CHAD GREENWAY, LB

I was browsing through Draft Countdown and came across the Vikings at 12 and it was stated that, "if Chad Greenway or Ben Leber leave as free agents this offseason", Vikes could be in the market for someone like Akeem Ayers of UCLA.  I've always liked Greenway.  He's always been consistent.  He's 6-2 and around 240.  He's very instinctive and has become one of the best OLB in the league.  He's a gifted and well-rounded individual and he's excellent at stopping the run at the line.  I'm sure the Vikings will give it their all to keep him but we have the money (Ross), right?

Hopefully, the free agency will work itself out with the CBA because if so, we don't need to draft a LB.  There are so many available - depending upon who you personally like is one thing but just some of my favorites Kamerion Wimbley (OAK), Manny Lawson (SF) Justin Durant (JAC), LaMarr Woodley (Pitt), Tamba Hali (KC) and Paul Posluszny of Buffalo.  With one of them, we could move Misi to the inside.  Crowder would have to go.

What do you think about the possibilty of landing Greenway?

I thought Aj Edds? he can still prove himself

and Misi will do fine on the outside.

I would like to see AJ Edds play before we worry about getting another LB

I don’t think we need to waste any potential Free Agent money on a LB. We need to use that money to get Mankins. Our D was pretty solid last season and should get better just by having Odrick/Edds play and the young guys being a year older and having another year of playing together under their belts. We have to have one of the youngest D’s in the league. Don’t waste picks or Cap money on solidifying the D. It’s pretty solid already. Let’s fix the offense so that we can compete w/the best in the NFL.

If you stop improving and changing pieces

you will deteriorate. All the great defenses make tweaks every year — nobody stands pat in this league.

We should add a speedier OLB to give us a lethal duo on the edges. That would strike fear into any QB.

At the expense of what?

You would rather get another OLB than a RB? QB? WR? TE? OL? You are talking all crazy my friend. The D is fine. Adding some depth is fine but we really need to concentrate on offense. You must have noticed that while watching games this past season. Would you spend the #15 pick on an OLB. That would be like picking Tedd Ginn or Pat White were we did. I will say we can use a 6th or 7th rounder on somebody but that would be it. OFFENSE is what is needed for this team to win. Not another OLB.

Picking an OLB in the first 4 rounds would be crazy

but to not upgrade it, if given the chance, would be equally as crazy. There isn’t a single position on this team (except LT) that coulnd’t use an upgrade. Do we have a lot of very good pieces and positions that don’t “need” to be upgraded? Sure, if given the opportunity the FO should (and I am sure they will) always look to improve.

I will say, if given the choice between someone like Mankins and a very good/great OLB the choice is obvious.

Did I say any of that?

Quit making massive assumptions. I never said I’d rather have a speedier OLB instead of upgrades at any of those positions you listed. You want to see what happens if we stand pat on defense? We’ll fall into the 15th rated defense area, guaranteed. Make some tweaks that improve the defense, not wholesale changes. Quit being so dramatic.

I would be happy to see Greenway as a Dolphin

Someone like Lamarr Woodley would be amazing though! Either way, I don’t think the Dolphins should spend anything above a fifth rounder on a linebacker (or any defender for that matter).

by vincemoss86 on Jan 30, 2011 4:33 PM EST reply actions

Oh, I agree with that - no defense before the 5th

As a matter of fact, with all that I’ve been reading, I’m assuming that we are going to go all offense this year – maybe one or two defensive players (we have two 7th rounders).

by Cutie on Jan 30, 2011 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

agree with most. Greenway is an ABSOLUTE stud, a high motor guy who can rack up tackles

but i think we may have more holes than LB… i doubt we address this position unless Crowder gets shipped somewhere

Plus...

in the 3-4 he is an inside linebacker. That would be a lot ot money to tie to one position.

He is a 4-3 OLB, not suited to the SOLB in a 3-4,

so I’m not sure he would even fit here, he would have to move inside, so it’s hard to tell.

In a pleasant dream we could land Woodley, but I seriously doubt the Steelers let him go, but they are the Steelers so you never know, Wake and Woodley would be sick, move Misi inside(his true NFL position imo) next to Dansby and that is a scary LB corps.

aka Joey Porter??

The Steelers and other top defenses/teams let guys go when they know it’s time. (Bart Scott to the Jets from the Ravens is another example). They understand that to stand pat and overpay costs you dearly in the end.

I don’t want to overpay for anybody this year. We did that last year (Dansby and Marshall) - I’d rather we find some value this year.

Woodley is only 26, he is just finishing his rookie contract, Woodley is at the beginning of his career not the end, lol

I didn't mean it as a straight comparison

just that the Steelers will let guys go if the asking price is greater than the value received. If they don’t re-sign a guy, it’s usually because they recognize they can’t overpay for that particular player because they have pieces ready to step in. I’d take Woodley in a second but the problem is I don’t want to overpay for an upgrade to OLB.

Like finster said......

Woodley is actually 2 (almost 3) years younger than Wake. :)

Totally agree

Although not the biggest need we do require another top pass rusher. Misi is very good but he isn’t an outstanding pass rusher. It is one of the few glaring holes in our D (another pass rushing force on the outside).

I will say

Wake plays against the RT a lot, not sure if Woodley would be as effective against the LT. I guess that would be for Nolan to figure out. :)

I'm sure Nolan would love to have that problem, haha

however if Woodley is actually available that is a serious consideration, he is bar none the best 3-4 SOLB in the league, he “sets the edge” at the highest level while also providing a legit passrush, 3 straight 10+ sack seasons.

Woodley playing over Langford would shut down that side of the field as far as running is concerned and would also benefit Langford as a passrusher, not to mention Wake, scary proposition.

I like it :)

That one addition would also help out our DB and would propel us to a top 3 defense, as far as I am concerned (baring injuries of course).

I guess we can dream, lol. I looked it up, Woodley is a UFA. If we put a claim for Merriman I think that shows the FO is still looking to add some LB’s, more specifically pass rushing OLB. How about Tamba Hali? He is a UFA as well. :)

Tamba Hall isn't the SOLB we need,

we have Wake for the WOLB, we need a guy to lock down that other side imo.

That goes without saying.....

but to say we don’t need to upgrade the LB position is rediculous. We need another good pass rusher opposite Wake so he won’t get double and triple teamed all the time.

Forget about compensation.

Who would YOU (LeftCoast) rather have – Greenway or Crowder. Let’s not discuss trades or anything else. Just who would you rather have?

I would rather have Ray Lewis but that ain't gonna happen.

I think the FO is pretty happy w/our DL and LB corp. We really need to work on the offense at all cost. If our D is in the top 10 that is very acceptable. Plus, who knows, they might catch a few of those picks next year. That would make a huge difference in our WIN total.

they wouldn’t have put in a claim for Merriman.
