Keys to the Cowboys game on Turkey Day

I don't know about all of you fin fans, but I'm pumped for this Turkey Day match-up between our beloved Dolphins and the hated Dallas Cowboys. The biggest reason I'm pumped for this game is that the Dolphins seemed to have figured some things out on offense and defense, and special teams are definitely improved as well. Adding to this is the fact that the Cowboys are tied for their division lead and are clearly the best team we've played in the last 4 games.

To me, there are 5 keys to the Dolphins pulling out an upset win on Thursday. In what I believe are the most important to the least important:

1. Get pressure on Romo right up the gut. Romo is a lot like Tom Brady. He loves to stand in the pocket unbothered and pick out his targets. He doesn't mind drifting right or left either, so I believe we need to contain him in the pocket and get in his face. He's due for a "Oh no, Romo" type of game.

2. Limit the big plays by the Cowboys offense. The Dolphins defense has definitely stepped up in recent games, but this has happened against less than stellar offenses. To win, we must not allow the huge gains in the passing game and Jason Witten is the guy we absolutely HAVE to contain.

3. Keep a balance on offense. Moore has been running the play action at a high level lately. We must hand off to Bush and Thomas, mix in some screens and swing passes, and continue to work the seam with Clay and Fasano. We proved in the last game that we don't have to target BMarsh 15 times a game to be successful -- get everyone involved and keep the Cowboys D on it's heels.

4. Keep Moore clean. We all know the biggest challenge here will be DeMarcus Ware. Colombo will need help, Dallas will also bring the heat with blitzes and other looks. Moore has to be smart and know when to tuck it and run and also when to just throw it away.

5. Win the turnover battle. While I believe this is important, I think the Dolphins have progressed enough in the last few games that even if we lose this battle by 1 turnover, I believe we can still win this game. However, getting a key turnover might give our offense a much needed short field to increase our chances of victory.

Okay, you decide. Which of the above is most important to insure a Dolphins victory? Happy Thanksgiving to everyone on the Finsiders!

Limiting Whitten will be the difference in this game

This probably sounds crazy, but i would blanket Whitten with Sean Smith all day to avoid his burnign our linebackers. Jimmy Wilson and Nolan Carrol have shown me enough to make me confident in shutting down Dez Bryant. Speaking of Dez Bryant, what does your dad do for a living? He’s a Piiimp… Ok, What does your mother do for a living? She works for my Dad da piimp… Ok, sooooooo….. I still see nothign wrong with Irelands question about his mother given his responses to the previous questions. She is probably one of the riches tricks around now though. booyyeeee..

Go Dolphins and beat those Cowboys!

I voted the same.

Although turnovers was a close second…..

I thought DezGate was media hype too but you’ll probably hear from a few of our resident “LoveDezHateTheFO” crowd……

9-7 and playoffs baby!!! Why not get drunk on the Kool-Aid? You Suck4Luck bastards aren't buying me any beers..............

i feel like winning the turnover battle is a given

i may be alone on this, but i would like to see more of Jimmy Wilson out there. He may get burned, but he does make some good plays. I think he has more ints than Smith also.

I completely agree with what you are saying about Jason Witten.

He is an outstanding player who poses serious problems for any defense he faces. In another post I talked at length about Witten and the problems that he presents. In my somewhat incoherent post I said:

“As you mentioned earlier the first issue is figuring out what exactly to do about Jason Witten. He is absolutely lethal and may very well be the best Tight End we have faced all season (even including the frightening Rob Gronkowski). The yhave some similarities in body type and syle but Witten has more experience. He understands all zone coverage concepts and he recognizes defensive formations with a keen eye. He is lean and fast but also has awesome physical stature and power. As the old saying goes "As a defensive coach you can Roll speed, bracket quickness, but against immense frame, disciplined body positioning and ball skills you can either get beat or interfere." Witten is that good and its hard to put to much emphasis on him because the Cowboys have so many other weapons. One thing that i know teams have done with him and something ive seen teams do against Gates this season (notably KC on monday night week 8) is double him every snap in the redzone and shake up how you double him (what form of double coverage and with what personnel). Its a sacrifice that Nolan will consider. When we cover him man on Thursday it will mostly be with Burnet IMO, but Dansby, Mitchell and Sean Smith will all also get snaps against him.”

As for Dez Bryant I am more nervous about him than you are it seems. I preperation for the Bills last week i spent alot of time watchign them play over the few weeks prior on Game Rewind. So the Redskins, Jets and Cowboys games. What jumped out at me very quickly was how much a talented Bills secondary struggled to find any good matchups with Dez Bryant. Whether they covered him with Terrence McGee, Drayton Florence or Leodis McKelvin (and all three got snaps against him in man coverage) they struggled. He is similar in some ways to Brandon Marshall in his upper body size and ball skills. That type of reciever is incredibly hard to cover. Combined with the fact that The Bills were not able to put sufficient pressure on Romo and they were getting lit up.

As a defense we also have to be prepared for the deception the Cowboys use on offense (it isnt only the Ryan brothers). On example of a play is in the Bills game comes with 12.26 to play in the half, the Cowboys have just taken over after a missed field goal, first and ten with a 14-0 lead. The Cowboys came out in a trips set formation with Witten at the tip and at the line of scrimmage, Laurent Robinson behind and farther toward the sideline, Tony Fiametta at the bottom of the of the bunch formation. (Murray is the back and Dez Bryant is at the bottom of the screen single wide) The Bills are in an unbalanced 4-3 defense cheating toward the heavy side of the offesnive formation.Terrence Mcgee is covering Dez Bryant in press coverage at the bottom of the screen and Drayton Florence is playing zone at the top of the screen (fairly tpical response from an NFL defense to this look. The Bills are playing a two deep safety shell. Essentailly to make a long story short the Cowboys bring Fiametta in motion presnap to identify the coverage and send him into the flat which drags the outside linebacker (Danny Battan)with him. Witten runs an intermediate pattern into the middle of the field toward the first down marker through the zone coverage being played by Kelvin Sheppard and Geroge Wilson gets lured just a bit onto the route. Laurent Robinson runs a great route. Right at Drayton Florence and holds him in his zone, uses leverage and burns him with a double move. Drayton Florence and George Wilson both got out of position and payed the price for it badly. A well designed formation and play that froze the defense because of the unbalanced formation, good deception and intuitive sense upon the routes based on the look.
Our defense which relies so much on zone coverages has to be careful of these things.

Nice break down

Yeah Dez is of more concern to me as well. The kid is a beast. I listed pressure u p the middle as the most important aspect for the reason of trying to stime the Dallas passing game.
Putting a player in motion to reveal the defense is a staple of all the dynamic offenses these days. It would be nice to see the Dolphins employ similar measures.
Dallas can score. BM breaking out would really help the possibility of a win today.

Could not vote for just one because IMO the most important are both

protecting Moore and our D limiting big plays if we can do bnoth it will be a close game and one that I actually think we will win

Both wtf

but anyway I think it all comes down to our D if you think about it we could have won the Giants game Denver,Clevland and maybe the Texans game if our D played well enough in the fourt quarter and did not give up big plays

Put pressure on Romo

And the rest takes care of itself.

by sdelinois on Nov 23, 2011 1:30 PM EST reply actions

First I would take out Witten, TE's have prooven to be our kryptonite

Then I would take Felix Jones’ playmaking ability out of the game. Limit his yards and you force the O into being one dimmensional.

Then take Ware out of the picture. No sacks from him means they have to rely on an injury riddled secondary that is doing without Mike Jenkins.

Bottom line, focus on stopping their playmakers, and the rest will sort itself out.

Where is the All of the above button, mainly pressure on Ohno, and keep Whitten in check

and of course Keep Moore clean!!! Check bumps on the outside to Ware and Spencer hard ones. I would imagine we will see a lot of Thomas and Clay chipping from the back field, and then rolling off for dump passes, But what do I know I’m just a fan. Nice read!

Thanks for the compliment

I didn’t do an all of the above because I was looking for what everyone thought was THE key to the game. My post states that all of these are keys.

I listed getting pressure on Romo because an uncomfortable Romo has horrid games based on recent and not so recent history.

Totally forgot about Kevin Williams (U)

also BRock Marion is a cowboy in this game. We had no idea when we first watched it how good he would be for us.

You know what's really sad??????

We did all those things and still lost! You should have added score TDs not FGs when in the red zone.

I used to think I had a drinking problem.
So I stopped thinking.

Agree that we did most things

but I don’t think we got enough pressure up the gut on Romo. The pressure we got came from the edges and Romo eluded it long enough to complete some key passes in the 2nd half, and that doomed us in the end. From a lot of fans post-game comments I read, you would think we failed across the board. I thought the Fins played a complete game for the most part, and failed to make 1 or 2 key plays which was the difference between a W and an L. If our record going into this would have been 6-4 or 5-5, I think most fans would have said “great effort, tough luck”.

0-4 in the red zone on TD opportunities won’t win many games though.
