We all know the notion that a first round QB is your best bet to finding your franchise gunslinger, but is that really true?
Since it's the hardest position to learn, I find that it really just takes time to let these leaders find their grooves. With the way QB's are coached nowadays, a 3rd or 4th round prospect may develop into a fine passer with time. Here is a list of all the Starting QB's or QB's that should be starting, but don't for some reason or another.
These are in round order.
First Round
Manning
Rodgers
Rivers
Manning
Roethlisberger
McNabb
Palmer
Flacco
Ryan
Sanchez
Freeman
Cutler
Young
A. Smith
Vick
Stafford
Bradford
Campbell
Second Round
Brees
T. Jackson
Clausen
Kolb (Only because he was supposed to be the starter til they pulled the ol switcheroo)
Henne
Third Round
Shaub
McCoy
Fourth Round
Orton
Garrard
Fifth Round
Sixth Round
Brady
Hasslebeck
Anderson
Seventh Round
Cassel
Fitzpatrick
Undrafted
Romo
I would also like to add an honorable mention section for the likes of Matt Flynn, Chase Daniel, Matt Moore, Shaun Hill, Tim Tebow, Caleb Hanie, Stephen McGee, and Joe Webb. These are all guys with potential to fill in and lead their teams to wins.
Out of that list of QB's, it seems that half are first rounders and the other half is comprised of different rounds. So who is to say that a first round pick is a must for QB? If we pick up Stanzi in the 3rd and he becomes a solid starter after a few years to get the game down, are we in the wrong for not taking someone like Newton or Ryan?
I'm not gonna knock on Henne, I think this dude can put his game together. I just don't want to abandon him now after a couple of mediocre seasons while he tries to learn the game. This really should be his final year to package everything he learned and after those 4th Quarter comebacks we saw in 2009 it shows the kid can play.
So for the draft, I say we get a good lineman, a fast running back, a badass TE and someone like Dalton or Stanzi in the 3rd or 4th. Let's actually start to groom Qb's instead of trying desperately to fill the void that Dan left. I always feel that we naturally just can't let these guys come into their own. They must ALL be the next coming of Marnio. A fact that adds too much pressure on an already fragile student trying to learn the game.
So what do ya'll think? Should we take a Mallet or Ponder at 15, or look to add more firepower and grab some later round Qb's with talent that we can maybe groom into a better position?
