Entire letter from owner Stephen Ross to Dolphins fans
To Our Loyal Season Ticket Members and Dolphins Fans,
The first of the three commitments that I made to all of our fans when I purchased the Miami Dolphins was that I would do everything possible to bring a Super Bowl championship back to South Florida. That, above all else, is what I want for this franchise, for this community and what you, as a season ticket member and Dolphins fan, deserve.
So there is no confusion about our recent actions, and because you are entitled to our trust and confidence, I want you to hear directly from me about the evaluation process of the past week.
Going into the 2010 season, my expectation was that we had a team and an organization that was capable of reaching the Super Bowl. We fell short of that goal and, furthermore, the season was disappointing for a few reasons. We were very aggressive during the offseason and added players and coaches that we believed were the missing pieces to put us over the top. While many of those new faces were outstanding contributors this season, we still fell short in other areas. Additionally, our performance at home was bitterly disappointing. The reasons as to why we played so much better on the road than at home are hard to figure. As a fan myself, I know how frustrating this season was on all of you.
The results were unacceptable. We hold ourselves to higher standards and have loftier goals for this franchise. We fell short of our mission of returning to the postseason and did not measure up to the high standards we set for ourselves. As a result, I felt it was incumbent upon me to explore options to improve this team.
I met with Tony Sparano on Monday to discuss the season and understand his plan of what needed to change as we headed into the offseason. I told him that I needed time to digest what I had heard and that I would get back to him with my thoughts later in the week. Meanwhile, I received word that Jim Harbaugh made it clear that his intention was to pursue a career in the NFL. As news reports began to surface on Tuesday that Jim was interviewing with other teams, I made the decision to reach out to Jim to see whether or not he would be a beneficial fit for the organization.
General Manager Jeff Ireland and I met with Jim on Thursday. At the end of the meeting, I thanked Jim for his time, wished him well and soon let him know that we would not pursue the discussion any further. To be clear, I made no offer to Jim Harbaugh. Reports to the contrary and the associated outrageous financial terms that were rumored with those reports were completely inaccurate. We never spoke to any other coaching candidates, including Bill Cowher, Jon Gruden or any other names that have been rumored to be a candidate.
Tony Sparano is the best person to lead this team. Tony's contract has been extended through the 2013 season, and I wholeheartedly believe that the combination of Jeff and Tony represents one of the strongest organizations in all of football. I remain committed to supporting them in any way possible and will always provide the financial resources to make us a winner.
I am obsessed with winning and will do whatever it takes to make us a perennial Super Bowl contender. Many of the model franchises over the course of NFL history have been built on a commitment from ownership to chart a course for the organization, select the right people to execute that strategy and allow them the time to finish what they started. Stability and consistency are two of the most important virtues of ownership.
I realize your faith in us has been put to the test this week, but I assure you we are well positioned to return to the winning ways that have defined this franchise.
Let me end by thanking you for hanging in there and supporting us throughout the year despite our struggles at home. For that, we are sincerely grateful. You have my personal and unwavering commitment that we will do our part to create a true home field advantage with your help in the future. Rest assured, there are better days ahead for the Miami Dolphins.
With sincere thanks and appreciation,
Steve Ross

Unfortunately for Ross...
There isn’t much he can do through words that will make displeased fans happy or relieved right now. Two big reasons:
1. We want to know exactly what changes will be made to the roster and staff. We obviously won’t know any of this until said changes are officially made.
2. As far as stability goes, we all know it’s a season to season, if not game to game business. If next season is another disaster and upgrades are available, we all know he could possibly make changes. As much as he wants to give the current staff and front office time, it may not be another 3 years worth, regardless of extensions.
Unfortunately, all we can do now is sit back and hope the pieces can get built back together again. I don’t mind if it’s slowly, as long as it’s surely.
While that is true,
I don’t think we need to worry about that. One thing I am happy about Mr. Ross is that he isn’t cheap. He’s willing to spend big money to help this franchise out. However, this ties in with what I said to start off. We need to sit and wait to see who he spends it on, lol. Regardless, I just hope it all pays off, no pun intended.
Thats the key
I agree that I think that Ross will spend as much money as just about any NFL owner trying to make the team better. The important thing is how well the money is spent. Also being a Chicago Cubs fan, I know all too well that you can be one of the biggest spending teams in the league and still have bunk to show for it. With the teams being so close financially, brains go further than bucks in today’s NFL. We need to get the right people in the positions that scout and sign the right players. I’m not so certain that we have that right now.
If he spend the big bucks he has the right to expect Ws, IMO.

It's still a nice gesture for Ross to do that and give an explanation to the fans.
We have an owner that cares, and wants to win. That’s what’s important. Let’s just move foreward, Draft a QB in the first, and start winning again

I agree
He messed up and he knows it. Ross is trying to make amends and this is a step in the right direction. It isn’t going to do anyone any good to hold grudges so lets just move on.
Let he/she who has never made a mistake cast the first stone.

I don't have a huge problem with what happened.
If he had sacked Sparano and then gone after Harbaugh – and failed – then we’d be in the shit now.
When this stuff happens to players we shrug. Tony put himself in a position where he became ‘upgradeable’ or ‘replaceable’ through his own poor performance. So they looked into it. I’m happy they did. If they had kept it from the media it would be no issue at all – that was the only mistake they made.
Anyway, when it became clear that we couldn’t do better than Sparano the only way to maintain stability is to give him an extension – for his peace of mind and satisfaction (everyone loves a raise/extension – that’s guaranteed money if he gets sacked) and to make the players know they can’t play out the string waiting for a new boss – Sparano is in charge. Make no mistake – despite the extension if we go 7-9 again he IS getting sacked. The extension is for stability’s sake.
Ross is right – the results this year were unacceptable. And also Sparano saying they know they need to become ‘explosive’ bodes well – if Sparano can develop as a coach he could be a good one.
With a good draft and a decent OC we’ll be a much better team next year. The talent is there to win 10 games. Tony can get us there. With the right breaks we can do even better (like 2008).
Ross screwed up a bit, but only a bit. The letter is a good way of making it right. As long as he makes better decisions from now on, learns from this and most importantly delivers a winning season next year I won’t remember this at all.

Interesting that he claims that he didn't approach cohwer and that the numbers being thrown around were off base
but in general this was not a bad move for him to have written this letter. It would have been worse had he remained silent.

i dont blame him a bit for checking out his options.....
and for all those people that think is was “rude” to look for a replacement without first firing tony sparano……..c’mon, who would be stupid enough to fire their coach before they found a replacement……that’s like quiting your job before you have another one lined up……tony should understand that ross is all about the bottom line and his bottom line for the miami dolphins is “wins”………im glad we have and owner that is more concerned about making us a winner than he is about hurting a grown mans feelings………as far as im concerned tony and his staff have been put on notice……sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet……..thats what the coaching staff has to do and what we have to do as fans……..next season will be better…….or else

I think Ross went out only to hire an OC and Harbaugh was the only candidate
that he felt would be the only person to accept the position being he’s coming from the collegiate ranks, such offer to Gruden would of been an insult.

Yeah, he's gonna pay an OC to be the highest paid coach in the league
Get real, he was trying to replace Sparano. And paying your coordinator more than your coach is just as much of an insult.

I am not as pissed about this whole thing as most but I have to wonder why he would say he didn't speak to him because of Nolan
first, whose to say he woldn’t have kept nolan? Second, it was at least worth a conversation as we may still have been better off even if he wanted someone new for DC.

Its a letter to the shareholders....
Its a letter of lies, sprinkled with a little bit of truth (he admits what we already know), denies stuff that he knows will cause a backlash….
But all in all its supposed to be a feel good letter and instill trust back in the organization. He tells us what we want to hear (he’ll spend the money, and wants to win)….
It really doesn’t change any of the BS that they’ve done.
I’ve seen these from corporations for the better part of my life…. ::sigh::

What else could we expect at this point?
At least Ross now recognizes there’s damage and it needs to be controlled. He seemed oblivious to that all week.
You’d have to think Ross learned a little about the way the media works and how perceptions will fill a vacuum if you don’t provide something yourself.

So some fans are really mad because of this?
why?
1 He thought Harbaugh would of been an improvement. So he checked it out.
2. Sparano has had two 7-9 seasons. But is a decent coach.
So what do you do in his shoes? Yes he mishandle it. But if you’re in his shoes you take a good look at Harbaugh. Time was short. But hopefully he learned his lesson.
Sparano got millions for this. Do you make millions?
Ross clearly will spend the money. Be thankful we don’t have someone cheap and wont make decisions on the player level.
We know where there loads of misinformation. We know that. So where do you draw the line on what to believe and what to not?
The quicker we move from this the better. We now know Sparano will be the head coach and Ireland will be the GM. It’s time for them to get back to work. There is lots to do.

How do you know this?
The players could rally around him that much more, if you watch the whole press roundtable you will see just how much this was blown out of proportion. Ross was very naive but the key is he is a huge Miami Dolphins fan and wants to win, I like having an owner of the team that is a life long fan of the team.
On the "get Jake Locker in the draft no matter what it takes" bandwagon
It said in the AP article...
that sparano received 39 text messages from players offering congratulations. Out of 53 players that is still al lot of confidence. The only thing that makes me hopeful (I will not say excited) is that in the press conference Ross said, "The emphasis is going to be on offense—an exciting offense, a more aggressive offense, creative. I will deliver a winner. That is my commitment."
But before that happens, let’s see who the new OC is going to be. I think that will sway me one way or the other. Until them we’ll wait in limbo.

Well we will have to wait and see but as I have written from the start of this whole thing
Sparano AND Ross/Ireland have the whole offseason to get people fired up to play for him. It isn’t as if they are now screwed and there is nothing they can do to move forward and build confidence (assuming as much of it was lost as you think).
Now if Sparano were a bad leader I would agree, but if he can’t get this group motivated to play it won’t be because of this. This would have been the straw.
"The first thing I do when I get out of bed and feel the jolt in my knees is think of Roy Winston. On the second step, my calcified Adam's apple starts bobbing, and I think of Carl Eller. Scuttlebutt is what it is and you need to take “rumours” with a grain of salt. Until it is made official it can and most likely will change. Things are always subject to change at a monets notice. I will admit I got wrapped up in this and did not think clearly, the media circus only fueled my sense for the need of information.
I had said in other posts (where we thought TS was gone “for sure”) that I believe TS is a good coach and will only continue to improve. Does he have flaws? Who in life doesn’t? I think the players are really going to rally around him next year. I look forward to who they bring in as the new OC (thank God!).

this team hasnt shown me anything to say we’re goin to improve..if Ross really wanted to IMPROVE he wouldve started by firing Sparano..we’re back to playing conservative as shit and playing for FGs..yea, the team will rally around him and play hard, until they start to lose, it takes more than just playing “hard” to win in the NFL, u gotta have talent, which this team lack, A LOT OF IT!!..i cant wait til we lose that first game 24-9, but atleast we’ll have some fist pumps to look at
Of course they haven't shown anything
the 2010 season is still ongoing so the offseason for the 2011 season is a few months away.
u gotta have talent, which this team lack, A LOT OF IT!!
Sparano wasn’t the problem this year then; if what you say is true then a 7-9 season is pretty good for a team with no talent, the HC must have gotten the most out of them. Let’s sign that HC to an extention…… oh wait we did.
Both Ross and Ireland said in the press conference that they are looking at a more explosive offense. I am looking forward to the offseason and seeing some moves but the biggest one is the OC.
On the "get Jake Locker in the draft no matter what it takes" bandwagon
makes you wonder who they're looking for in the draft
should be an interesting and exciting off-season
www.myspace.com/mulldozer
There are several ways they can go
I am torn on what they should do, we desperately need a franchise QB. I am really intrigued by the Gabbert kid. He looked pretty good in the bowl game. I also like Locker but I am a little concerned with his Pass %. His WR did drop a ton of passes (easy ones too) and the talent around him was suspect at best. I do like the fact that while playing hurt he had a couple of 4th quarter come backs to make Washigton bowl eligible. That shows his mental and physical toughness. He also lead his team to a bowl win over a much better Nebraska team. People compare him to Clausen but I think he is more like Rodgers.
On the "get Jake Locker in the draft no matter what it takes" bandwagon
Glad its over.
Personally, Harbaugh’s 29-21 record at Stanford didn’t make him jump out as better than what we have. Compared to Sparano’s 25-23 record in arguably the toughest division at the pro level and what can we conclude? Still think he was a better option than what we have?
Take away the stellar 2010 season with Andrew Luck (the most pro ready qb in college) and he is only17-20.
Does he still sound like someone we should have even approached as an upgrade?

What will be a success next year?
Playoffs? One and done playoffs?
What will Tony have to do to have the heat off of his back?
At least we do not have Rex Ryan! I would rather lose with some dignity
than win with a class less bafoon at the helm! In the end I want to win with Tony as coach. I do not want to lose but there are some things worse than losing.
Ryan =Fool
Belecheck = cheater
However that being said there is not a person in the world that would keep me from liking the Dolphins. I did not like Jimmy Johnson but stuck with the Dolphins during his time on the team!
I believe that with a few acquisitions, a decent draft and Henning gone we will be able to get in as a wildcard next year!
However I believed in 2010 too and was wrong.
New OC QB and RB! Plus some new O linemen!!!
It's all Lies! Lies I tell ya!

I'M GOING TO WRITE A LETTER, TOO.
Right to Tony. I have their address at the headquarters. I’m sure it will find it’s way to his office. I have a lot to say. It’s not going to be “professionally written”, you know, like an attorney would write or even a book writer would right. It will come from my heart but yet it will be proper.
LOL Ok but post it here and then repost it with the response if you do in fact recieve on.

LETTER - THAT'S NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!
Look at this video! OMG. Just pay attention to when Sparano comes in and is about to sit down. Look at what he does. Notice the body language. Pay attention to Sparano’s body language and try to notice Ross’ look at the same time. Oh, it’s priceless.

He wasn't going anywhere
Everyone knows that even if we bring in a veteran or draft a QB that Henne will be given equal opportunity to win the job in training camp. His only real chance though is to spend a lot of time with BM and try and get that relationship fixed.

Ireland and Sparano have been friends since the Dallas days
On the "get Jake Locker in the draft no matter what it takes" bandwagon
Hey Steve....BITE ME!!!
Dear Mr. Ross,
You, my friend, are an IDIOT!! While you sit back in your corinthian leather chair aboard your private jet, flying across the country to tell Jim Harbough that he should stay at Stanford, other teams were out pursuing coaches and players that could and would want to be part of their team. Perhaps, you should have been FIRING that MORON, Dan Henning. Instead us fans are left to wonder, what the hell is this guy doing. You are out pursuing another coach, while you still had a head coach? That tells me a lot about you and it tells me more about Jim “NOW, I’ll never get any respect from ANY NFL coach” Harbough.
So now, Steve, you send out this letter and it certainly sounds an awful lot like the letter all of the auto workers received 2 years ago from GM. Yeah sure, we’ll be back in the mix someday, but, in the meantime, we’re going to cut back your pay, keep the guy that is the top dog when it comes to overall performance of EVERY ASPECT of the team, and oh, by the way, your benefits are going to be scaled back, just a bit. Utter bullshit Steve!! The only part of that letter that made any sense at all is when you stated, and I quote…“Select the right people to execute.” Granted, you followed that up with some B/S about strategy…But, you had it right from the beginning, SELECT THE RIGHT PEOPLE TO EXECUTE!! That firing squad should have started with Henning, followed up quickly by Sparano {the apologist for all of these wannabe coaches and coordinators} and finish the process up by telling Mr. Ireland that he can follow in the Tuna’s footsteps and just pack up and leave. And oh by the way, Henne should not just be shown the door, but, he should be thrown through it, head first!! This chump is a loser that proved time and time again that he cannot and will not be dependable to keep the lead in a game without throwing it away, or, giving your team a chance to move the ball down field for a game winning score. A backup that will suffice for a game or two, in a pinch only, mind you.
So, in closing Steve, this fan is not fooled by your bullshit letter of discontent. Not only did you not make the right moves, you failed to make any move what so ever that could improve your cuurent situation. Which is in complete disarray, by the way. Good luck attracting any worthwhile coordinators, coaches, players, and FANS. You’re going to need it! Joe Robbie must be rolling over in his grave right now after seeing what has become of his once great franchise that he, and he only, truly cared about.
Paul F. Johns
Umm
other teams were out pursuing coaches and players that could and would want to be part of their team.
Umm A lot of teams are STILL PLAYING, others don’t even have a HC. Others still want some coaches that are on teams that are still playing. So nothing really lost there.
Steve, you send out this letter and it certainly sounds an awful lot like the letter all of the auto workers received 2 years ago from GM
Are you really trying to compare a letter to a football teams fans to that of hundreds of people how lost their livelihood?
That firing squad should have started with Henning
Henning is gone.
Henne should not just be shown the door, but, he should be thrown through it, head first!!
I disagree. We are on the hook for only 550k for his services next year. Not bad for a backup QB.
Not only did you not make the right moves, you failed to make any move what so ever that could improve your cuurent situation
False
Henning is gone AND there is going to be sweeping changes on the offensive side of the coaching staff. Sparano said He and Ross wants to “open this thing up”. Which is what our problem was on offense. We were waaaay to conservative. So Maybe keeping Sparano was the right move and he recognizes the problem on this team which is the offense.
So how bout actually let the season finish and actually see what kind of moves he makes before you accuse of not making the right moves?

I agree to a point
He thinks we are a bunch of line workers for Firestone. Living Paycheck to paycheck and we do not know the ins and outs of what it takes to be winners. Well your last statement is the most accurate one. Joe Robbie IS rolling over in his grave. He is the ONE person that truely cared what happened to his franchise. I would also roll Don Shula in there too. This team is destined to become the Detroit Lions. A once proud organization. Winning championships. Playing for titles each year. Then the ownership got flakey! Detroit became a heel of an org. and it started from the top. Buffalo will finish better then us next year. He has sent a message to all probable coord. in the league that there is no job security in MIAMI. He couldn’t have said it any louder that He (Mr. Ross) doesn’t know how to run an org. Tony is now left holding our future. If he does get this team to a playoff next year, he is coach of the year. If he doesn’t, then Mr. Ross can start looking for another coach the same way he did last week. Tony is once again the scape goat! Tony should have been given a Five year deal. Period. Show some job security to the man. Show some down right out belief in the man. Then you will get a top grade Off. Coord. and other assistance. Free agents will see that there is a dedicated owner to coach relationship. Do you think Mr. Kraft did it this way? As much as I hate that team they have the new generation of Dynasty tagged all over that team. Pittsburgh? Look at what that org. has been through? There is one word Mr. Ross does not know in all of his Wealth!! COMMITMENT! Commitment to your staff, players, fans, and community. He thinks if he waves a couple of benjamins around people will listen and do whatever the f… he wants them to. It takes more than just saying you will bring a winner to MIAMI!! You have to commit yourself to the people with there hands on the product. Now, how is TS supposed to feel now that he knows his head is on the block game in and game out for the next two seasons? He basically just told his wife I will keep you for two more years but you are going to sign a prenup! If I don’t like you anymore after two years you get nothing and are out of here bitch!! Commitment. Mr. Ross!! I do not buy ur lies either. I hate to see what happens now!! We are doomed to fail. I do not know how anyone can fix this complete and total implosion!! Good luck! Tony… YOU ARE GOING TO NEED A LOT OF IT!!
Glad
That the fans see through all this BS. Ireland is a bonafide jerkoff. He treats people like crap, poorly evaluates talent. I have no idea why they are retaining him? Just look at how they treat their own players. Ronnie needed how many yards to get his bonus? What did he ask Bryant? How did they treat JT? You reap what you sow. They ALL needed to be fired. They are ripping the soul “fans” out of this team now that they are done destroying the organization.

The Phins will be ok if.....
….Sparano hires an imaginative OC who can develop a offensive plan tailored to the qb and wr,s and beef up the offensive line for running north-south.
Simple to say tougher to do.
Sparano has worked under the thumb of Parcells and Ireland. Will he now have more say in coaching hires and player recruitment/draft? Running the team by committee won’t work. I think failure of this team in the last half of the season is partly because Parcells left, creating a leadership vacuum.
This will be an interesting off-season.
"What the hell's goin' on out there!" Vince Lombardi
CYA LETTER FAILS
Attempting to make a bad situation disappear Ross has put out a letter that only insults the Miami Fans intelligence. This was the worst attempt at damage control since Pres. Clinton said “I didn’t have sex with that Woman”. What his letter should have said was I have made a colossal mess of the situation, team and the Coaches ability to lead by my actions. I’m now going to turn the running of the team over to people that know football and hope they can restore what I have destroyed. From now on I will sit in my sky box watching the game and entertaining. I only hope by doing this the fans and team will forgive me for being an IDIOT!
Spokesman for the lets give Henne what we never gave Marino A RUNNING GAME DRAFT INGRAM
Sparano negotiated for more control over "personnel"
Sparano hand-picked John Jerry last year in the 3rd round after seeing him up close at the Senior Bowl which he coached. For the record, the guy has been a disappointment and frequently misses assignments or simply gets overpowered.
Time to move on
It is time for everyone from ross to the fans to move on. This past week was just a big cluster f@&k and in the end TS was still the Dolphins HC. Now the agenda calls for new OC and getting 53 football players to stand behind a man that many thought was as good as gone, which is easier said than done. I am not sure who the Dolphins will actually pursue in the draft, but I believe that they should do whatever they can to get a second round pick.
If he can caoch they will stand behind him
definitely easier said than done, but probably not insurmountable with an offseason and a couple of smart decisions.
Of course Sparano still needs to bring it which remains to be seen. I am going to be excited because that’s me.

You know what
all you people can stay negative all you want but im not. for an owner to call a press conference to explain what happen and what he plans to do shows me that he cares for this franchise and a little bit about us fans. they got rid of the real problem Dan Henning, and just like last are addressing the problem head on. i find it funny how you people Ross and idiot. the guy has more money then you all are worth and has been successful in business. what right or credentials do you morons have to call that guy a idiot??
Everything will be all better when we sign/trade for vince young and Asomugha this offseason…and draft Ingram
