I WANT TO COMMENT ON A CLOSED POST
With an illness in the family, I haven't been able to fully read every post, which is bad for me because I learn an awful lot from many of you. Just today, I was reading one and then another and came across 62Lou's "Trading Down in 2011." Phintastic commented that he would love for Miami to trade down with San Diego for their two 2nd round picks AND their two 3rd round picks. Dolphinfan4lyfe then replied stating 4 picks may be too much. IT'S NOT TOO MUCH. Not according to the value chart. I know it's a closed post, but let's just dream and have some fun with it. Our #15 pick is worth 1050 points. The only 7 round mock draft that I could find was DraftTek.com so I checked SD's picks in round 2 - #50 (400 points) and #61 (292); round 3 - #82 (180) and #89 (145). Those four picks equal 1017. We are still due 33 points worh of a pick (maybe a couple of 7th's).
Think about it - we're not dropping WITHIN the 1st round - we're going from 15 all the way down to 50 (MAYBE). So, mathematically, that IS a realist trade. We could even ask for SD TWO 6th round picks #183 (19.2) and #201 (12) - they total 31 points.
Phintastic - WONDERFUL IDEA!!!!!! GO TELL TONY AND JEFF RIGHT AWAY . . . . .
Well, thank you all kindly for putting up with me. I appreciate it. Illness in the family is a terrible thing to go through and I'm glad I have you guys (gals) to share football dreams with.

I more meant it as in we would do better to ask for a bit much this year.
Meaning if we stockpile more picks for next year as well,we don’t have to get them all this year.

Oh, OK. Now I understand you.
See? You (generally speaking) have something on your mind and you’re not reading the post/article correctly. I get it now. Thank you.
your welcome.
And there is a lot of talent this year, but say we ask for two seconds this year,or a second this year and a third,as well as a second next year,we’d not only set ourselves up for next season, but we’d have 2 2nd round picks in 2013.
It would give us a lot more leeway nabbing our QB next season if we manage another season that puts us in the mid round area again.
Say we manage even an 8 and 8 season this year"if there is a year" and Luck is there. Wed have an extra second rounder to move up a few spots, and still not have to worry about losing our ability to get another playmaker in the second round.

As far as the so called value chart it is pretty much outdated and few (if any) GM’s still use it any longer as a basis for trades. Draft picks are just like anything else in this world. They are only worth what someone is willing to give up for them.

True but there are plenty that use it. Is it gospel? No, it is only a guide. Not sure if I can dig up an interview but I seem to recall Ireland mentioning it before.
On the "get Jake Locker in the draft no matter what it takes" bandwagon
I read that hardly any of them use it and the ones that do use it only as a guidline.
Bottom line is if a player is there that a team covets then you can screw them for the pick.

use it only as a guidline.
That’s what I said. :)
It is just that a guide, if someone offers us a package of picks that equals 1000 instead of 1050 will we still do it? Most likely, unless there is a player available at 15 that Ireland really wants. I find it laughable when I see people list a trade scenario where they say “well it equals 1020 so they could throw in a few 7th rounders to equal it”. It doesn’t work that way (unless your trading with Al Davis).
I would imagine most of the top NFL executives know the approximation of what their picks (and others) are worth, so they don’t use the value chart per se but have it logged in the back of their minds. Parcells has been around long enough I am sure he had it roughly memorized.
On the "get Jake Locker in the draft no matter what it takes" bandwagon
And yet if a GM is just in love with a player you can make that lopsided trade.

Well the Pats seem to always pull it off. Oh and they know when to cut ties
when its time.

right
I think the chart is used as a reference, mostly so GM’s don’t give up way too much, but most GM’s who have been through a few drafts have a good feel for value, have their own systems, and will value certain picks differently depending on need and player available like you said.

True. I also assume that given the fact that everyones draft board is drastically
different that a pick may be worth far more to one team vs. another if some player they valued much higher slides to that position.

Cutie, I've been on the phone
but these guys just wont answer. What can you do? If we were able to make this trade, i think getting a couple(2-3) potential starters would be help us fill more gaps. Plus we have more holes to feel with losing our RBs and the OL we need. getting 1 OL, 2 RBs and a quality TE, that would be great in the 2-3 rounds. Plus i’m sure one of the QBs will still be around in the early 2nd round if we decided to go that route.

San Diego??
Maybe I am lost here…but who is the Chargers wanting with the 15th pick? Last year the Chargers traded because they felt they where one player (Matthews) away from making a run at the Super Bowl……I have not been keep up with what the Chargers are thinking….can somebody fill me in??? I would love it if this does happen…..The Phins need it..
According to Omar:
Who do you see as a potential trade down partner in the draft" any team in the bottom half that needs a DE, DT or OT badly.
There will be a few teams that may want to trade up and get a DE or OT.

Maybe...
Maybe the Bears will want to move up and get a OT……other than that I am not sure….If a team gives up alot of picks to move up that means they are thinking like the Chargers did last year…One player away…..Maybe the Bears are a good OT away…..to me they have some holes to fill…WR…OT….DB…………I just hope some team trades with us….
The Bears have desperately needed an upgrade on their O-Line for the last 3 years,
something tells me Lovey continues with tradition and fails to address their biggest need with their 1st pick.
