Miami Dolphins Top 10 Draft Busts: #3 Yatil Green
The #3 Miami Dolphins Draft Bust of All Time is...
Yatil Green, who was a 1997 1st round pick, 15th overall.
I've seen a lot of people put the selection of Green as the top draft bust in the franchise's history. But I have him at number three because I can see what Jimmy Johnson was trying to do here. The Dolphins needed some speed at receiver. They needed a receiver with big-play ability. And Green had all that - which is why he was considered a first-round talent by most heading into the draft.
But some very bad luck turned this selection into a total disaster. Yatil tore his ACL on the first day of training camp his rookie season. Then in 1998, Green again tore his ACL in camp. When Green finally stepped onto the field in 1999, he had lost his explosiveness and wasn't the same player he was in college.
His career ended with just 18 receptions after three seasons in Miami and a failed comeback attempt with Oakland.

It's always hard for me to consider injury-plagued guys as busts
But I suppose they’re to be considered busts nonetheless.

I agree
Its very difficult to say a draft pick is a bust when really the pick itself was not the problem, it was simply injuries.
A bad break for everyone? Sure it was but I don’t fault JJ for taking him…
I HATED this pick also...
Green was injury prone in college – thin, weak frame… I feel sorry for him, but this was a terrible pick to start with. He had future injuries written all over him…..
Don’t forget JJ was the num nut coach and genius, who passed on RANDY MOSS – TRADING DOWN TO DARFT Jon Avery – and later drafting a loser named Larry shannon WR – saying “he is as good as Randy Moss” Hell, he should have been fired for that alone. JJ built a great defense – but he destroyed Marino’s last few years handcuffing him with inferior talent, and mediocre OLINE.

Franchise QB... NOW !!! ...Draft Ryan Mallett ...Draft some Freakin speed for a change. WR & RB speed kills......
This weak frame?
Yatil was 6’2" and 205…..Randy Moss is 6’4" 210….Randy looks slimmer than Yatil did. I’m not comparing Yatil to Randy as a receiver, Yatil was injured too often to get a legitimate shot and being a solid receiver.
JJ also drafted Surtain in that Draft,
Yatil just struggled with knee injuries
10 surgeries in 3 years. He wasn’t injury prone in college, he just blew his knee apart in training camp and never recovered. It happens. I agree with you, Yatil did not have a small frame or weak body.

I actually liked this pick when it was made. Shows what I know! =)
Green is a big bust because he is a 1st round pick that had no impact on the team at all. You have to wonder though if he didn’t get hurt what type of player would he have been.

JJ wanted a Michael Irvin type
and gambled on Green but the red flag should have been the injuries he sustained when he was at the U. Good WR skills but he was IR just waiting to happen.
Hey, we could have dropped down at gotten Rae Carruth later in the first round. See? Things could always be worse. lol

He played 9 or more games 4 years in a row in college
injuries were not a concern, especially catastrophic knee injuries. His knee blew apart in training camp, it has nothing to do with college.
There wasn’t an injury red flag, and hindsight doesn’t make it a gamble.
by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 13, 2011 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions
The pick itself wasnt a gamble, my bad choice of words.
Because of his size and speed YG was considered one of the top WRs in the draft. The injuries that I mentioned that could have been red-flagged were unspecified by (can I mention the website?) but you’re right, none were of the devastating variety that he suffered in his pro years.
JJ was familiar with players at the U. But there was some documentation of injuries by (that website) that may have red-flagged Green.
It simply stated " Yatil Green was variously graded as either the first or second best WR in the 1997 draft..yada yada…coming out as a junior, Green caught 42 passes for 669 yards and 3 TDs during his last year in college despite being suspended 2 games in 1996 and sitting out alot of the time with injuries."
I dont think career-ending injury should label a quality athlete a bust, rather what that athlete does transitioning from a successful college career to the pro level. Green was just victim of the black marble but not a true bust because he was rated a first round pick and just fell victim to injury….My interpretation of a bust is a guy that is rated high, picked high and as a result of ‘not getting it’, crashes at the pro level.

good comment
and you’re absolutely right that there was some injuries, but they were not anything more serious than “bumps and bruises.” He played in at least 9 games in all 3 of his college seasons (typo’d 4 above). In 96, he missed two games due to suspension. Back to back seasons he was healthy enough for 11 games. In 95, he played in every game. In 96 he missed 2 games to suspension, and apparently 1 more (they played 12). So I don’t know how he sat out a lot with injuries. He missed one game due to health his sophomore and junior year. I don’t understand how that would red flag him, unless something had come up pre-draft, which I don’t recall.
by Little Nicky 21 on Apr 13, 2011 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions
But Green missed 3 games his senior year...the most IMP year...
So he had injury concerns coming out… any way you slice it. ANY PLAYER missing 3 games the SR year – probably wouldnt get drafted by me…
His numbers: were not that great either…
SR year 44 REC – 746 yds 4 TD’s
JR year 25 REC – 476 yds 2 TD’s
Yea – he was a GREAT CHOICE… LOL…. I know there are a lot of “U” lovers on this site. sorry but he was a failure…He didnt mke #3 on the list for nothing !
HELL – JAMMI GERMAIN was a better “U” WR in my opinion…
This young man did not deserve these injuries – no one does… but his “bust” status is absolute. I imagine he rehabbed hard trying to recover, also I thought JJ put him on the field too soon out of frustration about the pick….Johnson drafted from his BIAS toward “U” players…just like Saben did later in fins history…

btw
He led the team in receptions, receiving yards, and was one of 4 players with 4 or more TD’s (one with 7, 3 tied with 4). They had 12 players catch 10+ passes. His numbers weren’t phenomenal because they spread the ball around.
I’m a hardcore UM fan, and I was disappointed with what happened to Yatil. But to try and say you saw this coming or it should have been obvious is ridiculous. He was a top rated WR in that draft, and was the 2nd WR taken, behind Ike Hilliard. It wasn’t a reach, there weren’t any indications that he’d bust. Blowing a knee out does not mean you suck at football, and that’s what you are hinting at with this post.

I agree
A career ending injury doesn’t make the pick or the player a bust….
With all of the truly bad picks the Phins have had over the years this one doesn’t belong on the list…
well he was still a bust
I’m not gonna argue that. He was drafted high, and we didn’t get production from him. Busted pick. But it wasn’t for lack of talent or desire, but rather bad luck, both for the player and the team.

Nicky..
I read and agree with most of your VERY GOOD posts… I think you are a very educated Fins fan and I respect your opinions and posts…but I did say he would be a BUST to all my friends & 2 brothers on the day of the draft. I told them he was hurt in college and didnt look durable to me at all. (I know mostly we were talking hamstring) …….
So it is fact and not ridiculous…. I will admit when I am wrong about a player as well. In this case I was spot on… Now I want to admit that I do not like UM players on the whole, even though they have players with talent usually. I wouldnt draft them most of the time.
I HATED this pick then and sure, though NOT his fault Yatil proved my suspicions correct…he would not be durable and would be a bust…. Just because I am a FAN and not a coach or GM or staffer – dosent mean I can’t be right too, when it comes to player evaluations.

UM players in the first round
Here’s all the UM players drafted in history
Finding the 1st round busts is a scavenger hunt.
Since 1997, Miami has put 31 players in the first round. 4 have busted, including Yatil. 87% success rate. I think drafting from UM has worked out extremely well for every other team in the league. That’s a poor bias to hold, since a high number of their players are successful in the NFL. 10 former UM players played in the Pro Bowl last year.
What I’m trying to tell you is that injuries were not a concern in college. In his sophomore and junior year (his final 2 in college) he missed 1 game due to health. 1. One. Uno. He wasn’t hurt in college, he blew his knee to shreds in training camp. I’m sorry, but there is no way I’m buying that you had durability questions about Yatil Green when there was nothing to question.

He belongs on the list
Inclusion on a list like this is about inability to deliver on the expectations. He cashed the paychecks, right?
Whether it’s due to injury, lack of talent or bad luck, it doesnt matter. he didn’t deliver.
I’m sure he’s a nice guy…I hope his life turned out great ever since….but a bust is a bust.
I’d have probably made him number 1.

Here's a quick story that I heard from when Yatil Green was hurt the first time.
In 1997, during training camp Dan Marino was firing passes at the rookie Yatil Green and he was dropping them left and right. Dan Marino was “pissed off!” Marino turns and says “If this (##^&$^*&$ drops another ball I’m NEVER throwing him another one!” On the next play Yatil tears the ACL, and was gone for the season
"If anything goes bad, I did it. If anything goes semi-good, we did it. If anything goes really good you did it. That's all it takes to get people to win football games for you."
Coach Paul Bear Bryant
thats Dan
he sure could hum that ball in there, couldnt he? I’m surprised more passes werent dropped the way he threw it.
"I likem me some UDFAs"
Ok, Gruden was a lil rough on him.
This was the QB I wanted the Fins to draft. Now I’m not so sure. Has a strong arm, good deep ball, fairly accurate. Pocket awarenesses needs a lil improvement, not so mobile cause of his big frame, but he ain’t a turtle back there either. He has the smarts and the leadership skills.
There must be some other reasons why this guy isn’t a for sure top 5-10 pick. I mean from what I saw this guy is a better QB than Gabbert. Any comments?

didn’t reveal much.
He’s got a great arm, solid decision maker, needs a clean pocket.
I think he can be elite but in the right system and environment.
i have no idea why Gabbert is rated so high. looks like a mediocre qb to me. Reminds me of Mark Sanchez.

That he reminds me of Mark Sanchez. Nothing special, needs work, manages the game, doesn’t have a big time arm.

Being a pocket passer isn't a bad thing
Peyton Manning is doing alright, Tom Brady does pretty well from the pocket. Heck, Dan Marino threw for 60,000 yards, and he did it in about 4 years!

My bad, I meant to do that as a quote
That’s what Jon Gruden joked in his Ryan Mallett interview lol

I was figuring that you knew it, but, some who read that might assume you were actually
stating factual stats. Not everyone will watch the video or catch on to the Gruden humor in that statement.
Haha
I could deal with an average of 15,000 yards per season over four years. If anyone was capable of that, it was Dan.
"Every island has a beach and mine there will be called Beast Beach."

If he could have done that, there would have been no need for a running game.
The only other player I think who can come close to Dan would be Peyton.
lol
anybody who thought Dan threw for 60,000 yards in 4 years doesn’t watch football.

I didnt see Gruden being rough on him
…maybe trying to get Mallet to open up a little. Mallet seemed a bit intimidated by Gruden until he was asked to run through some plays on the white board and then you could see Mallet’s
football smarts click in.
I dont see Mallet going to the broadcast booth after his pro career is done, but I can easily see him being a smart and dynamic QB on the playing field.
