Here It Is In A Nut-Shell
The season for the Phins is now officially over, no more running the table talk and going into the playoffs. I was honestly one of the few members on here that honestly thought we can still have made the playoffs; I now realize I was thinking with my heart and not with my head. I guess that comes with age, fans start thinking with their heads. Oh well, now I can start focusing on our needs as a team without being blinded by false hope.
I really want to make this about our most pressing needs and issues as a team.
Without question we need a quarterback and the good news is Matt Moore is a perfect bridge to a new young quarterback, unless we sign Matt Flynn or somebody like that.
So we got the first and most important issue out of the way.
I know a lot of Dolphins fans what a new wide receiver or a better pass-catching Tight-end. I’m not being prisoner of the moment when I say that we are okay at those positions. I always liked Anthony Fasano and now we have Charles Clay who is a rookie but emerging. I also realize that Brandon Marshall dropped some several Touchdowns this season, especially early on which cost us a few games. At the same time he is not a pressing issue with me or any other receivers we have. I always like Brian Hartline and Davone Bess, I honestly believe that Clyde Gates can be a deep threat and he has gotten A LOT BETTER ON KICKOFF RETURNERS. Gates can be good. Remember not everybody can have a receiving core like Green Bay.
I’m satisfied with our running-backs; Reggie is showing heart and not going down after first contact. Daniel Thomas can be really good for us, especially since he is getting better at blitz pick-up. Our Special-Teams has impressed me this year; I thought in my heart of hearts they would cost us some games like last year.
If there is one major problem I have with our Defense is the Pass-rush, plain and simple. Our secondary has gotten better, run stopping is better, and line-backing core got better. I know people was talking about why Mike Nolan been playing a lot of zone this year or zone blitz, simple we have no Pass-rush. In my opinion our corners are not that bad, especially since Sean Smith has gotten worked this year and is still getting absolutely abused week in and week out. I have been a big supporter of Will Allen but it can be argued that he cost us at least 2 or 3games this year; Cleveland, Denver, Giants, and Dallas; in all of those games he was either sent on a blitz the last drive of the game to win or stop the moment and the Quarterbacks faked him out OR he was picked apart in the last drive of the game.
I believe Pass-rush is our second biggest problem behind the QB issue. Last year Cameron Wake teased us, he made us believe he can be a dominant pass rusher year in and year out. I honestly don’t know if Wake regressed or if nobody else is stepping up to help him out, but me I put the biggest weight on him because when I look at teams like Green Bay or Dallas that has only one legitimate Pass-rusher, the dominate Pass-rusher is effective on either side. Cameron Wake is always on the right of the Offensive formation and he is never effective on the left or when he’s doing twists and stunts on the Line like Clay Matthews or DeMarcus Ware. I’m a huge fan of Wake but I put a lot of the credit of the lack of pass rush on him and I don’t want too because I am a fan, so if anybody can give me a legit reason not too, I’m all ears.
Finally our O-Line is at least tied with the second problem behind our QB situation or is undoubtedly third behind the pass rush issue. I honestly think our Line could be easier to fix when compared to the other issues on the team. We have a good Left-Tackle and Center. We will need to address the Right-Tackle, Left and Right Guards. There will be some good Guards on the start of Free agency or Nate Garner and the rest of the Guards on our roster will have to step up. As far as Right-Tackle goes I believe Lydon Murtha can be pretty good RT.
I hope the Dolphins start to become a more Zone Blocking scheme when they run the ball next year, for no other reason than I believe that the Zone run blocking scheme is more effective than the Man to Man run blocking scheme Tony Sparano goes with.
I’m highly disappointed with our beloved Dolphins but it is what it is, I believe in letting the season take it natural course. If we win games I’ll be happy, if we lose games I’m okay with it because it helps with the draft position.
It sucks when you have no hope for the rest of the season…
What can I say ignorance was bliss at the time but when you gain some competence about the season, your world comes tumbling down…
But still, I’m a Dolphin till the death of me

I agree pass rushing is killing us, I have been saying it all year
Tom Brady was able to rip us apart because he literally had as much time as he wants to throw the ball. Even the top corners in the league can not stop an offense if the QB has that much time. If the pressure gets to the QB sooner, our corners will have a much better opportunity to break down the passing plays.
couldn't have said it better myself
And it showed yesterday when Tony Romo had all the time in the world and our secondary still made him look bad with no pass rush…..
PHINS FAN FOR LIFE....
i agree, ive been saying since midway last season..........
that we have no legitimate pass rushers, other than wake. taylor is past his prime. odrick may emerge as a big time pass rusher, but i think he still needs time. we need to address the pass rush thru free agency. a safety with some ball hawking skills would help us alot. also, our o line is horrible, some good key fa pickups should help us immediatley. finally, our recivers: other than marshall, there is no other threat to scare the defense. hartline and bess are always falling down on routes. we need a legitimate #2 reciever, and we need gates to develop immediately. we need to utilize his speed out there.

success has many fathers, failure is an orphan.
Actually, a few of Romo's passes were completed because of the skill of the reciever
Like the one where Starks had a hand on Romos arm, there were a couple of times where Romo was also saved by a shovel pass because the defender was right there.
Truth is, when you go back and watch, there were a few plays where it left you wondering how the hell Romo did it. Here is a clue, it WASN’T Romo. Well, not completely. Demarco Murray caught a shovel pass he turned into a first down.
Whitten made a few plays where it made Romo look like Bledsoe.
The fade in the end zone to old boy for his second touchdown. Romo was constantly being saved from looking like an average QB by his supporting cast. That is a fact.
Those kind of passes have absolutely nothing to do with the pressure our front seven is putting on the QB, it has everything to do with our corners getting help from the free safety and people covering their men.
There seemed to be a lot of free lancing going on yesterday, people getting off there guys in order to prevent the big play. While this is good, it is no longer so when the guy that has been left open has the ability to make the big play. IE Demarco Murray, Jason Whitten, etc.
The final thought on this, is that the schedule took its toll on the defense. No rest plus beimg spread thin equals too many mistakes and not enough energy to regroup.
Romo had 5 guys that he could depend on to save the play, six if you count their FB, IMO, that left our D a little short changed and spread thin.
FS should be first on the defenses Christmas list, not another pass rusher, imo and this behind QB and Oline.
To be quite frank, if we cant move up, and the qbs meant to go in the first round are taken, we need to focus one last time on oline, and not try to create a playmaker where one does not exist.

you made some great points
I see and understand where your coming from but at the same time, I’m not talking about just the Dallas game, I’m talking about the entire year.
The secondary started out terrible and now they’re less then average but through the year the pass rush started out terrible and stayed terrible.
I believe if you have a dominate pass rush it makes up for the secondary
PHINS FAN FOR LIFE....
It would be nice
To get a coverage sack every once in awhile.

exactly my point there phins93.
we did not sack romo enough. he had alot of time back there. nolan has to use lb’s, cb’s and safeties on blitzes to generate pressure. that is really not necessary if you can generate pressure with your front four. dallas had pressure on moore often and sacked him several times. our secondary can only cover for so long, the pass rush has to be effective. this was evident during the game. no pressure whatsoever, we will need to address this in the offsseason.

I agree with you about the sacks
But we kept pressure on Romo all night. He made a couple great escapes to help extends plays. As Phins93 staed in his post Romo got a lot of help from his teamates.

You're right
It was you and you’re on point. Wake could easily have double digit sacks. He’s right there on a lot of plays. He just needs to convert. I still see him with 10+ sacks by the end of the season.

which also brings to mind both points
With free safety help, you can blitz with the CB’s. Imo, we shouldnt be using Will Allen either. Vontae is our most aggressive in the stable, but in order to use him, we have to be able to get someone to give him a shot.
A free safety not only allows Smith to cover Vontaes man, but it allows him to rush from the side opposite Wake, or with him. Blocking two guys coming at the QB from the same side creates a tight area which instantly has to be covered by the tight end. This kills two birds with one stone.
Add Randy Starks in the equation, and you have a vacuum which negates the entire left side of the offense. Or right, depending on which side you utilize this system.
A ball hawk also allows the use of Bell on certain downs, effectively allowing us to blitz 3- 4 people at a time.
A lot of our problems arent from the fact that we cant get to the QB, but are because we are having to use our linebackers in coverage. This can be cured with a legitimate free safety.

Free agency also holds the answer to our pass rush problems
Sign Anthony Spencer " yes a Cowboy" to compliment Wake, and address the CB issue as well with adding Cortland Finnegan. Who is a little upset at the lack of contract extension talks. Giving us a veteran with a nasty streak to push one of our tandem into playing nickel.
by dolphinfan4lyfe on Nov 26, 2011 12:35 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Add Aubreyo Franklin, a player that excelled under Mike Nolan to that list as well
Cutting nearly 5-7 mil in cap space to sign Langford to a long term deal, and if we play our cards right, it could leave us to sign my dream FA pick up, Desean Jackson.
With so many players leaving due to free agency, admit it. A Wide reciever core featuring Brandon Marshall, Desean Jackson, Davone Bess, Brian Hartline and Clyde Gates would make us the most feared in the league, as well as give our offense the explosiveness that our team is lacking at the WR position. Not to mention it would be a prime stable of weapons for any QB we have at the helm.
by dolphinfan4lyfe on Nov 26, 2011 1:48 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I agree Jackson would be an excellent pickup
But he would cost us BM type of money. That’s a lot of money for 2 WR’s,but I would love this move. He would also be the answer to the return game.

Sometimes you gotta risk it to get the bisquit
While expensive, a move like this would signify that we are serious about having a more explosive offense. This would be the move for our owner to stop having to buy 10-15 thousand seats to put us on tv.
Honestly, you get rid of the dead weight contracts, and it is financially feasible. Not to mention the type of talent.it would allow us to bring in the future for less money i might add.
I believe a four year, 34 million dollar contract gets it done. Starting 7 mil. And escalating a million each year until the contract runs out.
Honestly, could you come up with a better plan to put fans in the stands than an offense that features: Marshall, Jackson, Bess, Hartline, Bush, Fasano, Clay, Thomas, Gates, and RG III?
We would instantly rival the packers on Offense.

I love jackson
thats a guy who could really bring some spirit to this miami team. He’s a good player…..if he’s happy. With the crappy season there having over there in philly, he got benched for being such a downer. And if theres one thing you gotta be able to take in miami, its disappointment.

Look I agree about having a ballhawk at free safety, but a lack of pass rush will make a ballhawk safety irrelevant, if the QB have all day to throw and never gets pressured even the Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu will be negated…
Pressure the QB and the ballhawks will show up, dont pressure the QB the ballwaks will get picked apart…..
PHINS FAN FOR LIFE....
yes but if you dont have that threat, and wrs are left open
Even a moderate QB can make a play.
Look at Green Bay. 1 pass rusher. We on the other hand do have 2.
A free safety and solid CB play gives the pass rush more time. More time= more sacks.
Tell me, how many times in the Dallas game Romo got the pass off even though a defender had a hand on him? Solid play from the FS even against Demarco Murray, and we dont have to push so many LB’s into coverage.
So many sacks could have been had if we simply didnt have to use 3 LB’s in coverage.
Wake, Dansby, Burnett, Starks, Odrick have ALL prooven they can get to the QB. That leads me to believe that the pass rush help is already here, as opposed to the FS which is not. That is what leads me to think that the secondary is what needs the most improvement.

everybody has valid points here.
if only ross would listen to us. lol. fact of the matter is, gentlemen, that free agency will be ket this offseason. we can improve greatly, almost overnight, by bringing the right free agency. ross is gonna have to open up his wallet and bring in quality free agents. the draft does not hold all our answers. we can get a few players there, hopefully a first round qb. but free agency will be the key. lets hope ross knows it as well.

success has many fathers, failure is an orphan.
Wake is still getting pressure on the quarterback. Sacks aren't the only sign that we are disrupting the quarterback.
I agree that we need more pressure, but wake is still performing at an extremely high level.

This is true. Wake has not regressed.
Cameron Wake is the #1 Rated 3-4 OLB by ProFootballFocus. Ahead of Clay Matthews, Ware, Harrison, Hali, etc… He leads all 3-4 OLB with 36 QB Pressures, is 2nd with 13 QB hits and is tied for 5th with 7 sacks.
I keep hearing that Wake has regressed. That is absolutely false. He is as dominant as he was last year rushing the passer. His sack numbers are down but his QB Pressure and QB Hit numbers are leading the league.
He is also the highest ranked 3-4 OLB in the PENALTY category which means he draws holding penalties and doesn’t get penalties called on him.

We are pressuring QB’s and forcing turnovers.
