Ask Arrowhead Pride. Or don't, whatever. I'm bored at work.
I wonder if I'll leave that title, when I do hit "publish"?
Anyways, it's Wednesday and instead of doing my FY2012 Buisness plan, I thought I'd come over here and chat about football. I joined the Phinsider a couple years ago to talk Tyler Thigpen, so I already had a membership.
So here is the skinny on the 2011 Kansas City Chiefs
- Season started pretty much as shitty as a season can start. Can I say "shitty" here? We lost 2 lobsided games against the Bills and Lions.
- Week 3 started even shittier. We didn't have a first down until well into the 3rd quarter when Haley and Cassel had a verbal sideline confrontation. For whatever reason that seemed to spark the team. We lost week 3 on a last minute Cassel interception. That sucked
- Games 4-5-6 went swimingly. Beat the Colts with a dominant 2nd half, beat the Vikings rather handily, and then shutout the Kyle Boller/Carson Palmer/Terell Prior QB'd Raiders. That was A LOT of fun
- Game 7 was last Monday and since it was on prime time, I'm sure many of you saw it. I can see how it would be exciting for a non Chief or Bolt fan, but the game took 3 years off my life. Good times
Anyways the Chiefs are 4-3 after winning 4 straight. I see the Dolphins are...ummm....not doing as well. I watched that Tebow fiasco and well, that was pretty hard to watch. Sorry for bringing it up.
What can we expect from the Phins? Are you better than your record shows? Is there any momentum to be had from playing a good Giants team tight?
Moreover, is there anything you want to know from this Chiefs fan? I'm sure my comrades from AP will be by as well to chat.
Good luck Sunday.....YOUR GONNA NEED IT SUCKAS.

hey dude, thanks for making the post
How is your running game without charles, or are you mostly relying on cassel? Is the backup playing well or has that become a weakness? I know you guys drafted a number 2 reciever early to complement Bowe, I don’t remember his name off the top of my head, but how is he playing? How is your TE situation, is it something we should worry about? How is your D-line, our O-line is playing poorly, is it going to be a problem. Is cassel playing better? Which O-lineman will be on earthwake and do you think he would be able to stop him.
Sorry there are so many questions, but it should keep your mind off of work for a while. lol

No doubt.
How is your running game without charles, or are you mostly relying on cassel?
Meh. We are 8th or something, but when you go from #1 to #8 it seems to be a drop off. Thank God Jackie Battle came from off the scrap heap/Special teams ace to show he can be a good closer. He’ll never be a bell cow, but he’s better than a washed up Thomas Jones
I know you guys drafted a number 2 reciever early to complement Bowe, I don’t remember his name off the top of my head, but how is he playing?
Jonathan Baldwin. He has played 2 games, because he punched Thomas Jones and broke his thumb. First game he had some nice 1st down catches and on Monday he had 5-81-1 TD. Pretty good start as far as I’m concerned. He had some character issues in PITT, but has elite talent. We also signed Breaston who’s been a nice fit
How is your TE situation, is it something we should worry about?
Nothing to see here, carry on. Moeaki (Stud rookie TE) went out in preseason with an ACL
How is your D-line, our O-line is playing poorly, is it going to be a problem
Lines have been playing pretty well as of late. Oline is solid, if not spectacular and Dline have done a pretty good job hugging the olinemen to let Tamba Hali be a freak. Y’all better block him, dat dude is sick.
Is cassel playing better?
Sigh. Fine, I’ll take the corporate line: He’s our QB and the best we have, so I’ll support him
Which O-lineman will be on earthwake and do you think he would be able to stop him.
Brandon Albert. He struggled last week for some reason, but he’s had a pretty solid year. I anticipate Wake to get his, depending on who is on the other side, maybe we’ll keep a blocking TE in to chip him. Love watching ex-CFL’ers light up fools.

Way to dodge the question, craig.
I’m in agreement with all of his answers, except to the one about Cassel. I understand that he isn’t an elite QB. However, he has definitely been better the last few weeks. Even though his stat lines have not been spectacular, I’ve liked the progress with progressions and other aspects of his game he has been criticized for recently.
Do I think he can lead us to the playoffs single-handed? Absolutely not. But with an improving team around him, he is starting to show that he can utilize tools that are given to him (like a game-manager type of QB should be able to do).
Why can we never get a stud TE?

The running game has improved the last couple games with the emergence of Jackie Battle. God help us if we have to rely totally on Cassel.
Baldwin is the rookie WR and just returned from injury (his thumb picked a fight with Thomas Jones’ jaw and lost). He had a pretty good game this week, including a very nice TD grab.
TE is a concern with Moeaki out for the year, and the Chiefs will use a lot of 3 WR sets, especially with Baldwin healthy.
The D-line is playing good, especially against the run. Pass rush form the front 3 is not a big problem, but Hali is giving defenses nightmares. The Chiefs will mover him around to get the best match up, so I expect they will rush him away from Long quite a bit.
Cassel can makes some plays, especially if he has time and the running game is making the defense respect the ground game.
I hope that Wake is coming of the right side against Albert and not off the left side of the defense against Barry Richardson.
The views expressed by craig in calgary do not necessarily represent the views of all Canadians.
Let's see if i can do this...
1. Running game has been pretty bad… We get some yards, but IIRC we had our first rushing TD of the season on Monday night. Yeah. It’s not even that our backup is bad, we just call too many plays up the gut, which we’re not built for.
2. Jon Baldwin is his name, he’s been turning some heads here and there. Doesn’t get great separation but he’s 6’5" and has a huge vertical, if you saw our only passing touchdown on Monday night, that was Baldwin going up and getting the pass. He’s only played in two games but all indications are that he’ll be a good, talented wideout, especially if he gets to go up against smaller corners.
3. Our TE situation is pretty poor. We’ve got a ton of blockers and a guy in Leonard Pope that might be able to catch some passes just because he’s 6’9" and virtually uncoverable by most safeties and LBs. But don’t let that fool you, he’s not a talented pass catcher, even by NCAA standards. (12 receptions in 7 games for 88 yds, 1 TD. Yuck.)
4. Our D-line is starting to finally come together and be able to stop the run. We finally got some ability to plug gaps in the run game and let the linebackers make tackles behind the LOS. If you saw MNF, you saw our RT getting knocked to the ground several times by SD’s speed rushers. He’s good in run blocking, but can’t hold down a pass rusher as well as he’s been asked to do for the last two years. Other than him, we are pretty decent at protecting Cassel. If Wake can line up at LOLB, he could probably have a field day. Expect one of our many blocking specialists (AKA tight ends) to help out on that side.
Our D-line doesn't have any big names, but they get the job done
They have been good at bringing some pressure at times, but mainly they clog up the line to allow the linebackers to make an impact. It’s going to take a concerted effort to stop Hali, and from what you are saying, your QB may spend quite a few plays on his back.
thanks to all 4 of you
Just to get this straight though, your WR injured himself punching someone else in the face? What a fail.

Yeah what a turd
no joke he could have been a huge difference the first three weeks of the season. The way they use him now is as a TE coming out of the slot so he essentially replaced our super legit TE who is out for the year
BOOM!
It's Thomas Jones and his face is just another bicep.
Guy is huge, there’s no shame in getting injured there.

Thanks for stopping by
and answering our questions. The Chiefs are a solid team and it must be nice to be in the running for a playoff spot. Us Dolfans are torn between our pride and our desire for some Luck.
Some questions: Do you feel Cassel can lead the Chiefs to a Super Bowl this year or in the near future? What is the biggest strength of the Chiefs and their biggest weakness? Believe it or not but I have Bowe, Baldwin and Battle on one of my fantasy teams, should I be starting them every week or should I be cautious with them? (My team is a bit banged up, I have A. Johnson and shitty P. Hillis)
Thanks
RE: Cassel
I honestly don’t.
In the history of the bloggesphere, no single topic has been so hotly debated as Matt Cassel on Arrowhead Pride. I see him for just that – A stop gap player who needs everything to go right to win consistantly. Especially with starting 0-3, AP was in full “Suck for Luck” mode and while I’m glad we turned it around, I can’t help but think how good we could be with our recieving corps, a healthy Jamaal Charles, Eric Berry and Tony Moeaki, and the QB from Stanford.
RE: Fantasy football.
I dunno, you tell me. They are all good players, how has your defense looked? I thought it was going to be a top-10 defense preseason, what the hell happened?

Our D
has talent but they’re missing the will to win and close games. We have been solid vs the run but real vulnerable through the air, so Bowe is a must start. I guess my question for you is do you see Baldwin consistently getting 6+ targets a game and 4+ receptions?
If I had Bowe, Baldwin and Battle?
I’d ride all 3 the next 3 games…Phins, Bronco’s and Pats all have “fantasy friendly” defenses.

seriously, he’s right about that, or it sure seems like it … we go round and round and round about the guy endlessly (either he’s “inconsistent” or he’s “just good enough to be average” or he’s “pretty damned good and, in fact, the best player on the team right now” and that varies from week to week and game to game)

Don't know about Cassel, so the safe bet would be Henne?
Henne seemed to be doing everything we wanted him to until his injury. The only problem he had this year was his comp %, but I could tell he was doing well on the field. Too bad our OL got him hit almost as much in 3 games as he did all of 2009.

One of my best friends
Is a Dolphins fan and I’ve always had a soft spot for this team since back when Dan Marino was tearing it up. Man I loved watching that guy play. I told him you guys deserve a good QB and coach after what you’ve been through.
As for Cassel taking this team to the Super Bowl, hmmm…after last year I would have said yes but after another season of up and down play I am not so confident. He has shown flashes and he has a very talented group around him. I am hoping Zorn can help him out with some of his mistakes. He’s got the tools around him and he’s getting better about using them, but I am not sure he has what it takes to get us a championship.
Our biggest strength I would say is our defense. Romeo has this young group of guys really starting to pull it together. After a very, very tough start to the season and losing our best player, we have started to overcome, having gone 7 straight quarters not allowing a score and 8 quarters not allowing a TD. Our weakness on defense is safety, with Berry out there just isn’t a guy who can fill his shoes. Also on defense other than Hail we have virtually no pass rush. He was shut down against the Raiders who double & triple teamed him the whole game.
I’m a homer so I would say always start the killer Bs in fantasy football but I don’t play so that would be better answered by someone else. I would imagine it comes down to match up, how is your secondary? I read somewhere that Cassel and Baldwin are both considered starters this week vs Miami, but I don’t know how much expert analysis is worth as these are the same guys that convinced people that Chris Johnson was the best fantasy pick this year.
I've always thought the Chiefs
have a great fanbase and an awesome homefield advantage, it’s tough to win in Arrowhead.
Our secondary is banged up and not playing up to their ability, so I guess Bowe and Baldwin are solid plays.
Wait...... you have friends? And did you misspell woman in your name tag? lol

Not this year
If we make the playoffs this year, Cassel may play a role, but it will be the defense that leads us there. I can’t imagine us getting to the Super Bowl this year, but it sure would be nice :).
As for the next few years, I still don’t see Cassel being the one to do it. He may be the QB when it happens, but I just don’t see him being able to take the entire team on his back. It will be much more due to the return of Charles, Berry and Moeaki than anything Cassel does.
For our biggest strength, I’d have to say the Defense in general. Other than McGraw, our defenders are all at least well above average. The best part is that most of our D is young and locked up for quite a while, so they should be good for years to come. Our biggest weakness would probably be our backfield (QB, RB). Cassel has been wildly inconsistent, stellar only occasionally, but not completely dreadful very often (except the first two games of this season). Without Charles, we have found a decent power runner in Battle, but there are still questions about the RB corps in general.
As for fantasy players: No way I would play them all at once. Bowe is probably the only one I would start every week, but Baldwin may soon work his way up, and Breaston could be good in a pinch at the flex or as a sub for a bye/injury.
oops
Just saw that you said Battle, not Breaston.
My main concern with Battle is that the coaching staff doesn’t seem to be able to commit to any of their runners. They still give Thomas Jones way too many carries, which eats into Battle’s potential. Since he doesn’t have the same speed as Charles, splitting the time is going to hurt his production to a point that I don’t think you can put him in there consistently unless you are really thin at RBs. I’d say you could probably count on Battle for about 70 yards a week, with a TD every other week on average.
Then again, Haley loves to make us look like fools when guessing what the gameplan will be, so you never know.
I think most would agree that he couldn't get us to a SB....but.....
If he can get this team to the playoffs with the injuries we’ve had, plus it taking 4 weeks to gel on offense, plus not having our first round WR who looks like a stud, plus with our schedule then we might have to review that opinion.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
craig, thanks for doing this post
so, do the Chiefs really have a chance this weekend?
also, I heard that Haley got a package of Gillette Razors from an unmarked address but the Post Office was traced back to North Miami … is there any truth to that rumor?
finally, do the Chiefs fans really believe even half the hype that they write about their team? seriously, I know the Chiefs have actually managed to win more than they’ve lost for like a whole year now, but wow … a lot of self back-patting going on at AP isn’t there?

any talk of locking him up long term? What do Dolphin phans think of him?
You guys can have him

Seriously though, he’s been ok. Just ok. He’s making franchise tag money and sometimes he just disappears. But the run defense has been decent, so theres that.
Do you want him though? Cuz I’ll trade him right now, damn the deadline.

Wait for the next 9 games to see if we will be drafting a QB.
I’m certainly not sold on Cassel, but if he leads us to a playoff spot and (gasp!) wins a game, there is no way we’ll be drafting a QB, especially with getting Stanzi last year. If we finish 6-10 and he plays like shit, I’m all for Dika’ing the draft and getting the Stanford kid from Indi.

Stanzi lasted until the 5th round for a reason.
If he turns out to be great, awesome, but I wouldn’t be willing to put much money on it.

It's all about development
Bringing in a rookie to learn the game, not just throwing him in and seeing if it works out or not. I think that will end up being a difference maker for Stanzi. Not saying he’ll be great, but 5th round doesn’t mean he won’t be. Let’s not forget there are great QBs who were not drafted early and some were not drafted at all.

I guess every team that needed one got their QB and there was no demand (see Ryan Mallet).

Well I will be the one to ask this
But as you know, we have signed, then cut, then signed, then cut LJ. Is his pressence missed at all in Arrowhead?
As for the QB situation, you guys have an awesome tandem of recievers, any thoughts of bringing in a speedster and duplicating the Patriots offense? The one thing I believe, is that the system was part of the solution to how your guy played.
Which corner do you see being able to hold BM to his usual self as of late. Do you giys have an answer for him?
Last week, we saw Reggie Bush run for only his second career 100 yard game, do you think that your defense has the speed to keep up with him if we choose to run him to the outside?
Last, what is your unbiased spread going into this game. Who wins, and by how much?
by dolphinfan4lyfe on Nov 2, 2011 6:41 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Flowers has been outstanding this season after a slow start and Carr has been playing well. If neither of those guys take on BM then you can plan on Romeo Crennel eliminating him from the play completely with a mean, physical double-team.
Last week, we saw Reggie Bush run for only his second career 100 yard game, do you think that your defense has the speed to keep up with him if we choose to run him to the outside?
Yes. Stopping the run will be our guys number one priority. Number two, get after the QB.
Last, what is your unbiased spread going into this game. Who wins, and by how much?
I believe the Chiefs offense without JC is starting to believe in themselves more and more. Breaston and Baldwin, along with Bowe, is our strength on offense—and we are starting to see our coaches and QB comfortable with throwing the deep ball. Our rushing attack is also top 10 in the league. If you allow us to run the ball effectively early, expect us to score points. I know our guys are a little beat up after the last couple of weeks, so I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and say Chiefs win 34-10.
I was once fired from a job two days after I waited on Matt Cassel and his wife Lauren Killian. Totally my AP moment to remember. Unfortunately also one of my stupidest moments.
by Chiefs_swagger on Nov 2, 2011 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Wowza! 24 points?
The only chance the Fins have is to get a big lead and blow us out or try to hold on. This team is built for close games and game after game the last 4 weeks we’ve had more gas in the tank in the second half then our opponents.

As for LJ....
If I owned an NFL team, I would sign him just so that I could turn around and cut him. Guy is a complete douche, and I’m glad he is gone from KC.
We tolerated him while he was running well, but once he lost that and kept his attitude, he was doomed here.
But as you know, we have signed, then cut, then signed, then cut LJ. Is his pressence missed at all in Arrowhead?
No. Not even a little.
As for the QB situation, you guys have an awesome tandem of recievers, any thoughts of bringing in a speedster and duplicating the Patriots offense?
I think we are barely opening up our pass game still, once Charles is back I see us becoming a run first team again. Haley has said he prefers to be a run team, but with our rookie Baldwin, Bowe & Breaston we look to have a heck of a passing threat.
Which corner do you see being able to hold BM to his usual self as of late. Do you giys have an answer for him?
Brandon Flowers, you may have heard of him, he’s in a band called the killers.
Last week, we saw Reggie Bush run for only his second career 100 yard game, do you think that your defense has the speed to keep up with him if we choose to run him to the outside?
I can see us using Derrick Johnson to keep Bush in check, he’s playing exceptionally well right now. I also think that the Dolphins are not using Bush well (similar to what the Chiefs are doing with McCluster), I think these guys need to get the ball tossed on the outside to them instead of handoffs up the middle.
Last, what is your unbiased spread going into this game. Who wins, and by how much?
I hate making predictions on score because you never know. I don’t think this is an easy win and hope this doesn’t turn into a trap game for us, if I had to pick a score, I’d say 24-17 Chiefs.
agree with the "trap game" sentiment
intelligent and unbiased Chiefs fans know this is NOT going to be a “cakewalk” by any means, and the Chiefs could very well drop this one … coming off an emotional MNF win a week ago and heading into Division Rivals Denver next week, trap game is very well what this one could be
the Dolpphins, as Haley has said, are not what their record says … they have a tough team and I personally see a tough, hard fought, close and fairly low scoring game

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
First, what do you think the difference was between the first 3 games and the next 4?
and second, you should really not take our team very lightly (or at least for the first 3 quarters). One game we will end up surprising a team with an upset victory.
I have no idea.
It’s easy to say injuries, because it’s easier to gameplan KNOWING we are missing Jamaal and Berry for an entire week than on the fly when they go down in game….toss in a little luck and some better playcalling and poof: better results.

by craig in calgary on Nov 3, 2011 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions
Agree with injuries
It just seemed like there was no way we could win after Berry went down and the next week the same for Charles. I think the team was just mentally beaten after that. Romeo has since gotten our defense back on track and playing well even without Berry out there. It was just a matter of changing our game plan. As for offense, we really had no run game until Jackie Battle showed up in Indy. We still seem to struggle some with running but the flip side of that is Matt Cassel is developing some good chemistry with his WRs.
I don’t think this game is a walk or easy and I am really nervous of the outcome because Mia has a lot of talent and have not been playing poorly, just unable to finish. Add in the Chiefs who are running well but still making too many mistakes and this game could be that trap game for the Chiefs, but gosh I hope not.
Allright, one more
Who is your biggest concern on our team coming into this game. Like, who do you most fear playing against. For all the losing were doing, we do have some talent on both sides of the ball. So again, which matchup do you fear most and why?
by dolphinfan4lyfe on Nov 2, 2011 6:43 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Cameron Wake vs Barry Richardson.
Cassel might have more grass in his helmet than…..ummm…..it’s too late for me to come up with a clever analogy but stay tuned, tomorrow I’m gonna come up with something briliant.

Offensively I worry about Matt Moore taking off like he did against the Giants, the Chiefs have no pass rush outside of Hali and if you saw the game Monday you will notice that Rivers was able to step away from pressure and convert some big 3rd & longs.
