I believe that this is great news for the Phins. Tony Sparano deserves the opportunity to turn this thing around and I believe that both he and Ireland will do that this year. Remember the 09' season, when we were so unhappy with our defense. Well look what happened. We hired a new DC named Mike Nolan and went out in free agency and the draft and became a top ten defense.
Now it is time to address the offensive side of the ball. Particularly the Need for Speed, the OL and a new OC.
We have to remember where this team was in 07' when we were 1-15. In retrospect ,the 08' season was an aberation. There were three important factors that contributed to us going 11-5 which turned out to be tied for the greatest turnaround in NFL history with the 97' or 98' Colts. First of all, the change in leadership at the top of the organization allowed the team to add talent through the draft. free agency and of course better coaching. But the most unlikeliest of scenarios occurred that year. Just two to three weeks before the start of the season, we picked up Chad Pennington after the Jets released him. Remember before that we were going into the season with John Beck and Chad Henne. Then the first game of the season, Brady got hurt and later in the season, Favre got hurt. In addition, we played the two weakest divisions in the NFL (The NFC West and the AFC West) in combo with a last place schedule. In other words, while all of us really enjoyed that season. The reality was that because of these circumstances we were not nearly as good as we thought. Prior to that season, I do not recall anybody thinking that we would have won more than 5 or 6 games that year and certainly not going 11-5 and making the playoffs. This scenario created an unexpected consequence.
As a result, we thought we were closer to the elite teams in the NFL. First of all, this hurt us in the 09' draft because we should have been drafting in the teens perhaps the single digits but instead our first selection was in the late twenties. Obviously this would have given us better players in that year's draft. That is why so many of us have been frustrated.
Now it is time for us to put on our chinstraps and support our team and Coach Sparano and his staff. Hopefully, we can find an excellent OC and make the necessary changes we all want for this team to be successful.
