Chad Henne has breakout year

We all know Chad Henne was having a pretty good start before he got injured. Lets just stretch our imagination and say he did not get hurt and continued having a good year.

Star-divide

Chad Henne's stat line at the end of the year are Yards 3,200 TD 22 INT 10 QB Rating 90

Chad Henne's contract is up at the end of this year and he has been a loyal dolphin for 4 years. He backed up Pennington, filled in when Pennington got hurt, Started only to be replaced by Pennington and came right back in when Pennington got hurt again.

What should we do with him?

UPDATE:

As many of you quickly figured out this was all a trick. I really wanted to know what would happen if i switched Chad Henne's name with Matt Moores stats. How would people answer the poll.

First I would like to say thanks to Henne's Mom for joining us on phinsider.com as she was the only one who voted for him to be the next franchise QB.

Next 35% of voters believed he should be the starter next year and bring in someone to compete with him for the starting job rookie or veteran.

9% believe he is nothing more than a backup

51% surprisingly said we should let him go because Moore can be the backup. I'm not sure how many saw my little trick before answering the answer.

I guess that proves my theory wrong... it's still about 35% support not making an effort to draft a QB either way.

Now on a similar poll all be it not the same. 67% of voters voted to move up to draft a rookie QB when the starting QB option was Matt Moore.

Poll
What should we do with Chad Henne after he has his breakout year?
Resign him to long term contract as QB of future
5 votes
Resign him as possible starter but bring in competetion
65 votes
Resign him as backup to some rookie/veteran QB
27 votes
Let him go since we have a good enough backup in Moore

This is not about Matt Moore

This is about Chad Henne… His contract is up and we need to make a decision. Let’s say he had a good year… Not Drew Breese year but very good year. He’s young and has room to grow. He’s shown he can protect the football and put the team in a possition to win.

but it does seem that there is a trick there.

My personal thoughts on Henne is that his stat line would have been more like
3850 yards
24tds
14ints
5 Fumbles

Where did you pull those numbers out of? I know where the numbers above came from, but Henne had as many INTs as TDs so extrapolating his numbers over the course of the season would end with…. as many INTs as TDs!

he would not have required those heaves every game i assume. I am also assuming that he would have continued to imporve along witht he offensive line, defense, and running game over the season. I get is Joel, you guys are high on Matt Moore. I am just not sold that he is any better then Henne.

Why were they last minute heaves?

Because he failed to get it done in the red zone and had poor clock management costing the offense several potential plays on last-minute drives, both of which resulted from his lack of composure in the 4th Quarter. Those last minute heaves resulted from his failings as a leader.

But I thought the clock management was all Tony Sparano's fault

At least, that’s what everyone said when Moore had to keep calling timeouts, leaving us with none late in halves.

Henne would throw short away from the sidelines.

Those passes are his decision. Sparano was terrible with timeouts too. They were both horrendous in the 2nd half when it came to clock management.

it also seemed that they didnt open up Dabols playbook until week 6 or so

and Henne did not get the benefit of the less conservative playcalling. Now many will say that is because Moore was better and the team trusted him more, but it is impossible to no for sure. What i do know, is the the team played different as soon as the defense decided to show up and that may have givent he offense more confidence to be riskier.

The coaching staff flat out said

they kept henne on a short leash because that was all he could handle.

IMO, the defense played different because they were finally proud of the offense instead of having to try and score points because the offense couldn’t. Hard to be the defense when your QB keeps giving away the ball to the other team.

Also, the team seemed to play better for Moore.

Henning really did make the locker room turn on Henne.

Actually, only 1 of Henne's INTs this season could be considered a "late minute heave"

And that would be the first one.

The second INT was in the Texans game and was the first play in the second quarter. Although it should be noted that Henne’s arm was hit on the throw.

The fourth INT was in the Chargers game and happened on the fourth play of the game for our offense.

The third INT was on the final drive of the Browns game. However, that entire series is a microcosm of exactly why Henne doesn’t need to be on this team anymore. We had the ball at the Cleveland 47 yard line with 36 seconds left, one timeout, down by one, needing only about 10 to 15 yards to get within Carpenter’s FG range to win the game. A loss here and we’re 0-3 and likely no chance at a playoff run. A win and our season might be turned around. A simple first down was all we needed. What happened?

1st and 10: Henne incomplete to Bess
2nd and 10: Henne incomplete to Gates
3rd and 10: Henne incomplete to Bess
4th and 10: Henne forces throw to Marshall… interception.

To be perfectly honest, I think Matt Moore would have gotten at least a first down, maybe more. Henne failed, ending the game and SHOULD have ended ANY notion that he will ever be a franchise QB. Franchise QBs get a first down in that situation. Heck, even a decent QB like Matt Moore could have gained a some yards to give DC$ a chance. We got nothing. For all the talk of Henne “improving”, that drive right there told us all we ever needed to know about Henne. When we needed him the most, with the game and possibly the season hanging in the balance, we turned to Henne and he couldn’t deliver.

This is a good post Earl and I agree with what your saying. Its hard to talk about that last drive

because of how badly we needed that game and the position the team was in. As you probably remember Mohamed Massaquoi’s celebration in the endzone (going down to his knees) coupled with the horse collar tackle on the kickoff put us in buisness despite having thrown away multiple oppurtunities on offense and defense in the 4th quarter to put the game away. However there are two seperate issues. The first is the drive the second is the interception.

Chad Henne should get a pass on the interception. It was fourth down and long, they came in out in press man coverage (as Dick Jauron so often does), there were 20 seconds left in the game and we had to make a play. Jabaal Sheard beat Nate Garner pretty badly on the play supplying substantial pressure on Chad. He tried to hit Marshall on the intermediate route across the middle despite great coverage from Joe Haden and the ball just got away from him alittle bit. Mike Adams made a great play on it too. The point is the interception itself wasn’t his fault. We had to make a play, Chad was under pressure and he forced a pass trying to make something happen. Im ok with that.

The drive as a whole though represents something else. First off the Browns deserve alot of credit. They have IMO the best pass defense we played this year and they run very tight and aggressive press man coverage which combined with their exterior pass rush creates a deadly combination. The first pass was a great play by Dimitri Patterson the coverage was really tight and Hennes pass wasn’t perfect. The second play to Gates had a few things go wrong. First was that Gates allowed Buster Skrine to lean him into the sideline on the go route giving away his position for the ball. Chad tried to take the strike because of the press coverage and it wasn’t there. Third down was a bad break down in protection because of the heavy pressure (they blitzed) combined with the tight coverage forced Chad to a quick decision and a great throw. He tried Bess on an out route who was blanketed by Patterson. The throw would have had to have been PERFECT for a completion. It was also well short of the sticks.

My point is this. the last drive represented a failure of the offense as a whole, and great defense from the Browns but your assertion on Henne is spot on. This line says it all: “When we needed him the most, with the game and possibly the season hanging in the balance, we turned to Henne and he couldn’t deliver.”

Multiple things went wrong on the drive, but we needed Chad desperately against a very stellar pass defense. Chad Henne, as mush as this pains me to say because I love the kid, when other things went wrong he simply isn’t good enough to carry the team. When other things went wrong he couldn’t deliver.

I would like to see him get another chance

somewhere but I’m not sure that will happen. As for the Seahawks don’t you think Pete Carroll and John Schneider will be intensely vilified if he brings in Henne to compete for the starting job? if he decides that Jackson isn’t to be their franchise Quarterback the fan base will want one of two things. For them to trade for one, an established Quarterback who has proved himself to be great elsewhere, or draft one. I don’t think Henne will cut it with their fanbase.

Really only one was two were last minute heaves.

The first Texans INT was due to him getting hit as he was throwing it, Then he had the inexplicable INT at the start of the Charger game, thonly one that was his fault.

We started the season 0-7

Henne only played the 1st 3 games and 1/4. We saw his # projected though 16 games.

To be fair lets look at Moores stats( his 1st 3 games plus) before the defense stepped up and we found a running game.

2824 yards 4 TD’s and 16 INT’s. He was averaging a pick a game and only one TD.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not defending Henne. Actually I like Moore and what he brings to the table, but I also think Henne should be brought back. Draft our QB for the future ( if not this year then next year). Let Henne and Moore compete to be the stater.

how does that make any sense?

Are we just gonna magically gonna win more games with the same team? Of course we would have to switch teams. And I would’ve done it. Because they were 1 good game away from the Super Bowl in back to back seasons. We haven’t made the playoffs in back to back seasons since 2001. We are mired in the single worst stretch in Franchise History. 1 playoff appearance in 10 years.. 6 straight years without a playoff appearance, followed by 1 playoff game, followed by 3 more years of no playoffs… That 6 year stretch is the longest in Team history.

I’d gladly trade with the Jets right now. 2 AFC Championship games in the last 2 years? A chance to make the playoffs for the 3rd straight year? I’ll take it.

If Moore is the starter who will back him up? I here a lot of you say Henne would be a good back up so why not. On the other hand I here a lot of your say Moore is nothing but a backup. However it goes we’ll not a solid backup QB.

http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/11/25/2517507/good-backup-quarterbacks-suddenly.html

I have people coming at me from all direction. First we have the Henne haters, now the Moore haters and the SFL crew. I think the SFLers have migrated into the GTHFL. They had to find someway they could get their savior.

I'm sorry, IMO henne sucks

He never could get his TD’s record above his INT record, and that kind of play won’t win you many games and it didn’t.

I am quite sick of hearing the name henne, and admit I might just have a party when he goes to another team, where he will play for them exactly like he played for us. Perhaps the redskins might take him… he’d fit in just perfect with John Beck.

Matt Moore has a 103.9 passer rating over his last eight games, and a 4 quarter rating of 61.6 with 2, 4 Q come backs.

chad henne has a 79.0 passer rating, which was a career-high his first 4 games and his 4 quarter rating is the 31st-ranked (of 33 players) ranked this season. with a rating of an atrocious 48.7

chad henne’s ratings as of week 3.

Most like MM a lot more than henne, but most also want a shot at one of the very good prospects coming out in this next draft.

MM is playing pretty well, but I’d sure love to have 2 good qb, and watch them fight it out for the starting job!!!!

Its hilarious to me

that when matt moore was brought in to compete with Henne, most were in an uproar saying its no competition, but now now everyone wants to keep moore and be done with henne… lets look at matt moores states over HIS first 4 games of the season..
@ SD 65.4% 0 TD 1 INT
@ NYJ 47.1% 0 TD 2 INT
DEN 66.7% 1 TD 0 INT
@ NYG 59.1% 0 TD 1 INT

1 TD, and 4 INTS in first four games.. Im not trying to take anything away from matt moore, I really like the guy and would love for him to start in 2012.. Im just not sold on giving henne the boot just yet, as he could be a good 3rd string qb for us (if he’d be willing to come back in that roll)

by kabvorka on Dec 29, 2011 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

wo wo wo

pump the brakes. we are only talking about the good matt moore here and the team that played better at the end of the season. Not the i have to play with the same personal and effort guys that henne played with. That would hurt thier argument.

Um, wow

I was just saying that Matt Moore has played well for the Dolphins and those stats that are stretched through a whole season include the games you are speaking of, which you said people didn’t want to talk about. But it shows even more how well he’s been playing since with those horrible games he still has more TD’s than interceptions and is making lots of “chunk plays” for the offense.

by phinhead on Dec 29, 2011 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly, Phin!

And while we’re at it, let’s stretch out another stat since some people aren’t interested in looking at Moore’s entire body of work, but only what “he’s doing NOW.” Moore is 5-6 as Miami’s starter, which equals a regular season of about 7-9. To be sure, that’s better than Henne’s 0-3 start, but you’re still not getting to the playoffs at 7-9, unless you’re Seattle. But here’s something else to consider: The Dolphins, like any other team, have these guys called “coaches,” and these coaches had a chance to observe both QBs during practice AND decided Henne was the better option. But hey, I’m sure all the experts around here know a lot more about football than people who make a living being involved in professional football, so we should just defer to their expertise. I’m looking forward to the day when Ross introduces a Phinsider member as the new head coach. It’s obvious they have ALL the answers.

GM huh? Dream big or go home.

I hear ya, but the point is that none of us are in a position to judge, as accurately as the coaching staff, who should play and who should sit. We read the papers, watch the games, post on the blogs, etc., but none of us are at practice, in the huddle, in the locker room, watching tape or studying the playbook. Meanwhile, a lot of the suport/criticism for both QBs is based on correlation, not causation. For example, is Moore the better QB, or does he have the benefit of improvements in the defense, running game, o-line, and an o-coordinator who is getting more comfortable in his role? We can’t measure. Is Henne a worse QB, or is he a victim of horrendous coaching/play calling? (I can think of plenty of examples here) Is Henne a robot, and if so, is he made by Sony? (okay, that’s a different discussion). I like what Moore has been able to do, but it’s amazing the free pass the guy gets when he makes the same mistakes Henne did, maybe even worse mistakes (pick 6 against the nyets on the Monday nighter, fumble late in the first half against the cowboys leading to a Dallas td are two prime examples). Meanwhile, it’s interesting how some of the very same people who think Ireland should go seem to forget he’s the one who signed Moore in the first place. Gotta take the good with the bad – nobody’s perfect. And not to stoke the flames, but you never adressed the point that Moore has a losing record as Miami’s starting QB, and that’s with the benefit of better d, o-line play, and a ground game.

by Dolfan Lee on Dec 30, 2011 9:43 AM EST up reply actions

I never said Ireland should go.

In fact, I’ve been arguing for him after the success of his first lone draft.

Henne is terrible. Matt Moore outplayed him in the preseason and yet Sparano continued to go with his guy just like he did in the past, see “Gibril Wilson” and “Will Allen circa 2009”, regardless of how bad they were playing. Tony Sparano was a nice guy and that was his problem as a head coach. The nice guy doesn’t want to hurt feelings, but there’s no crying in football.

by joel311 on Dec 30, 2011 10:04 AM EST up reply actions

Never said you did

Scan the threads about Ireland, you’ll see. The point is people are so quick to include stats that support their argument while dismissing data that does not. In the meantime, I’ll repeat: “Moore is 5-6 as Miami’s starter…you never adressed the point that Moore has a losing record as Miami’s starting QB, and that’s with the benefit of better d, o-line play, and a ground game.” Since I noticed your tagline reads “More of Moore in 2012,” you might as well be saying “More mediocrity in 2012,” or perhaps “More of a guy with a slightly, albeit still losing, record than the guy who was there before, in 2012!” You can try to rationalize it as much as you want, but since you refernce the “data,” that data says Moore still has a losing record as Miami’s starting QB, and he still throws bad interceptions/takes bad sacks. You’re right about nice guys, and Sparano was, which is why I like Fisher or even Cowher (but that’s another topic).

by Dolfan Lee on Dec 30, 2011 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

Let's be realistic

We have Henne that was given every opportunity to succeed this year and he failed to take advantage of it. Even though he had a good game against the Patriots the next few games were not great. Sure he might have done better but in 4 years on this team he has shown that probably not.
On the other hand Moore was not given any opportunities to succeed. From the first day he was here it was made clear by everyone that was expecting competition for Henne that there was no competition. When given the opportunity he took advantage of it. Not at first but after a few games he started to really lead this offense scoring lots of points and getting wins. He won the games he should have and came up short in the big games.
Moore is not Drew Breese or Tom Brady but he’s been playing as well as many big name QB’s in this league. Players that if you asked me at the beginning of the season I would take in a heartbeat. He’s young and has room to grow.
I really feel we need real competition at QB this year and I would like a Luck or RG3 wearing a dolphins uniform. But let’s not trade away the farm to do it when we have solid QB on the team.

I just don’t like the idea of mortgaging so much on one player, which is what the Raiders have done with Palmer. If the Dolphins have to trade up to get their franchise QB, it’s gonna be expensive. If that guy doesn’t pan out…whew…that takes a long time to recover. But I suppose you have to gamble at some point when you haven’t gone all-in on a QB in nearly three decades.

And I trus,t he knows what he’s willing to part with in trading up. If it doesn’t work out, we’re still going to have a great draft.

After The Jets game,

Moore will be 6-6 as a starter despite not having first team reps until two weeks before his first start. What will your argument be then? That Henne MIGHT have had a .500 record at some point in his career?

Henne was given YEARS to succeed.

He didn’t. Matt Moore has shown more progress in half a season than Henne has shown in his e-n-t-i-r-e-c-a-r-e-e-r. Do you have wet dreams about Henne at night or something? What exactly is causing you to deny reality?

And since you're being Mr. Sensitive

If you look at your own argument of last minute heaves, 2 of Matt Moore’s 4 interceptions in that span were last minute heaves. At the end of the Chargers game and at the end of the Giants game.

Yeah,

that’s cool, include Moore’s game off the bench. Makes a lot of sense.

Henne had first team practice reps for all those weeks leading up to his injury. I guess logic plays no role here.

It is cool

That MM was able to get better.. dont get me wrong- I really like MM, but if Henne had MM’s stats this season, yeah- we’d be singing a different song, and it would be henne’s services we’d be retaining as im sure we will logically retain MM..

I love MM and the PROGRESS he made this season.. Henne could have improved as well. He improved as a scrambler, whats to say he couldnt improve other phases of his game? thats all…. ps. henne sucks

by kabvorka on Dec 29, 2011 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

I like your argument here,

HOWEVER, If CH had MM’s stats at the end of the season the song most would be singing would sound like this: "Henne sucks! Another losing season, ONLY 20 passing TDs, ONLY 3 rushing TDs even with the benefit of bionic legs! Clearly he’s not getting it done in the red zone! 19 Fumbles, 9 lost plus his 9 INTs means he is a TURNOVER MACHINE. These were the numbers I extrapolated with simple 3rd grade rounding up or down.

I can scream it form the mountain tops, but I hate climbing. 23 TDs to 19 Turnovers is NOT starting QB material.

I hate Seattle weather.

by ricenbeans82 on Dec 29, 2011 9:58 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Very very likely

the Jets need a new back-up if they are gonna stick with Sanchez. Henne will be one of the more affordable back-ups who at least has a couple years of starting experience. I don’t see Henne getting any offers to be a starter anywhere, and I’ve been thinking this same thing. The Jets make a lot of sense as a place for Henne to land.

It is also very likely that if the jets signed Henne and he actually played against us...

that he would do well for three quarters, but then, just when the jets needed him the most, Henne would throw another game/season/career/soul crushing interception and they would lose.

It is also very likely (and very sad) that when that scenario happened that there would be a fanpost explaining how the INT and the loss wasn’t actually Henne’s fault and he still has potential and just needs a few more centuries seasons to get it right.

For a long time I was one of Chad's biggest supports on this site.

He did improve in the areas that plagued him throughout his tenure in Miami. His body-positioning improved, his ball placement (somewhat as a result improved), he made less and less mistakes, he got better with his eyes and on and on. He was the consumate team player and took abuse from this organization and the fanbase yet it never seemed to deter him. I appreciate his work ethic and commitment. I intently analyzed his play and he without a doubt improved as Quarterback during his tenure. However during games, when other things went wrong on a given play, he almost never made one, including in critical situations where we desperately needed him. The last drive in the Browns game week 3 was your example above which I elaborated on and there are many other examples.

Last week we played the Patriots (obviously as if anyone has forgotton). That has problems all over their team right now. Excluding the issues on the defensive side of the ball look at their protection. Their offensive lien has been reshuffled almost every week this year. Dan Connelly went down in week 1 (third dirve in Miami) which pushed Ryan Wendell into the starting role for weeks. Brian Waters has since missed time, Matt Light was out coming into our game, forcing Nate Solder into the starting role. Further losses to Sebastian Vollmer and Logan Mankins, forced the Patriots to play Donald Thomas at Gaurd and the fifth round rookie Marcus Cannon at Tackle. These injuries to a line that hasn’t maintained any continuity all season (and one that has led to more Quarterback hits this season than any other in Brady’s career) was only further depleted and it was a mjor factor in our ability to stall their offensive productivity.

When the game was 17-3, we turned the ball over at the 40 yard line and the Pats drove it down to our 2, they really needed to score a touchdown. The difference between a 17-6 game and a 17-10 game with a few minutes left in the Third Quarter is massive. The Dolphins had a chance to hold them to three, third and goal at the one. They blew the protection, the pocket collapsed, Brady felt the rush and was flushed hard to his left. he made the throw in to the back of the endzone, in man coverage under heavy pressure and about to go down.

Im sure you know exactly what play and drive Im talking about. My point is this. The Patriots have one of the greatest Quarterbacks to ever play the game. Things went wrong all over the place on that play, yet like he has all year, he made an incredible play in a critical situation. As much as Chad improved, I can never see a point in his career where Chad will ever be good enough to make that kind of play for his team under those circumstances.
