NFL Fines Miami Dolphins Richie Incognito and Cameron Wake

This hit may have resulted in Cameron Wake being fined $15,000, but it's still a great picture.

The NFL had a busy week following the Week 13 games, with multiple fines being levied across the league. Three of those fines came from the Oakland Raiders at Miami Dolphins game this past Sunday.

The first of the three fines was for Oakland's Richard Seymour, who appeared to punch Dolphins' guard Richie Incognito. Seymour was ejected from the game, and the league fined him $30,000 for the incident.

But, the league also turned its attention toward the Dolphins as well.

Incognito picked up a $7,500 fine for his role in the incident with Seymour, while linebacker Cameron Wake was fined $15,000. The Wake fined was levied for his hit on Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer, which was deemed a roughing the passer penalty for hitting Palmer in the head and neck area.

He clearly popped the faceguard,

and it’s not like Palmer is ducking his head there. So, I disagree. I don’t like the fines in the first place, penalties are enough of a deterrent, but as long as fines are happening then I see that as a legit fine.

his head is buried in the guys chest

fines should be for intentional flagrant penalties. during the game, the announcers didnt believe that it should have even been a penalty.

Money

Where does all this money go exactly for all these bullshit fines. I know some are warranted, I.e.- Suh, but what about the 70% that are unwarranted. Some of these should not even be penalties, much less fines. Maybe in a few years these pansies will be playing touch football. Hardly no more padded practices, can’t hit nobody. I never thought I would say this, but they are starting to turn me away from the game I have played and loved all my life. These guys get paid millions and don’t want to earn it. Softer practices, no hitting, etc. WNBA players are tougher than some of these pansies. How about Revis avoiding contact with Tebow? If he was the best as everyone proclaims then he would have gave 100% effort to make that tackle. Way to expose that pansy Tebow-lol.

The money goes into a pool

Which gets divided between retired players and other charities, as agreed upon by the NFL and the NFLPA. The letter that gets sent to player, informing him of the fine, also details where the money is going.

OMG Wake got fined for that?!?!

The hit where he was getting up after being cut blocked and his momentum took him into Palmer. The bottom of Palmers face mask is the only thing that got hit not his head. Wow I’d be pissed if I were Wake and then next time I’ll make it count

exactly it wa sby no means intentional

Ironically this is a result of defenders not being allowed to make a tackle from their knees if they have been knocked down.

NFL needs to employ the services of past player(s) or coaches to rule on flagrant hits

Someone like Ditka, Ronnie Lott, and even Marino will make more just decisions.

They currently have a former executive for the Falcons/former agent as one of two who levy fines.

The other is a former 49ers Safety, who is a four-time Pro Bowler, 3 x All-Pro, and 1 x Super Bowl winner. Merton Hanks.

if wake gets a fine that big for his hit, harrison should be ejected for the rest of the season for that hit on mccoy

Playing high school (jv) football, I’ve experianced plenty of helmet-to-helmet hits as both a QB, HB and WR. I know how painful it is and I have gotten 2 concussions in my 2 years of football from that. Even on when I play defense (SS, ILB), I try to avoid helmet-to-helmet hits, knowing how much they hurt.

The thing is...

When two players are at certain heights, when one is going low, he is probably face to face with someone. You cant stop and think. These fines are ridiculous. But hey, it’s not like they can not afford it.

How about they improve the helmet, instead of changing the game of football altogether.

theres not much to improve, other than to make them military combat helmets

Football helmets are already some of the most advanced sports helmetss in the world.

Are you kidding me??

$15,000 for doing his job? Seriously?? I watched that replay extensively up here in Canada on TSN sports, and every commentator I heard said it was a clean hit!! Period!! Did he go for his knees?? Hell, no, Camerons not that kind of player. Did he do the Detroit “stomp” on his arm, like someone I know not too far from Toronto Ont., near where I’m from…HELL No, that was gutless. Cean hit, no intent to injure at all. This is crap, these guys are trained to hit hard and clean. Aren’t these the big bad tough Raiders, as Howie Long goes on endlessly about? Grrrrrr A dog murder gets to play after committing unspeakable crimes to helpless animals, and Cameron gets fined for doing his job!!! Come on officials re-review that play and do the right thing. Keep it up Cameron…DO YOUR THING….crush the dog killer tomorrow.

I can’t believe wake got fined for that. It was clearly unintentional. Should they put dresses on on play two hand touch? Or maybe flag since touching someone is too violent?

BS

I remember the situation.
Wake was rushing Palmer and was cut-blocked, so he fell to the ground a yard away from Palmer.
Wake was going for a sack, but at the same time, was trying to be 100% sure he’d be hitting Palmer above the knees.
So, from the ground, Wake lunged TO Palmer and UP well above the waist, and his helmet made contact with Palmer’s chest, while he began wrapping up Palmer with his arms. So far so good.
Unfortunately, when Wake lunged UP from the ground away from Palmer’s fragile knees, he created momentum upwards, so that when he hit Palmer’s chest, instead of having only horizontal momentum, he had some vertical momentum going up, so his head slid from Palmer’s chest to the bottom part of Palmer’s facemask after most of the force of the hit was transferred to Palmer’s chest.

My point is that’s not a helmet to helmet hit. That’s a helmet-to-chest-with-slight-richochet-up-to-the-bottom-of-a-facemask" hit.

When James Harrison hit Colt McCoy, 100% of Harrison’s momentum was horizontal and aimed from Harrison’s helmet directly at McCoy’s helmet. In this case, most of Wake’s force was against Palmer’s chest, with some force upwards towards Palmer’s chin.

The Irony

The Irony here is that this all happened because offensive linemen are allowed hit below a defensive player’s knees, but a defensive player can’t hit a QB beneath his knees.

If Wake hadn’t been tripped up, he would be upright and would have been able to hit Palmer squarely in the chest.
If the rules didn’t prevent hits beneath the QB’s knees, Wake wouldn’t have had to lunge upwards so much after falling to the ground, so Palmer wouldn’t have received any helmet-to-helmet contact.
