worst offesense in the league last year. To be fair that team sucks (but he did have Peyton Hillis) but did you ever go watch the browns offense after we hired him and left impressed at all? I sure didn't and I really, really wanted to.
And a GM who appears to not have testicles because time and time again he keeps going down the "safe" road. UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Im gonna be honest. Ive had it with this FO. Ive had it with mediocrity. Im tired of watching my beloved Phins be a proverbial stepping stone for the Jets and Pats. This is a PROUD franchise dammit. Were not the effing Cardinals or the Redskins. Im tired of watching this team be a doormat. If you disagree with me already go watch the Marino highlights again. Then come back to me and tell me that Chad Henne can ever be a quarter that way. Marino had "it" and Henne does not plain and simple. This FO put their stamp on that kid and so far hes been a major disappointment. Therefore I dont trust this FO at all and have ZERO loyalty to it....Im loyal to this franchise, not the guys currently running it. If they do a crappy job its our effing right to question them. Ireland isn't GOD. WERE ALLOWED TO QUESTION HIM. Good lord. Hes not Zeus in hiding just waiting to strike you down with his mighty greek-goddian powers. Last I checked, we inadvertently fund his effing salary. THE MAN WORKS FOR US. Without fans, there wouldn't be an NFL. So stop freaking telling me that I cant question my team and that if I do Im "not better than f****** jets fan". ENOUGH.
I feel slightly better. The end.
Because I love self toture Im going to post a poll to a nice resonance on how people around these parts feel about our current QB situation (calling it anything else could start a flame war that I do not want lol). So here we go; I feel like Ive provided quite few options so READ ALL of them before choosing, and yes most of the answers are intended to be humurous but please pick the one thats closest to how you feel:
