The Aaron Maybin Experiment

Let's take a bit of a break from the weird couple of days we have all had turn to some interesting news out of Buffalo.  It seems that LB Aaron Maybin's future is very questionable with the Bills.  Maybin, a Penn State LBer, was selected 11th overall by the Bills in the 2009 draft.  As DolFans we should be familiar with him, but surprisingly we really don't see or hear much from him because he has been a massive disappointment.  Heralded for his great pass rushing skills in college, Maybin accumulated 61 tackles, 16 sacks, and 24.5 TFL as a Nittany Lion.  In the past two seasons in the NFL he has accumulated 24 tackles and no sacks.  So the Bills cutting him is pretty understandable especially as they try to improve.  I believe however Maybin may have some use to the Dolphins and is worth a look.

Now when talking pass rushers on the Dolphins go no further than Cameron Wake, really go no further because we don't have anyone else.  Though our D-Line has been able to generate a bit of pressure sometimes, it is not very consistent (hopefully that should improve with the return of Odrick).  With our 3-4 system we expect a pass rush to be generated from our other starting OLB Koa Misi.  Initially, he looked pretty good at the beginning of the season, temporarily leading all rookies in sacks.  Lately however he is unable to get any pressure from his side leaving O-Lines free to take care of Cameron Wake.  Watching a recent interview, Misi was asked about his lack of a pass rush towards the end of the season, he said something along the lines that teams have figured out his bull rush technique.  Well a bull rush really isn't that hard to figure out and when O-Linemen have about 8 inches and 60-70 pounds on you it is pretty easy to stop.

This seems to be a problem that the FO and coaches are pretty familiar with, especially since we put in for Shawne Merriman when he was released.  I think Aaron Maybin would be a great pickup for depth and as a pass rush specialist opposite Wake on obvious passing downs.  Imagine a front of Soliai-Starks-Odrick with Wake-Maybin on the bookends on passing downs.  What does everyone think?
