Fin's Finest: Guide to the Dolphins Offseason
This will be the only post you'll see from me giving my opinion on how I'd like the offseason to go. I will continue to comment on ideas of course because, well, I have a hard time staying quiet. Under this scenario, I will be forecasting that a new CBA will not be signed prior to the NFL Draft, thus no free agent signings or trades will take place before the draft.
Here is an ideal situation for the NFL Draft. I'm not as high on a lot of players as some people are at the Phinsider so I'm sure I'll receive a lot of negative feedback.
Round 1: Trading down would be my ideal solution here. In this instance, I choose the Bears for the best value in getting a fair deal as far as draft picks. On top of value, I think this could be a good situation for Chicago because it allows them to jump up in the middle of the round and get at the front of the line for 1st round OTs like Castonzo, Carimi, and Solder. In this scenario, I have the Dolphins giving up their 1st (#15) for Chicago's 1st (#29) and their 2nd (#62).
Round 1 (#29 overall):Mark Ingram, RB. RB is definitely high on Miami's list because of Brown andWilliams, but not many are thrilled about getting a RB in the 1st round. Ingram is definitely worth the pick at this point. Only the Patriots and Saints would be viable options to take Ingram in the 20s, but there are other players such as OG Orlando Franklin and TE Kyle Rudolph Miami can take if Ingram is picked. At this point, I think Ingram brings the best value to Miami.
Round 2 (#62 overall): Christian Ponder, QB. Yes, I do think Ponder will be available at this point. He may not be the most gifted QB, but he's a smart one that Miami is high on. He will bring much needed competition to Miami's QB position andwill help flood the position with players as you will see later in the post.
Round 3 (#74 overall):John Moffitt, OG. Wait, where did this pick come from? Well, in this scenario I have the Patriots doing what they do best and that is trading this pick to acquire a higher pick in 2012. In this scenario, I have Miami surrendering a 5th round pick in 2011 and a 2nd round pick in 2012. Moffitt would be a great fit in Miami because he is athletic enough to play LG, but he is also versatile enough to play center.
Round 3 (#79 overall): DJ Williams, TE. A pick many Dolphin fans wanted. Williams will bring more speed to the TE formation and will help Miami run more 2-TE sets. Williams may not immediately replace Fasano as the #1 TE, but he will have a lot of opportunities to make an impact.
Round 4 (#110 overall): Jarvis Jenkins, NT. He will provide much needed depth at the NT position. He weighs 309 lbs, but he has room to add more weight. I credit Jenkins with helping Bowers be so dominant. He is very explosive for a NT and I think the Dolphins will love that out of him.
Round 5 (#143 overall): Traded to New England. If there is no trade, here is my pick: Marcus Gilbert, OT. He is an interesting prospect at RT. He has a lot of natural talent, but his technique could use some work. He's also versatile enough to play OG.
Round 6 (#174 overall): Jeremy Beal, OLB. He has great technique and is very smart on the field. The Dolphins will love him being that he was a great leader at OU. He does lack great speed for an OLB, but he will still provide good depth at the position.
Round 7 (#205 overall): Ryan Bartholomew, C. Strictly a project at this point, he will help push Joe Berger for a roster spot. Kristofer O'Dowd is a better project at center, but I don't think he'll be available here.
Round 7 (#206 overall): Greg Little, WR. He is a little bit of an unknown out of college. He converted to WR in 2009 after playing as a RB. He was suspended for 2010 so his skills are a bit of a mystery. He has good height (6'3) and weight (231) for a WR. With great speed, vision, and return capabilities, I think Miami would like to take a chance at this point. He could be used in some trick package Miami may like to run. He does have a lot of character problems. He's been reported to be "less than honest" in team interviews so his stock is likely in a free fall. Still, if he is able to turn it around, he does have the skill to make it in the NFL. Being that the pick is so late in the draft, I would be willing to take the chance on a problem child such as Little.
Now, here are some free agency projections.
Offensive Line: Sorry, but Carl Nicks, Logan Mankins, Davin Joseph, or even Justin Blalock will not be playing LG for Miami in 2011. All of the players received RFA tenders and I am thinking the 6-year RFA rule will stick in 2011. Instead, I expect Miami to make small moves on the interior such as resigning Nate Garner. There just aren't any upgrades Miami can make on the free agent market on the line.
Other signings and deals:
Sam Hurd, WR: He is an interesting player at WR. He has a lot of talent, but he comes from a roster where he always had problems climbing up the crowded depth chart. He comes from the Cowboys so Ireland is familiar with him.
Carson Palmer, QB:He can probably be had for a conditional 4th rounder in 2012. Sparano and Ireland may not like giving up 2 draft picks in 2012, but with their jobs on the line in 2011, they will probably be willing to take more risks. He would be amentor for both Henne and Ponder while serving a few seasons as a starter. This would leave the Dolphins QB position crowded with Henne, Ponder, Palmer, and Thigpen. This is exactly what the front office would like though.
Ronnie Brown, RB: I don't think he'll have much of a market outside Miami so I think there is a pretty good chance he comes back to tandem up with someone like Ingram.
There are of course other moves to be made, but these are ones I think could be the most notable. The Dolphins can fill a lot of needs with these type of moves andjust as importantly, build depth at other positions. Now have at it and tear up my opinions!

Good stab at it
I like the trading down part, but I have to admit I’m on the “Lower Round RB Bandwagon”. Although some of these upper tier guys are amazing, I can’t stand how much they tend to get hurt. Especially at RB. But I will give it to you that if Ingram is the pick, and our O Line troubles are shored up in-house, then it will juice up the running game.
I also like your 3rd rounder but I hate any business done with the Patsies other than handing them an “L”.

RBs in the 1st
I’m not big on RBs in thr first round either, but I think Ingram is a good value at the end of the round. While there are other options at RB in the later rounds, none of them are definite starting material. Ingram at least presents himself to be a good value and a safer pick. Consider that both Brown and Williams leave and RBs like DeAngelo Williams and Bradshaw are not available due to RFA, how would you feel about the RB situation if Miami ends up with DeMarco Murray, Lex Hilliard, and Kory Sheets? There is no guarantee one of the RBs in the later rounds won’t be picked before Miami has their chance. At least if Miami aims for Ingram at the end of the 1st and misses, they still have other options like LeShoure. If they choose a different direction, they can plan to adjust for the 2nd or 3rd round to make sure they get their next targeted RB.
That being said, I think Miami can be fine with Pouncey (if available) at the end of the 1st round if they pick up a solid RB in the 2nd or 3rd. I would like that even better if Brown resigned to platoon with the mid-round RB.
Ideally, I also wouldn’t mind Miami staying still for someone like Julio Jones if they fell, but I don’t think he is high on their list of needs and probably wouldn’t go to Miami. Yes, Dallas is looking to trade their #9 overall choice, but then Miami would be gambling a lot to move up and get Jones if they were enamored with him.

The more i look and look, and think about what Henne said, about the playbook mirroring a bit of both the Pats and Jets...
The more I see us going all out speed with this draft. Perhaps switching to a spread the likes of new England, with a bit of new yorks power run game.
That being said,I think wed likely see a Troy Smith,or a VY before Palmer, depending on who our Back iswe may need a QB that can sell the 4-5 yard run on a regular basis.
Its what also makes me think well establish the Oline and pass attack this year, and by pass attack,I don’t mean QB,I mean the addition of a speedy reciever, and a tight end that could very well play first string ahead of Fasano,as opposed tocomplimenting him

If the Fins do have the 15th pick after all is said and done
(In other words, no one will trade down with them), then an offensive lineman (Carimi, Pouncey, of whatshisname) would be the best. After that, a QB (hopefully a second rounder can be had, and Ponder is still available), then a TE, then a RB or two later. I’d also like a speedy WR but I have a feeling one can be had as a free agent.
Except for Gabbert, there really are no sure-fire first rounders in this draft…

Even though I like most of your picks I don’t think there’s a chance Ponder will go that late. 10 teams need a QB. He’s one of the (if not the most ready) day 1 QB of this class. If he slips to the second demand for him will be high.

Play to win
Maybe
A lot of people tend to place QBs too high in the draft. Remember, people thought Clausen would be gone in the top 15 last year as well. Look how far he fell. There are always QB needy teams out there, but there are rarely more than 2 or 3 QBs taken in the first, if that many at all. With Gabbert, Newton, Locker, and Mallett, Ponder definitely has room to slip.

You share basically all of my viewpoints. I especially liked the pick of Ingram at 29. If he’s available there he’s a steal. After that, Orlando Franklin and Kyle Rudolph are exactly the type of guys i’d target. I’ve been high on Torrey Smith but recently have begun to feel like Kyle Rudolph (upgrading Haynos/Nalbone/Epps/Shuler) is more of an upgrade than Torrey Smith would be over Hartline.
As far as the rest of the draft goes, Ponder in the late second would be another steal. Unfortunately, I don’t think he lasts that long. I like the Moffitt pick in round three, but I think that if Ponder isn’t available in the second round the Dolphins should target one of the many talented guards/tackles that will be available in the second. For example, Orlando Franklin could be around.
Sam Hurd in free agency is interesting. He possesses elite speed and could become a valuable weapon for the Dolphins. You’re right about him being buried on the depth chart of the Cowboys. Carson Palmer would serve his purpose well in Miami, but there’s a good chance he returns to Cincinnatti.
Overall, a great writeup and I hope that this scenario (or a similar one) plays out!

I like your thinking on this. Only change I might suggest is we get their 3rd string QB as part of the deal with D’Bears. Caleb Hanie is someone I think could go a long way in the NFL, and I’d love to see him playing for the Phins.
BEST IDEA
Loved what I saw from him. He has good instincts, cuz it was obvious he didn’t know the bears offense that well.
That being said, I don’t see the bears gettin rid of him.
I like it.

Don't trade a 2nd and 5th for a 3rd. That isn't good manuveuring by Miami.
Not enough Line Depth in this draft. Wee need to also draft an OT.

OT
I’d like Miami to go for another OT as well, but I think they can go with Garner and Murtha if need be as backups. I wouldn’t mind if they get one in the later rounds of the draft though. There were just better prospects I think will be there in the later rounds at other positions, but I’m not too big on any OT prospects after round 5.

We can't rely on Garner to backup every position.
Because if there is an injury to the interior Line (with this draft) we have no depth anywhere but Murtha and the rookie C.

Garner
We still have Murtha for OTs and Berger for C/G. Plus resigning McQuistan would be cheap. Assuming this would work out, Miami would could have Jerry and Moffitt as the starting OGs, leaving Berger, Garner, McQuistan and Procter in the interior.

McQuistan
He is also a versatile OL that can play OT as well, allowing Miami to be pretty flexible with the unit.

McFAIL needs to go.
He isn’t good depth because his talent is soooooo far below every other starter that he will be a huge liability.

I agree Pot!
I want to start making trades that favor us like the Pats not to the Pats.

Completely Agree
I just think that given the hot seat Sparano, and possibly Ireland, are on I don’t see them trying to stock up on picks in 2012. Plus Miami has a bit of needs they need to address. The Pats have been successful trading for future picks because they’ve consistently had a solid roster. We need to improve the talent on the team before we can do what the Pats do. Otherwise we’ll basically be sacrificing a few seasons to score a big draft.

But you need draft picks to build that roster.

We could do it without acquiring many more picks
We just need to be smart with the players we draft. We can’t have huge flops in the top 3 rounds like Ginn, White, Satele, and Turner.

But you also have to play the odds to some degree. Not every pick is going to hit no matter how good your front office is.

I really think this would be a great draft for the Phins.
Drafting Ingram is a good choice, because if we re-sign Ronnie, he could be an excellent mentor. Christian Ponder is a guy I take great interest in, so I really like that pick. All the additions to the O-line could help greatly, Im also a fan of DJ Williams, so I like that pick (we need that pick, Fasano isnt gonna cut it). I also like signing Carson Palmer, decent guy with good experience. Nice job.
