Trading down

Has anybody ever thought of the chance that if Andrew luck did come out to the draft and we had the 1st overall pick of   trading down.Just think of the idea we can get so much value cause some teams are going to be going crazy to land Andrew Luck maybe like  seattle.

We can possibly pick up an extra 2nd and 3rd round pick at the least but I'm sure we can get a lot more.We can draft a big name tackle like the guy out of usc  to replace Colombo on the right side and in the 2nd round go out and get a big name tightend like the one out of Clemson and also a guard. Not only well we have the best offensive line in the NFL to protect chad Henne he well have so many weapons to work with so with that we should have no problems putting points on the board.I still have faith in Chad in the few games he played i seen him mature so much and he became a way better football player and not just that a leader as well some players just need more time then others. In week 1 he was going head to head with tom but it just got over shadowed cause we lost and tom broke a record. With the right peaces around chad and in the right system i fell the guy right now can be a top 10 QB in the NFL and with time a top 5,But dumping him right now is just going to bite the dolphins in the ass in the future.

So what? If the dolphins have the #1 pick and they don't pick Luck...

then they can pretty much go pound sand as far as I’m concerned. Their history of drafting has been sketchy at best and if you have a chance to land an amazing QB prospect (i’ve heard all the comparisions and i’ve watched this kid) then they need to pull the trigger. If they don’t then there is something really wrong with this team. The other QB’s aren’t in the same class as Luck and if you get the chance to grab him you do it.

Dude...

its A PASSING LEAGUE NOW… for the last time… NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN A FRANCHISE QB… have the last 4 years taught you nothing ?
“right pieces” around Henne ? This is not possible, he is just not capable….we need a star QB – someone who can WIN games in the 4th qtr… Like Brady, Manning Brees, rogers, etc… ANDREW LUCK is that guy…Lets build around him … throw out this HORRIBLE COACHING STAFF and start over…

No way

This team has been in a tailspin with the QB position with only a few brights spots at the position since Marino left, the last bright spot being CP10. We can’t pass on Luck, we would never live that down. It was a mistake to pass on Ryan, and Luck from all indications is far superior to Ryan. About as close to a sure thing you can get in the draft. We need a QB, more than any other position on this team. If you have the opportunity to take the best QB, you do it.

But what if the next group falls in love with another one of the big names? You have guys like Griffin rocketing up the

mock boards. I think if someone offers just some insane package like 3 #1’s and other picks then you have to at least listen to the offer. Also it matters where they are trading out of. Do they also have a top 3 pick? If they are way down in the first then you are for sure screwing yourself no matter how much you like the other QB’s in the draft.

This has been a conservative FO

and we are experiencing the result. Have some balls. Take a freaking gamble. Draft Luck and screw three #1s in a trade down. If the football intelligentsia has Luck as the best QB to come out in decades and we pass on him, we are monumentally boneheaded.

it would be exactly the bone head move I expect from the dolphins

we passed on breeze we past on rogers,, we passed on mallett, we passed on ponder, we passed on mccoy. we only take has been or never were qbs. which is why we stick with henne and moore, and rosenfels. it is what has kept us in the cellar for 14 years. this is what has us at 0 n 5. if we pass on luck we could be the laughing stock of the league for the next 14 years. which is why I think this front office would pass on him.

by JImbo111 on Oct 19, 2011 10:12 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

We didn't pass on Ponder. He was drafted ahead of us.

I think we could have moved up for Ponder, but we didn't pass on him

But given where Mallett ended up that was a ball dropper there a guy that dropped not because of talent which was first round but for other issues, the fact he ended up in NE just made it worse.

by LordBishop34 on Oct 20, 2011 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Mallett didn't only drop from character issues

Not all the teams get overworked by the Scouting Combine like many fans do. Even before the Combine I said Mallett would be the 2011 workout warrior because he has a hell of an arm when he has time in the pocket. His struggles start to show when he’s pressured.

So Pouncey is the reason

for our Defenses utter collapse? give me a break. If the Defense had been performing like they did last year you would not be able to say that. Has the Offense been spectacular? no but the Defense has been horrid. Based on the outlook of this team during the draft there is not a single person that we could have drafted there that would have made any more impact than Pouncey who has been playing great.

by AcolyteofRa on Oct 19, 2011 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

not sure I agree with that

But Pouncey has been good, still taken too high, and while it was a need for this team it was not a major need on the line or the primary need for the overall team, which was QB.

by LordBishop34 on Oct 20, 2011 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

exactly right

we needed a qb and we took a center. marino never had a defense, and what we have today is far better than he ever had. if we had a qb and were scoring points we be winning. so it’s not that pouncey screwed our defense, it’s that we never fixed our offence. No qb no win,, it’s that simple as that.

you can’t take all the offenses line man in the world first choice, and still lose if you don’t have a quarterback.

Did you see what Oakland did to get a QB

Trade 2 first round picks for Carson Palmer. CP is older, and Andrew Luck is a lot better. I guess if a team is willing to trade 5 yrs of first and second round picks , and maybe the top 2 players on theri team,I would consider it. Otherwise a frontal Lobotomy would be indicated.

read what the guy said....

IF Luck does NOT declare eligibility for the draft. He is a junior. He doesnt HAVE to declare.

The only problem i see with this post,is that if we did in fact draft Kalil,he would be our LT,and Long would then be moved to RT. In all honesty,it would set the bookends that even Sparano couldnt mess up.

In all fairness, this would make the most sense,if we in fact did not have an Andrew Luck on the board. Imagine Thomas running behind a line that looked like this:

Kalil IGH Pouncey Incognito Long

IGH= insert Guard Here

by dolphinfan4lyfe on Oct 19, 2011 11:22 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Ahh, thanks for pointing that out...

Luck has no reason not to declare next year… Unless he has a hard-on for a national championship or something weird like that.

-Bill.

by Bill Moody on Oct 19, 2011 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

HE would be pushing it

It would be a risk not to come out, he was close to declaring last year, he will this year. Even if he doesn’t there are a couple other QBs that may not be as a sure a thing as Luck but are certainly guys you can build around. Luck should be our pick, but coming away with one of the top QBs next year is the bare minimum we should be shooting for next year.

by LordBishop34 on Oct 19, 2011 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Luck is a senior actually

But he is able to go back as a 5th year senior. It’s a similar way Leinart went back, but I wouldn’t expect Luck to go back. He will already have his degree by next year.

Take a look at Matt Moore.........

……and what you see is the future Chad Henne. A once promising starter turned journeyman backup.

There is no way Henne wears a Dolphin uniform again. Even if you believe in him (which I don’t) he has become impossible to re-sign.

His contract runs out after this year. What do you pay him? Starter money? Obviously not. He just added an injury to his already spotty (at best) career. So then do you ask him to take a crappy short-term back-up type contract and come back to the team with his tail between his legs and expect him to start for you? No.

Its no coincidence that the team looks eerily the same with Moore at qb. They are at the same talent level. They are good enough to have a job in the NFL, but that’s about it.

Henne didn’t look that great, better then Moore perhaps ALOT better then Moore..no.

by LordBishop34 on Oct 20, 2011 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions

I say we keep Henne.

Before I go any farther, I absolutely take Luck if we’re in the position to. With that said, what would Henne’s value be on the open market? Not much! I believe Henne is a lot better than he’s been able to show but that is irrelevant. Think about it. We take Luck/Jones/Whoever, sign Henne to a 2 year incentive based contract and let them battle it out. At worst, we have a capable backup with starting experience that isn’t a 40 year old has been.

I think closetphinphan is right

I think he moves on regardless of what the team may wish. Also I don’t think the argument he is alot better then he has been able to show line works anymore. 4 years two different coordinators and many games being aloud to suck more then most teams would allow, He is what he is, some promise just didn’t turn out, a little better this year but still not very good, back up quality QB.

That is far from true

Luck is a senior and is eligible for next season, but he claimed his reason for going back this year was to finish his degree. It’ll be done next year.

On top of that, his RB is a junior and could declare. His starting WRS, TE, and 4 of 5 OL are all seniors too. Would it be possible that he’d want to stay for a National Championship? It is possible, but I also don’t think he’d be thrilled about going back when 8 of 11 or 9 of 11 of his offensive teammates will no longer be on the team.

You have a clear point

But at the same time there is a different way to look at it,There is only about 3 Qbs in this league you can throw on any team and make them a playoff team. But for the rest of the guys in the NFL what determines how good they do is in the front office the system that there in and the guys they play with. Most teams make the qb’s look better then what they realy are but very few make the team look better like the colts and the patriots.

I already did a fan post on this and the reaction was pretty clear.

Check it out here.
The attached poll question was should we trade back and stockpile up to 6 picks in the top 100 of this stacked draft class (Other picks in the next draft would also be likely) and the options were:
A.) Draft Luck For God’s Sake! WE need a first round QB! Griese! Marino! GEEZ! Trade Henne for a 3rd or 4th rounder
B.) Trade back and pick up 6 frist 3 round talent including 4 to 5 in the first 75 picks.
C.) Keep Henne, Draft Luck, Groom Luck for 1 year and draft to fill the other holes with our other picks.
Options A and C (Draft Luck) got roughly 75% of the vote. 36% were willing to keep Henne and have Luck sit on the bench for a year but only 23% were willing to trade down (I was one of them).

If someone offer a crazy deal and we still pick in the top ten , I would listen other than that, No.

Unless it it there 1, 2 and 3rd then maybe yes. We could build a O-Line with there pick and ours . We could find a F.S. and a T.E. I’m not against the picks but it better be worth it.

While a guy like Landry Jones is a good prospect, the dropoff from Luck to Jones is great enough that I wouldnt trade the pick even if we picked up another 1st rounder…

Long Story Short.

There have only been two guys that have generated this level of buzz in the last 40 years (Elway and P. Manning) and both were drafted by the Colts. The Colts are tanking the season to get Luck and there isn’t a thing anybody can do to stop them. Face it, fate is a cruel B!tch that hates our guts.
But on the possibility that we get the #1 pick outright, we will have to draft Luck. I don’t see any team offering the kind of King’s ransom it would take for us to trade back. Elway and Manning both carried their teams for over a decade and won at least 1 Super Bowl while playing in at least 2. Knowing our luck we draft Luck and he fails to materialize but if he is there we take him.

I have supported Henne and believe he can be a very effective QB with the right pieces around him and in the right system

However, holding the #1 pick the Dolphins have to draft Luck. Ross seems ready to have a franchise QB to build around. Luck is the guy.

The rest of the problems for the Dolphins….DT, #1 WR, big time TE, OT, G, rush LB, a DE that can pass rush, S, SS all will have to be solved in FA and the remaining draft picks.

by 1977 Blazer fan on Oct 19, 2011 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

If we have the #1 pick

and don’t draft Andrew Luck, it is only because the GM is a closet JETS FAN.
#1` Luck is graduating. He is guaranteed #1 pick. All teams with the #1 SUCK.

  1. The odds of Luck staying in college is probably better than the odds of Toneeee becoming coach of the year!!
  2. Andrew Luck is the best college football player coming out in the last 10+ years.
  3. Please review post about elite QB’s ! Although not guaranteed, 5/9 of the QB’s considered Eite were drafted #1 – #4 overall.
