Miami Dolphins Top 10 Draft Busts: #4 Jamar Fletcher

The #4 Miami Dolphins Draft Bust of All Time is...

Jamar Fletcher, who was a 2001 1st round pick, 26th overall.

As if it wasn't bad enough that the former Wisconsin cornerback lasted only three years in Miami and intercepted only two passes. But I was tempted to rank Fletcher higher than fourth on this list for two reasons. One - the Dolphins had no need for a corner in 2001. Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain were absolute studs. Why waste a first round pick on a nickel corner?

Star-divide

And two - the guys that the Dolphins passed over to select this nickel corner.

How about Reggie Wayne, Todd Heap, and Chad Johnson. Oh yeah - and there was this quarterback named Drew Brees. What ever happened to him? Well at least Nick Saban helped correct this wrong by signing him as a free agent in 2006.

Wait - what? They passed on Brees again? Really?

That whole mess could have been avoided with one simple decision. But apparently Jamar Fletcher was just too tempting.

I disagree

Wannstedt had four winning seasons before he was shitcanned after a 1-8 start in ‘04. As much as Wanny was too predictable and too conservative on offense, Cam Camoron made Wannstedt look like a genius in comparison. . Say what you will about injuries in ’07; every team has key injuries. But when we play the Ravens if Matt Stover doesnt miss his OT FG attempt, we’re first to go 0-16 and the Lions are an afterthought.

Cameron was the absolute worst. And I’m not even talking about the Ginn pick.

Jimmy Johnson left the keys of a successful team which Wannstedt and Speilman subsequently ran into a ditch

Wannstedt inherited the best defense I have ever seen in Miami ....

And proceeded to lose with a crappy QB. He had a chance at Drew Brees but passed on him for another CB? How can you possibly defend that line of thinking?

Wanny vs Cam

I choose Wanny as being the worst over Cam for one reason. Cam only had 1 year to set us back, though the season was full people mocking the Dolphins play and the “We drafted the Ginn family” speech.

Wanny on the other hand, had multiple years to set Miami back. In his 4 years, we only got Bell, Carey, McMichael, and Chambers as solid starters. At least with Cam, we got Soliai and Fields along with the Ginn family.

Wanny

If his personality is similar to his ultra-conservative offensive philosophy, he’d probably be too afraid to throw a punch. I think he’s the type of guy that would just throw his wallet on the ground and run away.

Indeed but the pick was still stupid

Going into last year’s draft we had Starks, Langford, Merling and McDaniel at DE. Its the same situation that was with Jamar Fletcher. There is NO reason what soever that a DE should have been taken in the 1st round when we were more than deep at the position

So your saying its a wise move to take a position your strong at (Starks at DE) and weaken it by moving him to a position he'd never played before at NT?

In doing so your basically weakening 2 positions. Yes I’m saying that is a stupid plan.

Solia had been on the team for years and had shown flashes. Its the coaches fault for not trusting themselves and the player to perform when given the oppurtunity

I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?

by Souwantmyname on Apr 12, 2011 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

you aren't talking about totally changing what the guy does...

You are just talking about where he is lining up…. Would I rather we go get a prototypical BIG NT in the draft… um .. yeah … but I am not ready to call Starks a weakness at any position along that D-line…. now if you are talking about moving him out to CB … well yeah … he is a weakness then ….

by Damarys Scott on Apr 12, 2011 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

So you're suggesting...

we should have taken Taylor Mays or Sergio Kindle instead? Because one had a potentially career ending head injury and the other is terrible. They used the BPA model when they picked up Odrick. You can’t judge the pick in a negative light at all; Merling hasn’t lived up to they hype, they wanted to move Starks to NT because Soliai hadn’t done a damn thing yet either, and McDaniel is a situational guy. Not to mention Odrick’s injury before we got to see him do anything.

Oh, Misi turned out to be the right pick of Kindle too. But I suppose you think that pick sucked too?

by Fintastic4andMore on Apr 12, 2011 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Man you like to jump to conclusions

Where did i say anything about Mays or Kindle? I didnt like either player in the draft for you information. If I were drafting I would have taken Jahvid Best or Patrick Robinson. Both of which were huge needs for us at the time.

Also I’m not sold on the Misi pick. He never showed a pass rush in college and hasnt done much opposite Wake

Starks

Actually, Starks was a DT before he was ever a DE with the Dolphins. Starks wasn’t a 3-4 NT, but he’s had a lot of experience playing inside on the line.

Picking Odrick

It may have been a little surprising, but it wasn’t stupid. Starks was converting to NT, which wasn’t a stupid move because they felt he could perform similar to Jay Ratliff and use athleticism to break the line. Merling was always an issue with his performance and it’s not like people were really comfortable with him starting.

How can you say we got nothing for the pick. He’ll be a solid starter from here on out. Considering how often a DL is rotated, I want as many good players there as possible.

Well...

He won the starting job way back in training camp and didn’t really look back. He had some solid games and I seem to recall him chasing down someone(please someone help me remember who) he had no business being able to chase down from behind as a DE. The guy got hurt early in the season and tried to come back too early and hopefully learned to never do that again. I think the guy is going to be solid for us for years to come.

by Damarys Scott on Apr 12, 2011 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Even labelling Odrick an early bust,2 out of three isnt bad

No matter how you look at it that’s still a 66.6% success rate in the first round.

In the second they are at about 50% a bit low,but not detrimentally so.

In round 3,we are down to about 33.3 percent

In the fourth we are back up to 66.6%

The fifth so far we are batting .1000

The sixth we managed to add depth that we then tore down on Oline, but we don’t even know what we have in the RB we picked.

The seventh round is an unknown, and really doesn’t matter, because no one expects to find a franchise player in the seventh

But ironically, its our undrafted rookies where these guys seem to flourish.

Drew Brees

Not drafting Drew Brees is what I remember as such a huge mistake in this draft. Jamar Fletcher was not only a wasted pick, but to think we desparately needed a QB and failed to take Brees is unthinkable. Our draft mistakes during this time ranked right up there with the mid to late ’80’s.

by Bill29036 on Apr 12, 2011 4:33 PM EDT reply actions

I guess people dont remember the fact that Drew Brees SUCKED in SD up until the final year of his contract when SD had essentially “given up” on Brees and drafted Rivers.

they drafted insurance. Just like a team always should when it comes to the QB position. If you have a young guy developing, you should still be drafting QBs every year to develop behind him until the first guy is actually a PROVEN stud.

by Souwantmyname on Apr 13, 2011 2:55 AM EDT up reply actions

So you would agree?

By 2004 Brees was a stud, and SD, if they ever actually did “give up” on Brees, they most certainly had rescinded that feeling in 2004 and forward. The talk at the time Brees was drafted was that he was another Bob Griese – ala Purdue – QB the Dolphins could build upon. I’d say that, coupled with drafting Fletcher and NOT drafting Brees – we TOTALLY missed the mark.

Not sure what you dislike so much about four-time Pro Bowler Brees, but he is still playing well while Jamar Fletcher is selling insurance or something else.

by Bill29036 on Apr 13, 2011 8:12 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Brees

I was hoping Miami would draft him, but of course Miami’s policy in Wanny’s era was that Miami shouldn’t have a first round pick, which is why we only had 2 first round picks in 5 years. So, the next best option to not having a first round pick, is to discard it on a poor choice. In the end, it was a huge mistake to pass up on Brees. Regardless of how poorly Brees started in SD, he was the 2nd highest QB prospect behind Vick and warranted being picked 26 overall.

I was actually happier with the decision to draft Chambers in the 2nd than I was with Fletcher in the 1st and even then I thought Chambers would end up being the better player.

Who's worst ever?

Imagine having the #1 overall pick and selecting a player that refuses to play for you. That’s exactly what happened with Jim Grabowskil How good could our choice have been? Grabowski was selected in the first round of the 1966 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers, with the ninth overall selection. Grabowski went on to play five seasons for the Packers, and finished his professional career by playing a single season for the Chicago Bears in 1971. Over his six seasons in the NFL, Grabowski rushed for 1,731 yards and scored 11 touchdowns (8 rushing, 3 receiving). Maybe we were lucky. Maybe we were just plain stupid.

It gets better …

Our #2 overall pick in 1966 was Kentucky QB Rick Norton, who DID sign with us. Just for the record, the NFL draft selected him with the 25th pick in the SECOND round. He played three years with Miami, amassing a whopping 7 TD’s as compared to 30 INT’s, for roughly 1800 yds and a QB rating of 30.

Hands down, without a doubt, the 1966 draft was our WORST of all-time. Nothing even comes close.

At least I understood some of the reasons for some of the other picks. Those players just weren’t very good. This one I had no idea what the hell anyone was thinking. And the player was a reach. It was the combination of everything that is wrong with a draft pick. A pick at a position already settled with a player that shouldn’t have been drafted until at least the 2nd round.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

Everyone wants to postulate how we missed on picking certain players, but no one backs it up with scouting reports at the time they were drafted that would warrant not picking them.

Drew Brees is a perfect example. 32 teams passed on Drew Brees. That means 32 teams worth of scouts, coaches, GMs, and owners all saw something wrong with him that warranted passing him up in the first round. He then proved them all right in his first 3 years in the league. Then in his 4th year in the league he goes ape shit and plays like a Pro Bowler, and now everyone talks about how they missed out on Drew Brees. Saying anybody missed out on a player by not selecting them in the previous round before they were selected is asinine.

Not really

Brady was mediocre, hell even in his super bowl season he wasn’t much more than a game manager. 2 single SB winning drives aside, he was average as a passer until he ‘stopped’ winning SBs. Then he really took off and started leading in passing categories.

by Farorefox on Apr 12, 2011 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Was it really bad scouting?

He was a 2 year starter in a big name program with so-so stats. There’s no way a scout could have predicted Brady would have this kind of success in the NFL. Not to mention the fact that Brady only got on the field because of the injury to Drew Bledsoe.

Brees is a better example because he had decent stats in college in a pro style offense. But because he wasn’t breaking records, winning national titles, and he wasn’t the prototypically sized QB (probably the biggest reason) he dropped to the second round.

The draft has been and always will be a crap shoot. While the higher the pick, the higher the success rate. I don’t think there’s a GM/Owner/Coach in the entire history of the NFL who never missed on a pick or wound up picking a bust. All you can do is trust your instincts, the information gathered by your scouting team, and pray to the football gods the player becomes who you expect them to become.

Reminds me of the movie, "Fletch"

"The world is divided into two kinds of people: those who have tattoos, and those who are afraid of people with tattoos."
"Draft *Robert Quinn* for Wake's sake."
"Koa Misi -- the A.J. Duhe of this decade!"

fletcher over Brees.... ...

yea – this was one of the WORST picks ever. We were loaded at CB with Pat and Sam and yet we pass on Drew Brees, when we really needed a QB – HORRIBLE Front Office MGT !

41 Year FIN FAN
Franchise QB... NOW !!! ...Draft Ryan Mallett ...Draft some Freakin speed for a change. WR & RB speed kills......
