Rams at Seahawks Monday Night Football Live Thread
The St. Louis Rams play the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football tonight. Try to enjoy the game, even though all of us know, the thread below is going to be dominated by talk to Tony Sparano's firing.
Even though both of these teams are bad (is Steve Spagnuolo the next coach to be fired this week?), a game pitting Marshawn Lynch and Steven Jackson should at least have some entertainment value.
Either way, enjoy.

To all my fellow Phin fans....
Keep a close eye on #29 Earl Thomas when Seattle is on defense. It will hurt to remember that we passed on this guy to trade down for Odrick and Misi. Odrick has really come on lately and looks like a good draft pick, Misi hasn’t, yet.
Anyways, living in Seattle, I’ve come to accept the Seahawks as my backup team. It’s been a pleasure to watch this kid the last season and a half. He really flies around the ball and looks like the fastest player on the field every time he’s out there. It’s hard to believe he “only” ran a 4.4 at the combine. He loses NO speed when he puts on the pads. We need a playmaker like this in our secondary. This needs to be addressed this offseason.
Not to knock Odrick too badly,
But we already had a decent D line and decided to let a couple of 5th rounders man the FS position. Thomas will prove to be perennial pro bowler who changes games with turnovers. Odrick is a good player as of late, and definitely has the potential to be great, but it’s hard to imagine a 3-4 DE being know as a game changer.
Good evening all
I still enjoy these live game threads so thanks Mosul for not making an exception despite the circumstances
No problem
But it’s going to pushed down. I’ve got two more posts scheduled.
Sept. 26, 2010 - 2013 Draft Kyle Padron Bandwagon
It's also nice to see a team with a true home field advantage!
Qwest Fiel….er…..Century Link Field is EFFing LOUD! It’d be great to see and hear that in Miami again. Seattle is just as fair weathered as Miami, but they still manage to fill the stadium and make it hell for the other team.
Seattle weather sucks
Miami is fair-weathered.. Seattle gets a lot of rain

Pete Carmichael
My plan is to rape two of the most successful teams of the last 5 years: GB and NO.
Everybody is allowed to interview and leave for a promotion, and contracts are voided in that event.
So we go after Reggie McKenzie (Director of Personnel) and John Dorsey (Director of College Scouting) from the Packers and make McKenzie the General Manager and Dorsey the Executive VP of Player Personnel. Since McKenzie has worked for years as the guy in charge of NFL and other professional scouting, and Dorsey has been in charge of college scouting, they can work together in the Personnel Department.
From there, I hire Pete Carmichael as my HC, and I think he probably keeps Nolan on board as DC. He can bring in a young OC and train him.

I think it's silly to think that I'm a bad fan just because I criticize the team
Especially since I pay good money just to watch the Dolphins. I give up some of my disposable cash to watch a 4-9 team get lit up on Monday night by a crappy Sanchez, get destroyed by Brady, lost to Colt McCoy… COLT FREAKIN MCCOY, look like a bad I-AA team against a weak Eagles team….. yet I’m not allowed to be critical???

Yeah I know what you're saying and I agree
but i think they mean it was too early to think we’d get the #1 pick. I’m not surprised we won’t, I think this team has much better talent than that. Plus, the Colts were and still are abysmally pathetic. The 2008 0-16 Lions would kill them by at least 20 points.

I believe that guy and I got into it over that
I said that a 7-9 season would be a disaster and if we can’t finish with 11 wins, then we might as well not finish with any. Better to win the draft, than finish 7-9. And of course that was another reason I was a “bad fan”. Right… because all “good” fans love 7-9 seasons. LOL

Oh yeah for sure
But I think you grab the best one possible.. In this case the 2nd one possible cuz i think Luck will cost too much. I don’t understand some people saying we should draft one later on… I mean if you’re looking for a serviceable back up behind a superstar then sure… But not when you’re looking for a potential superstar himself.
by phinsphan85 on Dec 12, 2011 10:49 PM EST up reply actions
He's good, but not as good as Luck
if there was a season to be abysmal, this was it. Of course the Colts understood that and their fans understood it as well. I’m sure if Luck is winning some SBs in the future, they won’t care about this season at all.

Just like Detroit could care less about 2008 this season
However, I think the Colts fans were wrong to wear those jerseys at the stadium. They have a QB needless to say. We wouldn’t have done that while Marino was out with his achilles in ‘93.. At least I’d like to think we wouldn’t.

Nope, because only you take it personally, imo you thinking I was mad on either occasion is really quite funny.
Trust me, you havent seen me mad. Cuban Italian with a bit of Irish sprinkled in, retired marine AND a Catholic to boot, lol you havent seen mad….
Now cut me in traffic before ive had my morning smoke and coffee, then you’ll see mad, lol.
As for what I said, I still hold the opinion and it was generalized, and not just geared towards either of you. You both just managed to take it personally. I mean, i expect it from Nicky, who was outsized and outmached by an Oompa Loompa, but Ive also seen his negativity brewing ever since Ross messed up last years coach search.
You on the other hand, have just recently entered that area imo, but truth is, i guess you two and I have two seperate opinions on how a fan should act, considering how neither of us know each other, i will give you the benefit of the doubt.
As for telling you to do something about it, there are more ways to do so than simply buying the team, i for one am going to school to get a BA in sports management and a minor in physical education in hopes to get a job either coaching or in personnel. THATS what I meant.
Either way, if you two can live with the way you “support” your team, who am I to judge.

And for the record, there is a difference between being critical and being negative
I have had my moments of negativity on here. But for the most part, I am fairly positive. However, I will be very critical if I see things I don’t agree with. I think being critical is part of being a good fan. It doesn’t mean I don’t support the team, it means I care even more about what they do and how they play.

good guy, bad coach. Sad to see that it worked out that way, but it happened, and I’m glad that he’s not our HC anymore.
As far as the #1 pick, I’m against trading up to 1, only because Indy is going to set that price so high. I’m all in on Griffin at this point because a) he’s awesome, and b) the price difference between him and Luck is huge as far as what has to be given up.

I’d much rather let Soliai leave and save that huge contract. Switch to a 4-3 and let Langford/Starks/Odrick/McDaniel be the DT rotation. I’d go after Avril hard and start him and Wake at DE, with Merling dropping some weight and getting in that rotation.
Maybe Misi can make an impact as the SAM backer in a 4-3, but if not, I’m cool with Dansby, Burnett, and maybe a Sean Spence? in the bottom of round 2. (I’m trading down in round 2 to get a later 2 and a 3).
Nail Grimes (my favorite of the FA’s) and start him opposite Vontae with Smith either playing the nickel/specialty CB or moving, and finding a FS somewhere (Ray Ray Armstrong in Round 3 if available lol).

Also, and this might sound weird, but I cannot overstate my excitement about the prospect of getting Merling back into the 4-3. He had to gain way too much weight to play in the 3-4, and it fucked with him. He’s a power DE in the 4-3, and I think you’d see him kick holy ass in that role.

Odrick can get into the backfield, and he’s built like a 4-3 power DT. Starks/Langford/McDaniel would be solid adds, as well. Langford and McDaniel at DT would look like Henderson and Stroud in Jacksonville a few years ago. Good luck seeing over the middle of that defensive line.

If we move to a 4-3, might as well kiss Langford goodbye...
People wonder why we drafted Odrick, it is because it allowed for flexibility on the Dline, and became an insurance policy in case Soliai didnt pan out. Merling seemed like a bust, and Langford is a better 3-4 DE. It would have made for an easy transition, and besides, Nolan likes the ability to be flexible in his fronts.
It just worked out somewhat with Soliai, in that it gave us added depth along the DE position, and allowed for us to rest our guys when it came time to.
That and we didnt know the status of McDaniels contract, again Merling would have been stuck as our primary backup in case Starks or Langford, or even worse Soliai went down with injury.
by dolphinfan4lyfe on Dec 13, 2011 12:25 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Why would we dump Langford in the 4-3?
We need more depth, and the reason for the switch would be a) new coaching staff = new defense most of the time, and b) Soliai wants a big contract, and I personally wouldn’t pay it.
Langford would be great in a 4-3, because he could play the 3-tech DT or the strong side DE. Odrick, same thing, as well as being a nice fit for the 1-tech. McDaniels can play either DT position, and I would make him a priority to re-sign. Merling would be able to drop back down to his college weight of 275 and move back to his natural position as a 4-3 DE. Same for Cameron Wake, who could go back to a weakside 4-3 DE and be a primary pass rusher only, something that needs to be done as he ages.
Starks also came from a 4-3 scheme and is a nightmare at the 3-tech. Plus, with all the 3-4 DE experience our DT’s would have, we could really move them around and play 2-gap schemes, similar to how Nolan likes to run that hybrid 3-4/4-3.
With a DE rotation of Cliff Avril (FA signing), Cam Wake, Phil Merling, and Odrick at times, we are good. We have pass rushers and playmakers on the edge. And with a DT rotation of Odrick, Langford, Starks, and McDaniel, we have 4 starting caliber DT’s to run in and out. Our DL personnel fits so much better in a 4-3 scheme outside of Soliai, and I’d rather let him walk and throw some of the money he would demand at Avril and upgrade at pass rusher.

I cant dig what finsnation has to say, one thing ive had to be proud of is that this team didnt tuck their tail and hide.
Sorry, call me all the rose colored glasses, and whatnot, but I still think rooting for your own team to lose for better draft position constitutes being a bad fan, or no fan at all.
That would be like me advocating a room full of nba players to be allowed to walk on stilts whenever nicky is in the room….. Some things just arent right.
by dolphinfan4lyfe on Dec 13, 2011 12:35 AM EST via mobile reply actions
don't start with that "bad fan" bullshit again
Because I can counter with you being a bad fan because you want us to win meaningless games and decrease our chances at getting a Franchise QB. But that would get me castrated at this site, so I won’t say it.
At 0-7, our season was over. Fair? Would you agree that at 0-7, the playoffs are out of the question and we are no longer contending for a championship? So in that case, what is the benefit of 4 wins? I see none. I take a long-term approach, and feel like the best way for us to contend for multiple years is to get a Franchise QB, and the single BEST way to get a Franchise QB is to draft high in the first round. I feel like rooting for 0-16 out of spite is being a bad fan. But rooting for 7-9 out of pride is being a bad fan as well IMO. But when the goals for your season are already failed halfway in, why is it a bad thing to say “scrap this season and find a way to fix this team for next year and beyond”? I’ve never gotten a good answer as to why it’s considered being a bad fan to DESPERATELY WANT this team to contend for Super Bowls for a decade+.
Also, if NBA players were on stilts, I’d have a chance lol. Those things are impossible to stand up on.

Nicky, get off your "low horse"
I didnt call anyone out little guy, but maybe I should.
Youve been bitching since john beck didnt turn out to be the answer, always negative, always acting like youre better than everyone because you coach a pop warner team.
Look, I cant help that your players are taller than you. I cant help that your upset about it.
What I can help is that youve been the biggest source of negativity on this site since before we went 0-7. Yes, BEFORE.
The only thing weve been able to agree on is that yes, the team was done after they lost the first seven games, how we cant agree is how we react to it.
Yes, I am at fault for wanting to see the good guy make it. Yes, I am at fault for wanting to have a sliver of hope that we werent looking at the same shit different day scenario we have grown accustomed to the past few years.
But what i am not guilty of is advocating my team lose the rest of the season while my pals chant for Orton during preseason, and another team is sporting luck jerseys while my HOF QB is still talking about coming back to help the team. That i cant agree with, and i was mainly talking about that guy cussing his way to throwing a temper tantrum cuz his feel good field of dreams moment went away….
" If you tank it, he will come"
Yes, i think advocating losses for a better draft position constitutes being a bad fan. Name one other year when this was okay, and i will shut up about it. That is why i said in another post that Andrew Luck has become a cancer without even doing anything. Because his name is associated with everything that takes away from the integrity of the game.
Enough so that the NFL makes it illegal to do so unless you happen to be indianapolis.
If you feel affronted, or that you need to speak up, then feel free. But dont check your conscience at the door because i sure as hell wont. Its not hard to argue against sound morals. Unless your name is Jeff Ireland.
Truth is, dick joke giy epitomizes whats wrong with todays fans in the first place. Not to mention, that he is simply the vocal box for the ill informed. I put about as much trust in his words as i do rex ryans, as a matter of fact, id say he is our version of fireman ed or whatever his name is.

and stop bringing up my coaching
You’re the only one. I don’t bring it up NEARLY as much as you do except in the context of a conversation about it. I don’t use it to hold myself in higher regard than anyone, and I am never “holier than thou.” I’m probably more self-deprecating than most people on this site, and I’m quick to admit when I’m factually incorrect. But keep talking about me, it feeds the ego.
All I did was tell you my opinion and lay out my reasoning. I defended my fanhood against you and others who continually label me and all the other fans who are tired of 7-9 every year as bad fans. I defended the logic of rooting for the team to get a Franchise QB instead of winning 5 games this year. And you counter with a rant about how I bitch and think I’m hot shit for coaching youth football? I’m not always negative, but when you have 3 straight losing seasons, you’re damn right I’m gonna be negative. Because the team is irrelevant. And I love this team more than anything else in sports, and more than quite a few more important things in my life. So don’t question if I’m a fan, ever.
I’m tired of being nice and lol’ing my way around being called a shit fan. Fuck that. Check my record. I’ve supported this team since the day I could speak. I’ve spent money I didn’t have to watch this team play. I’ve probably written a few paychecks with the merchandise I’ve bought. But I’m a bad fan because i hate losing seasons? Please. Play that act for somebody else. I’m done with you.

Seriously, no one here should have their fanhood questioned.
A lot of people didn’t support Tony Sparano because he’s one of the few remnants of Bill Parcells’ semi-disastrous stay in Miami. Count me as one of those people. I still watch the Dolphins every Sunday, but I just didn’t have the kicked-in-the-balls feeling after losses this year. Why? Because I wanted the current regime gone. By adhering to Bill Parcells’ prehistoric approach to football, they set us back a good five or six years. No way in hell am I going to support the people making my favorite team (in all of sports, mind you) shitty. No, thank you.
Honestly, if losing some games means we’re going to get Robert Griffin III in a Dolphins uniform, then bring on the losses. And why on Earth would we be wrong to pull for losses when Stephen Ross just canned his head coach with three games left on the schedule? I get the impression he isn’t aching for wins over the next three weeks, either.
Nevertheless, we’re all fans of the Dolphins. Just because you enjoy playing for an 8-8 record every year doesn’t make you any better than someone who wanted to lose for Andrew Luck, and vice-versa. Just remember that we all own gear with the same colors on it. No need for friendly fire.
Pilot of the "Stiffin' for Griffin III in 2012" Fleet
I support Occupy Joe Robbie
No one said i enjoy the 8-8 record, i just dont advocate the idea that we should attempt to make it 0-16 for a stupid draft pick to aqquire a guy that hasnt even attempted a freaking pro scout day.
Also, in my opinion, a person should be supportive. Watching this team lose week after week is like watching my favorite uncle die of lukemia when i was 8 years old. Yes it fucking kills me, but in the end, i want to see him get better if even for a day, just to say he had a moment with no pain.
It is a harsh comment, perhaps a bit drastic, but i have cared for this team since the day i laid eyes on them. Just like i cared for my uncle when i was younger.
I dont know, you have your ways of rooting for the team, but rooting them to fail is not even close to what some people would call a good fan. Pardon the selfishness of wanting to see someone feel like the end isnt at hand, or that all they had worked for was meaningless horseshit.
I actually ENJOYED the fact that these guys had a little pride to their step, even after 1-7, 2-7, 3-7, 3-8, & 4-8.
I liked that people stepped up and took blame for their losses and held themselves accountable, because in the thick of things, they may become better players and thatll mean one less piece to the puzzle.
No offense, but I will take 53 guys proud about a single win, more than i will ever take 53 guys elated that they scored the top draft pick, because that means they ALL dont need to go next year, and were not perhaps that far off after all.
by dolphinfan4lyfe on Dec 13, 2011 3:02 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Enough with the "good fan" business. It's self-righteous and completely unnecessary
This isn’t indie music here, and we sure as hell don’t need to be crawling over each other to see who can become the purest fan of all. That’s bullshit. If you love a team, you love a team. And if you want to get a kick-ass draft pick to secure a player who you believe can take you to 10 Super Bowls, that makes you no worse than some guy who thinks players on his favorite team should all be company men and never, ever want more money or playing time. It’s all subjective, but terms like “bad fan” are pretty much garbage. I support the Dolphins 100 percent, but in no way supported their current regime. Send me to NFL fan purgatory if you must, but just know that “great” San Antonio Spurs fans were ALL ABOUT tanking prior to the 1997 draft. And then they landed Tim Duncan. Pretty sure that pick worked out for them.
