Please Ponder this for a Moment.

.................................................Oh, sorry I was just thinking about some NFL draft prospects.  As I was thinking, Christian Ponder came to mind.  When I think of Christian Ponder, I either think of a solid QB who could be selected in the 2nd round, or an extremely overhyped prospect who doesn't belong in the 1st round.

The Rise

I never like it when a prospect rises too quickly.  It just doesn't seem right.  With Ponder, it feels like after the Senior Bowl and NFL combine, everyone just threw away what they previously knew about Ponder and adopted a new view.  And that view was based solely off of one game and some drills.

Before any pre-draft workouts occured, Ponder was considered a 3rd round pick by many, and a 2nd round pick by many others.  And now just a few days ago, I saw this mock draft and this Ponder-promoting FanPost, both on The Phinsider.  I'm wondering why nobody is promoting Jake Locker instead of Ponder.

Comparison

If we want a QB to come in and start right away as a rookie, we won't find it in this draft class.  Henne will be the starter next season unless we trade for Kolb/Palmer or sign a free agent.  Christian Ponder is clearly more NFL-ready than Washington's Jake Locker, but if you want to compare the potential in them, it's also very clear.  Dolphins fans need to ask, do we want a guy who can play soon and be good, or a guy that needs 2 seasons to groom and develop and then be great.  And by the stats, I don't think it's clear that Ponder is much more ready.

Ponder's stats aren't significantly better, while Ponder's supporting cast was much better.
So what's the diffrence between them?  The difference is that Locker has a much higher ceiling than Ponder.  Locker is a much better athlete (faster and more mobile), and has the arm strength that you cannot teach.  You can teach accuracy.  And keep in mind,  a flaw in Locker's game is his footwork, which will quickly improve since he won't be playing any more baseball.  Mel Kiper and Todd Mcshay don't grade Locker as the better QB prospect for no reason.

The Verdict

For Phins fans who are okay with counting on our running game to carry us through the season and the playoffs, while our QB 'manages' the game and makes some good plays here and there, they should be on the Ponder bandwagon.  For anyone who wants to take a shot at a potential star, you should be with me on The Locker bandwagon.  Ryan Mallett is another guy I like that I know we at Phinsider all seem to like, and I would much rather take him than Ponder.  We already have Henne, so why settle for the same thing except less INTs?  If we took Ponder in the 1st round and Locker and Mallett were both still available, I would be upset.  If traded down in the first, took an OL or DL, then took Ponder in the 2nd, that's not so bad.  In the mid-2nd round, he would be the best QB and best player available so I would not complain.  But I never take a solid, box-of-chocolates QB when there is another one with star potential.  And let's not forget, Pat Devlin has some legit potential and will be available in the 3rd-4th.
It's rare for a team without a superstar quarterback to win the Super Bowl (Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning have accounted for most of the 2000s SB wins).
