Assesing recent FA activity at Safety.

First off id like to say this post is not any kind of attack on the play of Chris Clemons. Chris Clemons had his share of struggles this season, as was to be expected from such a young player in his first full season as a starter, but as a whole when assesing his body of work the positives far outweigh the negatives. I could talk about Chris Clemons all day but again that isnt the point of this post. This post is about recent FA activity at the safety position, thoughts on the moves, and isnt even limited to the FS position. What has happened at the position and thoughts on the moves. Now with that said lets get to it.

Star-divide

Indianapolis Colts release Bob Sanders: In 2007 Sanders signed a 5 year 37.5 million dollar deal in Indy, making him at the time the highest paid safety in the league. Bob Sanders hadnt been able to stay healthy throughout the 2006 season, playing in stints through the year but reaggravating injuries that plagued him until the regular season finale. In the postseason though Bob Sanders return on Defense was instantly seen. The 32nd ranked rush defense in the league smothered The Kansas City Cheifs vicious dual rushing attack of Larry Johnson and Michael Bennett. This amazing storyline helped carry the Colts to a Superbowl win and in the offseason Sanders inked this deal. Since signing it Bob Sanders has remained one of the elite safeties in the league when healthy, but has simply missed too much action. Old injuries continue to reappear as well as new ones that continue to surface. After having what Bob Sanders called one of his best camps ever he tore his right bicep tendon in Week one against Houston and was placed on IR on the 8th of December. Since Sanders came into the league he has played in 48 games but has missed 64, and in the last three years has only played in 9 regular season games. As Indy reporter Mike Chappell points out "It is conceivable that Sanders at 30 signs a minimum salary deal with the Colts after being cut, but its more likely that another team will be willing to offer a better oppurtunity".

Update: Feb. 22- Bob Sanders meets with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Buffalo Bills.

Update:March 4th Bob Sanders signs 1 year deal with The Chargers.

St. Louis Rams release O.J. Atogwe: This is far more interesting to us than the Bob Sanders move. In 2009 The Dolphins showed alot of interest in Atogwe as he hit the market. Ultimately Atogwe was designated the Franchise Tag and The Dolphins inked Gibril Wilson to a 5 year 27.5 million dollar deal with 8 million in gaurantees. After a dissapointing 2009 outing Wilson was cut and The Dolphins again showed interest in Atogwe. Ultimately Chris Clemons became our starter, we drafted Reshad Jones and Atogwe signed a 5 year 32 million dollar deal with The Rams. So the specualation begins again. Why was such a talented player as Atogwe cut? Well today on Friday feb. 19th he was due 8 million in bonuses. Last season statistically speaking he didnt have as productive a season as some his years from 2007 onward, but there are obviously several factors attributing to this, one of which is the injury he was coming off of. When i watch The Rams play i see a really good player in Atogwe. His awareness is excellent, he breaks down his takles and doesnt look for 'kill shots", hes disciplined and smart and has great hands. Where do you guys think he will land? And for what kind of money?

Update:March 4th O.J. Atogwe signs with The Redskins 5 years/26 Million.

Houston Texans cut Eugene Wilson: This isnt much of a surprise. Eugene Wilson last season was constantly burnt in coverage, he has lost speed with age and his technique is deteriorating. He was benched even benched last season and pushed back into the starting lineup due to injuries. Wilson was a major liability on one of the worst secondaries in the league.

Atlanta Falcons cut Erik Coleman/signed by Detroit Lions: I was alittle surprised when Coleman got cut by the Falcons, he was only set to make 3 million in 2011 and is a solid player especially in rotation. he had lost his starting job in Atlanta in 2010, but continued to play well in his role. I thought he would be picked up quickly and he was. The Detroit Lions signed Erik Coleman to a 1 year deal, a move i think will help their secondary moving forward. Any thoughts on the Erik Coleman situation? Id like to hear you guys opinions there as well.

Safeties

Coleman was a solid player for the Falcons, but with the emergence of their young guns in William Moore and Thomas DeCoud, his time was numbered. Detroit needs a FS way more than we do, so they picked him up.

Sanders would only be good at the right price, which I don’t think he’ll play at. Plus if he’s injured, then we’re right back to Clemons.

Atogwe is extremely interesting. He’s a free agent; I’d argue that he’s the one the Fins should go get. He’s been dealing with injuries the past few seasons, but not to the Bob Sanders level. He is a playmaker. If I pick one safety from this FA class, it’s Atogwe.

Hope this helps

Sanders only if he's cheap

Which I doubt he will be. Atogwe would be the best option.

I made it well known

last year that I was a big fan of us picking up Atogwe. I get to see him all the time living in St. Louis, and he is a great free safety. Even playing on a Rams defense that has been pretty horrible the last few years (last season not included), Atogwe was putting up some pretty good numbers in terms of Ints, FFs, and has always had good awareness in coverage. While I don’t think that Clemons played poorly, I think that picking up Atogwe would only improve our secondary, and could also help out Clemons’ development as he could learn from Atogwe.

Would Atogwe teach Clemons though?

Yeah, he's reportedly been

a very good guy with the younger members of the Rams defense. Helping them out with learning stuff and adapting. From what we hear around here he’s about the furthest from a “me” type player that we can get.

He's Canadian...he's compelled to be a nice guy.

He’ll also be polite while doing it.

In all seriousness…OJ A would really help us. He’s really smart and an un-Godly athlete.

But if his acquisition delays Clemons and Jones's progression it won't be worth it.

I think the Packers proved in the SB that you can never have too much depth.

We would have the deepest secondary in the league…worth the risk in my mind

Not depth, but you don't want to set the development timeline back.

We aren’t going to be in the AFCCG next year let alone the SB.

If you have already written the year off and decided it's going to be dedicated to development then then there's very little point in chasing any FA.

I don’t see that as Sparano’s mindset though.

I’m a pathological optimist though and I think we very well could be 2 FAs and a decent draft away from being in the playoffs,,,once you’re in, all bets are off.

We already have plenty of depth so if the only point is to

demote Clemons, potentially stinting his progression, so we can have depth it is kind of pointless. We have Jones, Ness and Culver as depth.

Would signing Atogwe automaticly mean Clemons is demoted?

Atogwe is a huge step up from Ness and Culver…it’s better depth….would not his presence also potentially help the development of Clemons and Jones?
How is it that we have no problem with the idea of using three Wrs all the time but we look at the defensive backfield and only see two safiey spots?

Because the only time you see 3 Ss in a D is in the quarter or when one S is acting as the nickel corner.

I mean what's the harm in situational rotation?

Jones and Clemons can still “develop” as long as they get regular playing time…they don’t necessarily have to be on the field for every play. We platoon RBs and WR we can’t platoon safetiies?
If we end up with an 18-game season we’re going to want as many “first string” level players as we can get.

I guess, it isn't done much unless you don't have starting caliber Ss that

are well rounded enough to be out there in every situation.

OJ is a great option...

but I would still kick the tires on Bob Sanders. He could be signed to a contract full of incentives. If he gets injured, we are in the same position we are now. With a young decent FS. All to all of you saying Jones should take over for Clemons, Jones is a better fit at SS. He is there for when Bell needs to be replaced, which should be within the next few years. I like the idea of signing Sanders because it is a low risk, high reward signing. If he gets injured, he doesn’t hit the incentives and will be cut, but if he stays healthy, we get one of the few gamechanging safetys in the NFL (assuming he is close to the same player). While I agree that OJ is the better option, he will cost much more. We have too many holes to fill to spend big money on him

Jones has proven to be a playmaker and has a nose for the ball.

He could easily be a starting caliber FS in this league.

Reshad Jones

is still a fairly long ways away from being a starting caliber FS in the NFL. I mentioned some of his shortcomings below. He has the talent and he is gifted, but is still a long way behind even Chris Clemons from a devolopment standpoint. He needs to work very hard this offseason to as Clemons did last year.

There are a few others but off th top of my head I cant think of them all right now.

Really Like Brodney Pool

He’s an underrated ballhawk-type. Plus, it’d be nice to get somebody from the Jets.

Dashon Goldson if this were last year. Otherwise, stay away.

Those are the only two I’d want on the Fins if Atogwe is not an option.

I agree i would love to see Brodney Pool come to Miami

I dont really think that Chris Clemons played badly at all in 2010. I think he showed alot of good things. I thought he showed good awareness and a nack for the ball. His pass coverage had its issues as it did in 2009 when he say play time but i think as a whole he had a really succussful campaign and im really happy about that.

Reshad Jones has a long way to come. Chris Clemons learned alot this offseason and it became apparent very quickly. The number of mental errors Clemons had this season was much lower than i thought he would have. Reshad Jones on the other hand made some serious mental mistakes this season, but thats to come with youth and not a tremendous amount of playtime. I thought he struggled in coverage a fair amount, he was overly aggressive and sometimes impatient, he was susceptible to the double move, didnt recognize plays too well and looks for kill shots. He didnt break down his tackles consistantly. Now with that said hes gifted as Clemons was in 09, and Clemons was very raw in 2009. Reshad Jones will improve im certain of it.

Now with that said Brodney Pool offers alot. Hes a really talented player, i never understood what The Browns were thinking about. he has had some injury concerns as “FinFanFromCA” pointed out but hes a dynamic player and a smart player. Id love to have him in our rotation next season.

Ahhhhh No!

i think the play of our gunners improved greatly over the course of the 2010 season, john Amaya is a capable kid, hes far more disciplined than Jason Allen was in his lanes and he is a pretty good tackler. On the other side we have a question mark. I doubt Patrick Cobbs returns in 2011 and didnt play all that well anyways, he has lost a lot of speed, so thats up in the air.

Upgrade safety position?

Sanders – there’s no question about the fact that Sanders is a dominant player when healthy, but he’s just too much of an injury risk to sign as a FA. Pass.

OJ – I was on this wagon last offseason. OK by me if we pony up the dollars to sign him. 14 INT’s in 4 seasons sounds like a nice addition to our secondary.

Considering all the “dream” targets have already been franchised by their respective teams (Woodley, Mankins, et al), spending the dollars on OJ seems like a plan to me. Plus, with the money we were going to use on those other guys, we could sign Wake long term, and at least toss an offer out to Soliai.

OJ,or Darren Sharper

Other than that, brodney if he comes cheap,or simply move one of our corners perhaps W.Allen, and shift Clemmons to Strong.

We have enough options at corner to allow the move to run smooth. Carrol can play nickel,or even Sapp, and its not like Will wouldn’t be a good leader,as well as a ballhawk from the safety position
