REMEMBER 2008s DRAFT?
I need you guys to go back and fill in the gaps of what I remember. There's so much I wish to say and I hope I could put it all down in a proper fashion. I recall Miami signing Long BEFORE the draft - or at least getting him to confirm a contract. They tried to do this with Matt Ryan and I believe that's why they didn't chose Ryan. So correct me and/or fill in the gap.
Next point, let's say that Miami does get the No. 1 pick next year. They will only pick Luck if they feel they could sign him. Of course, if the kid refuses their contract offer BEFORE draft day, they may 1) pick him for the best offer or 2) trade down for the best offer. Do you guys understand what I'm trying to say?
Just because we have the first pick is not a lock on having Luck for our QB. He could very well do what Elway did. I believe that's why we signed Jake Long - only because we could get him under contract.
I hope we land in the top 5 with picks. If we don't get Luck, we could get Jones or Baylor's QB. But one of those three WILL BE ours next Spring.

Here is a correction
If Miami drafts Luck, his contract is locked. There are no more negotiations that need to be done now. That point is moot now.
I don’t think Luck would refuse to play for Miami, but in any event that he even threatened not to, I’d still select him. I’d draft him, try to convince him to play and, if not, I would trade him for a ransom, preferrably to the team that drafted Landry Jones. If not for Jones, I’d make the trade with some team with a promising young QB.

Mostly before the season starts & this is with the first pick, & the first pick only. There is a nagociation that takes place!
Were the owner of the team, the said player, & coach, can all talk before the draft even starts. that way we can get a feel, or a read on our guy, but if we win this week there wont be a compleat discenagration

Could always go the Jim Kelly route
Draft him. If he doesn’t want to play for the Dolphins then hold onto his rights until he does want to play for the Dolphins.

With the new CBA in place, signing a #1 pick shouldn't be any kind of problem.
NY Jets = NFL's Chicago Cubs
There's a fine line between hopeful and desperate. Just look @ Jets fans.
With regards to 2008
I believe Parcells & Ireland reached an agreement with Long the day before the draft. However, I don’t think it was so much an issue of Ryan’s reluctance to sign as it was the fact that Parcells likes to build teams with big linemen. I may be wrong here, but I think Parcells was targeting Long the whole time, and was intent on drafting him unless he could swing a really advantageous trade for the pick.
Yeah I really think Parcells wanted to trade down to a certain pick knowing Long will still be
there but I truly think Ross wanted Long and Henne all along(Michigan Players), therefore BP had no choice. IMO, Parcells was only trying to sneak his personal pick in with an extra pick via a trade.

Ross bought 50% of the dolphins on Feb 2008 with an agreement to buy another 45%
for a cool billion in 2009 in which time he chose to keep BP in Miami.

yeah
But he didn’t become managing partner until later and he completed his purchase of Dolphins in Jan 2009 he had no say in that first draft.

If we pick him , he is ours with the new rules, but he can refuse to play, pretty much what everybody said ahead of me!!

We all know Luck can pull an Elway or Manning,
people bring it up every day. The contract shouldnt be a problem because we should simply give him the most we are allowed under the CBA…

There is a rookie signing cap now too I believe.
So it’s not like he will be getting more money from other teams.
I feel confident that we will draft a QB next spring
If it’s not Luck, it will be OAK or Baylor QB. We will draft within the first five picks. I feel we will have a change in the FO (coach AND GM). Off Coord will be gone. Nolan will stay. Special Teams will go. We will start all over again and it will be the “rebuilding process” A-G-A-I-N so let’s get used to it now. We’re in for a long three / four years.
The Dolphins still may not pick a QB in the first round . . .
It is never ever ever a lock for a team to pick a certain player or position in the first round or any round for that matter.
I hope the Dophins do get Andrew Luck but I won’t get my hopes up. Last year it was Ryan Mallet and in the 08 draft it was Matt Ryan.
