Packers vs. Dolphins (Draft)

Packers:

2010- 7 out of 7 (Bryan Bulaga #23, Mike Neal #56, Morgan Burnett #71, Andrew Quarless #154, Marshall Newhouse #169, James Starks #193, C.J. Wilson #230)

2009- 5 out of 8 (B.J. Raji #9, Clay Matthews #26, T.J. Lang #109, Jarius Wynn #182, Brad Jones #218)

2008- 5 out of 9 (Jordy Nelson #36, Pat Lee #60, Jermichael Finley #91, Josh Sitton #135, Matt Flynn #209)

2007- 3 out of 11 (James Jones #78, Desmond Bishop #192, Mason Crosby #193)

2006- 2 out of 12 (A.J. Hawk #5, Greg Jennings #52)

2005- 2 out of 11 (Aaron Rodgers #24, Nick Collins #51)

2004- 1 out of 6 (Scott Wells #251)

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

The Packers also selected Aaron Kampman #156 who had 54 sacks and 12 FF

This is how the Packers rose to fame drafting one pro-bowler after another while 25 of their 64 draft picks since 2004 (excluding this season) are still on the team. With the exception of Charles Woodson and Tramon Williams (who I believed signed as an undrafted FA) all the pro-bowlers on the team have been drafted. Also their success of drafting #1 round players has been awesome. Raji, Matthews, and Rodgers are all pro-bowl players. Hawk has been an above average LB. They did not have a 1st round pick in 2008. In 2007 they drafted DT Justin Harrell #16 who was a bust with only 28 tackles in his career. In 2004 they drafted CB Ahmad Carroll #25. He played 3 seasons for the Packers with 104 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 3 sacks. In 2000 the Packers selected T Chad Clifton #44 who is still on the team today. Also in 1999 the Packers selected Donald Driver #213 who is also still on the team. Their 1st round pick in 2000 was Bubba Franks who had 262 receptions, 2,300 yards and 32 TD in his career with the Packers. Their 1st round pick in 2001was Jamal Reynolds who had 18 tackles, 3 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles in his career with the Packers. Their 1st Round Pick in 2002 was Javon Walker who had 157 receptions, 2,444 yards and 22 TD in his career with the Packers.

Dolphins:

2010- 6 out of 8 (Jared Odrick #28, Koa Misi #40, John Jerry #73, Nolan Carroll #145, Reshad Jones #163, Austin Spitler #252)

2009- 4 out of 9 (Vontae Davis #25, Sean Smith #61, Brian Hartline #108, Chris Clemons #165)

2008- 5 out of 9 (Jake Long #1, Phillip Merling #32, Chad Henne #57, Kendall Langford #66, Lex Hilliard #204)

2007- 2 out of 10 (Paul Solai #108, Brandon Fields #225)

2006- 0 out of 6

2005- 0 out of 6

2004- 1 out of 6 (Vernon Carey #19)

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

See the difference? I certainly see one. Since 2004 (excluding this year) only 17 of out our 54 draft picks are still on the team, with around a possible 5 that will not return. We still don’t know how we did this past year but it looks good so far. Pouncey and Thomas are keepers, Gates will take sometime to develop but he will be good, Clay has been injured, and Wilson we are still unsure about, and Frank Kearse is on the Panthers. While our last 4 #1 draft picks have been good we busted our 1st round picks from 2005-2007, which is 3 1st round picks. In those years the Packers selected Rodgers, Hawk, but did not have a 1st round pick in ’08. Vontae Davis is very good but I would take Clay Matthews over him who was selected with the next pick. The Dolphins did not have a 1st round pick in ’00, ’02, and ’03. In 2001 they selected Jamar Fletcher who only had 55 tackles and 2 interceptions in 3 years with the team. Their good mid-round picks that had some good years with the Dolphins were Chris Chambers #52 in ’02, and Randy McMichael #114 in ’03. Yeremiah Bell was selected #213 in 2003. That’s the difference between a championship team vs. well the Dolphins.

Wow

so you’re saying the packers are good and the dolphins are bad? Great analysis! :) j/k

by phinhead on Oct 3, 2011 9:57 PM EDT reply actions

There is a flaw in the analysis.....

Since 2006, the Packers have had 1 coach.

Miami has had 3.

Every time a coaching change is made, players from one coaching staff are scrapped for new ones coming in. That’s why there are 0 from 05-06. Everyone has gotten rid of teh Saban draft picks. 2007 was the one Cam Cameron year, and Sparano has cleaned them out as much as possible too.

And, if a new coach is brought in this year, you can expect to see the same thing happen.

I think your response is more than a bit disingenuous Mosul

Regardless of the new coaching staff coming in, we wouldn’t be showing guys like Greg Jennings, Aaron Rodgers, Jordy Nelson or Jermichael Finley the door had they been drafted by us. Whether they would have been as productive with our subpar coaching staff is another story.

Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB

I agree with Mosul

As I made that point in this post. http://www.thephinsider.com/2011/4/13/2109745/why-not-finish-the-exodus-and-get-younger-in-the-process Not only did we have 3 different Head coaches we also he 3 different GM’s. While the Packers has had Ted Thomson since 05.

This regime has done pretty well

Jake Long an All-Pro tackle, Vonte Davis a solid starter(if not futher probowler), Ordick looks solid this year( he missed his entire rookie season). He could be a future probowler if not he’ll be a solid starter.

if anything you are making a point that our current regime is solid

all those fail drafts were the previous regime
also i agree with Mosul, while obvious stars would not be let go (Jake Long) other players that still need a bit more time to develop may be given the boot early (aka Henne, Gates, Clay, Hilliard, Wilson, etc)
and you never know some of these players that they let go easily may end up becoming studs (*ahem*WES WELKER ahem)

Yeah

This is a perfect example of the player personnel decisions the FO has made. Even in our most “productive” draft year:

2010- 6 out of 8 (Jared Odrick #28, Koa Misi #40, John Jerry #73, Nolan Carroll #145, Reshad Jones #163, Austin Spitler #252)

It is unclear whether any of these guys will even become an average NFL player. Right now Jerry, Carroll and Reshad Jones barely deserve to be on an NFL roster. Same type of deal in 2008:

2008- 5 out of 9 (Jake Long #1, Phillip Merling #32, Chad Henne #57, Kendall Langford #66, Lex Hilliard #204)

The FO can hardly deserve credit for Jake Long, being that they had the #1 overall pick. Only Langford has been an average player besides Long.

So yeah, the Packers have just annihilated us in the draft the past few years. The team’s respective records are a precise reflection of this.

The definition of Insanity is:

Doing the same thing multiple times and expecting a different outcome:
The Dolphins drafts have been nothing short of Anemic!
Also in response to Mosuls comments:

Let’s look at how many of the Dolphins draft players are still in the NFL and doing anything. You are not going to be adding many to that list!!

Carefull...

I have said the same thing year-after year- that MY DRAFT picks (when the Fins were on the clock) are always better than our actual team picks. (OK 75% of the time)
Where are all the “bashers” now ?? Where are all the TUNA supporters – Tony supporters ?? yea – I said many times that TUNA was building a SLOW size—based TEAM… without speed of any kind…. and that’s what is wrong with this team now….no PLAYMAKERS… We finally got a little speed after he left in Gates and Bush… But Tony can’t use them correctly. Funny – those of us who pointed out these failures a long time ago were abused – but now they are all gone…but I am the negative one…still here supporting this team….every week. Where are the people who thought a CB (Davis) was better value than a pass rush OLB (Mathews) ..
and for the record JAKE is not now or EVER worth what Matty Ice has been to his team !!! I think 0-4 (7 game losing streak) 1-11 at home shows how little a tackle helps you over a franchise QB.
I want to blow up this whole mess now…
I would put EVERYONE on the trading block – in order to move up and get ANDREW LUCK (Landry Jones nice 2nd choice)…
We need to offer WAKE, LONG, or MARSHALL – for the right value – in order to get another 1st round pick b/c we will need at least two, 1st round picks to have any shot at moving up….NOTHING IS WORTH MORE THAN A FRANCHISE QB.
I would try to keep LONG (Marshall …drops Wake (age) not so much.
check the standings if you disagree…… Sure Henne is “better” this year… but not good enough……let the bashing begin…

Who says we need to move up in the draft?

The way this team is playing we might get the number one overall.

Marino is a living legend.
Driver of the draft almost all offensive players bandwagon.

Wake is defintely not the same he was last year

I like him cuz he works extremely hard but he is turning 30 and NO WAY would he have missed that sack on Rivers last year the whole team is just a bunch of zombies

How to build a team...

Most value to a team:
QB, WR, RB, OLB, DE, LT, CB
this is an offensive pass-driven league… QB & stud WR (Fitz, Megatron) are the most important… then a great RB… not some slow douched running a 4.63 (DT) how about chris johnson people ? He would be worth way more than any OL or DL…
then you turn to SPEED OFF THE EDGE OLB and DE….before going back to offense.
Speed off the edge on offense and defense – strength up the middle…

Daniel Thomas

He might be a little slow but u have to give him tons of credit for getting 200 rushing yards when we have Marc Colombo on the line.

sad but true

why would we need to move up ? who is playing worse than miami ? its sad but we will be picking 1st

by Robert Wise on Oct 4, 2011 1:09 PM EDT reply actions

We are in a very intense battle with the Seahwaks for #1

We will get the #1 pick though cuz our schedule is harder

If the Colts get the worst pick and take Luck, I will be pissed...

that would be 20+ years of great QB play. It would be like that year Robinson was injured and the Spurs sucked, they got the 1st pick and took Duncan…
