Should the Miami Dolphins Consider Trading Jake Long?
Earlier today, we discussed the idea that Armando Salguero and several other blogs have floated today - that the Miami Dolphins need to consider trading All-Pro left tackle Jake Long. The idea is that Long, with some draft picks, would be required to move up in the 2012 NFL draft to grab Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.
After that post, and with the suggestion of PhinsTifosi, a poll about the idea of trading Long became a necessity. So, vote for your choice.

This is a raw Question but we have had the services of said LT, & it has not resulted in a winning thing sept for that first year when we went into the nite with our tails between our legs in a playoff season!

I meant to click Yes, but only if we are going after Luck...
But I am pretty sure I clicked NO instead… must have been a Freudian slip… But as much as I love Jake Long he has seen a bit of the injury bug lately and he has not been nearly as good as he has in the past few years. If you can package him to some team to wind up with Luck… DO IT.
We had [Brady] down… but we didn’t kick him. We helped him up and gave him a PowerPuff Girls band-aid for his knee. What exactly did you expect would happen when we did that?
My thoughts are that we need to tie Jake Long to a chair and force him to allow himself time to heal
Otherwise, keep him. There are several reasons why we should, but I will just go with the top 5:
1. He is a team leader. This may not seem important now, but in the end, trading him sends the wrong message to the rest of the team.
2. Since the dawn of the foreward pass becoming a mainstay in the league, the LT has become the second most important position on offense. It becomes the differencemaker when you have a guy protecting the blinspot of the QB.
3. He is the rock that holds the offensive line together. Take him out this season, and you dont get the same production from Incognito, Pounceys.job becomes harder as a rookie, and we end up with a wet paper bag protecting our QBs blindside.
4. The respect factor from the rest of the team. Players wouldnt show up this past offseason if it was just Henne calling the practices.
5. You do not trade away a top 100 talent. I am not talking about from simply a LT perspective, but he has garnished the respect of his peers, to the tune that he is in the top 30 of all NFL players in the NFL. You simply cannot replace that.
In truth, I believe that without Jake Long, we are further from our goal of being an elite team.

There are more teams in the NFL that are elite with average LT's and elite QB's than the other way around.
Look at the Steelers, Bears, Lions, Falcons, etc, elite QB’s poor to average LT’s. The Bears have one of the worst LT’s in the game yet were 7-3 before Cutler got hurt (making a tackle on an INT). Since he has gone out, with the same OL (and LT), they have lost 6 straight. So who is more important to that team, the QB or LT? Rodgers has played significant portions of the last two years without his starting LT yet the Packers have done OK.
An elite LT is a luxury not a necessity. As great as Long is at the position, he is still a luxury, nothing more.

However, could you picture Brady without Light....
A Left Tackle does more than just protect a persons blindside.
Lets put it this way. Without Jake Long, do you see:
1. Matt Moore winning ANY games for us this season.
2. Reggie Bush having a career year.
3. Anyone else on this team helping Henne organize pertinent offseason workouts that brought the team closer together.
4. Daniel Thomas put up good numners to start the season.
5. Pouncey progress the way he has at a position no one thought he could handle.
6. Incognito temper behavior that had led to him being released from the Rams, that have ultimately turned him from a RG.with attitude issues, into a solid LG prospect.
I dont see any of these things occuring if Long is not here, which shows there is more value at LT than simply protecting a QBs blindside.

No one denies what Long has done for us
but the bottom line is, if trading him leads to a elite QB like Luck you have to make that trade.
However, could you picture Brady without Light….
Actually yes, Matt Light is a good-great LT not elite. He has been to 3 Pro Bowls in 10 years with 2 of those years as an injury replacement. The success for the Patriots is they have a good OL that play well together at all 5 positions.
i dont believe the probowl is great indacater of how good a player is
as evidenced by all of the popular players making it year after year and Marshall making it this year.

I disagree
part of what has been so amazing this season in New England is their record despite the injuries, with the offensive line constantly being reshuffled this season. Dan Connelly has missed substantial time, Matt Light has missed time, Brian Waters has missed time and Sebastian Vollmer has missed time. Brady has been hit more this season (knockdowns) than virtually any other season and they have many problems on defense (in part but not entirely due to injuries). Yet they are 12-3 because of their diversity at receiver and runningback, their stupendous Tight Ends, amazing coaching and obviously having one of the greatest Quarterbacks to ever the play the game at the helm. No disrespect to the Pats, but without Tom they are one of the least talented teams in the league and have suffered devastating injuries.

I don't think so...
I mean, trading away the QB protection to get a QB that won’t be protected? Haven’t we had enough experience ruining QB’s with poor support? I say keep Long…and trade up with draft picks…this year, and maybe next year’s first…but I’m more inclined to get a monster RT to complement Long. I"m all for getting Luck…but I don’t think we have to sell the farm quite yet to be successful.

Hmmm...... an interesting thought
My initial inclination is hell no! After some thought though if it led to having Luck then we definitely should consider it. The bottom line is we need an elite QB and Luck is one of the first sure fire QB’s in a generation.
I also don’t care what the Moore supporters say, he is a stop-gap solution, nothing more. Could he lead us to a Super Bowl, maybe, no one knows. What we do know is he isn’t an elite QB that will make us a perennial playoff team and never will be. We all remember a guy named Dan, with little supporting cast he made us into favorites to win the division every year. Bottom line, if we can get Luck no one on the team is untradeable. It’s about time we stop putting other teams castaways as our “QB of the future”.
To get Luck only, no oner else (not even RG3)
Just think how stupid the average Jest fan is, and then realize that half of them are even stupider! ( a parody of a George Carlin line)
In my opinion...
…Luck is getting so far overvalued with all the team clawing to get him, that it would be best not to go for him. Instead, collect a bunch of picks and bolster the roster with a bunch of quality players, as opposed to putting the eggs in one basket for one potentially elite player. Flesh out the roster. Worst thing that can happy to a rookie quarterback is to be thrown into the fire with no stability on offense.
Oh & i think youens will be seeing a lot more of moore next year!

This^^^
Protecting the QB only matters if the QB is any good. The Dolphins haven’t had a QB that’s any good since Marino.
