Trade for Desean Jackson?

Just speculation but the Eagles are in worst off shape than we are. They are poised to pay their showoff receiver at the end of the season, or possibly trade them if they decide to go another route. I was thinking, maybe the Dolphins can make an offer?

Yes, we would probably have to give up a pick or a solid player... and yes, we would possibly have the league's most DIVALICIOUS wide receiver core... But as good as Hartline has produced, the ideal spot next to the BEAST would be a flat out burner who can stretch the field AND catch the ball (cough Ted Ginn). Not to mention we would be have our KR/PR spot locked up. I'd propose to give it a shot.. In less than 4 years, dude has caught 19 TD's, rushed for 3, and returned 6 kicks to the house (4 punts and 2 KRs).

IF and only IF Desean matures a bit... he would be an unbelievable asset to our rookie QB to have Marshall, Jackson and Bess next year.

What are your thoughts? What do you think it would take to get him to South Beach? I'd give up a 2nd rounder for him (pending his interview with the team of course). You think the Eagles would take Hartline, Misi and a 4th or I am just blowing steam? DISCUSS

If the eagles dont resign him, he's going to be a FA

If we can get him for cheap, then I think we have to go for it. It should be our biggest priority to get weapons around whichever qb we pick in the 1st.

The Eagles would have to franchise him and sign him...

In which case, I wouldn’t make a deal unless we could negotiate an extension with him.

So we are giving up on Gates after 1 lockout shortened season?

I don’t want the new TO at any cost because we already have lots of cap space locked up in Marshall, Fasano and Dansby. We need the draft picks to address our biggest deficiencies.

Yeah TO could be a locker room cancer but always played hard and never half assed it even when he was not happy

with the team. You know when Michael Irvin is ripping the guy given that he defends just about every WR then there is an issue. Irvin for sure had his off the field issues but the guy have 100% on every play for his entire career and has little respect for anyone that does anything less despite his contract situation.

Draft picks are gamble and proven players are made to plug in needed holes.

No one is giving up on Gates, but don’t compare him to DJ, when he haven’t shown to be worthy of such praise. People want to say speed is not a need, then lets access the best offenses in the league, oh I get it, Cleveland, Vikes, and Jax support said theory.

Even being a Diva and "giving up on his team"

a lot of teams are going to be giving Jackson a long look on the off-season. I doubt the Eagles resign him, but he is just such a talent a bunch of teams would want him.

I completely agree that he is the type of number 2 receiver we need. Opposing defenses will finally not be able to double Marhsall because they respect Jackson’s ability to take the ball down the field.

The only problem is that you can tell Jackson wants to play for a good team. Miami is not a particularly good team right now. Unless there is really no interest in him, which I believe there will be, there is a very slim chance of picking him up in FA.

Good points.

It’s a definite longshot.. However, there’s no mistake a focused and mature DJ would help our entire offense/ST out immensely. I just wanted to get the views of Fin Fans out there to see if it was worth the risk?

Signing Desean would no doubt be a luxury, NOT a need. WR/KR is not our biggest need, but I could see him helping in many many ways. Jackson is one of the league’s most underpaid players, I wonder if he’s offered a fair contract how would his demeanor change?

Um Marshall and Jackson on the same team?

Sounds like we’ll need a shrink following this team around 24/7. Both are great talents and trust me, if it did happen, I’d be ecstatic. Then again, they both become distractions when their teams are losing. If we bring in a QB and add Jackson to our arsenal- how do you lose? I guess anything is possible in the NFL. Especially with a team as talented as the Eagles losing…

Who would have thunk? 4-7!?

Signing a bunch of ballers to one team may work in the NBA to some extent, but this truly shows how much of a team game the NFL is.

The Eagles must be be the laziest team out there who rank dead last in fundamentals. They have as much talent of every team in the league, but unless they work together, and actually TRY to block and tackle, I don’t see them competing in the NFC.

Every single player on that team besides Lesean McCoy has underachieved. McCoy might be the most versatile back in the NFL.

i guess I would think real hard about it,

and it sounds great to add him to the team. But having that much money tied up on receivers may limit our ability to improve other position that as of right now are greater needs. Although this is a very risky move, if Jackson doesnt demand a huge deal (which I think he will), I would trade the 2nd for him.

im thinking right now is the time to buy low… his leverage is down because his numbers have been average and hes making more news OFF the field than on it.

Some positions are worth having money invested in them

Without emphasizing, the three key parts to an offense are the QB, OL, and WR’s.

With a great QB, average WR’s look good, a great stable of WR’s make even an average QB look great, and with a solid group on the offensive line does wonders for both the QB and Runningbacks.

Just think, if we had made an offer before the trade deadline, we would have had him during a contract season, and would have been able to give it a test run.

In truth, i think the two Marshall and DJ would actually balance each other out. Marshall would then know he actually has competition at his job, and DJ would have the value of a true number one playing across from him.

The second part is that star names put fans in the seats. Say what you want, but having both Marshall and Jackson, along with Reggie Bush would bring fans in loads. Just a chance to see both working together would make it worth it.

Not to mention the options Daboll would then have on offense. We would then be able to use a double slot formation with both slots manned by Bess and Hartline. Bush could get rest on certain downs by not being the only known quantity with speed on the team.

Double end arounds featuring both Bush and Jackson, the possibilities are endless.

Imo, as long as he is happy and healthy, having him would actually help more than hurt the team.

by dolphinfan4lyfe on Dec 4, 2011 11:03 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Not sure how but I really want him

The reasons he’s acting selfish and immature right now is because he never got paid, he took one for the team and now the team sucks and can’t make the playoffs so he’s in “F-You, F-everyone” mode.

We could pay him his fair contract, and with the strong defense we have and an explosive offense, we would be a playoff team as long as Moore doesn’t implode/our 1st rd QB doesn’t suck.

I actually see our compitition in signing him to come down to 2 teams.

San Fransisco, and New England. If it is mSan Fran, then no, you dont put an offer in, but if New England makes a bid, then you go for it.

I would have added Dallas in the fray, he seems like the ultimate JJ mancrush, but they seem to have found a solid one two punch at reciever, and they have contracts that need to be negociated to keep that defense together.

For us, it would come down to who we want more. Him or Paul Soliai. Because as it stands i wouldnt see us being able to have both.

by dolphinfan4lyfe on Dec 3, 2011 12:35 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I would do it for the Hartline, Misi, and a 3rd. Final offer.

I don’t think he is worth more than $3-4m per year personally. I don’t see him signing a deal that low. He’s a piece of sh!t in his current state……..

ACTUALLY, NO I would not acquire this guy. He is a disgrace to his name, the league, and most importantly his TEAMMATES! This guy makes Marshall look like Tebow. If he’s so worried about his money, go earn it. He’s out there moping around and trying to avoid injury. How would Mesean have felt if L. McCoy had his knee blown out when Jackson blatantly sidestepped that block on the sideline? That display he put on against the Seahawks was the biggest display of “quit” I have ever seen.

Otherwise they’d be called the greatest WR ever.

He's a slightly better version of Ted Ginn. Therefore he should get slightly more money than Ted Ginn.

I know some will think that’s crazy, but look at what Jackson does. He a decent return man. He only excels at deep passes and pass that take him to the sideline. He doesn’t like any route that takes him across the middle, and gets gator arms when he does. He shies away from contact. He’s at best, a good #2 WR. That’s also at best, the type of money he should get. He pretty much gave up on his team and he’s concussion prone. That takes away from the price. I would offer him an incentive laden deal with mediocre guarantees. If he demands more, then show the film of him jogging down the field during a game and let him know he needs to earn it. Which he has NOT done this year.

yea I have to agree with this, he isnt a "go to" guy in a time of need

more of a deep threat and basically everything you described. I still like his huge playmaking ability, but we have a lot of young players to resign and we shouldnt spend more than the necessary amount of money to attain him.
However, I am sure some desperate team will be stupid enough to spend that much money on him

by insainsiren on Dec 3, 2011 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

Slightly?

Desean isnt a slightly better version of Ted Ginn, he IS what Ted Ginn was supposed to be for us. If Ginn had the same production on offense as Desean I don’t see how anyone could complain. Hes an elite return man/deep threat and overall is a threat to score anywhere on the field. Desean weighs like 170 so I wouldn’t expect to go across the middle consistently and take unnecessary hits on his body.

At the end of the day I agree that we shouldnt pay him Marshall money, but wherever he goes hes going to get paid like the playmaker he is.

Ted Ginn. That is all

He will want #1 WR money, which is already tied up in Marshall. Besides we have many young players we

need to resign not too distant in the future. We don’t have the cap space to have two #1 WRs. Not unless we want to be like the Jets this past offseason (they had to let go of a lot of talent) or the Eagles this offseason.

I disagree.

Do you think Drew Brees/Peyton Manning/Aaron Rodgers/Tom Brady would play much better with a DeSean Jackson? Don’t you think there are about a dozen positions that are more important than WR? Much rather have a good LB, or Safety, or TE, or O-Line than a WR. The QB makes the WR, not vice versa. Austin Collie, the Colts WR, caught 58 passes in 9 games last year. He has 31 catches in 11 games this year. And do you really think he is any better than Brian Hartline or Davone Bess?

Steve Johnson, the Bills WR, caught 82 passes last year and has 54 so far this year. In the 2 years before that, he caught 12 passes. The difference is that he is now a starter and partly due to better QB play.

by PhinPhan910 on Dec 3, 2011 11:21 PM EST up reply actions

Accidently posted that

Here are more examples – Steve Smith, CAR, has over 1,000 yards this year while having only 554 last year. The difference is QB play.

And I’m not saying DJ is a bad player, he is good. But the difference between a star WR and an average one is MUCH less than say, a star defensive player against an average one.

by PhinPhan910 on Dec 3, 2011 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

Um

A receiver that has Curtis Painter at QB isnt the best example to use. You point out Collie but you failed to mention Manning also has Wayne, Garcon, and Clark. Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers also have a bunch of talent at wr. Brady is the exception (and Manning when his guys are injured).

Steve Johnson, the Bills WR, caught 82 passes last year and has 54 so far this year. In the 2 years before that, he caught 12 passes. The difference is that he is now a starter and partly due to better QB play.

Did you even bother to see why Johnson had only 12 catches 2 years prior to last season? First off he came into the league as a 7th round draft pick so its not like hes was seeing alot of action as a rookie and in 09 he had a rib injury. Im not saying his QB situation was great because we are talking about Buffalo here but still not the best example.

Ted Ginn. That is all

In reference to the QBs listed

Yes, yes, no and yes in that order.

Aaron Ridgers already has a burner to go to, so he gets the only no here.

Tom Brady and Peyton Manning both run spread Os, but

their teams still try to get deep threats. Garcon is the deep threat on the Colts and NE tried to get a deep threat in Ochocinco.

Aaron Rodgers has Jennings, a deep threat that happens to be his #1 target.

Rothelisberger had Mike Wallace, a deep threat, as his #1 WR.

Shaub has Andre Johnson (do I really need to say it?) as his #1 target.

Hell, even Sanchez had 2 deep threats last year. Tony Romo has a plethora of deep threats.

Our FO is the only FO I know that puts so much pressure on the QB to consistently go down the field and score in methodical drives.

I agree (to a point)
Our FO is the only FO I know that puts so much pressure on the QB to consistently go down the field and score in methodical drives.

When Parcells came to town, Ted Ginn was here. And though Cam Cameron reached PHENOMENALLY to get him, he was still looked at as a legitimate deep threat WR. So there was really no need to go after another “burner”.

They took Patrick Turner, and I’m sure they hoped he could turn into a big-bodied alpha type of guy. As soon as they realized that they didn’t have the guy in either Ginn or Turner, they went after Brandon Marshall. And, although they didn’t go after a guy with elite speed, they did satisfy the need for an “alpha” receiver.

Then it became clear that our offense lacked the deep threat. What did they do? They draft Clyde Gates and Charles Clay (guys who have great speed for their respective positions). And they picked up Reggie Bush.

Looks to me like a front office that recognizes mistakes and needs, and reacts accordingly.

If we really valued the TE position as much as the rest of the NFL, we would've drafted Hernandez in the 3rd.

I hate the what ifs, but us never drafting a top TE prospect when one is available sends a clear message to how they value the position.

I agree it'd be great to have a superstar TE.

Have you noticed that the offense is starting to gel and have been getting Fasano and Clay involved? As of right now I feel very comfortable with the TE position going forward. Fasano has been clutch lately and he makes acrobatic catches when given the chances. I would not use an early round pick on a TE this offseason. Maybe somewhere 4th-7th, if there was a guy there.

by MMANDIA on Dec 6, 2011 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

We got Aaron Hernandez

In Charles Clay. Similar size (Clay actually has a few inches on him) and speed, and Clay looks to be able to hold down the fullback position as well. So i’m happy in the TE department right now.

by DolfanVince86 on Dec 6, 2011 1:24 PM EST up reply actions

Clay is shorter and slower than Herndo and Herndo has a knack for getting first down, meaning we don't

have to go three wide on third an short and rely on Bess.

Pay him for what? Running his routes at 2/3 speed or refusing to block for a teammate to spring him for a TD? If you’re gonna hold out, then hold out. Or at least fake an injury like everyone else. At least your teammates that do care will know there are 11 guys on the field who want to be there.

so first off we can not trade for him this year because the deadline has passed already

at the end of the year he will go to the free agency, or the eagles will have to use their franchise tag on him to avoid free agency (this year it was used on vick, who already signed his extension). i am sure the eagles will try their hardest to get jackson resigned, and if does resign with them, there is no way he will be traded for awhile. However, being the diva that Jackson is, he might opt to try and get offers in the free agent market. If he does, we should most definitely put in a bid for him. I understand that people do not like this because we already have Gates, but what if Gates doesn’t pan out? DJ is already a proven play maker and he should only improve our wr corp

but if Philly franchises him cant they trade him around draft time for the rights to our #2 pick? Or does this not work?

At 3-8, I’ll be happy any playmaker will want to come to Miami. The man is way underpaid and as is Forte and Jackson, players whom have proven their worth to the team ans what do their teams do, go out and overpay for other’s castoffs. We are paying Solai 12mil and it blows me away we don’t want to pay a playmaker due money. No wonder the Jets can sit on the short routes and we continue to be the botttom of our division.

It's not about the money to me.

If you or I go to work tomorrow and ask for a raise and then proceed to loaf around for however long, we will get sh!t canned. I don’t like the argument that his career can be over in one play. So can mine or yours. Being part of a team means people depend on you to do your job. If you want to get paid, HOLDOUT like a man. Don’t collect game checks for jogging slower than me down the sidelines and alligator arming touchdowns. That is stealing.
I said it earlier: If McCoy took that hit on the knee (where he was expecting Mesean to throw a simple block) and had his career ended, would Jackson step up and take care of him and his family? If these “underpaid” guys are so concerned about the career ending hit, why don’t they take out insurance like the college kids do?
Since you brought up Forte, I have a great and newfound respect for that man.

In a perfect world I would give up my second, why, we most likely draft second and I would sell that pick for there 1st,2nd and 3rd

and there are teams dumb enough to do it. if there in the top ten picks I’m all in. We would get there first and second this year and either there 2nd or 3rd next. IF for some reason RG111 is there at 10 take him, then 2 picks O-line and the rest CB, FS, OLB, and maybe another late tall project WR. I still don’t think Henne is bad , and with the right team around him he will be very good. Not great but very good. that’s why I spend the second on RT and maybe pick up someone FA for the line. Let Jerry, Murtha , and the new guy battle it out in camp.If we build a line that works, Our QB plays better, Thomas runs better, and Bush can get out side. Go ahead a rip me about Henne, but when he goes else where and comes to town and owns us, you then will see why.

Okay, I've read 15 times now. It still doesn't make sense.

We give Philly the #2 pick for Jackson. Then we will trade a pick we no longer have to them again for their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rounder? Then use the 1st rounder they just gave us and trade it back to them again to trade further back into the 1st round with a team that no longer has a first that we’re trading back for……?

This is a good idea. We will wind up with D. Jackson, and Philly’s 1,2, and 3. :)

I have at least a 3rd grade reading comprehension, so I think your fingers were typing faster than you thought this out. I’m actually intrigued what your idea is, I hope that you can figure out how to explain it.

Agreed

I can’t think of more than a few coaches in the league right now that would put up with his 5 year old antics. Andy Reid has always been known as a soft coach when it comes to disciplining players. McNabb and T.O. were basically staging world war III by the time T.O. was kicked out of town.

Serious candidates for Jackson (ignoring cap room):
Oakland
New England (cuz Belichick always seems to be able to fix these guys)
Dallas (cuz Jerry Jones THINKS he can fix these guys)

BB doesn't value the speed guys because he runs a spread O.

He only got a deep threat this year because Ochocinco is on the end of his career and is washed up.

Nooooo

This guy is the opposite of what you want to bring into a team. Sure he occasionally makes plays. But the guy is one dimensional and acts like a little bitch when he’s not getting paid. Look at Forte Desean! He tells the team he’s frustrated but doesn’t give up either. Those are the type of guys you want on your team.

Versus Seattle last week he went deep and Vince looked at him but he didn’t even look over his shoulder. Not the guy you want on your team. I personally would hold onto the group we have and get a QB and a TE with our first 2 picks. Matt Barkley and Dwayne Allen are who I want next year. Then go OT in the 3rd to battle Murtha. Go hard after Laron Landry/ Tyvon Branch and Cliff Avril/Anthony Spencer for OLB and we’ll be set.

in the sixth rd. we can pick that winner from Boise he may be smaller than what is desired by NFL scoots!

Ah yes,

TE in the 2nd is very likely. Good call Beav. RT is probably #1, but I could see it going TE/RT if there is some value at RT in the 2nd and an explosive TE in the 1st. We definitely need another good OLB too though.

Random Eagles fan

(Unless the Eagles place a franchise tag on him, the Dolphins wouldn’t need to trade for him.)

Just some insight on Jackson. He wants too much money. He wants top-5 WR money, being paid like the Larry Fitzgerald. That is why he still on his rookie deal. Eagles already made him an offer for about $7-$8 million a year and he turned it down.

And for someone wanting to be paid like a top-receiver, he sure does not act like one. He has problems catching passes (9 drops on the year, as least 3 of those being TDs), not being a good route runner, alligator arming passes because is about to hit him, and quitting on plays.

He really has been a source of ire from Eagles fans this year.

That said, DeSean is still a decent receiver. Everyone knows why: he is really freaking fast. Every play he makes can easily turn into a big play. When DeSean is really clicking, he is definitely one of the more exciting receiver to watch.

If you can get him somewhere around $8-$9 a year million range, it would be a good deal for the Dolphins. He just wants more than that, but I have no idea who would pay him like he’s Larry Fitzgerald.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

We already have Marshall who makes in the 10 mil a year range. I can not see them dropping that much on another WR.
