All the talk of who’s signed or resigned, drafted, and or hired is truly mental masturbation at this juncture. I’m sure that last statement will inspire several but the truth is, not we the fans, nor the players, nor the management really know how to go about next season. Is there a plan? There better be! Good, bad, or ugly something’s going to come about.
Consider this. Our team (and every other) could be going into the draft with no idea of a player’s actual free agent status. Hopefully, any new draft signing limitations will aid & abet the CBA deal. But what throws a spanner in the works is the money grab agents will now go for as they may more easily parlay a team’s need vs. a player’s worth. If the draft comes before FA, every team must weigh need vs. best overall pick.
To me, this is Goodell’s dream. A lawyer’s perfect legal storm. Think about it. Free agency will be more akin to a college draft like never before. So, in effect, a double matrix may be in play.
As well, we have a gluttony of coaching openings across the league. More than ever owners and gm’s need to get personnel in place to begin the “double matrix.” Not to mention, the Rooney rule may prove to be a weapon against any team to be perceived as hiring unfairly, ala too quickly, a head coach (again playing into the Goodell dream).
All this is to say, if a new coach/gm, etc, gets hired, will it be in time to create the draft/fa matrix needed to put a winning team on the field next year?
So do we really know who to grab in the draft?
I got no idea...
