Sparano is bad but Ireland is worse

I would like to start off by saying I liked Sparano but there comes a point where you can’t keep making excuses for someone and it’s put up or shut up.  His time here is done and right now he’s the walking dead.  But is he to blame for the Dolphins being 0-7.

My feeling is that this blame lies with Ireland.  Because at the end of the day Sparano can only coach the players he has on the roster and we all know Ireland is the man in charge of that.  Think about all the crappy moves we’ve made over the last 4 years and tell me the team is better because of them.

·         Matt Ryan passed over

·         Signed Wilford to a four-year, $13 million contract with $6 million guaranteed.

·         Traded defensive end Jason Taylor

·         Drafted Merling in 2nd

·         Drafted Chad Henne (3rd pick for dolphins as if QB was not that important)

·         Pat White 2nd round pick

·         Pat Turner 3rd round pick

·         Matt Roth Who knows what happened there

·         Signed safety Gibril Wilson (Raiders).

·         Signed cornerback Eric Green (Cardinals).

·         Traded center Samson Satele

·         Traded wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. (got almost nothing for a good role player)

·         Drafted Jared Odrick with 1st round pick… once again passing over areas of need.

·         Drafted John Jerry 3rd round

·         Drafted Mike Pouncey instead of addressing QB position

·         Signed linebacker Kevin Burnett as a replacement for Crowder.  (how did that work out)

·         Signed quarterback Matt Moore (the only guy out there that’s not better than Henne)

·         Signed offensive tackle Marc Colombo (What were they thinking)

·         Cut Will Allen

·         Terminated the contract of corner back Benny Sapp  (with full pay for season)

·         Resigned Will Allen after Sapp mistake

·         Signed Bush as an every down back and almost never see him catch the ball.

I think some of those were Parcells.

Like the Pat White and Matt Roth deals.

you right

I wonder if Sparano will get another chance at coaching?

He probably will (obviously not here)

I doubt he’ll be a head coach next year though

I am not so sure.

Some of the players like him and I think he is a likable guy but I have seen nothing in the last 4 years that says he is a good coach.

Yeah, the players like him, but they don't respect him.

You can tell from the way the phone it in on the field.

ITs kind of hard, because its really both of them

But I think Ireland is more to blame which is why I chose him, but even saying that we shouldn’t be 0-7 right now. Some of these games it very clear coaching is very much an issue too. But the passing and trying to go cheap on the QB position will always be team crippling failure on Ireland’s part.

by LordBishop34 on Nov 1, 2011 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it's a toss up as to who is more to blame.

Really the fault falls on Parcells for bringing these two cronies into Miami.

Blame trickles down the whole team

I agree with what most of you are saying, you cant pin the blame on one person. Everyone in this organization has contributed to what can only be coined as a pure clusterphin. That includes the coaching staff behind Tony Sparano. Say what you will, but these guys deserve an atomic name-drop. Im looking at you Mr. Bush. Of course I don’t mean Reggie (he stinks right?). I mean Mr. Steve Bush, the wide receivers coach (or is he in charge of offensive quality control… No. That was the last three sparkling seasons… Who owns that dubious title now… Some hyper-qualified character, I’m sure).

side note/rant:I swear the corners must be in on the WR drills in practice. I haven’t see this many drops from a team’s offense and defense since way back in 2010. I still can’t believe no one has made a youtube montage of all the dropped interceptions from a season ago…

Getting back on topic, and in the spirit of name-dropping, here are some more folks that have helped prepare the soupe à la anguish that the fans have had to guzzle for countless weeks:
Bryan Cox. Jeff Nixon. Darren Krein. Brian-definitely-Dabbol.
The two gentlemen whose name-tags read offensive or defensive quality control.
Darren Rizzi gets a temporary pass.
Our coaching staff has so many people doing something for the first time (like Ike) its no wonder so many aspects of the team seem a notch or two (or 31) behind. But then you could put some blame on the lockout, which would be debatable.

Really though, the whole team should be thrown under the bus, and done wheelies upon. They are all accountable. Before the season started, Sparano addressed the media stating “we’re gonna get there with you or without you.” They got there alright. and they did it as a team.

by runrunpasspunt on Nov 4, 2011 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Very true. Sparano did not put together a good coaching staff.

Sparano would be about as willing as Parcells to admit he put together a poor staff.

Stephen Ross should be in the mix here,

but then again it wasn’t his decision to hire either in the first place. Hopefully, he will pick a better regime next season. I’ll give him a little credit for going after Harbaugh hard. Turned out pretty well for the 49ers. Then I remember how he got rid of our 1 o’clock summer games and he loses his credibility :P

Ireland is a guy who is using outdated scouting.

Size over speed, character over skill, and run first, pass second was yesterday’s way to win.

Today is speed speed speed, skill skill skill, and pass first run second.

It is like he is a leftover dinosaur from the Henningzoic ice age period…EXTINCT!

Our team now looks like a fossil worthy of being left in the ground for a few more million years.

at the end of the day

Sporano makes all the decisions you know that right? Ireland just gets him what he needs/wants. Colombo was on Sporano I’d say, passing over Ryan was Parcells. Parcells had beef with Taylor so he got traded, same thins with Satele that was a PArcells move as he likes big linemen and Satele didn’t fit the mold. Once again David Lee and Henning wanted White and coerced Parcells into making Ireland pick him…..Wilson,, Moore, and Green. Oh I almost forgot Wilford are what I would really blame Ireland for. Roth had problems with Sporano, he didn;t sign bush to be an every down back, he signed bush he said for his peed and versitility. Jerry and Turner were the biggest F ups along with wilford…….

I don't know why people are so hung up on Ryan.

He’s good, but not great. I don’t see him ever being elite, do you? Since when are we satisfied with “good” QB play? It was refreshing with Pennington, but nobody thought of him as the long-term answer. We still, deep down in our hearts, all want the same thing: An elite QB.

Amazing, isn't it?

You’re exactly right, Joel. 2008 wasn’t exactly the “year of the quarterback.” Jake Long will probably go to the Hall of Fame one day, Ryan probably won’t, and yet I see people carping over why the Dolphins didn’t pick him. Meanwhile, I think you can make the argument that Henne is on par with the only other quarterback of significance drafted that year, Joe Flacco.

by Dolfan Lee on Nov 4, 2011 7:38 AM EDT up reply actions

I imagine that

if you break down every team in the NFL, you could have a similar list of poor decisions throughout the last couple of years. I am not saying that Ireland / Sparano / Parcels aren’t awful and destroyed our team, but at the time, many of those decisions seemed good. Hindsight is always 20/20. Regardless of who is to blame, they all need to go so that we can change the mentality and atmosphere of this team.

I don't know

I was questioning lots of those moves and I know others around here were too.

The only FA/trades moves I liked were Marshall and Dansby. The rest of the moves seemed to be going for bargain players hoping they break out. Well not one of them did except for Fasano and he is only average.

As for drafting I don’t know squat but I know they never went hard for any of the quarterbacks. I remember when they drafted Patric Turner and the analysts were scratching their heads saying he was a 6th round pick. I thought to myself what do they know…. Well they knew more than Ireland. Using a 2nd round pick on a wilcat QB that was smaller than my 5 year old girl another head scratcher. Drafting Pouncey instead of going after a QB when we all knew Henne was a bust.

by sdelinois on Nov 1, 2011 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

i dont think Henne was or is a bust

but i dont disagree with you about much else. I think when Henne leaves us, he will have a good career still.

Depends on where he goes...

But he’s talented enough to succeed in this league, just not as part of a totally inept franchise.

Your poll is missing another choice

I’ll take Choice D – both Ireland and Sparano.

Sparano is a nice guy

Have you ever seen a player standing next to Sparano after a bad play ( sent to the principals office ) ? I’ve seen coaches rip players for not making a play … or sit them down for not making plays. I don’t see Sparano holding anybody accountable for their poor play. Sparano has the players back. The players might love Sparano. But … can we get a coach who’s not the players best friend … and demands respect ?

1. Andrew Luck 2. Landry Jones 3.

Sparano is done as Dolphins coach

Sparano should be able to muster 8-8 season out of this tallent even with Irelands bad moves.

by sdelinois on Nov 1, 2011 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I voted Sparano also.

He is not a motivator, he game plans poorly, his OL expertise is lacking, game management is terrible and we are 0 for in home games. Ireland isn’t too far behind but I can remember at least 20 of the last 25 losses were winnable games(poor coaching). Satele, Roth, Taylor and Ginn were major subtractions, but letting Mallet slide to the Pats hurts deeply.

I vote E

After adding Parcells’ name to the mix, and say it is all of the above.

The biggest problem is that no matter what team you look at in his history, Parcells tends to escape early, thus losing the factor of accountability.

Sometimes it is hard to see how his decisions have effected this franchise.

However, I do have to give props to Ireland for this past draft. Pouncey, Thomas, Clay, Wilson, all look to be bright spots in a dismal year.

However the only fault I see is one specific offseason move. Our OT Paper bag pickup.

I dont fault him for the pickup of Burnett. On some occasions, he actually looks to be outplaying Dansby.

Coaching is having an effect, simply because of his attitude, sure, dont throw the players under the bus, but you have to have some sort of accountability.

That leads me to the players. Looking at this squad, we have several players that are pulling the sled, but no Alpha Dog to lead. For all the multi million dollar contracts, someone needs to step up to the plate.

No leadership has this team looking lost. So much so, that there are.better comments and leadership traits coming from a guy now hosting his own radio show " CC", than from our own million dollar men.

A coach should be the leader in the locker room and sidelines. We lack that, but there should also be a player on each side of the ball that can guide this team from out of the fog. We lack this as well. For all the collegiate leaders we have drafted over the past 3 seasons, not a single one has stepped up.

Even if we dont draft Luck this season, we need a player that can get in a players face, and hold him accountable, no matter the position, we need a leader. Sure that usually falls on the QB, but I have seen this from other positions as well.

On defense, we need the same quality. It is the mark of great teams. For Pittsburgh, you would think it was Rothlisberger, but no, it is Hines Ward that gets in peoples grill with a swagger that wont quit. On defense, you could make a case for any number of candidates.

Baltimore, New York Giants, heck, even Washington all have this. This is what we lack.

I love Sparano, but it has to be on him.

If Bellichick were coaching the same players, it would be a very different story. Much as it pains me.

by sirdolphin on Nov 1, 2011 5:50 PM EDT reply actions

actually, if Bellicheat were coaching this team,

The roster would still look different.

1. We wouldn’t have Dansby, Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, Chris Clemmons, or Soliai on Defense. They would be replaced with Maluaga, a couple veteran Corners, Atogwe, and perhaps Green Bays defensive Tackle.

On offense, we would have seen Henne possibly, but we would also probably had ourselves a young TE, and possibly a few pieces of the oline would be different

Philosophy changes the players on the field. So you cant say what he would do if he was coaching this team, because there would be some changes.
