PrintThe Miami Dolphins have come out hot against the Oakland Raiders today, shutting down the NFL's fourth ranked rushing attack, and taking it straight to the Oakland defense.
The Dolphins held the Raiders to a combined 21 yards rushing, with Michael Bush picking up just five yards on five carries. The majority of the Raiders rushing yardage came on one 15-yard end around from wide receiver Louis Murphy. The passing game for the Raiders hasn't been much better, with Carson Palmer being held to 8-of-17 for 101 yards. In fact, the Raiders have just 107 yards in the half (compared to Miami's 205), with seven first downs. Miami has also sacked Palmer twice.
Maybe the most telling fact is that the Dolphins did not have to use punter Brandon Fields until there were 2 minutes to go in the first half. The Raiders have seen Shane Lechler come in to punt five times.
Anthony Fasano has been the weapon of choice for Matt Moore, with four receptions for 66 yards. Running back Reggie Bush is well on his way to his third career 100 yard day, with 79 yards on 10 carries in the half.
Let's hope that Miami can continue this dominance in the second half!

Some great stuff out there right now.
For one we are playing better than the Raiders on both sides of the line which has been a major piece to our success. Getting great pressure on Palmer and playing some good ball in the secondary. However after dominating the first half The Dolphins have only carried a 13 point lead in to the half. Also we have seen alot of man to man which was expected (and blitzing which was also expected) and our receiver corps has done a great job executing our plan and attacking their coverage schemes.
But ultimately its only a 13 point ball game.

Miami has been playing much more man coverage in the past few weeks.
They’ve been doing much better as well. They’re clearly better in man coverage than zone coverage.

The Dolphins have implemented more man into the scheme
but the primary factor is pressure. Pressure both base and in scheme (pressure packages) have been more consistant which has allowed us to do some more man coverage things in the secondary IMO.

I don't know about the pass rush being the primary factor
The pass rush has been getting better, but I can see a noticeable difference in how Miami’s CBs are sticking with the WRs. Before then, they gave up way too much cushion in the first 5 yards and in the middle of the field.

Its hard in halftime to go back and check out some line play again
but its looking very solid. I love some of the things Daboll has brought to this game as well. Really attacking Bresnahans aggression.

There were plenty of times he would try to sell the PA and the running backs didn’t help him out at all. Williams was the worst.

Typically on the OL you have smaller guys that can pull quickly.
Or big guys that can mual people. If Jerry continues to pull like that he will be a huge mauler that can MOVE.

But being a threat in the short passing game makes him more of a threat in the deep passing game.
Otherwise the D will just sit back on Gates.

I think rookie (especially raw rookies) need to be played the way they are used to being played.
Play to what they are comfortable with and get them to do that well. Then add wrinkles to their game. That way you don’t overwhelm them.

Gates needs to stay on the outside...
He isnt that good at running the slot tree. If anything, I would love to see him opposite Marshall with either Hartline playing slot, or them letting Thomas have some reps at runningback, and letting Bush spend some time as a reciever.
While it would be nice to see if Clay can do something, the injury to Mastrud and his run blocking demand that we keep him at FB/TE.
Unless we use Garner at TE, and give Hilliard some reps at FB. In which case I would like to see what Clay can do from the slot.

They are a backs to the wall type team. When they deviate from that mindset, they typically dont do well.
But, when they feel that pressure, they typically show this kind of resilience, and usually wind up with the W.
