Trade Bait

Sources in Cleveland announced today that they will be relesing DT Shaun Rogers today. And if our FO has any sense, they would pounce and sign him ASAP. This would benefit us on a few levels. First off, he is a beast DT, second, it improves our special teams. (How many FGS has this guy blocked?) Hell, he blocked one of ours this year and last year I believe he blocked 2 in one game. And finally, this would free up some trade bait since our D-line is our deepest unit. It would help in our pursuit of another QB or speed WR, all the while strengthening our already stout defense. This one simple move would tremendously help our franchise on several levels.

Shaun Rogers is a great talent

But I’m not sure if I want him because he’s been battling injuries and is on the backhand of his career (31 years old). He would also be pretty expensive, probably asking for around 5 million a year. The better option would to be to sign Soliai to a long term deal for about 6 to 8 million a year for 5 years. Add a couple clauses, like go to OTAs, keep a certain weight, and a certain amount of games started for him to get the full money. That way we keep him playing.

I bet you almost every high paid contract has clauses like that

Just look at Asmougha. He didn’t get enough starts or interceptions so his contract was voided due to clauses in his contract. Nuff said.

Age

31 years old isn’t too bad for an offensive or defensive lineman. Even when they get old, they still are space-eaters that frees up our linebackers to make plays.

NT when u can get a perfectly healthy young one in soliai that proved himself for us last season while rogers was fighting for starting team

im sorry, but paying Solai 6-8 mil for one good contract year would be a dumb move

First off, let’s let reality set in for a second. Marshall is set to make 9 mil next season,Jake long is looking at 10-11 mil,Dansby is another 6.

Okay, next, you want to fix Oline. How much coin do you think a stud guard,or center will cost?

7-8 mil for a premiere guard,5 mil for a premier center, not to mention, careys contract is actually around 6 mil. Where are we going to get the money to upgrade our offense with the oline and runningbacks and qb and te the team needs?

Personally,I think some of our current contracts need restructuring before we can talk about paying millions to what amounts to a one year wonder

by dolphinfan4lyfe on Feb 10, 2011 8:30 AM EST via mobile reply actions

You're right

And while I would hate to pay a one year wonder 6-8 mil I don’t think this is the same thing.

Soliai has steadily progressed every year and while ppl were calling him inadequate Sparano kept saying he was about to turn the corner, physically and mentally, and he did,the contract year is just coincidence IMO but if I still had reservations I would just tag him because we can’t afford to let him walk and watch him get even better so the tag would allow us to watch him another year before commiting for several years.

i might be willing to do a 3 yr/9-11 mi, but nothing more.

No

Rogers is the last type of player this team needs - underperformer, overpaid. He’s a junior Haynesworth.

We need to build through the draft and add 1 or 2 pieces through free agency each year. The teams that succeed build mainly through the draft with a couple of key FA’s. Look at Green Bay — that team was built through the draft, and the Steelers were built the same way.

Nobody hurt a tackler like Zonk did.

by rintintinsoldier on Feb 10, 2011 11:40 AM EST reply actions

Yes

I think at this point we almost have to assume Soliai is leaving (man i hope he doesn’t). Who is his current replacement? Either 1) Starks who is 50 lbs lighter and didn’t really impact at NT early in the year, or 2) Chris Baker who had 0 takles last year.

Ummmm, i’m no expert but that seems like an enormous risk to our entire defense. Adding a vet like Rogers would solve a lot of problems early on…

by mtclifford on Feb 10, 2011 3:05 PM EST reply actions

I don't understand how people think Starks wasn't good at NT.

The guy had 2 passes defensed and a sack in two starts. We only allowed 10 points in each of those games… He is a QB Pressure NT, not a run-stopper. With Channing in to back him up on the run, he would have looked even better. The man is a beast.

We will wait and see, if Soli will sign for a decent price we will keep him, if he wants a ton

of money we will let him walk and maybe look for the 2 year wonder till we find a replacemant. That is how this front office works and I agree with it, if you wanna stay with this team you will , but if your only worried about money we will let you walk. Most players fall after the hit the market for big money and they get lazy!!

We need to make sure we sign Soliai to a deal

Right now, we have too many needs on offense (RB,OLine,WR,TE,QB) and maybe a couple on defense (Lb, extra CB) to have another need in NT. And there isn’t better options out there than Solai that is going to be cheaper. Run defense was top 5 last year. If its not broke don’t fix it. We should have learned this last year from fixing our o-line.

There is no debate. You all are missing the point of the post. I also want to resign Solai. My point is by signing Rogers, we add more depth and we could trade Mcdaniels or Odrick or both for a second round pick or someone like Orton. Understand ?

by miamimike71 on Feb 11, 2011 4:27 PM EST reply actions

we know what you're trying to say

But there isn’t much logic to it. Soliai showed how important he was to us last year. So why get rid of him for an aging NT who has health concerns when you can resign a NT for just a couple more million. Mcdaniel is a free agent and why would we trade last years 1st round pick for a 2nd round pick. Just pay the man around 5-6 million per year and be set at the position for 5 years

You still don't get it

im saying resign solai and sign Rogers. Then trade odrick because even though we picked him in the first round, he isn’t proven yet and we still have trade value. Plus the contracts would cancel out each other.

by miamimike71 on Feb 11, 2011 8:47 PM EST up reply actions

Also

also to add to that- our defense was just fine without him.

by miamimike71 on Feb 11, 2011 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

I don't see the point in picking up depth at NT

and then sacrificing depth at DE. We already have depth in Starks at both positions, there really isn’t any point in grabbing this guy except for ST.

Trade

He is a first round pick who has yet to play and he could be traded to acquire a second round pick or a package deal for someone like orton. Since he is still young and hasn’t played yet, he still will have trade value. Use a little common sense instead of trying to make a joke of things.

by miamimike71 on Feb 11, 2011 10:32 PM EST up reply actions

We have no leverage

He’s a 2nd year player who was injured in week one. He would not bring a second round pick straight up. Any team we would try to trade with would think a) we see him as an injury risk and thus wouldn’t be willing to give up just a high pick or b) he’s a failed prospect and wouldn’t be worth a second round pick.

We could make him part of a package deal, but why would we get rid of him so quickly? We will probably not resign McDaniel meaning we need Odrick for depth. I don’t thinking trading him is a wise move. We could move other pieces in a package deal.

i agree it would have to be a package deal but your not reading the post. Signing sola and Rogers is your depth and an upgrade.

You know how much money it would be for both of them???

Plus why would we do it when we play a 3-4 and only one is going to be playing while both will be paid starter money. And you want to trade a first round pick we just got in a package deal. Who would accept that offer? Who would be in your package, also?

Trade

Dt and de are interchangeable in a 3-4 scheme. Rogers at nose, Starks and solai at de. And Langford and merling in the rotation. As far as a package deal odrick, sapp, and a 3rd round pick for orton or whoever.

Soliai is a NT in a 3-4 or a DT in a 4-3

he is not a DE in a 3-4 scheme.

Why would I use common sense regarding a positively random thought posted in the FanPosts?
You say “sources in Cleveland?” Fine. Link them.
You then rag other comments that try to argue (logically) against your point.
And finally, Mike, You previously posted that that tried using FanShots but they didn’t work, yet you were able to figure out how to edit a FanShot.

I THINK THE F.O. WANTED DT WILLIAMS

They thought he wasn’t “worth it” at their current pick so they played around and went backwards but when he was taken before their pick, they “settled” for Odrick. I DO NOT believe that Odrick was number 1 on their best player list. That’s MY opinion.

Solai – SIGN HIM. There aren’t any available. He’s young and hungry. I don’t believe he “Saved” himself for the contract year. Those of you with thorough knowledge of the game, look it up for me and the others – he wasn’t playing starting every single game since he’s been here. He was brought along slowly.

If you play 5 minutes in a game, how much can you except just hold you own until the starter returns. I think he has blossomed into a fantastic NT and if he’s told to try the waters, I’m telling you – he’s gone in 7 seconds. Some players take a few years to develop and find themselves and we FINALLY have our NT and the F.O. wants to play games? I don’t get it.

Give him a contract WITH CLAUSES (like everyone else) with a gradual increase in salary each year. Standard $3M, you make improvements $4M, etc.

Again, that’s my feeling. Anyone agree (disagree) – please, go right ahead.

by Cutie on Feb 12, 2011 1:05 PM EST reply actions

Not sure but my understanding is that we could only give him a 30% raise

now and both sides know he’s worth more than that and would be an insult to him so I think they have to wait-thats my understanding anyway.

The FO wasn't necessarily targeting Odrick.

They said Misi was their main target in that draft, which is why they traded back in the first place. Odrick was just BPA on their list.
