Fins Mock Draft
I don't remember if Matty said anything about posting all 2011 mocks on Mocking the Draft. If he did, oh well. It's going here because it's for Dolfans. If he didn't, alright! So, I present a 7-round mock draft for the Miami Dolphins:
Round 1 (trade down): Torrey Smith, WR/KR, Maryland. I don't know who we'll trade down with, or for what. But it's going to be for a later first and a second-rounder somehow. Just ask Jeff Ireland. Anyway, Torrey Smith can replace what we traded in Ted Ginn: an explosive return man that can stretch the field deep. While he's raw as a route-runner, he can develop alongside two of the better route-runners in the game: Brandon Marshall and Davone Bess. Plus, he's bigger than Ginn was, so he SHOULD be able to take hits over the middle and hold on. But if we're using him that way, that's not good. He should run vertical routes; give us somebody to throw to off the play-action.
Round 2 (from trade): Christian Ponder, QB, FSU. From what I've read, and what I've seen of him, he's an excellent quarterback that was hampered by injuries his senior year. But at the Senior Bowl, several scouts reported spinning a clean football, making all the throws. He's also mobile, a plus behind our haphazard o-line. Finally, this should pacify most of the Dolfans calling for a new QB. If Stephen Ross wants to put butts in the seats like I think he does, then he's going to at least try to convince Ireland and Sparano to get a new QB. What better way to do so than a Florida kid?
Round 3: Greg Little, WR, North Carolina. A former running back who moved to wide receiver and promptly became North Carolina's number 1 wideout. Suspended for the entirety of his senior season, he enters the draft process flying under the radar. At 6'2" and 220 pounds, he's got running back size and the burst and body control that comes with it. He's still developing as a receiver, but he has shown an ability for the spectacular catch and can create yards after the catch by himself. Lining up Marshall-Smith-Bess-Little-Hartline as a receiving corps would drive defensive coordinators insane.
Round 4: Bilal Powell, HB, Louisville. A running back that didn't make much of an impact until his senior year, when he came out of nowhere to post this statline: 229 carries, 1405 yards, 11 TD rushing (counting bowl game). 18 catches, 153 yards, 3 TD receiving (again counting bowl game). I've watched him on TV and seen him in person. He creates his own yards (see his big run against Cincinnati). He keeps his legs driving through contact. He's a fluid receiver out of the backfield and split out wide. He can contribute immediately in a rotation and possibly become a starter.
Round 5: Taiwan Jones, HB, Eastern Washington. Who? might be the first question when you see this guy's name. But this runner made a huge impact at the FCS level.
2009: 162 carries, 1213 yards, 15 TD rushing. 40 catches, 561 yards, 4 TD receiving.
2010: 221 carries, 1742 yards, 14 TD rushing. 24 catches, 342 yards, 3 TD receiving.
He declared for the draft and he's projected somewhere around the 4th-5th rounds. I think he'll fall to the 5th because he has an injury history. But as he's shown, he's a major player when at full speed. Could complement Bilal and whoever else we have nicely as a 3rd-down/change-of-pace type. Note: To all Kory Sheets fans, he's recovering from an Achilles injury. Who knows when (or if) his speed, burst, and agility will return as they were? So take the flier on the guy in the 5th.
Round 6: Justin Boren, OG, Ohio State. The starting left guard after a highly-publicized transfer from Michigan. A powerful run-blocker with just enough agility to pass-protect. At best, he can start and make a positive impact. At worst, he provides depth. We need both on the o-line.
Round 7: Julius Thomas, TE, Portland State. A small-school guy with the measurables. 6'5", 251 pounds. 4.75 40 yard dash. He caught a touchdown and a 2-pt conversion in the East-West Shrine Game, showing off his leaping ability and hands. And in the 7th round, a team would look for diamonds in the rough. This guy could be one of them. He's a receiver that would complement Fasano well.
Round 7: Ray Dominguez, OG, Arkansas. Started at right tackle for the Razorbacks. Got blown away by speed rushers, but moved inside to guard during the Senior Bowl and apparently did well enough to get his name into draft consideration. He'd be a pile-mover at guard. He also has the ability to pull and block out on the second level, which this team missed when Justin Smiley went down and eventually kicked out of town. Same as Boren: at best starter, at worst depth.

i like torrey smith...
But not in the first round…I think we draft either rb, qb, or offensive linemen with the first pick even if we trade down…I believe we can get him in the 2nd, if we acquire one, and I do not believe they will go wr with two of their first three picks, especially with so many other needs.
Where is Oronde Gadsden when we need him?

With good RB available in the 3rd round I would be surprised if we draft a RB
in the 1st round……. MAYBE Ingram if we trade down to the bottom of the 1st but still don`t see it.
On the "get Jake Locker in the draft no matter what it takes" bandwagon
not bad but dont like Ponder that early , I think there are better ones out there that will still be around.
LIFE IS A GARDEN YOU HAVE TO DIG IT
STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!!
Think Hard Real Hard Before You Type
I'm Sorry but I disagree with this draft
1. There is just as good speed Wr prospects later in the 2nd round (Titus Young, Jernigan). We have bigger needs that could go towards this pick (O-line, QB)
2. This team doesn’t have time right now to draft a QB who still needs to develop and has an injury history. If they go for a QB, expect Mallet late in the first or staying at 15 if Newton somehow falls down. I actually wouldn’t mind trading up for Newton with Vikings to get Newton before Redskins. The super bowl showed how valuable the position is.
3. Why are you going after another WR after you chose one in the 1st? WR isn’t that big of a need right now. We just need a speedy WR
4. Don’t mind the Powell pick, but I think he might be available in the 5th or even 6th.
5. Don’t understand why we’re going after a RB with an injury history that has the same injury as one of the Dolphins on the roster. 5th round pick is too valuable for a risky pick like this who hasn’t gone against top defenses.
6. O-line was one of the weakest parts of this team last year, but we’re not going to address it until the 6th round. At worst, I see 4th.
7. We already have 3 developing rookie TEs in Epps, Mastrud, and Shuler. Don’t see us getting another one unless it is a top prospect like DJ Williams or Luke Stocker.
7. Don’t mind Dominguez pick for depth.
On the "Draft Titus Young" Bandwagon
Why do people like Ryan Williams more than Leshoure. Leshoure bigger and not as injury prone.
Titus young will probably be there
in the 1st, not not the second.

Like the Torrey Smith pick
However whether he is going to go that early will depend on his combine performance so maybe we take him in round 2.
-Round 2 (Ponder): If you want a younger Chad Pennington (Right down to the injury history) then fine. Personally, I don’t want another Chad Pennington because there really isn’t one. CP10 is one of the smartest, most savvy QBs to ever play in the NFL and nobody (Especially in this draft/free agency class) will EVER duplicate his performance in 2008. Seriously though, we’ve spent over a decade trying to find the next Dan Marino and failed so now we’re gonna start the search for the next Chad Pennington? No thanks. Dalton or nobody in this draft. Look to next year’s draft if needed and get Luck or Landrey Jones. As for me, I’ll take Daniel Thomas or Rob Housler (If their stock gets this high) or Marcus Cannon (OT/OG-TCU) here. IF we take Cannon, either he or Vernon Carey is likely playing RG next season and the other helms the RT position.
Round 3 (Greg Little): After aquiring Torrey Smith, this pick becomes all but completely worthless for 2 reasons. #1, Greg Little is very similar to Roberto Wallace in that he has upside (More than Wallace I do confess) but still needs some work. Why waste a round 3 pick for a 5th WR in a 5 WR set especially when you have 2 just as capable guys already on the squad? Pretty much EVERY WR in the NFL is capable of being a fifth WR in a 5-wide.
#2, this pick can be used on Rob Housler (TE-Florida Atlantic). How good is Housler? Well first off Howard F’in Schnellenberger will vouch for the kid and that carries moer weight for me than anything Sparano or Ireland would say. He is a family man (Married with a kid and no character flaws to speak of), he is 6-6 249 and runs a 4.56 to 4.59 40yd dash and has great hands and overall athleticism. His blocking needs some work but if you are looking for a fifth WR, why not use a freakishly athletic TE instead of carrying 5 WRs on the gameday roster? Just to point out that Greg Little runs a 4.56 40 time so the flat speed is even but Housler is 4 inches taller and doesn’t eat an extra roster spot to take 4-10 snaps a game and Housler has special teams experience. It should be noted that he has jumped from the #7 ranked TE in this years draft on NFLDraftScout.com to #5 just in the last 6 hours and he has received a combine invite so his stock may just go even higher making him a round 2 pick instead. Also he is a Texas boy so football has been like a first language to him all of his life.
Round 4 (Bilal Powell): Liking it but I would like to see how he performs at the combine to gauge his recovery following the knee injury though he looked pretty solid at the senior bowl. If Shane Vereen is still around I would take him over Powell but I don’t anticipate that happening. There are other options but I won’t go that far until after the combine.
As for Rounds 5-7, we need to fill depth questions so no TEs, WRs, LBs (Unless ILB to replace Crowder) and no QBs. Mostly O-Line here to push for backup roles and eliminate the journeymen eating up roster space.

ENOUGH
With Dalton, he’s never been that great and has played with one of, if not the best, college defenses every year for the past 4 seasons. He played in a junk offense in TCU and looked pretty poor at the senior bowl.
Go A's!!!
And Ponder is an oft-injured short thrower, Locker has the footwork of a 300lb white guy, Newton has played well for one season but is gimicky too, Gabbert will be gone, Mallett is a taller version of Henne, Kaepernick needs work, Devlin = weak arm, etc.
Dalton played with a great defense
Not Dalton’s fault
Dalton played in a junk offenseWhat do you call Mizzou, Auburn, Nevada and to a lesser extent Arkansas?
My question would be who do you want and why? My answer is none of the above because Andrew Luck, Landry Jone, and Matt Barkley (Maybe) are better than every QB in this class.

Exactly
I DO NOT WANT a QB in this draft at all. I’m very high on Landry Jones and Barkley wouldn’t be a bad consolation to him next year (assuming Luck doesn’t forget how to play football and kill his draft stock)
Go A's!!!
Got one more for you.
Case Keenum.
I know he is the QB for University of Houston but the kid has some chops. 68.8 comp%, 13586 yds (315 yds/game), 107 TDs – 41 INTs105.1 NFL QB Rating.
About to enter his 6TH year of eligibility (Yeah this guy has experience, 43 games so far!)
Best part is he likely won’t require a 1st round draft pick to get (In case we can’t get Luck, Brantley, or Jones).

You mean the kid that would have you believe he could practically hit a dime in the middle of the 0 at the 40 yard line from the opposite end zone but can't get beyond 3rd string at UCONN?
Impossible to gauge the kid at this time since he floats so many of his trick shot passes (Many of which are fakeable with ease) but he has not one stat in a game at the collegiate level at this time so keep your eye on him beav but don’t get to excited waiting for the next great phenom to blossom.
By the time he gets out of UCONN we will hopefully not need a QB.

In the 4th I like Locke from UK or D. Evans from V. Tech
Locke is a small guy, yes, but extremely fast and actually has pop at the POA. Locke is your ideal speedster because he doesn’t fear contact, but rather he can create it.
Evans had an amazing freshman year in college, but was injured and Williams took over and never looked back. Depending on how well Evans does at the combine he will either be taken in the 4th or 5th.

Ooh, Torrey Smith's a pretty sick prospect
And Ponder claims he’s 100 percent right now, so it’ll be interesting to see how he looks in workouts during the next three months.
Anyone familiar with Randall Cobb? HE is the speedster this team needs. I am not sure where his stock will end up at, but just youtube his highlights and prepare to be floored by his blitzkrieg-ass speed. He has experience in the Wildcat, too (just in case Daboll feels like beating that horse a little longer).
Trade down and nab Ryan Mallett? We can build on this. If so, Wisniewski in the second round, please
I've never won a Matty, so I'll give myself the "Classic Marino BALLS" award. Thanks to all who voted for me
Cobb
Would be an excellent addition, great point. I am also very intrigued with Ponder. A good combine and he shoots up over Locker IMO
Go A's!!!
Cobb
Cobb is a guy whose stock is rising quickly, probably higher than Miami would like to spend on a slot-receiver-sized guy. I’d love him on the team if we could get him somehow.

so whats the point of having a deep threat if you draft a guy who has possibly the worst arm strength in ponder???
by west coast phinfan on Feb 8, 2011 12:56 AM EST via mobile reply actions
Ponder
Are you talking about his entire college career, or did you only see his senior year? Senior year he was dealing with elbow and forearm injuries (maybe it was his shoulder), robbing him of his arm strength. But it looks like he’s back now, so we’ll see. Torrey Smith is the first back because somebody needs to blow the top off of the defense and take double coverage away from Marshall.

If we draft a QB...
I’d consider a guy like Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick who will be available in later rounds. Kaepernick has ideal size for a QB at 6’6, 225 pounds, he always seems to find a way to score either with his arm or his feet (he passed for 10,098 yards, 82 TDs and 24 INTs while rushing for 4,112 yards and 59 TDs in 4 seasons) and he is a winner (Kaepernick led Nevada to 4 consecutive bowl games). He needs to work on his footwork (he played out of the pistol offense (shotgun with the RB lined up behind the QB) for his entire career at Nevada) and he needs to work on his pocket presence (he has a tendency to scramble too early). He is a raw prospect, but he definitely has tremendous upside. I’d say we could probably pick him up in the 4th to 5th round.
Other QBs to look at are Ricky Stanzi out of Iowa or Jerrod Johnson out of Texas A&M.
I am intruiged by Kaepernick
but he won`t be available in the 4th or 5th round, I have seen him listed as a mid round 2nd-3rd round prospect (BTW I also read the Dolphins really liked him in the Senior Bowl).
On the "get Jake Locker in the draft no matter what it takes" bandwagon
Very interesting
Thanks for the thought and research.

A few comments...
While I think it is a bit early to take Torrey Smith, I am ok with the pick (Titus Young is another late 1st option). Where I take issue is in the 2nd and 3rd round. I honestly do not see the advantage of taking 2 WR’s early when we have so many other holes. I mean, Hartline would be a damn good 4th receiver so I don’t see the need for Little in this senerio. Personally, I would have gone with the best lineman in the 2nd and taken Ponder in the 3rd (2nd is too early). With that being said, I don’t think Ponder will be the answer and we will be wasting another 2 years with him as our QB of the future. In the 5th, Taiwon Jones could be a good option (I do not know anything about him), but I think I would rather go after Jacquizz Rodgers.

Mark my words. Ponder will enter the draft as a round 1 or 2 guy and will likely get picked before 1 of the big 4 of Gabbert, Newton, Mallet and Locker

Very possible
I have seen Mallett and Locker drop to the 3rd round in a few mock drafts.

if Ponder stays healthy i think he can make immediate contribution
I’d look at him late round 2 or in round 3 if he’s still on the board

the big knock on him is his arm strength and health if he proves he can throw deep with velocity he's gonna move up fast!

Greg Little is S-L-O-W
I am in the Raliegh area so I can only tell you the local legend on Gregg Little. He is projected to run about a 4.7-4.8 40yd dash. This is coming from Tar Heel fans which makes me believe they shaved time off just to make him sound better. With a year out of football due to suspension I would have to give Little an undrafted free agent label especially if his 40 time is as advertised.
If that's true
then he would be a UDFA. Otherwise, he seems like a good pick in Round 3. But that 40 needs to be cleared up. Guess the Underwear Olympics and Pro Day will tell us.
Touchdown, Ronnie Brown Edition!
I just fell in love with Torrey Smith
Here are a couple of excerpts from the new ESPN Insider report on Smith:
In regards to intangibles:
Overcame a tough upbringing. Oldest of seven siblings to a single mother (Monica) and took on the role of a father figure at the age of seven. Humble, respectful and a person of great integrity. Coaches rave about his character and approach to life. Very mature individual who had to grow up early in life. NFL stage will not be too big for him and should have no problems making the transition. Solid work ethic.
In regards to “big play ability”:
Potential to be a big time play maker at the next level. Possesses the initial burst and second gear to rip the lid off of defenses. Displays a rare acceleration to make up ground and run underneath deep ball. Will be very hard to overthrow him. Lacks elite elusiveness to get out of traffic in and out of traffic. However, dangerous runner after the catch that flashes ability to take short throw and exploit any crease to create big run after catch. Also can win one-on-one battles with deep throws or in jump ball situations.
In both of these categories he is rated a “1” which is “exceptional”. He is 6"0 202 just like Roddy White. He is already being compared to White and IMO he would be a great pick in the late first or early second round. ESPECIALLY if he comes out to the combine and runs a good 40 time.
