I know that many have been pretty critical of Reggie Bush and what he brings to the table, but I think that we have something great in the making. Let's take a look at Reggie Bush this year and what the team is accomplishing. We need to remember when looking at Reggie and his numbers that he wasn't on the team right away, he had to sit and watch for a couple of weeks before he could get in pads with the team. In my opinion this hurt his chemistry with the O-line, and didn't give the coaching staff an opportunity to know exactly how to use Reggie and his speed in the offense.
Reggie wanted to be an every down back. He was very vocal in expressing his desire to accomplish that feat, but it isn't a realistic way to use a running back built like him. After only two preseason games Reggie came out as the feature back in the first game. The results were not good. In the first 4 games of the season Reggie had 40 carries for 119 yards, that is a 2.97 average. In the last four games Reggie has carried the ball 48 times for 308 yards, that is a 6.41 average which is phenomenal. Right now Reggie is in the top 10 for Yards Avg per carry for running backs, and that is with the horrible start that he had to the season. I have always said that the Dolphins need to go the tape of how the Chiefs use Jamaal Charles and it seems as if they have. Let’s look at some highlights of Jamaal Charles from last year when he was averaging 6.4 yards per carry.

A lot of the carries that Jamaal get are off tackle to the edge on a straight line. The few that are up the middle are normally misdirection plays where they take the line moving to the right, and he cuts behind the line up the middle. Now let’s look at some of the highlights from Reggie the past couple of games. (Sorry there are no Reggie only Highlights)

They are the same type of running plays as Charles gets, misdirection, off tackle, and end arounds. This is the way that you need to use a running back like Reggie Bush and Jamaal Charles. We need to remember that this type of back is never going to be Tomlinson getting you 20 plus touchdowns on the season, but being in the top 5 on yards per carry and impacting the game is exactly what a back like Reggie Bush can bring.
