THE FINS PLAN FOR 2012, I HOPE

First of all, the ideas I'm going to throw out at you are just that, ideas. Before we head into the meat of this post, I want you to know our future personnel will depend much on our next coaching staff, so keep that in mind. We all know that this offseason will have no interruptions of work stoppages and will culminate with a full session of training camp. That being said, I want you to just take a deep breath and think before you react to what I'm about to say. Okay, are you ready? Jake Long will be one of the best RT in football next season and John Jerry will become an elite LT. Crazy huh? Why do that? Because Jake Long is the pillar of our OL, but his health will depend on this move and with him tutoring Jerry for the LT position during training camp, it should make for a smooth transition and the making of one of the best OL in the NFL. I know many of you all is still not feeling such a move but lets keep going, because as Long and Jerry toils away, our FO is busy talking to Ben Grubbs and Carl Nicks, 2 of the best OG's available this offseason via free agency. Securing either would give our offense the soldiers we need to win in the trenches. So our OL has Jerry at LT, Grubbs or Nicks at LG, Pouncey at Center, Incognito, RG(been Jake's sidekick for awhile) and Jake Long at RT.

Now that our OL has been revamped, lets look at our defense. In 2012, I see the possibility of the Dolphins converting back to a 4-3 defense mainly because we can dump the almost 12.4 mil Soliai is receiving. This move along allows us to pursue one of the most up and coming DEs in the league and his name is Cliff Avril of the Detroit Lions. With Odrick and Starks manning the tackles, Jason Taylor and Avril will bring the heat needed to harrass QBs each Sunday. Our linebacking corp will have Burnett and Wake on the outside with Dansby anchoring the middle. McDaniel and Alama Francis will supply needed depth on our DL, along with a late round pick in the draft as Misi and ST players back up the LBs. Our secondary remains intact with Bell returning for probably an encore season, but I think the fins should target 49er's FS, Dashon Goodson or Madieu Williams, as both are formidable players available in FA and will solidify our secondary.

As you know, to become a player, you must release some players. In addition to Soliai, say farewell, to Langsford, Merling, Carey, Will Allen, Tyrone Culver, and Chris Clemmons. This will give the fins almost $20mil to effectively upgrade in FA and allow them to draft with a purpose. With young guns like Jimmy Wilson, Nolan Carroll, and Rashad Jones lurking in the shadows, the future of our secondary looks promising. Now that our free agents are on board and our map to 2012 is laid out, it is now time for the draft. First of all, I would like to sign and trade Henne for a 2nd round pick and I think the Seahawks will be more than willing and wouldn't be surprised to see the Browns nibble on this bait. I'm going to go out on a limb but I think the Dolphins grab RG3 in the first with Barkley going to the skins, draft order will be paramount as to which one lands where. Having 2 picks in the 2nd, personally I will grab TE, Dwayne Allen(Clemson) and Barrett Jones, OT(Alabama) in this round. Round 3 will have us picking up 6-4, 220lb, 4.4 speed, Dwight Jones(UNC). He is really a clone of Hakeem Nicks but has the athleticism of Saints TE, Jimmy Graham, as Jones led his high school team in Burlington, NC to 2 basketball state championships. The 4th round has us picking up Marcus Zuservics, OT, out of Iowa. Rounds 5-7 will be used on best player available with emphasis on linebackers and defensive ends. Well, there you have it my fellow fins and I leave you to discuss this blueprint and our beginning journey to relevancy in next year's trek to the superbowl, so please FIRE AWAYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!

JT is most likely retiring.

Wake would play DE in a 4-3, not LB.

Jake Long should not be moved to RT. Jerry had 1 good game at LT. Come on now.

The Browns are likely going to draft a QB with Colt looking like crap lately. Who knows the Jags might even draft a 1st rounder again, I’ve read that they are really unhappy with Gabbert. Unlikely but possible. We might have to trade up if we want one of the top QB’s.

Nice post but

there is plenty here that won’t happen. I do agree that the Fins will part ways with a few players next year — Carey and Allen I agree with.

Jake Long is not moving to RT. Jerry had his 1st game against a defense that is not known for rushing the passer with any effectiveness. Jerry would’ve struggled against the Eagles pass rush.

Why would Henne re-sign with the Dolphins when he’s a free agent? And nobody is going to give us a 2nd for him even if he would be dumb enough to re-sign with us. So that shoots your theory of having 2 2nd round picks.

Taylor is most likely retiring as kzj1627 posted. You let Merling and Langford both walk along with Solai and you’re gonna have some holes on the d-line.

Finally, if you are planning on putting Jerry at LT, then why do you have us taking two LT’s in the draft? Huh? C’mon Man!

Because I think Long has been playing injured for awhile and it is catching up.

Good LTs are hard to find and getting 4 in the draft is a plus and gives us versatility if Jerry doesn’t pan out.

Except nobody expects Long's injury to last into next season...

And even if we find a good LT in the draft, that leaves us with 2. We currently have 1 good OT, let alone LT.

I apprecitate the ideas,

but you are talking about shifting up an O Line that has been pretty effective, changing a top ten defense, and getting a second round draft pick for Henne. I want what your having! :)

I feel that our defense shoudl be left alone outside of upgrading at safety.

I feel that with a rockstart RG or RT in FA or the draft, our line will be in good shape.

I feel that the only way we can get a second round pick for a QB is by trading Moore and letting Henne play until the QB we draft is ready.

I feel that too many people want to blow this team up even though they are playing at a very high level right now. Hopefully beating the patriots this weekend will help my fellow Fin Fans feel more confident about our team.

To be polite...

I don’t like the plan at all and we don’t pull off a sign and trade. First, Henne is not worth a 2nd rounder, and second, sign and trades don’t happen in the NFL.

I have no desire to move Long to RT nor do I have a desire to keep Jerry at LT. In fact Jerry should not be named started at RG or RT without stiff competition either. He’s not that good.

Really, the only thing I liked about the plan is the drafting of Barkley or RG3.

Well thank you 83

So you are sayin that Henne is not better than any of the qbs graded as 2nd round talent in this draft and that Jackson of Seattle is better?

I'm not saying Jackson is a better QB...

But I am saying Henne is not graded as being any better than the 2nd round QBs in this draft. The likely 2nd round picks such as Cousins and Tannehill are actually pretty solid prospects that teams believe have potential. Henne is a 3-year NFL QB that has been unspectacular that many front offices have criticized him for being robotic and making the wrong reads. While he did improve this year, there is no way Henne is worth a 2nd round pick in a trade.

Even if he was worth a 2nd round pick, teams don’t do sign and trades. Henne has no incentive to sign with Miami only to trade him. Why would he do that? He’s not a restricted free agent and he’d be ecstatic, quickly signing the dotted line, if Miami offered him a franchise tag. If he agreed to go to another team via FA, he’s not going to want to do Miami a favor and milk a draft pick out of his new team. You can argue Henne’s value all you want, but the fact remains I will say for 100% certainty that Miami will not resign Chad Henne and then trade him as a sign and trade.

While I think Jake Long is our best LT and one of the league's elite

I think his injury is more serious than expected d will linger for a long time to come, however he switch to RT is only to protect him, as is the case this week and keep him a part of our OL.

for me, the only way to protect a potential top ten QB

Is to protect his blind side. The only way this plan would work is if we drafted a lefty.

In reality he can get hurt just as bad on the right side....

why risk him getting hurt worse by putting him at an unnatural position? If he’s gonna be on the field, he needs to be on the left IMO.

by MMANDIA on Dec 21, 2011 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

Just an idea to protect Long

LT is the most vital position on the OL especially being that 95% of the time, it is the blindside where most teams places their best pass rushers. I want JL to stay at LT, but if it means we loses him, I’m open for any way to keep him on the field.

Long's injury shouldn't linger

A full offseason’s rest and actually being able to work with team doctors during the offseason will benefit him. His back injury is not supposed to be major and he wouldn’t be practicing and playing in the final 2 games that don’t mean anything if his injury was expected to linger. Besides, moving him to RT does nothing to protect him. The movements he makes are the exact same, the only difference is the competition he is facing. Besides, moving Long to RT to “protect” him only means that we’re risking the short-term and long-term health of any QB we field in 2012.

Sorry for the post, guys

But we all need to think about whether this coaching staff will be here next season and what kind of defense a new coach bring to the table. Soliai upcoming asking price will also reflect the direction our defense goes and hopefully Jake return to top form.

Dwight Jones is not going to be available in the 3rd

Once he hits the combine Jones will be flying up the draft board and has a good chance of going in the 1st rd. I’m betting Chicago takes him

excited to see Matt Flynn play!

is anyone else curious to see how Flynn plays today? I mean he’s pretty much playing the whole game and I think is def. on our radar. I think he would be a good option to bring in to compete w/ Moore. I would love to see Luck but have come to grips w/ that not happening. I really don’t want to see us sell the farm for luck or give away too much for RGIII either. Remember Barkley will be in the 2013 draft. Thoughts?
